New CBO projection: 2.3 million more people unemployed next year than expected
posted at 9:28 pm on August 26, 2009 by Allahpundit
A back-of-the-envelope calculation by former Bush aide Keith Hennessey translates CBO’s revised projected unemployment rate into a “big bad number.” How bad? It’s an average of almost 200,000 more jobs lost every month for the entire year.
Consider it a minor adjustment to those “created or saved” numbers that no one knows how to calculate anyway.
There is no disagreement, however, about the net directional effect of the two. CBO and OMB project a weaker economy in the remainder of 2009 and in 2010 than they projected at the beginning of this year before enactment of the stimulus.
How much weaker?
Based on CBO’s forecast for the average unemployment rate in calendar year 2010, 2.3 million fewer people will be employed on average next year than they projected in January.
For comparison, in July there were about 140 million people employed in the U.S.
Next year’s reality will depend heavily on when the economy turns up and how quickly growth returns. A new projection of fewer people employed next year should not surprise anyone. But 2.3 million is a big bad number.
Exit question: CBO’s projected average unemployment rate next year is 10.2 percent. How many jobs would we be talking about if they used the “real” unemployment rate, which includes discouraged workers and those who are working less than they’d like? According to the chairman of the Atlanta Federal Reserve, that one currently stands at … 16 percent and counting.

Once, or if, obamacare is enacted, there will be plenty of shovel ready jobs to dig the graves of the elderly.

This is also assuming that things aren’t worse than the CBO predicts. There seems to be a lot of talk about another crash coming. RBS who called the crash last year is making another call.
Seems there is a chance things are about to get much worse.

BHO wants high unemployment, so more people will have no health insurance.

Answer: a lot. Rather than this sort of angels-on-the-head-of-a-pin question, let’s get right down to it:
When will the liberal, Knee-Pads Media issue their first honest assessment of the economy since the inauguration of The One?

So is Husseins Policies working for you? They are clearly not working for me!
So is Hussein still blaming Bush?

We need to start following Mises.org’s suggestions on domestic economic reform (and some international reform, but I still want a strong military).

It looks like the biggest change we’re going to get are the dimes dropped into our tin cups.

Why is the market zoomong?
Why no inflation or deflation?
Why no angry unemployed people? Or employed people for that matter.
And Bob Bechtel(sic) on FOX thinks that The One is the greatest economic genius since FDR. I have a book debunking that. But…
The One is just toying with us. I give him two months to put everyone back to work with all those “saved” or “created” jobs.
If not, we should start making the tea parties and town meetings look like monastic meditation gatherings.

Waiting for Axelturfer to calculate how to spin this as a positive.

It’s OK. Those 2.3 million are racists so they don’t deserve to work. See how awesome Obama is?

Imagine how many more people will be without health insurance next year. Sometimes I wonder if Obama wants it that way.

What would Reagan do?

If he cannot get what he wants by routine legislative process, it stands to reason that he would want a drive down to increase demand. People want things they shouldn’t when desperate. We accept things we normally wouldn’t, I think.

I think the right is starting to do what the left did with Bush.
On the one had, Obama is an incompetent boob. On the other he has this master plan of increasing unemployment to get more people to have no insurance in order to get his health care takeover get more support.
Like Bush was a complete moron, excpet he was also a diabolical genius that blew up the levies, started the war in Iraq so his “oil buddies” could make billons and oh yea planned 9/11 too.
You gotta pick on or the other guys….Obama’s a fool who has no clue what he’s doing. Or he’s a genius master politician. But not both.

I vote for him being an idiot and a weakling..being manipulated by people like Pelosi and Reid and put up by Soros and others who is using this tool to accomplish their leftist, socialist, San Francisco, Democratic spending agenda.
Also, seems like there’s a ot of typos in your comment, AngryEd. I recommend that you don’t post angry.

Once all these folks are out of work, they will finally see the magnanimous ways of the Democratic Party. They will truly appreciate all these safety nets and will gladly hand over more tax dollars to ensure these programs in the future.

Illegal move, not mate. As the lovely Lady Thatcher said, “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”
No hard working, independent minded folks? No money. It’s a self-correcting ideology, although the path is quite…uh..”unattractive”
BobMbx on August 27, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Do NOT fall for these figures people. They’re putting out deliberately low ball bad figures so that when they’re proven wrong in any way they can make a big deal about how things aren’t so bad and how great BO Boy is. Trust but verify… I know it’s hard when they control the agencies releasing the numbers.. but skepticism is a very VERY important trait when dealing with this administration and its cronies.
Mad Mad Monica on August 27, 2009 at 11:51 AM
Well, the opposite may be true, it is so bad that they have to “low ball”…either way, you can’t trust what they are telling us.

I reached a point some 3 months ago where the combination of seeing and hearing the Won, makes me sick to my stomach. I mean, I feel nauseated. Not quite so bad on the radio, but still…his voice kills my appetite.
He lies and the media regurgitates whatever they’ve been fed, right in our laps. That pisses me off to the pegs.
The MSM..the vast majority of cockroaches that feed off of the sewage the the WH feeds them, are traitors in every since of the word. They betrayed us by hiding the truth about Obama before he was enshrined and they continue to betray us when they repeat every lie he hands them. They no longer serve the people…they serve their new master and messiah…the Won. No longer journalists but Propagandists, pissing down our backs and telling us it’s raining.
They must be made to suffer for this. How? Money. Their blood is money.
Obama is a liar and Truth
is killing his Marxist agenda.
