WaPo/ABC poll: Obama fading

posted at 10:12 am on August 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Even with a skewed sample, the new Washington Post/ABC News poll shows big trouble for Barack Obama.  He manages to hang onto a 57% approval rating, thanks to a 10-point gap between Democrats and Republicans in the sample, but otherwise the survey shows confidence flagging, pun intended, in Obama. This comes at a bad time for the White House, as they have two massive overhauls of the American economy on the floor of Congress — and that may be the problem:

Public confidence in President Obama’s leadership has declined sharply over the summer, amid intensifying opposition to health-care reform that threatens to undercut his attempt to enact major changes to the system, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Among all Americans, 49 percent now express confidence that Obama will make the right decisions for the country, down from 60 percent at the 100-day mark in his presidency. Forty-nine percent now say they think he will be able to spearhead significant improvements in the system, down nearly 20 percentage points from before he took office.

As challenges to Obama’s initiatives have mounted over the summer, pessimism in the nation’s direction has risen: Fifty-five percent see things as pretty seriously on the wrong track, up from 48 percent in April. …

The president’s overall approval rating stands at 57 percent, 12 points lower than its April peak, as disapproval has ticked up to 40 percent, its highest yet. On specific issues, Obama received more mixed marks. A majority, 53 percent, now disapprove of his handling of the federal budget deficit, and his ratings on health care continue to deteriorate. On the marquee issue of the economy, 52 percent approve of his actions, unchanged from June.

Let’s deal with the sample first.  The poll includes 35% Democrats, 25% Republicans, and 34% independents.  That would make sense — if Obama had won the election by 14 points.  He won it by seven, with independents and some Republicans breaking for Obama.  Here’s a hint to pollsters: if you’re tracking a bigger gap between Democrats and Republicans than we saw in the presidential election, your sample is almost certainly unrepresentative of the electorate.   At least it’s improved for WaPo/ABC, which had it at a ridiculous 13-point gap in June.

The skew explains why Obama still has a 57% approval rating in this poll when Rasmussen and Zogby have him under water and Gallup has him closing in on 50%.  Even with the skew, his disapproval numbers have risen sharply, especially on ObamaCare, which is practically all anyone discusses.  Half of the survey respondents oppose it, with 40% strongly opposed, compared to 45% approving and only 27% strongly approving.  Obama is losing the argument, and the longer it continues, the more his overall numbers will erode with it.

WaPo/ABC sees independents as the key, as should Congressional Democrats facing elections next year.  At the beginning of 2009, Obama had high ratings among independents, but no longer.  Only 41% now trust Obama’s judgment, down from 61% in January.  They disapprove of Obama’s handling of health care by 57%, almost all of whom strongly disapprove, and the same number oppose the policy itself.  Among the half of independents that say ObamaCare will affect their vote in the midterms, they swing 2-1 to saying that they will oppose candidates who backed it.

Even the skewed samples don’t hide the fact that voters have finally realized that Obama is no genius, but an inexperienced politician, a lousy doctor, and an incompetent economist.  And it’s only the seventh month of his presidency.

Spend money like a drunken sailor when the economy has tanked, and has a long climb back because domestic manufacturing has been shipped to China nearly in total, and before too long, people are going to realize that you don’t have a clue.

Obama does not have a clue. Now the people finally know it, no thanks to the MSM that pimped him to us.

People wanted a president who would take the credible and necessary steps to get the economy back on track — FIRST PRIORITY.

Instead, they got bailouts, porkulus, apologies worldwide for their own country, racial politics, cap n tax and socialized medicine shoved down their throat and a president who considers voters his enemies. If the media did their job at least halfway, his numbers would be far lower.

Hey, they do talk a good game, have fixed nada, and have refined corruption to an art form while feathering their own nests. Just look at any state/city govt.they monopolize: Detroit, Chicago, DC, LA, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans, Boston, New York, all of New England, and check out the poverty rates and crimes rates and you can see how they govern. Keep them poor, ignorant, and angry and they’ll continue voting democrat. Works every time! Why are we surprised then at the latest democrat phoney in the White House? The news media is a joke!

mjbrooks3 on August 21, 2009 at 10:28 AM

Zogby and Rasmussen sampled “likely voters”. The WP/NBC poll sampled “all adults”. You’d expect there to be a several point difference because of that:

“It is important to remember that the Rasmussen Reports job approval ratings are based upon a sample of likely voters. Some other firms base their approval ratings on samples of all adults. President Obama’s numbers are always several points higher in a poll of adults rather than likely voters. That’s because some of the President’s most enthusiastic supporters, such as young adults, are less likely to turn out to vote.

Unless you’re a Blue Dog who has come out against the bill. Then, you might still have a chance

I know it’s difficult to do, but more effort in the Blue Dog districts (and states for senators) needs to be spent in explaining that by virtue of the Blue Dog being in the democrat party, these bad policies have a much greater chance of being enacted.

I never see advertisements or campaigns explain that horrible policies – like cap and trade and this health care bill – would not see the light of day BUT FOR the dems having a majority. And not just a majority but a sizeable one.

People need to understand that while there particular Dem rep may vote “no” against such legislation, by virtue of that rep being a dem, the legislation has a much greater chance of being enacted.

The GOP needs to spend much more time and $$ in these districts branding the democrat party as the extreme liberal party that it is, and then pointing out that these Blue Dogs help empower that liberalism by adding to the majority.

Surprise. After months of unrelenting and often hysterical attacks and at the nadir of the legislative sausage-making process and an economic mess he inherited, the poll numbers are dropping. No one with any brains, certainly no one in the Obama White House, is surprised by this. Once the Blue Dogs and “moderates” in the Senate realize that their only hope is to (figuratively) kick Chuck Grassley in the teeth, pass health care and move on to other business, the numbers will begin moving in the other direction.

Approval ratings are ridiculously malleable (track any president’s over the course of their administration). One advantage that Obama has is that he’s doing the hard work up front, allowing him to coast into the mid-terms. Also, as the election approaches, it will be increasingly obvious that the R’s are intellectually, politically and morally bankrupt, and voters will choose accordingly.

Clinton (his health care plus tax increases) and Obama are easy, but there most be myriad other examples.

And then end the ad with – “why would you believe this democrat this time? If you want a moderate/conservative, vote republican”.

I think the drop is due to bad legislation pushed through too fast, including the stimulus bill and the mortgage bailout, which helps nobody.

People are now worried that the healthcare reform will be the same…all show, no help.

I have a poll that should be taken.”How many any of you that voted for Obama are sorry” I curse all of you.

First, they aren’t my friends. These are people I have daily contact with through work. Two have just left the state with their young families. Decided the great american handout wasn’t going to happen and moved where they can afford more for less. So yes, some actually belived this…

Not to put words in ppaint mouth, but possibly means declaring martial order and confiscate fire arms….
jbh45 on August 21, 2009 at 10:38 AM

You’re both correct. I am talking pedal- to -the- metal hard core ,Soviet Union style domestic actions. There’s nothing in his or his dedicated followers M.O. to suggest they would have second thoughts about implementing such actions

I know you get beat up around here a lot, but you’re growing on me. Just wanted to let you know.

BadgerHawk on August 21, 2009 at 10:48 AM

It’s just like an episode of VH1 Behind the Music about an 80s hair band: top of the charts, sex, drugs, rock & roll, and midway through the show “then it all came crashing down.”

The TOTUS shattering. That’s when he started fading. It was a sign, an omen I tell ya!

Also, as the election approaches, it will be increasingly obvious that the R’s are intellectually, politically and morally bankrupt, and voters will choose accordingly.

Bleeds Blue on August 21, 2009 at 10:41 AM

Well, yeah, but they spend less of money on stupid stuff.

BadgerHawk on August 21, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Obama loss of popularity as President a direct result of global warming.

It may have cost us $787 billion but the American people may finally have learned that big government just doesn’t perform for the price.

Sorry. I think that was a Redneck Fashion Tip from Jeff Foxworthy.

Bleeds Blue on August 21, 2009 at 10:41 AM

Morally bankrupt? Let’s talk about Chris Dodd and Teddy Kennedy making a sandwich out of a waitress. Let’s talk about Barney Frank’s boyfriend running a Gay Prostitution ring out of Frank’s basement. Let’s talk about Chris Dodd and Countrywide Mortgage. Let’s talk about this Marxist in the White House trying to partner up with the Almighty because his plans for total control are failing miserably. The Republicans are morally bankrupt? People in glass houses should not throw stones. Idjit.
