Good news: Feds pulling workers away from FAA to staff exploding Cash for Clunkers bureaucracy

posted at 6:30 pm on August 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

Move along. No cautionary tales to see here.

Employees of the FAA’s air-traffic-control unit were asked to help, but the Transportation Department stressed Friday that essential safety personnel were not diverted from their duties.

A total of 1,200 workers, including about 300 contractors from Citigroup, the financial services giant, are now working seven days a week to review applications and reimburse auto dealers for rebates advanced to customers, officials said.

The department tripled its program staff to 1,100 last week, and recently added another 100 headquarters employees…

The National Automobile Dealers Association, which had endorsed the move, urged the Obama administration late Friday to extend the deadline because the program’s Web site was crashing.

Percentage of dealer claims that had been reimbursed by the feds as of Thursday: Seven. How bad does a program have to be to goose sales as much as C4C has and still be badmouthed by the industry? This bad, I guess:

Laura Sodano, a sales manager at Curry Chevrolet in Scarsdale, N.Y., said dealers were not told why their applications had not been approved and were having to review the entire form to determine what went wrong.

“I don’t know one dealership that’s gotten paid yet,” Ms. Sodano said. “If they run out, we’re in trouble. It’s bringing us a lot of traffic, but it’s not a very good program.”…

If the funding is exhausted before all reimbursements are made, some dealers — and possibly G.M. — could end up having to write off the unpaid credits.

There’s actually a serious risk here that the feds are going to mismanage a simple car-rebate program into bankruptcy. Oh, and more good news: Confirming earlier suspicions, it’s foreign carmakers that are getting the lion’s share of the sales. Exit question: Which is more frightening as an omen for ObamaCare’s future problems? Yesterday’s $2 trillion upwards budget revision or this wheezing canary in the coal mine?

I have a friend that is a salesman and as of a month ago his dealership was waiting for the money for all 45 cars they sold under this program. A month later the percentage of unpaid to his dealership has remained the same but the number of cars has gone up. No one I know in the auto sales business sees this as a good deal.

The local Chevy dealer said he was accepting no more deals as of Thursday. Hasn’t been able to log onto the CARS system since then.

But don’t worry, they will bring in DMV and Post Office people to make sure healthcare is much better.

Unintended consequences; more car dealers going bankrupt?

Who is it who actually sells cars to the public? The auto manufacturers don’t sell directly to the end user. So the effect of car dealerships being forced out of the business is fewer sales staff actually selling autos at a time when the manufacturer needs to increase unit sales.

Other than gubment liability now for those ‘valued but unneeded for safety’ employees – if they have that many standing around in the FAA picking their noses they need to send some of them home. And how, pray tell, can they borrow from a suppossed civilian company to do gubment work?

But, ‘Bambi doesn’t like us criticizing his healthcare plans.

CITI gets contracted! The same CITI that got 45 billion in bailouts! I’d looooove to see the salary of those CITI contractors to make sure they aren’t getting “unjustly” compensated. Ugh. So let me see if I get this right: CITI goes bankrupt, get’s bailed out with our money, increasing the debt, then gets paid by our Government to run a bankrupted program that used debt money from the stimulus. Those in debt running a broke program, that was created with debt, and who are being paid with debt. I can’t stand this crap. Obama had better get Govt. healthcare passed soon so we can get back on the fiscal path.

Obama Census. “The Devil knows Best”

The Spanish-language soap “Mas Sabe El Diablo” (“The Devil Knows Best”) soon will treat viewers to more than the typical vixens and hunks.

A main character is set to become a census worker, a lackluster job more associated with tallying neighbors on the block than notches on the bedpost.

The Telemundo network sees the unusual casting not as a ratings grabber but as an awareness campaign underscoring concerns that the once-a-decade tabulation of the nation’s population faces especially severe challenges in counting minorities and hard-to-reach communities in Chicago and elsewhere.

When we have ObamaCare and they are backlogged in medical claim payouts…
tatersalad on August 22, 2009 at 6:53 PM

I represented a regional medical company forced into bankruptcy despite record profits. They were owed millions of dollars by both Medicaid and TennCare (Tennessee’s low income universal plan that ruined our state’s finances) for services rendered, but the reimbursement rate was too slow to allow for reasonable cash flow. Claims were often paid years after work was done. And more than $3 million was never paid at all.

Obamacare will be the world’s greatest boondoggle. I’m sure of it.

The plan has recorded more than 489,000 dealer transactions valued at $2.04 billion in rebates, according to Transportation Department data released yesterday. The department said it wouldn’t extend a deadline of 8 p.m. Aug. 24 for submitting applications for the rebates. It’s up to dealers to decide when to stop taking trade-ins in order to make filings on time.

Thursday, August 20, 2009 .GM to give dealers cash advances for ‘clunkers’
Robert Snell and David Shepardson / The Detroit News
General Motors Co. said today it will immediately start paying cash advances to dealers who have not been reimbursed for vehicles sold through the federal “cash for clunkers” program.

GM said the move will allow dealers “to have the liquidity to run their businesses effectively in the midst of this extremely successful program and to continue immediately delivering new vehicles to GM customers.”

The money to pay dealers is coming from GM’s general operating funds, which have been filled with more than $50 billion in federal loans. So government money is being used to pay dealers who are owed money by the government.

So,it appears GM is going to pay their dealers instead

Where is FEMA when you need them??
