GOP congressman: Hey, maybe I’ll sue over Obama’s birth certificate; Update: Franks won’t sue
posted at 5:52 pm on August 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
Sounds good. With ObamaCare melting The One’s poll numbers and a legislative tsunami rolling in on the Democrats, what better way to capitalize than with a crackpot distraction that’ll give every loose cannon on the America right a soapbox on MSNBC?
Note to John Boehner: It’s time for a closed-door “strategy session” with House Republicans on this subject.
The other main issue dealt with numerous speakers questioning Obama’s birth certificate and why there wasn’t an investigation into whether he is a naturalized citizen. One woman said a newspaper announcement of his birth in Hawaii was not sufficient. Another asked how he could have a passport without a birth certificate.
Franks said there was not enough evidence that Obama is not an American citizen. He did say there was a lot of conflicting evidence of Obama’s citizenship and that he was considering filing a lawsuit, the only congressman to do so. Franks asked why the president did not simply produce a birth certificate.
One speaker, a pre-school teacher, tearfully said Obama denounced the country as a Christian nation and warned he should learn a civics lesson. Franks agreed with her saying he was offended that Obama denigrated the country on an overseas trip and the president should speak in favor of the country when abroad.
As recently as last month, Franks was a vocal anti-Birther. I assume he flipped after seeing the Birther polls, which is insane if true: No one’s going to mount a primary challenge over this issue but it’s a handy bludgeon for Democratic challengers to use in the general election as an appeal to centrists. Even more depressing? According to lefty stat-meister Nate Silver, the GOP’s momentarily favored to pick up Senate seats and break the Dems’ filibuster-proof majority next year — unless they end up kneecapping themselves with this, of course. Exit question: If Birtherism flames out, what’ll be the next spark for an anti-Obama conspiracy theory? Hmmmmmm.
Update: Franks’s spokesman says it’s all a big misunderstanding.
To clarify — the Congressman’s comments at Saturday’s Mohave County town hall were misrepresented in the original report that you quoted. His statement was that he had, at one time, considered the possibility of filing a lawsuit back when the issue was first brought to his attention before and just after the election. However, after compiling and analyzing a significant amount of research, including looking into all the pertinent public records such as the “short form” birth certificate, the affidavits from public officials certifying the existence of the long-form certificate, and the birth records in the local Hawaii newspaper, it was his conclusion that the evidence indicated that Barack Obama was indeed physically born in the state of Hawaii, and that there was NOT a sufficient basis to file a lawsuit. Nothing has changed since then and he has been quoted multiple times in the press as saying that the believes “Barack Obama was born in Hawaii when Hawaii was a State, and therefore is a Constitutional, natural-born citizen of the United States.” The Congressman continues to maintain that belief.
That being said — he also believes it’s ridiculous for the President of the United States, who ran on a platform of transparency and accountability, to dismiss so glibly the concerns of literally millions of Americans, and allow such a ridiculous debate to continue when it could so easily be settled once and for all. It should not be too much to ask for the leader of the free world to allay the concerns of a large number of the people he represents by producing his long-form birth certificate, which is the definitive, inarguable way that he can put people’s concerns about his national identity to rest for good.

I’m torn.
I KNOW he’s a citizen, but I push the birther issue myself because I think it speaks to obama’s lack of transparency (more infuriating after all the ‘release your life’s records, sarah palin!’ the dems did 2 days after palin’s nomination)
I think the important thing is: is there anyone in america that is turned OFF by a conspiracy so much that they will vote the other way?
I say no.
Show me one person that voted Gore in 2000 because of outrage over “clinton body count/vince foster” arguments
Show me one person that voted Republican in 2006 because of outrage over the 9/11 truthers
Logic would say: Show me one person that said “yknow, I dont like birthers, so I guess I’ll support ObamaCare”
In every case, the answer is “ZERO PERSONS”, so my take is:
FULL SPEED AHEAD!
The rise of Trutherism coincided with the Dem resurgance in congress, so it’s not exactly a sign of death.
People that hated the gop will still hate them, people that like the gop will still like them
Again, what kind of person will NOT vote gop because of birtherism? Describe them to me!

battleoflepanto1571 on August 24, 2009 at 5:58 PM
Dammit.
There are thousands of ways to fight Obama.
Regardless of whether there is any truth to this issue or not, it’s a lightning rod for the MSM and Dems to take heat off resistance to HR 3200.
C’mon, people. Strategery please. As in, cost v benefit analysis. This one is dead.
Instead, IMHO, we should be doing three things, explicitly:
* Kill Obamacare dead;
* Eradicate Waxman-Markley cap & swindle; and
* Force Congress to turn the spigot off Spendulus.
And push for 2010…

It’s a dead issue, it’s not going anywhere. I’m curious as hell about what’s so top secret about this birth certificate and college records, but we won’t see them. AP nails it, the man and is adminstration is making the 3 Stooges look competent. Their numbers are sinking as more American’s wake up to the fact they were duped. RE; Glen Beck’s info on Van jones, for those that missed it:
0bama’s ‘Green energy’ Czar (the guy that thought up C4C) is / was:
1. Black Panther radical, many arrests, and at least one conviction. Served time in prison.
2. Long time Communist Party member / activist.
3. Considers himself to not even be an African- American, but an African.
Probably the worst thing about the guy is that he is a graduate of Yale Law….
That alone is horrible, but he said that he made a choice between that and throwing bombs… Figured he could be more effective bringing the system down from the inside (I’m paraphrasing). Apparently he was correct.

Right now, I’d like to see his college transcripts more than his long form BC. I’m about 95% convinced that he was born in the U.S. I’m 99% convinced that his college records will contain info that would be so damaging and so embarressing to Zero thatr his chances for reelection in 2012 would be nil. For the record, I also believe that his BC contains toxic info about this fraud-in-chief, but that info doesn’t have anything to do with being born in Kenya.

Private Pyle, you have got to be sh**ting me!
Ask yourself, if this is such a good club to use against Obama, then why are Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, and Rachel Maddow bringing it up every chance they get. Do you think, for even a moment, that they do not understand exactly what they are doing? Are you sitting, thinking to yourself “They’re falling right into our trap”?
The political right has all the momentum right now. The public is with us on health care, on Card Check, on C&T. We are at the edge of a historic precipice, where we can kill off this abomination of a Presidency, provided we don’t f*ck it up!!
And playing the birther card is, in fact, f*cking it up.
JohnGalt23 on August 24, 2009 at 6:26 PM
1. did the ‘birthers’ hamper the dems in 2006 and 2008? if not, why were they different?
2. decades? how come the gop leads congressional balloting TODAY?
3. find me an approval poll of obamacare, capntrade, amnesty, etc. for this past week in august.
4. explain how such low approval numbers will keep the gop away “for DECADES”?
battleoflepanto1571 on August 24, 2009 at 6:26 PM
Maybe I’m wrong about this, but does anyone else see the possible goal here? We’ve had the alledged nutcases pursue this issue, but now that we have someone in the Legislative branch pushing for it, do you think that it’s no so much the birther issue but a plan to force the release of all his records. If that’s so, then I will support this crazy plan. Private citizen, “screw you”, member of congress, “maybe not screw you”.

Allahpundit is not “promoting it.” Allah is a hack. He’s not going to miss an opportunity to call those who disagree with him all sorts of names. Read every post he makes on the subject and they’re filled with such terms as “crackpot”, “loose cannon”, or other classic words of ridicule. He gets off mocking and ridiculing his readers on many issues, whether it be those who admire Palin, those who are Christian, or those who believe it doesn’t make any sense for Obama to be spending huge amounts of money to prevent people from seeing his long form birth certificate or his college transcripts and financial papers.
What makes it worse, is he’s not even able to be honest about it, continually repeating the false claim that he’s “already shown his Birth Certificate” while knowing this is simply not true. Even Ed gets into the dishonesty game in claiming that Hawaii is simply not allowed to produce a long form certificate. Even a regular senior citizen doesn’t have much trouble proving him wrong.
It’s impossible to assume that Allahpundit, with the job that he has, is simply uninformed. It’s far more likely that he’s simply a dishonest hack.
What’s truly confusing is why Allahpundit works for Michelle in the first place.
Gregor on August 24, 2009 at 6:40 PM
Trent Franks is a good conservative…the left takes this stuff and runs with it……I doubt very seriously if it was a main topic at his town hall…and I agree with Franks…it IS ridiculous to not produce the document… or at least show why it cannot be produced rather than just dismissing the matter…

Frank’s responce was spot on!
Its the tactic I’ve been trying to get the GOP to use… ie… we don’t really believe in the question, but we must defend the VOTERS right to ask it.
Win/Win!
GOP does not get painted with the Birther meme!!!! GOP does NOT tick off the “birthers” (which some of you are accomplishing)… and best of all… we may actualy get our questions about what a “Natural Born Citizen” is answered by the Supremes.
Romeo13 on August 24, 2009 at 6:53 PM
That’s a great link you’ve got there.
Do you know what it tells me.
It tells me that 83% of independents disagree with the Birthers, and as such, probably think they are morons with whom they want to be as far away from, politically, as they possibly can be. 83%.
If we have to play to the political right to win in ’10, then we are already f*cked. Fortunately, we don’t have to. The GOP will come out to stop Obama, come hell or high water.
The question is, what will the independents do. Check out the exit polls from last time (I’d provide a link to them for you, but for some reason CNN links get lost in the ether around here… sorry). We lost independents by 8 points, and moderates by 21 points.
And now, with the policy debates going on, we are carrying those groups. Indy’s and mod’s are clearly opposed to ObamaCare, and I think you’d find similar numbers associated with C&T. In short, the more the middle sees of Obama’s policies, the less they like him.
But if we start championing positions that 83% of the middle not only disagrees with, but by all indications find irresponsible and crazy, then we are preparing to piss it all away.
JohnGalt23 on August 24, 2009 at 6:53 PM
So, if that’s true, please explain why he’s never once argued the birth certificate issue based on facts. Instead, he simply posts links along with a few paragraphs of ridicule. When those of us have asked him to argue the facts, he vanishes.
He’s a hack. Plain and simple. He used the same exact tactic on the ramos and compean issue. At least Ed argues facts, even if he’s got several wrong on this issue.

I agree, “hack” isn’t the right word. But as I’ve been stating for 5 hours (and the Franks people echoed this), he was clearly misrepresented. You could figure that out from the article in MDN; “there wasn’t enough evidence to say Obama is inelligible, but Franks might sue”?: it didn’t add up.
Why AllahPundit didn’t notice this independently or note I had already posted this 5 hours ago, I have no idea. Lazy, I guess, but not a hack.

BTW…when I moved to DC and went to the DMV to change my driver’s license from another state…guess what I had to get a copy of? Yep…and not just a photocopy…an actual document from the state I was born in…just to get a license in DC…meanwhile…

It’s not the COLB part that’s the problem. Or the fact thay anyone who is a birther in not capable of independent thought. Hell, Obama could have been born on Mars and nothing would ever happen to him to affect his presidency. I think a lot of so-called “birthers’ just want a little of what he promised in his campaign…transparency. Why did we listen to the crap about GWB being a C student even though I think he is the only POTUS to have an MBA. If you have nothing to fear or worry about, release info on your past. Not that tough. Unless…….

Another dude who thinks it’s cool to alter your stance on issues for the purpose of getting elected. How did that work out for those who insisted we had to go with John McCain in order to bring in independents?
Way to learn.
Those who follow your lead are dishonest. They’re fake. They’re frauds. If you want to fill the party full of frauds, have at it.
Oh wait. Too late.

Done it many times, along with many others who I’m in contact with. He ignores you. You’ll notice, that he won’t jump in and comment on this either. He never does.
