Quotes of the day

posted at 10:00 pm on August 21, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Let’s see if we can have a reasoned discussion about end-of-life counseling.

We might start by asking Sarah Palin to leave the room. I’ve got nothing against her. She’s a remarkable political talent. But there are no ‘death panels’ in the Democratic health-care bills, and to say that there are is to debase the debate

It’s surely not a death panel. But it is subtle pressure applied by society through your doctor. And when you include it in a health-care reform whose major objective is to bend the cost curve downward, you have to be a fool or a knave to deny that it’s intended to gently point the patient in a certain direction, toward the corner of the sickroom where stands a ghostly figure, scythe in hand, offering release.”

***
“I may be repeating myself on this, but Governor Palin never said that a specifically named ‘Death Panel’ existed in Obamacare. She clearly made the point that such a government entity would be the natural result of a government run, rationed health care system. In fact, ‘Death Panels’ appeared in quotations in her very first Facebook note on the subject, signifying that it was being used as a metaphor…

I just don’t understand the behavior of these so-called ‘intellectuals.’”

homesickamerican on August 22, 2009 at 2:14 AM

Oh man. That guy upset me. Brought out the “rage” in me all of a sudden. I’m sure he’ll simple attribute that to my “female emotionalism” and use it as an example of why women shouldn’t be allowed to vote…but I had to say something. I think it’s ridiculous that people would seriously think that way.

No worries, LH2O, my wife often exhibits “female emotionalism”. I have a locker full of plasters and ointments to see me through those times.

According to Obama there will be death panels, here he is in his own words just 4 months ago.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I think that there is going to have to be a conversation that is guided by doctors, scientists, ethicists. And then there is going to have to be a very difficult democratic conversation that takes place. It is very difficult to imagine the country making those decisions just through the normal political channels. And that’s part of why you have to have some independent group that can give you guidance. It’s not determinative, but I think has to be able to give you some guidance. And that’s part of what I suspect you’ll see emerging out of the various health care conversations that are taking place on the Hill right now.

Now that we know what Obama said can we all agree that he does want death panels?

Capitalist Infidel on August 22, 2009 at 2:58 AM

I have to say I’m rather disappointed in Mr Krauthammer’s attitude toward Sarah Palin. Despite all of the really excellent points about the Democrats plan for Health care reform that the former Governor has made in her Facebook posts on the subject, He decides to focus on a rhetorical flourish in her initial statement and use it as a basis to dismiss her entire argument, even though most of what she is saying lines up pretty damn closely to what he has been saying on the subject. I guess it just strikes me as being rather intellectually dishonest and only serves to lower my opinion of Mr Krauthammer who I used to have a deep admiration and respect for.

I feel this whole situation between Krauthammer and Palin is quickly developing into a daughter who can never seem to please her overbearing father. No matter what she does, it’s never good enough for him.

LiquidH2O on August 22, 2009 at 3:24 AM

Charley, I love ya’, but be sure to thank Palin for calling a spade a spade, before you called a spade a thing that looks and acts like a spade.

Yeah, okay Charles, have the only one with balls leave the room.

Why the rush to pass Obamacare before the summer recess? Well, what everyone knows now is that the main reason was because the White House & Democrat leadership wanted (Obamacare) more power & control. So they pushed hard & fast to get it thru congress. Are they aware it is not supported under the existing articles & amendments of the US constitution? They were trying for a 787 billion dollar stimulus redo except this Obamacare would set a presedent that exceeds the federal government contitutional limitations.

Obamacare itself is federally unconstitutional. It will die in the floor of the house of representatives w/out a new constitutional amendment. Obama, Reid & Pelosi need to review the 10th amendment w/ a constitutional scholar & get back to us with a new way spin out of this problem. Health care itself qualifies as a commodity or as a “good[s]” such as something that is bought, sold or traded on an open & free market. Food, water & shelter are commodities as well & are sometimes regulated but they are not a right under the US constitution. Hence, health care is not a right. Health care can be regulated but it can not legislated by the federal government. It falls under the resposibilty of the individual States constitutions. These types of issues are described & defined by and under the 10th amendment of the US constitution. If a constitutional convention is called for today perhaps this health care issue can be addressed someday down the road by a new constitutional amendment. The problem is that it takes awhile to convene something like a constitutonal convention. So let’s get into a robust debate about the fact that this national health care, as the US constitution reads today, cannot be legislated, passed or signed into a law. Obamacare as it stands now is an act of futility.

Now where’s the button to play the Laura Ingraham ‘but monkey’ sound for Chuck?

- The Cat

P.S. Krauthammer has the same problem that The Monster (:P) does. They know to much about too many things and they get caught up in semantical type things.

I think though in this case I believe that Charles didn’t actually read the post. It’s like he can’t be bothered with her small townitude.

P.P.S.

We might start by asking Sarah Palin to leave the room. I’ve got nothing against her. She’s a remarkable political talent. But there are no “death panels” in the Democratic health-care bills, and to say that there are is to debase the debate.

BTW, that’s very weaselish.

You’re a liar! Not that there’s anything wrong with that. You’re awesome, really. But YOU LIED you lying liarhead.

P.P.P.S. No, I know you(Krauthammer) didn’t actually call her a lying liarhead. . .

MirCat on August 22, 2009 at 5:29 AM

I thought Krauthammer was finally seeing the light. I like the man, I respect his intellect, but I guess he’s just too much of a Beltway insider to see what the rest of the country sees so clearly.

MainelyRight on August 22, 2009 at 6:16 AM

Sarah Palin did her Facebook on “death panels” two weeks ago. Why did Dr. K write about this today? It was last week’s issue.

INC on August 21, 2009 at 10:25 PM

Absolutely correct. This week issue is now on: “Legal/Tort Reform”

kifesosi on August 22, 2009 at 6:46 AM

It took me a long time to read this thread. The one obvious point to me is that Gov. Palin likes and respects the American people. Politicians and the punditry treat the public as a means to an end and don’t even have the grace to hide that they find us quite icky.

Cindy Munford on August 22, 2009 at 6:55 AM

I pulled an all-nighter playing LOTRO, and came back here to HA and I am just so LOL.

Krauthammer reminds me so much of my Dad. He is still registered a Democrat even though he read Buckley and is more conservative these days.

Chuck and my Dad are alike in that they do NOT like surprises. They are so out-of-touch and OLD.

You know, they are old crusty guys that just are acting like old crusty guys.

I’m sure Sarah looks at Chuck and sees her Dad Chuck Heath in him. Never able to make him happy.

Hilarious. I’m sure the Cuda laughs at CK when he does stuff like this.

Sapwolf on August 22, 2009 at 7:01 AM

Oh Chuck, there you go again.

Sapwolf on August 22, 2009 at 7:03 AM

CK is like those old crusty English guys in the movies who are set in their ways.

Commander McBrag: “Oh, that reminds me of my days running a lemonade stand in the Congo Basin”.

Sapwolf on August 22, 2009 at 7:08 AM

They’ve seen the opposition in action, and they’re passionate in their unabashed enthusiasm for Sarah Palin. They set up their site when they felt this site was too ineffectual in defending a libertarian conservative, if not even biased.

alliebobbitt on August 21, 2009 at 10:22 PM
But we don’t have to tear down any and every conservative who criticizes Sarah Palin, certainly not in an ad hominem way.

ddrintn on August 21, 2009 at 10:26 PM

Sorry – C4P is a streetfighting site with no connection to Palin at all. Its bloggers will defend her against critics but always carefully discriminates between someone like Dr K who questions her politics and others who demean her as a person. The first group will be criticised in a respectful way, the second group will garrotted, knifed and ripped apart unmercifully…think British SAS.
C4P posters on the comments, however, are a little wilder and untamed although there are lines drawn that if crossed will be nuked.
In short there is plenty of scope for supporters of Romney or Paul to comment on Palin threads here at HA or to go to their own websites to voice their opinions of Palin. But only an idiot would go to the Manchester United Supporters website and not expect to be roasted alive for praing Liverpool…

callingallcomets on August 22, 2009 at 7:31 AM

Why does everyone seem to think so highly of krauthammer. I don’t think he’s an especially good writer. His articles seem 6 months behind the times, and many times his conclusions seem, well, kind of dull.

sherryande on August 22, 2009 at 8:33 AM

But there are no ‘death panels’ in the Democratic health-care bills, and to say that there are is to debase the debate…

We have a communist trained and mentored community organizer who hides or erases all documentation of his past in the White House and this guy is worried about “debasing the debate”?

There is no reason to debate anything. His plans are obvious and we’re the target, not the beneficiary.

I’m so tired of these pundits who still believe Republicans need to maintain civility and “debate”.

Clueless … get the hell out of Washington for a while.

darwin on August 22, 2009 at 8:46 AM

CK’s comment is truly out of order. He might not like Sarah, but his comment doesn’t make any sense nor does it sound like something he would write.
Why after 2 weeks is he just now saying this. Hell, I am old too and probably CK’s age, but I can recognize and understand what she means. CK was a shrink and has faced death himself. Why can’t he understand that if you do have a little chat about this with your doctor that it shouldn’t be government inspired and paid for.
I guess he is having a difficult time realizing that Romney care didn’t work and any government health care has not delivered anything but misery and early death. Government anything is not good nor is it sustainable.
On Friday we got word that the VA’s Death Book is back in play after George Bush said NO to it. Sorry, CK, you are really wrong on this one.

BetseyRoss on August 22, 2009 at 10:14 AM

When it becomes obvious that columnists and pundits are too enamored with themselves, I stop reading/listening to them. This deprives me of nothing because there are many brilliant, perceptive thinkers out there who will fill the void left by an arrogant star collapsing in on itself.

So in essence you’re saying that Chuck is just a beltway toadie. atheling on August 22, 2009 at 1:14 AM

Pretty much.
That, coupled with the phsyiologic and psychiatric facts that his college dive into a waterless pool may account for a re-emerging secondary mania in his aging Carter-Mondale molded brain. Of course its hard to tease out the affects of the guilt he suffers from, for having had his father ‘put down’, despite the elder Krauthammer’s living will.
Freudian slip?
Perhap’s his bizzare behavior toward Palin is simply a projection wherin Charles has transferred his guilt for removing his father’s life-support, to Sarah’s objections to white-coated “death panels” calling the shots for her father. How else to explain his convoluted writing on the subject — ie. if we ruleout Krauthammer as ‘being in the tank’ for Middle-Road-Mitt for our working diagnosis?
