Ted Kennedy, 1932-2009

posted at 7:32 am on August 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Ted Kennedy lost his battle with brain cancer last night and died at the age of 77.  Kennedy, whose life was marked with tragedies and losses as well as self-inflicted scandals but also with legislative victories and power, had been ill for the last year, and had missed most of the 2009 session of Congress as a result:

Edward M. Kennedy, one of the most powerful and influential senators in American history and one of three brothers whose political triumphs and personal tragedies captivated the nation for decades, died late Tuesday at his home in Hyannis Port, Mass., at age 77. He had been battling brain cancer.

His family announced his death in a brief statement released early Wednesday. “We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever,” the statement said. “We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all.” …

Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, was the last male survivor of a privileged and charismatic family that in the 1960s dominated American politics and attracted worldwide attention. His sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics, died two weeks ago, also in Hyannis Port. One sibling, former U.S. ambassador to Ireland Jean Kennedy Smith, is still alive.

As heir through tragedy to his accomplished older brothers — President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.), both of whom were assassinated — Edward Kennedy became the patriarch of his clan and a towering figure in the U.S. Senate to a degree neither of his siblings had been.

That last is a little unfair to John and Robert, who were both assassinated before their parents had died.  Had they survived, John and and then Robert would almost certainly have assumed that role.  Both deaths were American tragedies, but they were deeply personal tragedies for all of the Kennedys, and Ted had that role thrust upon him to a large extent through two assassins’ bullets.

As Michelle says, we will have plenty of time to analyze Kennedy’s life and work, but today is a day to give comfort to Kennedy’s family.  They will be in my prayers.

Update: Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader, issued this statement:

“It is with great sadness that Elaine and I note the passing of Senator Ted Kennedy, one of the giants of American political life, a longtime Senate colleague, and a friend.

“No one could have known the man without admiring the passion and vigor he poured into a truly momentous life. We send our deepest expressions of sympathy to Vicki, his children, and the entire Kennedy family.”

Being born to a family of such means, Senator Kennedy could well have decided there were far simpler and less agonizing ways he could spend his time than to devote his life to public service. That he chose to do so, and to suffer the stings that often come with a career in statecraft, is a tribute to Kennedy’s deep committment to America.
radjah shelduck on August 26, 2009 at 7:40 AM

Bull. Ted had his senate seat held for him by a lackey until he was old enough to serve, then he spent his entire career using the power of his name to twist things to his tune. You may have noticed his effort to change his state’s election laws not once but twice.

Bishop on August 26, 2009 at 8:03 AM

for all his flaws, he improved millions of lives, often while working across the aisle in ways that are increasingly unimaginable. Even those who disagreed with his position can learn from his compassion and comity.

One hopes that he was right, that the dream, indeed, shall never die.

Bleeds Blue on August 26, 2009 at 7:58 AM

Thank God I’m not a diabetic. All your sugar coating of the man is offensive. Yes, he worked across the aisle but he was the one who made “Borking” into a verb by the way he changed the nature of advise and consent for SCOTUS nominees. For all the crap being flung today suggesting that the man was bipartisan, he is the one who turned Judiciary hearings into political witchhunts.

Honor the man if you must but stop your lies about his whole legacy.

Me. I’m sure his family will miss him, and I feel for them today. I suspect that others with whom he was closely associated will miss him too.

Christianity is not a religion solely of good works, though good works are a reflection of one’s faith. Because Kennedy was a Christian, I expect that he’s saved, despite the sins he committed in his life.

For those of us on the outside looking in, we’re left to decide whether he’s worthy of our praise and, more important, whether his life is one after which we’d pattern our own lives.

Afrolib, you’re entitled to praise him and to choose to pattern your life after his. Me, I’ll decline to do so, and I’ll find other models for my life.

Keep it on the Kennedy Estate.

Those who propose things need to host them on their own dime and on their own property.

There are people with oil down under who are WRONGLY prevented from hosting its development on their own dime and on their own property. Our entire nation is held hostage by the parasitic Marxists within our midst, thieving our taxes to pad Soros’ pockets and enable our competitors (Brazil and China) at our own expense.

TimBuk3 on August 26, 2009 at 8:11 AM

Yes, may God have mercy on his soul. Because none of us should.
What are we suppose to feel??
A drunk died. A drunk and a sleazeball who never had a real job in his life. He got elected to an office by having the same name as his brother and once there, set about ruining other people’s lives. He lived off the fortune of his daddy while ripping down America. He drove a young girl off a bridge and left her to drown. He chose not to report the accident. He made the decision to let this girl drown in order to save his political career.
He got caught. You ever wonder if this was the only time he got caught??
Like I posted somewhere yesterday,,, the House and Senate are elite clubs. Only in congress can thieves, liars and traitors be given higher honors that men and women who defend our freedoms on the battlefield. Only in congress can sleazeballs and drunks be called respected experts.

If Kennedy lived in your neighborhood and never had a fortune, never had a government job,, he’d be that crazy drunk from the trailer court who left a little girl to drown.
The only sobering thing about this is this. There is a judgment. And one day we will all stand before it.

What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?

I never met or knew him but I think it would have been worth it. My Condolensces

Bruce on August 26, 2009 at 7:42 AM

I met him and his current wife years ago at a Dem luncheon in NY that the President of my company invited me to. This was during that brief period of about six months or so when he dried out and lost a lot of weight.

We had a short two or three minute conversation with him and he was both warm and friendly toward me. I’m sure he thought I was just another contributor, but it was interesting.

I also remember that when the Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2002, Kennedy made a statement that pretty much summed up his political philosophy:

“At a time when our ENTIRE COUNTRY IS BANDING TOGETHER AND FACING DOWN INDIVIDUALISM, the Patriots set a wonderful example, showing us all what is possible when we work together, believe in each other, and SACRIFICE FOR THE GREATER GOOD.”

He didn’t mean HIS individualism of course. He meant that YOU must give up YOUR individualism and sacrifice for HIS agenda.

Kennedy spent his entire career fighting against the basic principles upon which this country was founded. That’s his legacy.

RIP

As far as Mary Jo is concerned, Ted will face God’s judgment for his part in her death.

csdeven on August 26, 2009 at 8:17 AM

Because a drunk sleaze ball finally is facing judgment for his crimes, innocent Americans may rest just a little easier. Grandma may live a little longer. Maybe there will be a few less abortions. Maybe a few less soldiers will have to die on the battlefield. Maybe liberty and freedom will endure a little longer.

What won’t be discussed:

1. The flagging numbers for state seizure of healthcare.

2. The massive deficit that has been run up in the last 7 months- more than the entire 8 years of GWB.

3. The failure of the administration to put forward a coherent mission for the combat operations in Afghanistan.

4. The projections of unemployment soon going into double digits.

Every news story I’ve heard about Kennedy mentioned Kopechne (and I listen to NPR, that den of liberals media). It’s not being left out. And it’s fair to mention it.

Also, those who invoke Kopechne to attack Kennedy don’t give about her. She was a democratic activist. If she had lived, your regard for her would be the same as high as any other liberal, which is to say not very. So please stop using her death, invoking her name, for political attacks. Trying. To. Be. Charitable.

Um, leave it to a Kennedy to die before the Bush estate tax expires.

What the world will miss now that Teddy has assumed room temperature:
1) A man who killed a woman in a watery crash naming his dog “splash”
2) No more women being raped on Good Friday
3) Getting caught having another student take his exams and then allowed back into Harvard
4) Unwarranted destruction personally of your political appointees
5) Hypocritical class warfare

I could go on but must I?

Rest In Peace America Teddy May comfort be to his loved ones.

Ugh, there goes all the charity.

Branch Rickey on August 26, 2009 at 8:21 AM

I think it’s only fair to distinguish murder from killing. I don’t believe he wanted to drive off the bridge.

anuts on August 26, 2009 at 8:17 AM

Well then let’s distinguish between accidently driving off a bridge and, as a result, committing involuntary manslaughter AND getting free of a submerged car and not doing anything to check on the passenger before eight hours had elapsed and a legal team had been assembled.

highhopes on August 26, 2009 at 8:21 AM

Alcohol and fire don’t mix. Can you imagine the fireball when Ted hit the lake of fire?

Hiya Ciska on August 26, 2009 at 8:22 AM

She was still alive when he left the scene.

He’s a murderer.

bluelightbrigade on August 26, 2009 at 8:19 AM

Yep. Kennedy should have at the very least done time for manslaughter. He never should have been in the senate.

I won’t shed any tears at all for Ted.

Now watch the dems in Massachusetts run 500 miles an hour to give their democrat governor the power to appoint a democrat to replace him rather than have an election.

I’d love to see Mitt Romney run for senate…

I guess this comment thread is an attempt to see how much lower in the gutter Hot Air can go.

When we get our first glimpse of DU, Kos. and Huffpo through the mist, we’ll know we’re getting close to the bottom.

VelvetElvis on August 26, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Only good thing he’s ever done for this country.

hogfat on August 26, 2009 at 8:21 AM

I keep waiting for someone to say “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.”

Where’s witty repartee when you need it? lol

bluelightbrigade on August 26, 2009 at 8:22 AM

He did lose all of his brothers in the service of this country

EricPWJohnson on August 26, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Mary Jo Kopechne, finally rest in peace. Your murderer is now finally paying for his crime.

Jeff from WI on August 26, 2009 at 8:04 AM

rest in hell

bill30097 on August 26, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Kennedy’s actions were indefensible, in his own words. He spoke how he lived with and thought of her death everyday of his life.

Right,,, and he was probably think how he should have covered it up a little differently.
Maybe Mary Jo was just the one we found out about.

There will be shameless attempts at exploiting his death to say we should pass Obamacare to honor him(not sure my wallet agrees) and after that doesn’t work they’ll probably try to claim we need cuz there’s a swine flu outbreak.

anuts on August 26, 2009 at 8:17 AM

Not at all – he wanted to get laid.

But the diver that recovered her the next morning stated that, had Kennedy just used the fucking phone that was 100 yards away from the bridge – he could have been there in time to save her. The diver stated that he removed her body from an area of the car where there was an air bubble.

When you allow someone to die like that – to me – that’s murder. Or, at the very least … manslaughter.

bluelightbrigade on August 26, 2009 at 8:23 AM

Ted Kenndy was a seriously flawed by all the critera we use to judge a man. While in life I prayed for his failure,in death I pray for his soul.

Ask yourselves how the folks at DailyKOS et al would behave when GWB dies
Midas on August 26, 2009 at 8:13 AM

I still recall how they acted when an infinitely nobler and more worthwhile human being — one Ronald Wilson Reagan by name — passed away, thank you.

You only hobble your own attempt at argument by dredging those ugly memories back into the harsh, revealing sunlight.

RIP Mr. Kennedy. You will be greatly missed.

Afrolib on August 26, 2009 at 8:20 AM

Afrolib, you’re entitled to praise him and to choose to pattern your life after his. Me, I’ll decline to do so, and I’ll find other models for my life.

Actually we still need the Hubble telescope pointed straight down before we see DU, Daily Kos, HuffPo and MSNBC

bill30097 on August 26, 2009 at 8:24 AM

I know it’s wrong to celebrate a person’s passing, but damn if ever there was a time when I don’t want to be right, its right now. Good riddance to a man who has killed more people than America’s nuclear energy system.

jollycynic on August 26, 2009 at 8:24 AM

And what about Joe Jr.? So far no story I’ve heard or read this morning has mentioned the only hero in the Kennedy family. Killed during WWII at age 29 after he volunteered for a dangerous bombing mission when he could have gone home. Joe Jr. was the original political hope of the Kennedy clan.

I’m no fan of the Kennedys – I grew up in MA and never lost any love on them. I have sympathy for his children who just lost their father.

Otherwise, I have nothing to say.

KrisinNE on August 26, 2009 at 8:25 AM

What do you call it when a guy leaves a woman to die and then tries to cover it up?

Might not be technically murder – but a very good reason to call him a “manslaughterer”.
