Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on August 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Last spring, Barack Obama decided against holding a public event or even giving a public statement at the White House on the National Day of Prayer. Robert Gibbs explained that Obama preferred to pray privately and stick to written proclamations, rather than hold a public event with Christian and Jewish leaders to mark the occasion as George Bush did for the previous eight years:

“I think the president understands, in his own life and in his family’s life, the role that prayer plays,” Gibbs said. “And I would denote that the administrations prior to the past one did proclamations. That’s the way the president will publicly observe the national prayer day. But, as I said, privately, he’ll pray as he does every day.”

Of course, if the President prefers to make his religious observations in private, that’s his business. As long as he’s consistent, it shouldn’t cause anyone any problem, right? Right?

Er …

President Obama continued his charm offensive on the Islamic world today, posting on the White House blog a video wishing Muslims a happy Ramadan, the month of fasting, prayer and charity observed by Muslims worldwide.

But to be fair …

This isn’t the first time Obama has sent special holiday messages — in April, for example, there was a two-fer video post on the White House blog recognizing Passover and Easter.

And yet …

But this message was part of a larger push, a point made clear in the introduction to the Ramadan video by Rashad Hussein, a deputy associate counsel in the White House who was the first Muslim in Obama’s administration.

“This month is also a time of renewal and this marks the first Ramadan since the President outlined his vision for a new beginning between America and the Muslim world,” Hussein wrote. “The President’s message is part of an on-going dialogue with Muslim communities that began on inauguration day and has continued with his statement on Nowruz, during trips to Ankara and Cairo, and with interviews with media outlets such as Al Arabiya and Dawn TV.”

I’ll leave this one to your judgment.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

“I think the president understands, in his own life and in his family’s life, the role that prayer plays..”

Yes, BO understands that it involves a prayer rug, facing east (Mecca), and bending a few times each day.

Is this so much of an Obamateurism as it is consistency in his inconsistency when it comes to matters of faith? It is very clear that Jeremiah Wright’s racist views are also those of the filthy liar in the White House. I’d just as rather he not add to his lies and hypocrisy by pretending to be a Christian. It’s hard enough remembering that beneath pure evil there is a human being.

I’m being civil in my remarks about Kennedy today but I will not be so kind when, years from now, the filthy liar’s death is announced.

My judgement:

He isn’t doing much to convince people he is Christian.

And he’s doing more to convince people he isn’t Christian.

He obviously isn’t who he claims to be.

Unfortunately, the church of worshipping oneself doesn’t take long to find. I still think he should go to the church with the Messianic Jew as the pastor in the D.C. area. It’s a pretty fun one.

mjk on August 26, 2009 at 8:23 AM

The real surprise in this is that any of us are still surprised that the filthy liar in the whitehouse would continue to lie. He has been demonstrably dishonest since he learned to talk. Both his books were “enhanced” recollections. The man has lied so often that he no longer sees any differance between what actually is (real) and what he says is (not real). Yet, there are still large numbers who will believe his lies because he (or TOTUS) speaks well. And that is cause for concern.

I’ve never had much use for the birth certificate thing, but I must admit that it’s odd for them to keep it under wraps.

Likewise, I’ve never had much use for the ‘Obama as a muslim’ thing either. That being said, to deliberately snub one’s nose at the traditional Christian elements, all the while going so far over the top for the Muslim occasions… it certainly does look strange to a casual observer (me).

There are polls suggesting that a pretty good chunk of the population thinks that the guy is a Muslim. Good politics would suggest that he not try so hard to seem like he is one.

Is it your reading skill that is impaired, or just your comprehension? Ed didn’t accuse Obama of being a Muslim, he just pointed out that he is a hypocrite.

Try reading the piece again — more slowly this time. Perhaps sounding the words out loud would help you.

Give the man a break. When you’re “re-making” a nation and, by extrapolation, a world, that religion thingy really isn’t that important.

TXUS on August 26, 2009 at 8:36 AM

Nothing about this fool surprises me anymore. It could be revealed that he’s a muslim that was born on the moon, and I’ll I would say at this point is, “figures”.

anniekc on August 26, 2009 at 8:37 AM

Appeasement.
I could understand reaching out to the Muslim world, but doing that (along with bowing to the Saudi king) while downplaying Christianity is stupid.

Then there’s the whole Left’s “Bush shouldn’t inject his religion into public policy” thing, but not a peep when Dear Leader brings up religion to pass ObamaNoCare.

i guess this is what you get when you elect a president who, for twenty years, attended a Black Liberation Theology church.

rbj on August 26, 2009 at 8:38 AM

I doubt that Obama seriously believes in any religion except the worship of himself. From time to time during his life he has made an external show of religious practice, calculated in order to ingratiate himself with a particular community or group. I think he’s trying the same thing with the Islamic world, but the results are not likely to be positive. While many Christian denominations embrace a watered down secular quasi-belief, there is no such tradition in Islam; rather, quite the opposite.

I welcome him to attend my humble Baptist church in Linthicum, MD. It’s not to far.

We preach a good christian message:

All men are sinners deserving the wraith of God.
God the Father put his son to death on the cross to appease his wrath for mankind.
Salvation can only come through trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross and in his resurrection which gives us new life.
With salvation comes joy in worshiping the God of creation for all eternity.

I often heard this adage growing up:

If you were on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

With BHO, I’d say the prosecution would have a pretty hard time overcoming reasonable doubt.

I don’t know…I may be naive and I hate to bring up an old topic, but his having stuck with Rev. Wright for so long tells me he’s a true believer in what that guy had to say, so I have trouble believing he’s suddenly converted or hid his true religion for years. What would be the point? It didn’t matter what religion he was way back when no one knew who he was and I really don’t see that it matters now except that if he is a Muslim, then it’s just another lie he’s told about himself. This appears more like his ego trip Cairo speech to me, reaching out to try and bond with Muslims. I think he truly believes that he’s going to solve all tensions we have with Muslim nations by reaching out his hand. He preached this during his campaign. His hand will be bitten, of course, but he’s too naive to realize that.
