Fox News: White House hired private firm to distribute Axelrod’s ObamaCare spam
posted at 2:59 pm on August 22, 2009 by Allahpundit
We can trust small-potatoes stuff like health care to the government, but when it comes to something as precious as spamming Americans with Obama propaganda, only an efficient market solution will do.
Chris Hansen, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union told FOX News that if the White House used the private firm, it’s the same as if it had sent the e-mails.
The White House insists that Govdelivery aggregates nothing and plays no role in the formation of its e-mail list; it is merely an end-product e-mail distributor.
Govdelivery does extensive work with a bevy of federal, state, and local agencies, including 11 Cabinet-level departments such as Defense, State, and Justice. Among the tasks Govdelivery performs are FBI internal e-mails and external regional crime alerts, and FEMA hurricane or other natural disaster alerts…
The White House notes that Govdelivery also handles mass e-mails for Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, both Republicans.
Two questions. (1) Did Govdelivery supply any of the e-mail addresses that ended up getting the Axelspam? The White House denies it but it’s still not clear why people who never signed up for their mailing list ended up receiving it. (2) More importantly, do the other pols and agencies that use Govdelivery use it to push items on their ideological agenda or do they limit it to official government business? There’s a big difference between FEMA spending tax money to issue hurricane warnings and The One spending it to push his policy wish list. And if in fact it turns out that Perry and Daniels are guilty of the same thing, why does that let the most accountable administration evah off the hook?
Update: An interesting e-mail from Guy Benson:
I mentioned this controversy on my show last week & got lots of calls from people who never signed up for WH emails (and never contacted the WH/Obama campaign) for any reason), and who still got spammed by Axelrod/Govdelivery. What they all had in common, though, was that they had each emailed their Democrat representatives (Reps and Sens) within a week of getting the Axelrod email…
Could there have been an unspoken/unofficial effort by the Democrat party asking its elected members to forward all constituent correspondence on health care to a centralized DC location….like, say, the “flag” snitch address? Perhaps that’s how these email lists were compiled.

That is the feel-good clip of the week so far for me. This congressman who he is speaking to is the one who accused townhallers of being “Timothy McVeighs”.

I bet the Democrats are going to demand the appointment of an independent counsel to sort this all out… right?
I mean, there’s nothing more important than the propriety of the executive office and congress is the watchdog of the executive branch…
Right?

If Obama values public-option solutions so much, why didn’t Axelrod stimulate the U.S. Post Office by sending his communications through snail mail?

Yep… depends on who is paying for it…
If the Govs are using campaign money… or its specificly funded by the State budget, it seems it would be OK to me…
BUT, if this is funded by the Whitehouse? With Taxpayer dollars WITHOUT a specific line item in the budget?
If the Republicans in Congress do not call for hearings on this… to find out where the money came from, they are blowing it.

It doesn’t matter who pushed the send button, in the end. What matters is that we know Axelrod was involved, and takes his marching orders directly from the President. Whether he did this in a rogue manner, or not…the buck stops at Obama’s desk.
Bottom line is…this came from the White House. They are responsible, and still act like the child who got caught red handed smoking behind the barn, but still denies any wrong doing.

1) The Obama administration using taxpayer money to send political propaganda,
2) Obama sending spam to those who never requested it?
Seems to me someone (Axelrod?) should be charged criminally.

It looks like they’re doing just like the Clinton WH did. Do whatever you want, whenever you want, and as unbelievably audacious as you want. Pretty soon, there’s too much for the average Joe to keep up with and then they’re desensitized to scandal. The next time something corrupt pops up, they yawn.
Not to worry though, I’m sure the NY Times and Washington Post are on the case.

Let me get this straight: the same government Obama wants to run health care can’t distribute e-mails so they have to hire it out? And exactly WHO is paying for this spamming, the U.S. government or the DNC? If the taxpayer is, it means we are paying to spam ourselves.
BTW: Axelrod is as nasty as he looks, same as Emanuel. I wouldn’t trust either of them to park my car, hell, they’d probably sell it.
bradley11 on August 22, 2009 at 5:25 PM
I believe this is happening for other topics too. I posted about that I received a letter from Sen Kennedy on the Hate Crimes bill even though I never contacted his office- I wouldn’t contact him because I LIVE in Illinois. The only Congressmen I contacted were Melissa Bean and Dick Durbin.

This is just another in a long list of examples of this administration’s arrogance and strong arm tactics. They don’t even care if people object, nor if it breaks the law… they’re going to do whatever it takes to ram this legislation through. Accountability? It’s right up there with being ethical.
scalleywag on August 22, 2009 at 5:30 PM
bradley11 on August 22, 2009 at 5:25 PM
No, I say they’d take it for a joyride first, bang it up, hire illegal third-rate mechanics to make it look new while futzing the inside, then they’d claim it gets 460 miles to the gallon so they’ll sell it for two times the market price of the Chevy Volt.
If anyone’s dumb enough to buy it, it’ll do two things:
Leak the car’s position to the WH every so often
Break down at three times the alert rate
And then you get sick of it, go to AutoTrader, and buy a H2.

Not sure why it took a news agency such as Fox News, or an ACLU lawyer to confirm this. Allah…you guys could have gotten this answer from your interactive firm, The Blog Studio if they’re worth anything.
Anyone sending mass emails to the public must send via a CAN-SPAM compliant white listed server/IP address. And companys like a Govdelivery, or Constant Contact, or Blue Hornet, or Eloqua work very hard to ensure their sending IP addresses are white listed to assure their clients that their emails will not be flagged as SPAM and end up in peoples SPAM filters or junk boxes…and they charge a premium for this insurance…per email address sent to.
Do to security reasons alone, let alone risking having a White House server black flagged, the White House would never send these emails via internal/gov’t servers. You can bet the ranch that not only did Obama use tax dollars to hire a private firm to SPAM us…they also paid top dollar for it. Tack on who knows how many extra dollars if they also paid for CAN-SPAM email list(s) to propagandize further than just their standard sheeple list.
