The problem with Sheehan is that she was lying, and that she increased her disingenuous rantings as she realized that it made her popular with the press.
For what its worth, I still don’t buy into the idea of “absolute moral authority”. I think what welcome_ghosts said is offensive and pretty much made him/her sound like a complete moron, but I think the “BUUUURRRRN HIM!” type stuff is a little over the top. And I think this David Hendrick fellow seems perfectly capable of defending himself… it isn’t like welcome_ghosts (and others who will undoubtedly follow) insulted a 6 year old girl and stole her cookies.

At the time the right claimed she was set up as an absolute authority figure to protect her from criticism, and this rationale led them to skewer her merrily. Something tells me if the left started acting similarly with this guy massrighty would crap his pants.
The campaign HQ attack was just something I had remembered from a few years ago, and I thought it was an even more extreme example of someone “going after” Sheehan. But it wasn’t really what I had in mind when I made the original point.

She was set up as an absolute authority figure… because as such she was a potent, emotional weapon to harm the president. The problem with the concocted “absolute moral authority”–beyond the fact that such a concept is ridiculous in the context of a mother who has no expertise on conducting wars and should therefore have no authority at all–was that it was used to prevent people from pointing out simple facts, such as the fact that she was lying about not getting a meeting with the President.
If you are aware of some lie being perpetrated by this retired Marine which he is only allowed to perpetrate due to his “absolute moral authority” then maybe you have a point… IF you can find anyone who actually claimed that he had such authority. I certainly haven’t seen it.
