Factcheck.org: Tax money will pay for abortion in the health-care bill

posted at 9:00 am on August 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We already knew this, thanks to Rep. Zoe Lofgren and Barack Obama himself, but it’s nice to get confirmation from those fine folks at Factcheck.org — an Annenberg project, no less.  After Obama tried to paint it as a lie, the National Right to Life Committee insisted that ObamaCare would use taxpayer money to fund abortions.  It turns out that they were right:

The truth is that bills now before Congress don’t require federal money to be used for supporting abortion coverage. So the president is right to that limited extent. But it’s equally true that House and Senate legislation would allow a new “public” insurance plan to cover abortions, despite language added to the House bill that technically forbids using public funds to pay for them. Obama has said in the past that “reproductive services” would be covered by his public plan, so it’s likely that any new federal insurance plan would cover abortion unless Congress expressly prohibits that. Low- and moderate-income persons who would choose the “public plan” would qualify for federal subsidies to purchase it. Private plans that cover abortion also could be purchased with the help of federal subsidies. Therefore, we judge that the president goes too far when he calls the statements that government would be funding abortions “fabrications.” …

Abortion foes quickly denounced Obama’s statement as untrue. The NRLC’s Johnson said “the bill backed by the White House (H.R. 3200) explicitly authorizes the government plan to cover all elective abortions.” And our analysis shows that Johnson’s statement is correct. Though we of course take no position on whether the legislation should allow or not allow coverage for abortions, the House bill does just that. …

As for the House bill as it stands now, it’s a matter of fact that it would allow both a “public plan” and newly subsidized private plans to cover all abortions.

Factcheck uses the same reference that Allahpundit did when responding to the President’s insistence that his opponents had fabricated the abortion coverage.  They also note that a campaign spokesperson confirmed at the time that “reproductive services” included abortion.  Of course, this was in 2007, when Obama was still running to the Left.  Later he would temper his language to make his position more ambiguous.

At any rate, Obama was right — someone’s lying about abortion and ObamaCare.  It turned out to be Obama, that’s all.

Update: Obama keeps insisting that this is a “myth,” even in today’s weekly address:

“I want to spend a few minutes debunking some of the more outrageous myths circulating on the internet, on cable TV, and repeated at some town halls across this country,” the president said.

He ticked through a series of issues, saying that the proposal will not call for health care for illegal immigrants, will not provide coverage for abortions, and does not include any provision for so-called “death panels.”

“These are phony claims meant to divide us,” the president said.

Well, someone’s making phony claims, and according to Annenberg and the facts, it’s the White House.

Narcissist Personality Disorder

The most telling thing that narcissists do is contradict themselves. They will do this virtually in the same sentence, without even stopping to take a breath. It can be trivial. They will contradict FACTS. They will lie to you about things that you did together. They will misquote you to yourself. If you disagree with them, they’ll say you’re lying, making stuff up, or are crazy.

Obama has been welcomed into his dying ground, as Sun Tzu put it. He has no choice, he has to fight quickly and fiercely, not for victory, but for survival. He will either win, or survive, it is unlikely that he will do both. He can neither advance, nor retreat, he has hemmed himself in through poor leadership, opacity of his message, and outright untruths. He has no choice but to fight right away, but the fight is delayed, and it will come at a time of our choosing and the outcome already determined.

This statist liberal plan is being crushed under the hammer of liberty and upon the anvil of freedom.

True, we probably will never end the illegal immigrant influx. We are, however, bound by law and good common sense to not subsidize their illegal stay in our lands. Every single liberal policy in this matter involves some sort of subsidy to them therefore I will always be against those policies.

Case in point, we allow them “affordable” health care and do not deport them because you lefties think that’s wrong. We are now subsidizing the world’s population of sick people to come here for the best health care for not a whole lot of money, no questions asked. The system won’t survive for long on that, especially once they realize they can get all manner of government entitlement without the silly nusiance of taxes or immigration checks.

Alas, I’m feeding a troll that quotes Bawney Fwank. Obviously you will learn nothing, but it’s worth a shot.

From Msnbc:

Majorities in the poll believe the plans would give health insurance coverage to illegal immigrants; would lead to a government takeover of the health system; and would use taxpayer dollars to pay for women to have abortions — all claims that nonpartisan fact-checkers say are untrue about the legislation that has emerged so far from Congress.

Can you imagine how many court challenges will be coming down the pike when some sod doesn’t get their mole removed cleanly, or they have back pain continue after treatment for an injury. They try claim that the law will limit coverage. That claim doesn’t stand a chance against a judiciary packed with ‘empathy’.

Limerick on August 22, 2009 at 9:43 AM

Afrolib on August 22, 2009 at 9:25 AM

Way to plagarize Barney Frank, haha. I reject the entire premise of your argument. “Illegal aliens will continue being in this country and there is nothing anyone can do about that.” Enforcing our existing laws would fix most of the problem over a pretty short time without too much effort. Yes, a few will always be around, but nowhere near the current 12+ million.

But illegal immigrants isn’t really the topic here, is it?

Why does Obama feel forced to lie about what his signature legislation will actually do? He claims you can keep your current plan, but common sense and his own prior statements show that to be untrue. The whole “death panel” flap was all called a lie and a “distraction” for several days until the “death panel” provision was actually removed from the bill. Now we are going through the whole stupid process again. Obama claims that Government run healthcare won’t fund abortions, yet the facts are not on his side. Does Obama have no idea whats in the bill and just automatically deny that anything controversial in it exists and it’s all “misinformation” or does he know whats in the bill yet tries to decieve the public about it? Those are really the only 2 reasonable conclusions.

Mord on August 22, 2009 at 9:44 AM

When the President called us liars under his religion, remember his religion isn’t Christianity, so his blatantly dishonest condemnation was probably accurate within the intrinsic logic of his particular religion.

His religion is an anti-image of Christianity. Its a place where one is not to rise above one’s situation to a spiritual outlook, but instead to get “outraged” and “demand justice” and “get in they face”.

This is not a good man. He is a non-good man. A man who is a stranger to goodness.

Afrolib on August 22, 2009 at 9:25 AM

I’ll try to keep this simple since you’re obviously not very bright:

1. The illegal aliens won’t be paying for their own coverage under Obamacare, so we won’t be “forcing them to pay for affordable insurance” afrolib. The illegal aliens who currently don’t have health insurance are poor. They can’t afford to purchase their own insurance, which is why they don’t have any. Under Obamacare they still won’t be able to afford it — which is why they’ll get the new “affordability credits” to pay for it — “affordability credits” are essentially just welfare payments. That’s right, afrolib, we taxpayers will be financing the illegals’ new health insurance.

2. You said in another post that since we already pay for the illegals’ emergency room care now, we might as well pass Obamacare. But there’s a difference between paying for illegals’ emergency healthcare, and paying for ALL their healthcare needs. Under Obamacare, we’ll be paying for their abortions, their drug rehab, their colonoscopies, and everything else. Surely even someone like you can understand that that is going to cost us a lot more.

3. There certainly is something we can do about illegal aliens living in this country — and costing us Billions of dollars each year. We can enforce our laws and deny them the jobs and taxpayer-financed benefits that keep them here. We’ve already seen how effective that is in reducing the illegal population. But instead of doing that, you idiot Liberals actually want to increase the taxpayer-funded benefits available to illegals by passing a new entitlement program to give them “free” healthcare.

And you think we are the ones who can’t understand simple logic? Classic projection.

I suppose there have been a few “emergency” abortions performed at taxpayer expense. I’d guess the number is pretty low.

And emergency rooms stabilize patients regardless of ability to pay because of the Hippocratic oath…period.

What any of that has to do with paying for “free” health care for illegal aliens is beyond me. Instead of paying for emergency treatment for people who can’t pay, we’ll be paying for a lifetime of treatment for people who can’t pay. You are trying to cure a cold with cancer…

Obama is quite used to lying and lying outright with a straight face. He’s been getting away with it for a very long time. It is who he is.

Indeed he managed to get himself elected as US President and we know virtually nothing about the man, including his place of birth. He did so with the help of the Mainstream Media covering up his past. As such, he stands there lying outright fully expecting to continue to completely get away with it.

Once the Media starts calling him on his lies, which we’re witnessing beginning to happen, more and more people will see that Barack Obama is in fact an unconscionable liar. And people will demand verification on more and more of what he is telling everybody.

Eventually, as more lies are uncovered, a vast majority of people (except Leftists since politics is their religion and Obama is their Saviour) will demand verification of just about every word that comes out of his mouth.

When this happens, the Left will become increasingly shrill with shouts of racism and the like, and they’ll do what Leftists do when they feel power slipping from their grasp… turn up the violence.

Sure, let’s go back to the wire hanger days.

Do any of you really think that banned abortion will result in women raising their unwanted babies?

How’s the weather back there in 1970?

Save your ranting – this is about payment. Pay attention, fund your own elective procedures.

Out: Planned Parenthood abortions.

In: Health related abortions.

No worries.

justonevictory on August 22, 2009 at 10:11 AM

Hmmm, I have to disagree with you on this one. Obama has not one but two strategies to deal with embarrassment. One is to throw an associate under the bus, as you correctly note.

But I think this particular flub, because it is so serious, deserves the second strategy. He will deny saying what he said.

Oh, you can play the audio until you’re blue in the face, and they’ll tell you you’re a birther, a nutcase. Etc.

It works for about 50% of America when Obama does this. Sad commentary to be sure.

Anyway, I suspect we’ll get the brazen denial strategy on this one.

You don’t, YOU pay for them. Drive them out like a giant cattle drive.

Keep movin’, movin’, movin’, though they’re disapprovin’, keep them illegals movin’, RAWHIDE!

Damn, that was good.
The mental images I had of Maobama frantically swinging a sword back and forth while his huge ears alternately slap him in the back of the head and then his face..his helmet askew and nearly falling off….
It was beautiful. I’m choking up..

As opposed to what?..leaving them on doorsteps?
I thought the abortions were all about necessity for the womans health? You make it sound like its a convenience thing, you’re implying their real choice is simply not wanting the baby.

Itchee Dryback on August 22, 2009 at 10:24 AM

“Once the camel gets his nose in the tent, his body will follow”
Obama only has to sell the camel’s nose, not the whole camel.

Responsibility is inconvenient isn’t it? That’s why the left is opposed to it.

Illegal aliens will continue being in this country and there is nothing anyone can do about that.

What really pisses me off is the fact that BO can stand before a camera and simply tell whatever lie Rahm instructs him to broadcast. This guy is a street chump……he has become a clown.

David in ATL on August 22, 2009 at 10:31 AM

The closest I’ve heard them come to being honest on this issue is saying that Americans will be able to buy policies that don’t cover abortion. Cold comfort for those of us who object to Federal payments for abortions delivered under the public plan.

I’d like to see this issue get more coverage.

Dee2008 on August 22, 2009 at 10:35 AM

What is the point of having a provision in any bill if there’s going to be a way around the provision? Guess who would be interpreting what “reproductive services” means if this bill passes? Hint: it’s not the health care plan participant. No one in our government has the temerity to call a spade a spade or put forth a sensible plan for anything. They will always try to please everyone instead of trying please the majority. I know a lot of good attorney’s but their brethren in government are ruining this country.

Alfresco on August 22, 2009 at 10:38 AM

“Shut up”, Obama explained.

PackerBronco on August 22, 2009 at 10:40 AM

Isn’t it just better for us to force them to pay for affordable insurance rather than giving them free insurance?

Afrolib on August 22, 2009 at 9:25 AM

If we can force them to pay, can we force them to leave? Tell me, what would be cheaper, paying for their health care or a one way ticket back to the country of origin?

Now, where is that dining room table?

PappaMac on August 22, 2009 at 10:41 AM

the man cannot tell it striaght if his life depends on it, and he actually wonders why his poll numbers are pancaking? Unreal, either he has no idea whats in the bill or jhes a bare faced liar, there is no third choice, and in either choice lies the issue, he cannot be trusted, period.

Xolom on August 22, 2009 at 10:06 AM

Go take the time and research the spike in abortion rates in the years following Roe v Wade.

The abortion crowd does not require any more incentives to murder more of the unborn, and that is just what ObamaKill will do.

ConservativeTony on August 22, 2009 at 10:43 AM

James Taranto had a good reminder. When asked by Rick Warren about the right to life before being elected, the answer was, “…it’s above my pay grade.” Last week in a surreptitious phone call with rabbis across the US he announced that “We are pardners with God in matters of life and death.”

He got a raise. It’s now Obama and god./s
