Dems’ new rallying cry: Let’s pass this trillion-dollar travesty for Teddy

posted at 3:20 pm on August 26, 2009 by Allahpundit

Makes sense. He was an archetypal tax-and-spend liberal and the living symbol of dynastic politics. What better way to mark the passing of a royal than to deplete the state treasury erecting a monument to his greatness?

Just as Limbaugh predicted, incidentally.

Jennifer Duffy, a senior editor at the Cook Political Report, said the news will strengthen Democrats’ resolve to get a bill passed. But it’s unclear whether they will work harder to get a bipartisan bill that can pass the Senate or decide to go it alone.

“Maybe, at least within the Senate, it takes on a more civilized and bit more somber tone,” Duffy said…

Now, it’s possible congressional negotiators could invoke his memory to convince some of those wavering senators.

“I’m sure this is going to come down to cloture votes,” said a health care source. “That is one place where his ghost, so to speak, in the chamber could have enormous impact.”…

[A] former Democratic Senate staffer turned health care lobbyist said Kennedy’s death could bring [Orrin] Hatch back to the Senate Finance Committee’s negotiating table that he recently left.

In theory it’ll be harder to pass ObamaCare without Kennedy since the filibuster-proof majority is momentarily gone, but either (a) the left will use that as moral cover to invoke reconciliation and pass it with 51 votes (“we wouldn’t have had to do it if Ted was still here!”) or (b) the very principled nonpartisans in Massachusetts state government will let Deval Patrick quickly appoint a successor, a power that was removed from the governor in 2004 — on Kennedy’s urging — so that Mitt Romney couldn’t appoint Kerry’s replacement if he won the presidency. In the meantime, the exploitation’s already begun: Madam Speaker was out of the chute at 2:30 a.m. this morning in politicizing Teddy’s death to serve the cause of ObamaCare, and no doubt we’re in for a humdinger of a commercial at the memorial service later this week. I wonder who’ll be tasked with the red-meat “do it for Teddy” eulogy? The One likes to stay above the fray in delicate situations so I’m guessing Kerry will do it; he’s always been politically tone-deaf so he should be an easy sell.

Exit question one: Will the media’s “do it for Teddy” narrative going forward touch on any of the inconvenient facts about Kennedy’s politics, like, say, that he opposed universal health care when Nixon pushed it or that he was rather a stickler about government regulation of medicine when it came to abortion? Exit question two: What’s the statute of limitations on “do it for X” appeals to public sentiment? I can think of a few programs — missile defense, social security privatization — that Reagan would have loved to see. How about a “block it for Ronnie” campaign against ObamaCare on the right?

If you can’t politically exploit the death of one of your own, what’s the point in being a Democrat ?

elgeneralisimo on August 26, 2009 at 3:43 PM

Now, tea party protesters are like… misogynistic mass killers!

UC-Berkeley: Town Hall Protestors Take The Obstructive Way

It’s very easy to blast your way into the headlines and become the de facto winner of any argument, just by sheer firepower. The man who killed a handful of women at the gym early this month discovered this. His sick rant is now publicized all over the nation, thanks to his murderous rampage. Had he merely tried to argue his points, standing up in a discussion reasonably and making his case, he’d be a nothing.

The tea-party town hall protesters have learned this lesson well. They’ve discovered that there is no need to put forth good arguments, or to meaningfully debate their ideas at the congressional town halls set up just for that purpose. Why do that, when they can go on a rampage, yell and scream, intimidate and threaten?

I am thinking that this is going to backfire on the dems. Teddy was not well liked outside of New England and his death is going to remind people in the heartland about the ‘Swimmer’ incident.

Uh, er, because he inherited the Viet Nam War from JFK and LBJ, who had escalated it from a few CIA types to millions of men? Sure sounds like their logic.

Patrick S on August 26, 2009 at 3:43 PM

I kinda hate to invoke Rush, but he is doing a helluva job today getting out ahead of this by pointing out quite eloquently that Teddy didn’t have to stand before any death panels at his hour of need, and in fact was able to seek out — free of government interference — the very best life-prolonging private health care money could buy. I believe Rush ended with with “Teddy(‘s) Care for ALL!”

I have no doubts that Obama and Pelosi think a wonderful political opportunity has just landed in their laps. I also have no doubt that they’ll be as stunned by the negative reaction to their crass politicization of Kennedy’s death as they were by the negative reaction to the House bill. Rush is right. Kennedy’s reaction to his illness is a testament to free choice in health care. Somehow he managed to live and die without government being “a partner with God” in life and death, as Obama proposes.

Frankly, isn’t this the real goal of exchanging ideas? We get to do this?

I’m still in favor of public option, or at least the initial spirit of it.

That hasn’t shifted and won’t.

I’m clear on this one.

AnninCA on August 26, 2009 at 3:40 PM

What? I’m just trying to tell you this isn’t politics as usual. Politics as usual has led us to this dangerous point in our history. This is a fight for our survival.

Everything the pseudo-democrats propose is geared to take our money and liberty. If you look at their actions that way, it might make more sense. They are if nothing else … devious bastards.

The democrats don’t exist anymore. The party has finally, after decades of putting their people in place, been taken over by communists, progressives, socialists or whatever you want to call them. They are desperately trying to transform the US into a hellhole where they and only they hold all power over our lives.
Please start thinking and believing your own eyes and ears.

” November 9, 2002

Did the memorial service for Paul Wellstone cost Democrats the election?

A backlash against the politically charged service almost certainly helped Norm Coleman beat Walter Mondale for Wellstone’s Minnesota Senate seat. And a private poll by Bill Clinton’s former pollster, Mark Penn, suggests the service backfired on Democrats nationally as well.

Penn found that 68% of voters knew about the servicea high awareness of an event broadcast live nationally only on C-SPAN. What’s more, 49% of voters said the service made them less likely to vote for a Democratand 67% of independents said they felt that way. One Democrat who quickly sensed that the service was a political disaster was Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, a possible 2004 presidential contender.”

Frankly, I’m glad for those memories. Goodness knows, I’m probably never going to experience that again.

Again, I repeat. I’m in my 50′s, show it, and I figure I’m never going to be naked again for any reason, unless it’s in a medical emergency. *haha

So knock off the nonsense. Picture me as your great aunt.

Hey! Meathead’s an old gray guy … only he doesn’t pluck. You know, he has those bushy brows and 4 foot long ear hairs.

Don’t forget the horny, yellow toenails..and with the blue pill, that’s not the only thing that’s uh, horny.

I can handle a Clinton/Johnson Dem. A Carter – hell NO!

MeatHeadinCA on August 26, 2009 at 3:53 PM

Agreed. Bill Clinton was centrist enough to tolerate. Obama’s aligned himself with the far-left of the party and isn’t letting go. Of course, Bill Clinton mostly became centrist after the the healthcare defeat and especially around the 1996 election. I’m not so sure Obama will moderate himself the way Clinton did. I believe he will be reelected.

ObamaCare/KennedyCare, its the same crap sandwich.

Typical liberal hero:

A SOBER LOOK AT TED KENNEDY

http://men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_5585

Their dates, two very young blondes, leave the table to go to the bathroom. (The dates are drunk too. “They’d always get their girls very, very drunk,” says a former Brasserie waitress.) Betty Loh, who served the foursome, also leaves the room. Raymond Campet, the co-owner of La Brasserie, tells Gaviglio the senators want to see her.

As Gaviglio enters the room, the six-foot-two, 225-plus-pound Kennedy grabs the five-foot-three, 103-pound waitress and throws her on the table. She lands on her back, scattering crystal, plates and cutlery and the lit candles. Several glasses and a crystal candlestick are broken. Kennedy then picks her up from the table and throws her on Dodd, who is sprawled in a chair. With Gaviglio on Dodd’s lap, Kennedy jumps on top and begins rubbing his genital area against hers, supporting his weight on the arms of the chair. As he is doing this, Loh enters the room. She and Gaviglio both scream, drawing one or two dishwashers. Startled, Kennedy leaps up. He laughs. Bruised, shaken and angry over what she considered a sexual assault, Gaviglio runs from the room. Kennedy, Dodd and their dates leave shortly thereafter, following a friendly argument between the senators over the check.

More great memories of the liberal lion:

Brasserie II: On September 25, 1987, Kennedy and a young blonde woman—identified by several sources as a congressional lobbyist—allegedly got carried away at a wine-fueled lunch in a private room upstairs and succumbed to the temptations of the carpet, where they were surprised in a state of semi-undress and wholehearted passion by waitress Frauke Morgan. The room, located next to the restrooms, is secured only by a flimsy accordion door, which could not be fully closed. Morgan declined to be interviewed for this story or to comment on or refute the accounts of other sources.

However, waitress Virginia Hurt, who says Morgan described the scene to her shortly after witnessing it, recalls, “He was on the floor with his pants down on top of the woman, and he saw her and she just kind of backed away and closed the door. The girl didn’t see Frauke. So Frauke went downstairs and told the manager and [another waitress] overheard.”

To bad Mary Jo didn’t survive her alcohol induced escapade with this liberal hero.

Maybe The NOW organization for women could rename themselves after Kennedy since these are the people they champion the most.

As conservative we can’t take this lightly. Like it or not the left has been given an opportunity to trump logic and get this vote through on emotions. We need to remain rational and present arguments that make sense. If we go about it by being negative on Kennedy and his life we will likely lose. There are a lot of democrats who are wavering as our message gets through to them. We should simply stay on message.

Don’t knock it, ann. I think you’ve found a kindred spirit, a radical ex hippy on a conservative site that cannot make up her mind where she stands, but let’s us all in on her mental doodling….meat might be the answer to your question.

HornetSting on August 26, 2009 at 4:02 PM

I think that it should be easier for gay couples to get insurance – I think Teddy would have done that. It’s hard for my ex to get her girlfriend on her employers plan. :/

MeatHeadinCA on August 26, 2009 at 3:58 PM

Most insurance providers probably look at the high risk of disease when making decisions to insure gays. Honestly, I can’t blame them.
