Why Sarah Palin should not leave the room
posted at 11:30 am on August 23, 2009 by Doctor Zero
When I began writing for Hot Air, I never imagined I would find myself critical of Charles Krauthammer twice, after only blogging for four months. I’ve followed his work for years, and still eagerly read everything he publishes. He writes brilliantly on many topics, but he just doesn’t get Sarah Palin, or by extension her supporters… which by further extension means he misunderstands the precarious moment America finds itself in, and the opportunities that lie ahead for conservatives.
Let me dispense with the most controversial part of Krauthammer’s recent Town Hall column first: this condescending nonsense about asking Palin to “leave the room” while “we have a reasoned discussion about end-of-life counseling.” There’s only one group of people who needs to leave the room during that discussion, and it’s the socialist zealot in the White House, along with the craven cowards in his party. They’ve already demonstrated a remarkable gift for swiftly leaving the room when people start asking tough questions, so we’ll hardly notice when they slink out. Maybe while they’re gone, they could find the billions in Cash for Clunkers money that vanished into thin air.
Those Facebook pages she’s tossing around like ninja throwing stars are eloquent proof that no one has the right to pat Sarah Palin on the head and send her out of the room, while the grown-ups settle down to serious talk. She isn’t just writing snarky rants. She’s providing both devastatingly effective criticism, and substantial policy alternatives. It’s fairly obvious the White House paid a great deal of attention to her infamous “death panel” column. I haven’t seen that many people turned into nervous wrecks by Facebook since the last time the “Mafia Wars” servers went down.
As many others have noted, Krauthammer begins his latest essay with his bizarrely offensive demand that Palin “leave the room,” then spends the rest of the essay essentially agreeing with her. It seems fair to say that his problem is more with her style than her substance. He misconstrues the “death panel” comment in a manner that suggests he might not have read her original Facebook posting. The “death panel” solar flare occurs in this paragraph:
The Democrats promise that a government health care system will reduce the cost of health care, but as the economist Thomas Sowell has pointed out, government health care will not reduce the cost; it will simply refuse to pay the cost. And who will suffer the most when they ration care? The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.
There is no doubt Obama and his allies want to drive the United States toward a single-payer health system. Some of his more colorful co-conspirators, like Barney Frank, aren’t particularly cagey about it when they speak in front of friendly audiences, and Obama himself has expressed that desire in the past. A health-insurance industry dominated by a tax-subsidized public option, whose vampiric “providers” can re-write the laws of the industry to destroy their nominal competitors, will inevitably collapse… leaving only the government. Tossing a shark into your aquarium is not a good way to enhance “competition” among the fish. When America inevitably loses enough blood to lapse into a single-payer coma, there will be rationing, and that means government functionaries will decide how the limited pool of medical resources is allocated. I don’t think “death panel” is an unfair metaphor for the resulting system, and the sense of dread it provokes in the listener is entirely appropriate.
The death panel doesn’t have to take the form of nine robed Sith Lords, stamping your grandmothers’ termination orders with a giant red skull, then handing them to a ghoul in surgical scrubs. It will be no less deadly if it consists of thousands of faceless government drones in cubicles, processing Quality of Life spreadsheets and crossing out the unlucky Social Security numbers with pink highlighter pens. In fact, my only quibble with Palin’s prediction is that, given the style of the current Administration, it is much more likely that we’ll have a Death Czar. Using the same Noonan-swooning judgment that gave us a tax cheat for Treasury Secretary, Obama will appoint a serial killer to the position. The Death Czar’s first official act will be spending $2 billion in taxpayer dollars to hire a Brazilian company, which will extract organs from Americans after they receive their end-of-life counseling, then ship them overseas for use in foreign patients.
What Palin brings to the health-care debate is the energy, wisdom, and wit to make complex ideas understandable to ordinary people. Let me once again restate my admiration for Charles Krauthammer before saying, with regrettably brutal candor, that Sarah Palin had more impact on the health-care debate with one Facebook note than everything Krauthammer has written in the past year. That’s not because people are shallow, and didn’t pay attention until Palin kicked off a media firestorm. It’s because they understandably seek out leadership on complex issues, and leaders have a knack for rendering fearfully complicated issues down to their essential truths. Ordinary Americans are more eager to entertain appealing speech from an engaging personality, than sign up for a long series of dry lectures, no matter how brilliant the lecturer might be… and they don’t view their ballots as comment cards, to be completed on their way out of the lecture hall.
Every political movement needs both academic intelligence, and vital charisma. The Left has always viewed the relationship between its intellectuals and politicians as something like the production and marketing departments in a business – and when it comes to accumulating power, socialists are all business. People like Saul Alinsky and Bill Ayers spent decades weaving the strings that control the Obama marionette. They openly wrote of their understanding that savvy merchandising would be needed to make the public accept their agenda, at least until the public no longer has a meaningful choice about accepting it. When was the last time you heard a leftist intellectual belittle a popular liberal politician, the way Charles Krauthammer treated Sarah Palin?
The challenge for conservatism is to educate the voters in its basic principles, since they received no such education in the public schools. Conservatism always triumphs on the elementary questions of freedom and capitalism. The ideas of the Left are diseased in root and branch – history has shown there is no need to allow them to blossom, in order to see they are poisonous. Conservatives who allow themselves to be dragged into bickering about page 945 of a 1200-page bill have already conceded far too much of the debate. Americans deserve better than being told to sit down and shut up, while Washington plays Jenga with Obama’s obscene health-care proposals. They should be angry and insulted their time and money were ever wasted with this madness.
If Obama were the CEO of a private company, he would have already been “asked to leave the room” by the shareholders, and he’d be driving home in tears, listening to voice mail messages from the company lawyers. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to dispose of corrupt and incompetent elected officials… which is why they should be provided with the smallest possible operating budget, watched like hawks, and kept out of everything that isn’t their explicit Constitutional duty. We can begin the process in 2010, and finish it in 2012. I’d like to have both Charles Krauthammer and Sarah Palin in the room while we prepare for battle. I know she won’t ask him to leave.

I disagree. The idea that profit makes things more expensive is exactly what is wrong. It is profit and the market which makes things cheap!!!
Everything else you said is, in fact, correct. It is profit, which makes it so. The government is inefficient, not because of corruption but because of the lack of a profit motive.
Furthermore it is profit which is used to maintain capital infrastructure and to pay for research. Look what happens to the roads when government puts all its resources into welfare.

Sarah Palin would have a lot more credibility if she gave interviews and went on those Sunday news programs. No one besides her supporters think she is writing those Facebook pieces herself.

Peri, just wanted to note for you that placing commenter’s words into a quote deletes emphasis and bolding, so including them actually requires manipulation of the comment after putting it in quotes.
Not that I’m following your spat or that my above observation actually applies, but I saw your last entry and recognized the possibility of a misunderstanding based on a quirk of the system that I’ve had to learn to deal with myself.

Untrue. The bill says that private insurers cannot sign single users (ie… not group plans through companies) to “old” contracts. Right now, health insurance is ridiculously high for single users. The bill would set regulations to help control those plans. Insurers CAN still sign single users, but not under old, unregulated contracts.
FlyoverJ-HawkFan on August 23, 2009 at 7:09 PM
I think it’s wonderful for private citizens to donate to groups that provide healthcare to those who can’t afford it. There are groups right now that do that.
But I don’t think any private org has the capacity that the federal government does to provide a viable healthcare option for every American.
Didn’t I ask you to back up an assertion that you made? Still waiting on that…

In theory, yes, that should be the outcome and normally is the outcome in a properly regulated market that ensures and protects real competition.
But look at the numbers and tell me how the free market has “made things cheap” in the US experience? How does big pharma spending on cute blonde sales reps and marketing at the rate of $150k per physician make the system better for patients?
http://www.kff.org/insurance/snapshot/chcm010307oth.cfm
The costs of today’s system are not sustainable. It took 8 years of deficit spending under Bush for some so-called conservatives to finally face the reality of national debt on the country’s financial health. When will we finally face up to the ticking time bomb in today’s health care system? The nation continues to age, and health costs will only continue to escalate.

I called her schizophrenic earlier cause she keeps changing her thought pattern. Really weird.
FlyoverJ-HawkFan on August 23, 2009 at 7:56 PM
That’s not my point. What part of the majority of Americans that do not want the federal government to provide a viable healthcare option do you not understand?
FlyoverJ-HawkFan on August 23, 2009 at 7:59 PM
What free market ???
The root of the problems are the government programs:
– medicare etc
– employer subsidies for insurance
There has been no market for about 70 years. See Peter Schiff on Youtube. Also some Friedman videos.
gh on August 23, 2009 at 8:00 PM
“properly regulated” is not a “market”
The legal system provides protection for private contracts. At least it’s supposed to. There needs to be some serious reform there too, to eliminate extortionists like John Edwards.

CCRWM on August 23, 2009 at 8:11 PM
Your conclusion does not make any sense. The assorted manifestations of Obamacare bills have been deemed “unsustainable” system twice by CBO spokesman Elmendorf. If the health-insurance program becomes a nationalized single-payer system, the deficit will bankrupt the nation. All signals point to the Left’s legislators and Obama himself wanting to move us to a single-payer system.
onlineanalyst on August 23, 2009 at 8:13 PM
I hate to be the one to have to say this, but I need to be brutally honest. Although I admire his intellect and his political analysis and I agree with him most of the time, Charles Krauthammer is one of the things that is wrong with conservatism. He is a caricature of a conservative. He’s an old white guy who is not very likable. Both his demeanor and appearance are off-putting. The main reason Obama won the election was because enough people found him to be a likable person. Gruff old white guys are a turn-off (remember Bob Dole?). Of course, such superficial concerns shouldn’t matter, but they do. It’s hard enough getting people to buy into the conservative philosophy that we don’t need to have face men who are considered to be troglodytes. Sarah Palin is attractive not just because she is a beautiful woman, but also because she has personal magnetism and regular people can relate to her. At the end of the day people want a leader, not a reptilian college professor. Krauthammer and his ilk are the ones who need to leave the room for a while.

This is gold right here and one important reason why I support Palin.Does she need to show an ability to handle the international front as well as the domestic,…yes but there is time for that.
She has a unique ability to reach into your living room and communicate with Americans instead of condescending double talk sprinkled with nuance.
This is very important and now that the public is gaining a serious dis-trust of Obama, will become even more important as time goes along.
People are already tired of listening to Obama speak and then have to go through each word to try and figure out what he was really saying and what he left out to create loop holes for his true agenda to be inserted later.
(the 800 billion stimulus that went from creating or “saving” 3-5 million jobs and keeping un-employment at 8% but failing on both points is a good example of this.
First we “had to have it now” passed without even reading it turned into “it is going to take a while to work”.)
It is apparent that many people are also turning their back on the MSM as a reliable source of news. This will only help Palin as it is well documented the press spent all their time in the dumpsters in Wasilla instead of vetting the radical ties of our current President:

I think that somewhere around 85% of Americans currently have insurance coverage, and it works very well for many of us. I think that there are some flaws in the system, but you don’t take a car that runs pretty well but needs a tuneup in to get a complete engine overhaul, especially if the “mechanic” (read government) did more harm than good when fixing your neighbor’s car.
Seriously- steps for improvement:
A. Get more truth into billing and reimbursement. It’s crazy that a procedure that actually costs $5,500 gets billed as $10,000, with the insurance negotiating a $4000 discount and the patient paying the other $500 as a deductible (for example). Bill, and pay, what it costs.
B. Change the rules on flexible medical spending accounts so tax-deferred contributions can roll over year-to-year. Some Health Savings Accounts allow this, but many are a “use-it-or-lose-it” annual plan. You have to guess how much to put in each year, get tax advantages, but either come up short in the account if you have unexpected costs or purchase things you may not actually need (e.g., new glasses, dental work that could wait) in December so you don’t lose the money. Let it roll over, encourage people to put in and accumulate more, and they can cover more expenses out of pocket. Which allows-
C. Encourage higher-deductible “catastrophic” type coverage. Premiums are lower if the insurance company is only sending checks to cover the broken arm, not the poison ivy. People will think more about what is actually worth seeing the doctor for if they spend money out of a medical account they control, than if it’s “free” by showing an insurance card.
D. I think we could see an explosion of “Doc-in-a-box” type places, if minor illnesses could be treated without excessive fear of frivolous litigation.
Probably leaving a few things off, and these are just my thoughts, but there it is.

The Republicans have to come up with solutions that are creatively brought across to the public (to beat the liberal filter in the MSM) combined with strong leadership.
By the time 2010 comes around (and 2012), I believe the American people will want more than a failed community organizer that can’t even go to the bathroom without his teleprompter running the show.
Even though congressional polling is looking more favorable, Republicans still have not made much headway across the board to run the country better.
Of course we are only 6 months into “Hope and Change” so with the right moves made by strong, decisive, leadership coming from the GOP, I think that can change.

I’m largely in agreement with Doctor Zero about the points he made in his article, including his point that the American conservatives could usefully speak more respectfully of each other in public. Nevertheless, it seems one reason the left and left-”liberals” are such sh1theads may be precisely that they aren’t often enough critical of each other.

Listen up, folks.
Call Ann an idiot, troll,whatever.
I think, closer to the truth, is she has multiple personality disorder.
I’m no doctor, but life observations coupled with the fact that I once lived with someone like that, I can speak with some degree of expertise.
Personally I think she’s relatively harmless.
I promise you, she does not possess the ability to change anyone’s mind here.
These poor souls change personality in an instant. Believe me, I’ve seen it.
But much like Alzheimers, ignorance is bliss to the afflicted.
I could be wrong.

I, for one, would like to congratulate all who held lovely conversations with AnninCa throughout the entire day. And for those who didn’t throw their keyboards against the wall, I admire your fortitude.

Thanks Doc Z- you took the words right out of my head! Great post – I anxiously await Sarahcuda’s next facebook and even more anxiously await Obummer’s next lame response!

Krauthammer is one of those who are amongst the few hundred to whom you will never be able to ask a question.
Used to be a bigger number than that, but we just figured out that the policians can’t get away with not allowing questions.
We need townhalls for media svengalis too.
Buddahpundit on August 23, 2009 at 9:27 PM
I don’t think I can embrace the “Sybil” theory but I agree with you that she is harmless and can certainly generate comments. I think she’s Allah in drag.
Cindy Munford on August 23, 2009 at 9:27 PM
I noticed Lox had better sense than to engage her much today:)

This strong disapproval despite the media’s all out blitz to love everything Obama
It is almost scary how delusionally obsessed and committed the MSM @ the “smart ones” are to everything Obama:

I don’t know, I think earlier he was giving her instructions on how to use the “quote” icons and even suggested improvement to her format. But that was in self-defense so he could try to understand an ongoing conversation. I always feel bad when people pick on her.
Cindy Munford on August 23, 2009 at 9:30 PM
Yeah. Can we get the good doctor to do all the SP posts from now on?
I mean, hell’s bells. His are positive towards Sarah and they generate the same number of comments. That’s the idea, right?

Great roundup.
These morons thought he was being reflective when it took him three weeks to answer a question. Now we find out all that nuance was just stupidity.

You are 100% correct. I have said several times and will say it many more times to come, that when the history of this era is written the biggest story will be the abdication of the press to perform their constitutionally protected duties.

I don’t really like to gossip, but she is very mean to people here, and relishes getting them upset.
tessa on August 23, 2009 at 9:37 PM
She’s the enemy when that or those particular personalities emerge, my dear Lox Lox.
Lanceman on August 23, 2009 at 9:38 PM
It could be Multiple Personality Disorder.
My hypothesis has been that more than one individual is sharing the same TrollinCA ID.
I have been studying the matter.
Even Stephen King could not disguise his writing when he used a Pen-name. He was quickly discovered while trying to mask his identity.
If someone of his skill level can’t escape their own characteristic signature then its takes a true genuine psychotic, or different people to pull of what this troll is doing.
I have identified three personalities in this one Troll. Paragraph structure is one clue along with sentence length and structure. I think it is a team effort, otherwise it is MPD.

I am not a confirmed Palinista but I have an open mind, so I have no problem reading threads about her. I still save all of my political adulation for Pres. Reagan but I am developing an appreciation for Gov. Palin’s instincts. It’s fun to watch.
Cindy Munford on August 23, 2009 at 9:40 PM
Go ahead and gossip, hon.
Sometimes she can be quite agreeable.
