Step in the right direction. But the immediate effect will be that the unions and their fellow-travellers will do all they can to make sure it fails. Then, every time someone tries to promote school choice, they will point to the “failure” in L.A. I commend Villaraigosa for attempting to do the right thing. But I question whether he has the nerve to stay the course. If not, it will be worse than doing nothing.

THIS IS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, BUT, IT WILL NEVER WORK UNTIL THE PARENTS GET INVOLVED WITH THEIR CHILDRENS EDUCTAION.

I GREW UP IN CALIFORNIA AND IT WAS BAD BACK THEN, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE IT IS WORSE, WITH ALL THE SPANISH LANGUAGE CLASSES AND DROP OUTS.

I LIVE IN UTAH NOW, UTAH SPENDS THE LEAST AMOUNT OF MONEY PER STUDENT AND HAS MIDDLE OF THE ROAD GRADES, HOW CAN THIS BE??? THE PARENTS GET INVOLVED, WE ARE NOT IMMUNE TO PROBLEMS, THE SCHOOL MY WIFE WORKS AT IN PROVO UTAH IS 70% HISPANIC AND THE GRADES ARE STARTING TO DROP, GRAFFITI, VANDALISM AND STUPIDITY IS ON THE RISE.

Villaraigosa is a career redistribution-of-wealth, ethnocentic-grievance-mongering Leftist. I highly doubt this man and his followers are suddenly embracing conservatism when it comes to education.

As a LA resident I am awed by this. I must be dreaming. I never thought that the school board could stand up to the teacher’s union. Villaraigosa gets props for this.

Those who have been preying upon the golden goose are maybe starting to figure out that they could kill it. The charter schools will startle, being staffed by new and low seniority teachers while the union schools are staffed with the incompetent and tenured who have accumulated over time.

As goes California, so goes the rest of the country. Keep hope alive.

Then again, how much control will charter schools be granted over curriculum?

Outstanding! It would also be great to privatize the IRS so they can aggressively make sure we all pay the taxes we owe (none of this "under the table" junk, non-reporting of tips, non-reporting of gifts and other "found money"), plus we can privatize the highway system and be charged a toll on every road we drive on, privatize the police departments and the CEOs would not be down with this warning ticket jazz, privatize the fire department so you would have to compensate them even if your house burns down, privatize national and state parks so they can charge a real price to enter, privatize museums/art galleries/historical sites and so on and charge Disney World admissions, privatize libraries and charge a fee for every day you have a book out...sounds wonderful! Of course it is well known that private schools do genetic engineering and hire only the clones of the best teachers, because teachers' unions only let the worst teachers get hired in public schools. Also, it's high time that parents get charged for every bus mile, and every textbook and appropriate fees for lab equipment, etc. Another great thing is that parents should also have to start paying for their kid's lunches what they would be charged by any restaurant chain...perhaps even more! Ah, making money off of education! The colleges are doing such a wonderful job of that, let's be sure to bilk the K-12 crowd as well...and of course, we all know that private concerns would never hire Libtards, would never inflate their reported test scores, would never hire incompetents (NO company would dare do that!)... Do I hear the strains of Satchmo's What A Wonderful World playing?

Poor performing schools=minority schools.

Tony wants to control the LAUSD budget, currently more than the city of Al-Lay, as he calls it.

My fear is zealots will convert minority schools into liberal madrassas, like this one.
