Did Megrahi only have weeks to live?
posted at 8:48 am on August 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The Scottish government released the terrorist who killed 270 people in the Lockerbie-Pan Am 103 bombing for “compassionate reasons,” because they claimed he only had three months to live after being diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Scotland has begun to question where the government got that idea. Only one doctor was willing to make that prognosis, who apparently had no expertise in either prostates or oncology:
JUSTICE secretary Kenny MacAskill was last night under pressure to reveal more details of the medical evidence that led to the release of the Lockerbie bomber, after it emerged that only one doctor was willing to say Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi had less than three months to live.
Labour and Conservative politicians have demanded the Scottish Government publish details of the doctor’s expertise and qualifications, amid suggestions he or she may not have been a prostate cancer expert.
The parties have also raised questions over whether the doctor was employed by the Libyan government or Megrahi’s legal team, which could have influenced the judgment.
It turns out that other doctors had been consulted in the case, none of whom were willing to say that Megrahi was even dying from the disease. In fact, one said he seemed suspiciously asymptomatic for a patient with the kind of diagnosis that Scotland asserted:
The medical report stated that the “less than three months to live” prognosis was: “In the opinion of Megrahi’s (the name or title of the individual was then blanked out] … who has dealt with him prior to, during and following the diagnosis.”
There was also a suggestion that Megrahi might not be as ill as had been claimed. The report said: “Clinicians who have assessed Mr Megrahi have commented on his relative lack of symptoms when considering the severity and stage of underlying disease.”
And suggestions that the doctor who gave the prognosis may have been employed by the Libyan government emerged in the report’s notes. It said that a professor from Libya had been involved in Megrahi’s care and the medical officer who wrote the report had been “working with clinicians from Libya over the past ten months”.
Both parties now want the doctor identified in order to determine whether the government allowed itself to get hoodwinked by the Libyans. The alternative theory would be that the government wanted to construct a good cover story for Megrahi’s release for other reasons — for instance, oil deals, as Moammar Gaddafi hinted and his son flat-out claimed.
The government thus far has refused to identify the doctor and says speculation on the length of Megrahi’s life is “tasteless.” But that was the basis of Scotland’s decision to release a mass murderer after serving only 11.57 days for every life he took. The Scottish government made the calculation of Megrahi’s life expectancy into public policy, and it’s completely dishonest to now claim modesty and etiquette when challenged on it.
Perhaps we won’t know how long Megrahi has to live until he actually dies, but I suspect we have a better idea of how long the Scottish government will survive. I’m betting Megrahi outlives their current administration.

What can you say to such blatant manipulation as this. When you are sentenced to life, you will die from something. So, why would he be granted a “compassionate” release for any reason? He was supposed to die there anyway. This whole situation stinks.

I still think the Scots should have just strapped a suicide bomb belt on him and sent him to Iraq. Just cutting out the middle man.
As a nurse, I’d say he’s too darn healthy looking to be terminally ill. My Grandpa died of prostate cancer and he looked terrible for months before his death.

That oil is running out but your overall question is to the point. Why doesn’t the UK reopen their old railways and lessen dependence on foregin oil that way? Why doesn’t the US drill for oil and sell the surplus to Europe, brining the latter out of the Arab/Russian orbit? I don;t knwo the answers to these questions. Our misleaders are so inept it’s as if they were trying to fail.

maverick muse on August 26, 2009 at 9:06 AM
Okay, so putting aside the heinous injustice of the event. The problem for the Scottish gov’t is that the bigger picture may not, in fact, be the oil/gas. They’ve ticked off ths US, but more importantly given their political enemies within the government more than enough ammo to oust the party, which had only a tenuous hold on power prior to this incident.
It is reprehensible that this man be viewed as an “asset” in any way, shape, or form. And those that may have done so will have to answer for that.

If they made it there they escaped the wrath of victim’s family…if not, oh well. But only the family could pursue the criminal, not a lynchmob. I wish our prisons felt the same- a refuge from the wrath of the victims and overseen by priests.

There is something very wrong with this story. The British Government said it had nothing to do with it and that the Scottish pseudo-government (it is not really a government, more like an especially pompous regional body) insisted this man had to be released. Now the grounds of the release are suspecting and everyone’s dummying up.

To begin with, I am outraged by the Scottish and British governments. I believe he should have been kept in prison, and I believe all medical efforts including medication should have been suspended. If he didn’t die of direct causes of the cancer, he may very well have died of kidney and or bladder failure in the three months. It would have been very painful.
That said, in my mind, I am outraged an order of magnitude more by the actions of our government by it’s continuing actions to bring down and punish the government of Honduras by restoring the tyrant Zeylaya. All based upon the statest, socialistic whim of Obama, and his wish to ally himself with the hemisphere communists including the Castro’s, Chavez Ortega, and Moralas. Restoring Zeylaya could easily result in turning Honduras into another failed state like Cuba.
Our actions with regard to Honduras are terrible. Much worse are the actions of Obama and his allies in government and press in destroying a significant part of our formerly covert security structure.
The actions of our government are two orders of magnitude worse than those of MacAskill.
