Dems’ new rallying cry: Let’s pass this trillion-dollar travesty for Teddy
posted at 3:20 pm on August 26, 2009 by Allahpundit
Makes sense. He was an archetypal tax-and-spend liberal and the living symbol of dynastic politics. What better way to mark the passing of a royal than to deplete the state treasury erecting a monument to his greatness?
Just as Limbaugh predicted, incidentally.
Jennifer Duffy, a senior editor at the Cook Political Report, said the news will strengthen Democrats’ resolve to get a bill passed. But it’s unclear whether they will work harder to get a bipartisan bill that can pass the Senate or decide to go it alone.
“Maybe, at least within the Senate, it takes on a more civilized and bit more somber tone,” Duffy said…
Now, it’s possible congressional negotiators could invoke his memory to convince some of those wavering senators.
“I’m sure this is going to come down to cloture votes,” said a health care source. “That is one place where his ghost, so to speak, in the chamber could have enormous impact.”…
[A] former Democratic Senate staffer turned health care lobbyist said Kennedy’s death could bring [Orrin] Hatch back to the Senate Finance Committee’s negotiating table that he recently left.
In theory it’ll be harder to pass ObamaCare without Kennedy since the filibuster-proof majority is momentarily gone, but either (a) the left will use that as moral cover to invoke reconciliation and pass it with 51 votes (“we wouldn’t have had to do it if Ted was still here!”) or (b) the very principled nonpartisans in Massachusetts state government will let Deval Patrick quickly appoint a successor, a power that was removed from the governor in 2004 — on Kennedy’s urging — so that Mitt Romney couldn’t appoint Kerry’s replacement if he won the presidency. In the meantime, the exploitation’s already begun: Madam Speaker was out of the chute at 2:30 a.m. this morning in politicizing Teddy’s death to serve the cause of ObamaCare, and no doubt we’re in for a humdinger of a commercial at the memorial service later this week. I wonder who’ll be tasked with the red-meat “do it for Teddy” eulogy? The One likes to stay above the fray in delicate situations so I’m guessing Kerry will do it; he’s always been politically tone-deaf so he should be an easy sell.
Exit question one: Will the media’s “do it for Teddy” narrative going forward touch on any of the inconvenient facts about Kennedy’s politics, like, say, that he opposed universal health care when Nixon pushed it or that he was rather a stickler about government regulation of medicine when it came to abortion? Exit question two: What’s the statute of limitations on “do it for X” appeals to public sentiment? I can think of a few programs — missile defense, social security privatization — that Reagan would have loved to see. How about a “block it for Ronnie” campaign against ObamaCare on the right?

Yes, the N.O.W. gang strongly supports Ted Kennedys tirelessness in working toward a woman’s right to be the meat in a Kennedy/Dodd waitress “sandwich”.

After watching these supposed “womens rights groups” champion the Clinton’s and Kennedy’s,then stand by and watch the hateful bigotry hurled at Condelezza Rice and Sarah Palin, the least they could do is be honest enough to label themselves the protectors of “liberal women and liberal women only”.
Baxter Greene on August 26, 2009 at 4:09 PM
You’re correct, but if Aetna insures lesbians it’s gonna have to insure gay men, and well they have the highest incidence of AIDS. Just thinking from an insurer’s perspective.
jimmy2shoes on August 26, 2009 at 4:10 PM
She was always very open with me. After 15 years of marriage, she told me, she was attracted to a co-worker. It was drastic, but we handled it in a positive way. We’re still good friends, but she thinks that being in a SS-relationship will help her with her identity.

Personally (I’m old fashioned), I think a man should be able to get a job that offers him insurance. Women, different story.
MeatHeadinCA on August 26, 2009 at 4:17 PM
You know, what’s going on now, to me, politically speaking, is just the usual August stuff.
It gives people a reprive from Congressional action. We get to chew it up and think it over, both or multiple sides.
But, I’ve been reading a lot of history lately. Some of these debates go on for decades.
That’s our way.
AnninCA on August 26, 2009 at 4:17 PM
People getting all weeweed up?
I don’t know though. I have some lifelong Dem friends in construction – real blue collar. They are POed. I’ve never seen them this way. Well, maybe on 9-11. I think there is a change coming, but it’s not what Obama wanted. Just mho

That sounds a little sexist, meathead.
HornetSting on August 26, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Teddy’s death still doesn’t change the future dynamic in either chamber. Many, if not most, who vote for this bill will still be out of office in 2010. The only every day folks who will dedicatedly mourn Ted are the far left, the pols and their lackies and the denizens of the Boston Irish pubs and neighborhoods mentioned earlier on this thread. The rest of the populace will move on rather qucikly after the dependably tedious and over done festivities are over. There’s little in this world that’s more forgettable than a deceased Senator.

bluelightbrigade on August 26, 2009 at 4:38 PM
I think you guys have infected me. I no longer really view this issue as radical.
Before Palin, I have to admit. The idea of anyone who really, really thought that toting a gun was good for anyone sort of got put into the pile of “nutcases.”
I’ve never shot a gun in my life, btw. And I intend to die that way. I’m opposed.
But what’s interesting about politics to me is that it opens up viewpoints. I thought the animal rights people were way wierd, too.
I realized that I did accept that people in odd parts of the country, such as Alaska, use guns for useful reasons.
Now, showing up to a rally with a gun?
Sorry, you’ll never get my approval on that nonsense.
But controlling wildlife?
Different story. We have to strike a balance between national and state, between opinions. If you ask me to make a gun law?
You turn those weapons over, immediately. You ask someone who actually has reason for one? Different opinion.
I never support anyone who thinks carrying guns is the answer to violence. Hello. They mostly kill family members.
But there are legitimate uses.
AnninCA on August 26, 2009 at 4:38 PM

I’m petite. Honestly, you guys are just way out there.
I’ve been a typical working mother, a typical wife, a typical whatever, all of my life.
I think it’s been great. Thank heavens I don’t relate to people with severe disabilities in our world. On the other hand, I think that raising kids, trying to juggle marriage and multiple jobs, etc., has been challenging. I see why so many of us fail to execute our original goals.
I think people, in general, need a bit of a break. We’re all trying.
Whether we’re conservative or liberal, we’re all just trying our best.

The liberals see at least 2 weeks of wall-to-wall liberal Teddy tributes ending with the gala, “bigger-than-most-President´s” state funeral. It will have more entertainers and speech givers than Michael Jackson´s memorial.
Obama will give a eulogy speech that the libs will deem the greatest ever given by a President.
It will be used by the Democrats to “re-ignite the Obama message of Hope and Change for America”.
“ObamaCare” will be changed to “TeddyCare” (and, Dem advisors will say, it even almost sounds as harmless and friendly as Teddy Bear. And everyone likes their Teddy Bear…er, TeddyCare.)
Wonder if anybody will do a cartoon of Teddy standing at the crossroads of Hell or Heaven and then Mary Jo K. suddenly appears and kicks Teddy`s butt down the long hole to the land of the Satan?
