Gallup: Obama’s weekly average approval rating hits new low

posted at 8:12 pm on August 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Geoff A., behold the wages of ObamaCare: A 10-point drop in approval since June, shrinking The One’s s spread from 62/31 to just 52/41 now. I’m not sure how he expects to rebound, either. In all likelihood he’ll end up with a watered-down health-care bill that pleases no one; meanwhile, he has to deal with Holder’s divisive crusade against the CIA, the possibility of a double-dip recession, escalation of a war in Afghanistan whose support is crumbling, and of course the bombshell that’s set to burst officially tomorrow about another $2 trillion being added to the White House’s deficit projections. Things are, it’s safe to say, well and truly wee-wee’d up.

Note the data point below. Now you know why Michael Steele’s suddenly a big fan of Medicare.

The other demographic that’s showing a steep drop-off? Households that earn $90,000 or more, down eight points in just two weeks as they brace themselves to be soaked in fulfillment of The One’s utopian dreams. Exit question: How soon before Obama follows Clinton’s lead and embraces the small-government centrist Democrat within? Not before the midterms, I’d guess.

Blowback

I don’t think Obama is going to do what Clinton did. He is not that smart. I don’t think he would let Holder turn the Justice Dept into a political wing of the Democratic party if he wanted to go to the center.

Terrye on August 24, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Well he still has $700,000,000,000.00 in his Stimulus war chest. I anticipate he’ll direct this money to the regions where Democrats are getting pounded in the polls. Republicans will likely have control of the senate and congress within 2 years. Do you ever wonder if the Democrats realize that because they have abandoned the American people and alienated any bipartisan intentions that they will be treated accordingly?

Liberals are silly people, funny to watch them pretend to be adults.

Also a little how-to-lie-with-statistics doesn’t hurt. If you look at RCP averages since a month ago (say, July 25th): his approval rating has dropped almost 3 pts; his disapproval is unchanged. These polls have gotten to the point where they realize they can’t fudge the top number any longer. So, they under-report the disapproval, anything to keep the spread in double digits.

He does not have the ability anymore to proclaim himself the anti-Bush. Recent polls have shown that he is being viewed as a liberal, and that perception is becoming his reality.

I think that people at first did not want to believe that Obam was a Far left as he is. But, starting with wanting to charge Veterans for Medical Benefits, the lights have slowly been coming on. And now, with the Healthcare Debacle and going back on his decision to investigate the CIA, he is helping his numbers tank big-time.

kingsjester on August 24, 2009 at 8:37 PM

Obama follows Clinton’s lead and embraces the small-government centrist Democrat within? Not before the midterms, I’d guess.

He can’t…he’s already trapped by the left wing of his party…he’s already making them nervous. Any ‘clinton-esque’ moves to the center and the left will attack like pit-bulls, while the right and center will suspect it’s just another rhetorical trick.

And this is the best case…for as much as a slime-ball as Willie Jeff was, he was, in fact, ‘slick’. He was smart and competent enough to get away with it…based on his performance so far, my guess is that even if The One wanted to shift back to the center, he’s not smart or competent enough to pull it off…and events (of his own making) are catching up with him way too fast.

I know I’ve said this on here before, so sorry if I’m repeating to you.

Justice Thomas was writing about this concept in his dissent to Grutter v Bollinger, emphasis mine:

These overmatched students (or presidential candidates, for our purpose) take the bait, only to find that they cannot succeed in the cauldron of competition.

In other words, you can be placed in a job by affirmative action, but affirmative action is irrelevant once you’re in the job. At that point, you’re judged by performance, not on what racial demographic the company (or country) needs to fill. And likewise the citizenry have watched Obama, from the Left and Right, and IMHO deemed him unsatisfactory (if, albeit, for varying reasons).

That’s a fine idea but having read Daily Kos daily since the election, Obama’s erosion of support with those guys is not from being too far Left. Essentially you’re proposing a replay of 1996. The difference being is that Clinton won a second term — after the GOP took congressional power two years earlier — by seeming more moderate than he might really have been. I truly doubt Obama will move to the Right; I really think he would rather go one term, get everything he could and take one, so to speak, for the Fascist (sorry, no better word) Team — set things in place that can’t be reversed after the GOP take back the House, even if it means losing a reelection bid.

Well, it worked in the 90′s for Billy Jeff.

Mostly because Slick Willy is a master politician to whom being liked was more important than breathing. Remember his popularity cratered in 1994 under similar circumstances, an unpopular Congress that was embroiled in corruption scandals, and he also attempted to push a very unpopular government health care takeover scheme.

The irony is the Gingrich Revolution of 1994 probably saved him in 1996, because Clinton did go along with what was popular, such as welfare reform (after being dragged kicking and screaming) and he did hire Dick Morris who advised him to ride the wave. Ironically, one of the things he did was shut Hillary up, her public profile after the failure of Hillarycare was limited to trashing women Bill had affairs with.

I don’t think 0bama has either the instincts or the ability to morph with change like Clinton did. 0bama is a true leftist ideologue, a community street agitator, who is used to always getting his way because no one has ever dared tell him “NO”. He’s not even, in the truest sense, even a politician. Politicians exist to get re-elected. What 0bama is doing is completely NOT in his best interests if he wishes to get re-elected.

JellyToast on August 24, 2009 at 9:05 PM

JetBoy on August 24, 2009 at 8:58 PM

I honestly don’t think so.

If 0bama had any political instincts at all he’d have dropped government healthcare weeks ago when he lost even his own party on it. Remember, we don’t have the power to stop it, only democrats can stop anything 0bama wants to do, and, because congressional democrats have a greater understanding of political mortality than 0bama does, they are resisting it.

I think 0bama is such an ideologue that he plans to harp on this until he gets it, even if it means losing everything in 2010-2012.

Then again, government healthcare IS the “holy grail” of leftists everywhere, because it is the wedge that allows for the true nanny state, in which the government can dictate to you virtually every life choice down to what food you eat, so maybe he thinks that blowing his presidency to get it is worth the cost…

OT: Apparently, Obama just renominated Bernanke.

How soon before Obama follows Clinton’s lead and embraces the small-government centrist Democrat within? Not before the midterms, I’d guess.

I won.

We need a scorched earth policy to rid the party of neocons.

The only way that happens is if the left helps us with war crimes trial for the Bushies.

But they are welling to sell out completely because they need “national unity” to pass their new Obamacare and some of the other pet projects they want republican support for so it makes it difficult to accomplish anything.

We need to keep the nation divided for the Libertarian movement to flourish.

Way OT

My golden just cornered an possum in the back yard. Can you beleive it? Right here in the middle of the city. Oh well that possum won’t be runnin’ in 2012.

Hey,, Drudge is reporting that an Obama panel is warning that 90,000 may die from swine flu.
Is it just me?? I do not remember in the past when a government agency predicted something like this.
This sort of bothers me and I’m not sure why. Seems like they are fanning the flames of fear.
Nothing like throwing out predictions of 90,000 people dying to start some hysteria.
Nothing like some hysteria to create a new crisis.
Nothing like another crisis that is too good to waste.
With this administration and with the kind of czars this guy has appointed,,, a flu epidemic is a crisis that could be used to achieve quite a lot. None of it good.

“NEVER let a crisis go to waste” -Rahm Emmanuel

I think that they are PRAYING (probably to 0bama) that swine flu ends up mutating into something that they can turn into a crisis. I think they are not above manipulating this into something they can use to SCARE people into accepting 0bamacare.

Isn’t it time to start a tracking poll on Pelosi?

Exit question: How soon before Obama follows Clinton’s lead and embraces the small-government centrist Democrat within?

Not gonna happen. He’s too arrogant. Most all his life he’s been told how great he is, and people have bent over backwards to pave his way with palm fronds. He doesn’t think he has to change. He’s not been wrong because the rules have been re-written to make sure that doesn’t happen (Rule #1: I am never wrong. Rule #2: In case I’m wrong, refer to Rule #1). Other people will just need to adapt to him, or they will be dealt with by his entourage, as has been the case so far.

He’s like the high school all-star stand-out. Everyone loves him because he plays sports so well, then gets recruiters from big-name universities knocking down his door to sign and play for their team. Then it’s plastered on every newspaper in the country, and blared on ESPN, what school he chooses. He has two good years of playing in the NCAA, wins the Heisman, and then cuts school short to declare for the pros. He gets drafted high, finds himself a ruthless agent and signs for millions of dollars based on his long-term potential. He boasts and brags about his talent and how much he’s going to contribute to his new team. And, after all that, his career craters because he can’t compete at the professional level.

The Telephone Pole Stapler-in-Chief is the quarterback on a PWee-Wee football team that just got promoted to the NFL.

0bama can’t follow Slick Willie’s example b/c he doesn’t have a clue about how people who live west of the MS river and/or south of the Mason-Dixon line think. At least Slick Willie could fake it.

Good thing voter turn out is so high for the 18-30′s during mid-term elections.

I mean, otherwise if I had a (D) by my name I might be a bit worried.

Rovin on August 24, 2009 at 9:20 PM

San Fran Nan, the queen of Botox would only be in trouble with her electorate if she were perceived as not being far ENOUGH left, in which case someone like a Cindy Sheehan would win her seat.

The problem is her district doesn’t represent anywhere near the majority of districts that elected the democrats to congress, which is why having her as their leader is foolish.

Look at what it’s doing to Harry Reid, his state is nowhere near as lefty as he is, and by following in Nan’s footsteps he’s basically losing in the polls to… well, pretty much anyone who bothers to run against him.

wildcat84 on August 24, 2009 at 9:24 PM

It would be political suicide for Obama to slide to the center and try to win back support that has been firmly lodged in the Clinton camp for a decade. He’d be walking right into the Clinton buzz-saw and kissing the far left a longing farewell. He simply can’t afford to do that. Right now, he’s on thin ice with the left and he’s a lefty to the core. Nope, can’t see that happening….
