AmSpec: Why did Democrats choose 9/11 as the national day of service?
posted at 9:27 pm on August 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
The story burns hot with outrageously outrageous outrage, but I can’t lie. I’m not feeling it.
This effort to reshape the American psyche has nothing to do with healing the nation and everything to do with easing the nation along in the ongoing radical transformation of America that President Obama promised during last year’s election campaign. The president signed into law a measure in April that designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service, but it’s not likely many lawmakers thought this meant that day was going to be turned into a celebration of ethanol, carbon emission controls, and radical community organizing.
On the Aug. 11 call, Yearwood and other leaders kept saying repeatedly that they wanted 9/11 to be used for something “positive,” “forward-leaning,” and “productive,” said a source with knowledge of the teleconference.
The plan is to turn a “day of fear” that helps Republicans into a day of activism called the National Day of Service that helps the left. In other words, nihilistic liberals are planning to drain 9/11 of all meaning.
“They think it needs to be taken back from the right,” said the source. “They’re taking that day and they’re breaking it because it gives Republicans an advantage. To them, that day is a fearful day.”…
They view Sept. 11 as a “Republican” day because it focuses the public on supposedly “Republican” issues like patriotism, national security, and terrorism.
The boss is right about how this dovetails with Obama’s own insulting, sophomoric reading of 9/11 as being fundamentally about a dearth of empathy, an understanding so facile that it would be cringed at in a dorm-room circle. (Is there any act of cruelty, in any context, about which the same couldn’t be said?) And to the extent AmSpec’s saying that, for many progressives, the big lesson about the attack going forward will be to smile on your brother, get together and try to love one another right now, well, fair enough. But it ain’t the day of service that’s inculcating that outlook; that’s just kind of … how they are. All this does is give them an outlet for it.
What it sounds like, though, is that AmSpec’s claiming this is some sort of nefarious plot to brainwash the country into forgetting what happened that day — i.e. to “reshape the American psyche.” Er, really? Leftist phone banks about gun control are going to dim the memory of jihadists steering jumbo jets into the World Trade Center? That’s kind of like saying that if the left declared December 7 to be Drum Circle Day henceforth, the memory of Pearl Harbor would fade beneath the din of the sweet, soulful tapping on those bongos. Frankly, if there are any political repercussions from this at all (which I doubt), I’d imagine they’d redound to the advantage of hawks. Passing a crowd of college kids chanting about ethanol when you’re busy thinking about people jumping out of skyscrapers isn’t likely to convince you of the merits of ethanol, but it may convince you that those kids are callous douches who don’t have their priorities in order. What am I missing here?

Obama’s got a commercial running which starts with (paraphrasing slightly) “America’s greatness wasn’t just built with its skyscrapers… it was with the people on the ground, working and organizing”…
It’s a huge f*** you to everyone who gives a crap about this country. It’s as big an f*** you as his nonchalanting of the flower at the WTC, and Chewie’s absence at said ceremony.

9-11 should be 9-11
9-12 would have been a wonderful day as a “day of service”
9-12 was the day that Blood Drives really swung into gear, Girlscouts did projects to raise money to send to NY, every grocery store in my Chicago suburb had jars at the cash register collecting money, firefighters from around the country were sent to NY etc etc etc.
9-12 was the day that we went to work to change the horror of 9-11. 9-11 belongs to the victims of the terrorists and as a stark reminder to our government that THEY MUST ACT AS ONE to prevent another attack.
But todays with the news of investigations AGAIN into the CIA just proves to me that the second part of remembering 9-11 has already been lost and that more innocent victims may be lost in the future.

Why not make 9/11 a day of tolerance and charity towards Muslims?
I mean if, as the liberals say, our Cowboy attitude and existence and general unfairness to the Muslim world was the cause of 9/11 why not use 9/11 as a device to help the Americans understand those fears and help to allay them by offering up soothing and cool words, diplomatic latitude, and teaching moments?
On 9/11 we should all fast from Pork, where a Hijab, and pray towards Mecca 5 times, so as to show we can change and discard all the discord caused by Bush and Cheney and his CIA. On 9/11 we will declare an end to torture. We will show the Islamic world that we will no longer live in the past but look strongly to a future where we can live side by side (or maybe a little behind until we become truly believers) with our brothers; sisters naturally should be hidden away.

Wow, skipping past the brawl going on, I’ll try to address Allahpundit’s question. I was born 20 years after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I remember December 7th as a day of infamy because our nation chose to remember it that way. Had we decided to make it “Earth Day” when I was five years old, by the time I was of voting age, “Earth Day” it would have been – and remained. Yes, I would have rejected the kum by yah (sp?) drums, because that’s the way I am, but, would I have embraced the meaning of the attack on Pearl Harbor? Not so much.

On September 11, 2001, 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings. Both buildings collapsed within two hours. The hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane. There were no survivors from any of the flights. In all, 2,993 people died. The overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 90 different countries.

indypat on August 24, 2009 at 11:41 PM
Look Allah, the progressive left in the media has already bent over backwards to mute the memory of 9-11.
By the 3rd anniversary the libtards were all rolling their eyes and going “Oh God here we go again; can we just have a brief moment of silence and get it over with?”
No showing of the jumpers, the smoking craters; most news shows will just show a BRIEF CLIP of maybe ONE of the planes hitting the towers.
They’ve been hoping the public’s appetite for 9-11 rememberance will dim for some time.
It’s no surprise at all that the politicos in Washington D.C. wanting to dim that memory even further would do something like this.
National leaders and national media CAN bury memories if they are determined not to remind, or celebrate something. They simply ignore it. Or downplay it as much as possible.
And anybody who thinks the progressive left does not downplay not only the memory of 9-11, but also THE LESSONS we should have learned on that day, has NOT BEEN PAYING ATTENTION the past 8 years.

Anyone who wants to denigrate 9/11 from anything than a remembrance of a lot of very brave people needs to be put into a room for about a week and have film running over and over again of the 4 planes hitting, bodies falling from the Twin Towers, people running and crying, clips from the funerals that seemed to run almost nonstop for weeks . . . how can we forget that day??? I never will. I still feel the fear that I felt watching the second plane hit the south tower. Then there was the Pentagon getting hit. It didn’t seem to have an ending.
Schumer and BO need to be unceremoniously kicked out of office. And very, very soon.

I resist any tampering with the true meaning of 9/11. I’d get behind any effort to make it an annual day on which we thank our military personnel, firefighters, police, EMS and other protectors for their sacrifices. Something like “Protectors of America Day” or “Defenders of America Day.”
And every 9/11, we should see that documentary — was it on Fox? — that goes hour-by-hour through the day, and it should be mandatory for showing in schools, so that none of us forget the horror, the loss, and the resulting determination to prevent another 9/11.
KyMouse on August 25, 2009 at 6:44 AM
With 365 days in a year and probably 300 of them on which nothing significant has happened it is obviously an attack on the meaning of 9/11. It is like declaring the day on which Martin Luther King was assassinated as a day to celebrate the Confederacy.

percysunshine on August 25, 2009 at 7:12 AM
Heaven knows 9/11 existed outside the space-time continuum to the point it was about a war that chronologically followed it by a solid two years.
To all mindless, ignorant, despicable liberal troglodytes:
9/11 is not a day the right “owns” except in your miniscule excuses for minds. How many liberals do you think got killed in the WTC? I’d bet on a majority.
But leftists aren’t liberals anymore, they are statists, and I doubt many of those were in the WTC. But since statists hate America more than they love each other anyway, and since statists would sooner march for foreign tyranny than protect domestic liberty, these little Eichmanns think a day of national sorrow is nothing more than a political tool of an adversary.
BKennedy on August 25, 2009 at 7:23 AM
This is going to fizzle. Conservatives far outpace liberals in the amount of time we donate to charitable causes, and the reservoir of time from which we draw does not include work days. Last I looked, September 11, 2009 falls on a Friday, and I’m scheduled to work that day. I suspect the same of most of my conservative peers.
So, if any liberals show up to do a Day of Service, they’re either taking vacation (fat chance) or they’re unemployed (far greater chance, given the economy our President is building for us).

Color me among the disgusted. Unlike us, America’s youth have little or no memory of 9/11 and I’d wager that very few of them under the age of 14 have seen the images of the World Trade Centers collapsing.
The subliminal message is that if only we’d had more community organizers and paid volunteers we would not have been a target of Jihadis on 9/11.

I drive an old muscle car – and it’s in pretty decent shape. Two weeks after September 11, I bought a simple American flag magnet to put on the car. Upon seeing it, one of my senior managers, a liberal, immediately commented:
“Cricket, that’s fine looking piece of steel you have out there. Too bad you had to screw it up with that cheesy flag.”
Republicans didn’t hijack 9/11 from the Democrats. The Democrats simply refuse to embrace 9/11 for what it is. An immoral attack should pull us together – politics stopping at the water’s edge and all that. But to do that, we all have to at least like each other and who we are as a nation. Americans used to possess that kindness for one another. Liberals and Democrats shed that simple kindness long ago.
They have excluded themselves from 9/11 heritage because they had previously excluded themselves from American heritage and community.
They want to change 9/11 into a thing they can understand and embrace, because they are unable to embrace their contrymen. They’ll fail, of course.
As for the Republicans, we reacted like Americans and we won’t be deterred in our commitment to our heritage.

Um, OK so I only made it through High School and 25 years in the business world but does this statement make sense to anybody? And can you actually use a day as a human shield? If so we should notify the current administration immeaditly so they can start to recall all of our troops and start allocating days. Thanks Buddy!!!

Idiots.
It became a day of looking forward, a positive day…the day that George W. Bush declared War on the terrorists and never took the heat off.
Plans to ‘reshape the American psyche’
Well, they’ve been doing it for years. Check your local public school.

Unreal. Laura Ingraham played audio of Obama’s prayer for the start of Ramadan that he delivered Saturday night. I hadnt heard about that until I heard it from her. Where was his prayer on Good Friday? on Easter?
I cant even imagine what he will say on Christmas..considering the Obama’s dont even celebrate it.

Just because it won’t work doesn’t mean they aren’t trying to do it. How many Far Left causes are out there that have had little success? Tons. This speaks more to the attempt rather than the outcome.

How dare he disdain one of the most tragic days in American History….I believe libs have lowered themselves to beneath contempt on this one.
How does it feel eh?
I remember EXACTLY where I was that day, I could not tear myself away from the TV, I think I went through 4 boxes of tissues, I periodically go to Youtube and purposely watch that day. I still need a box of tissues….
Onward Forward and Upward!!
