Poll: Obama 47, Huckabee 44
posted at 3:35 pm on August 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
That’s within the margin of error, kids, the first time Huck’s been that close despite consistently leading the GOP field in PPP’s polling on hypothetical match-ups with The One. They’ve posted extensive crosstabs for him, Mitt, Gingrich, and Palin; among the most striking numbers is Huck scoring a 61 percent favorability rating among conservatives versus just 49 percent for Romney. Mitt’s never going to shake the RINO label, is he?
He’s not the big loser in this poll, though.
Huckabee is not the most popular candidate among GOP voters though. While 66% of them have a favorable opinion of him, 72% have a favorable opinion of Sarah Palin.
Palin’s overall numbers have seen a pretty steep decline in the last month though. Two July surveys we conducted actually showed her numbers slightly improving from pre-resignation announcement levels, to a 47/45 spread. That’s now dropped to 40/49. Among Democrats she’s gone from 25% with a favorable opinion of her to 15%, and among independents she’s gone from 45% to 37%.
In her head to head contest with Obama, Palin is down 52-38 after her 51-43 deficit a month ago had been the closest we have measured for her to date.
Until this, the trendline in her favorables was upward. I don’t know how to explain PPP finding that she’s nosedived since late July, unless all the media screeching about her “death panels” comment is resonating with the public — which would be strange, given that public support for ObamaCare has been sinking steadily ever since she said it.
A revealing piece of data:

Huckabee rates positively with every educational group; Mitt is narrowly in the negative among college grads but otherwise positive for every group from high school grads on up. Palin’s numbers, by contrast, track steadily downward starting with high-school grads, where she has overwhelming support, up through grad-school grads, where she’s overwhelmingly opposed. I don’t know how to explain that, unless the media image of her as a know-nothing has stuck and this is a snapshot of how different groups react to it. And if it is, I don’t know how she begins to undo it. Exit question: Does mounting conservative disgust with Obama make Huckabee more viable as a nominee? Every time I post on him, the Huck-haters in the comments vow that they’ll stay home, won’t donate to the campaign, etc etc etc, but after three more years of Hopenchange I’m thinking you’ll be at the point where we could nominate Meghan McCain and you’d all be out knocking on doors. Second look at Huck?

If Huckabee or Romney had had the lies, slander and “false witness” thrown at them and their families that Palin had, they wouldn’t even be on the chart!
Now private citizen Sarah is starting to make her voice heard (shooting at the Dems like wolves from a helicopter) and her shots are making an impact — more than Huckabee or Romney can say.

Huck? I don’t think so. Me thinks who ever is taking these polls is trying to pull a McCain on us, meaning they are trying to pick the candidate for us that has the least chance of winning

Huckabee….Palin….
We have GOT to do better than those two.
Granted, both are “likeable” people, but I wouldn’t want to see either of them as the GOP nominee in 2012. I’d still like to see Boehner get it, but if not, I certainly hope there’s a new rising star emerges as a possible front-runner.
At least, Obama and the Dems will have alienated the vast majority of voters by then, and an empty paper bag would win against The One.

As a Libertarian, AP, which would you rather have: Huck or Romney? Please no “none of the above”, honest question.
LastRick on August 20, 2009 at 3:47 PM
Allah…
Please look at the sampling sizes in the poll, esp the number of college and post college grads and compare that to the last PPP poll run and that will explain why Palin’s numbers are down.
As for Huck, the reason for the result is simple FOX TELEVISION SHOW where he comes across as Mr Nice Guy. Do a little digging and you’ll see he’s not all he’s cracked up to be.
It still puzzles me tho, how with a crumbling PAC and ZERO support in the blogosphere how a TV show can give that good of numbers.
If he’s the nominee in 2012 I will have to drag myself kicking and screaming to the polls.

I think this says more for how badly Obama is faring. Huckabee is way down the list of GOP nominees for most conservatives, and he’s perceived as a religious nut by a lot of people on the far left. Yet here he is within the margin of error against The One.
As for Palin, bottom line is she’s gonna have to sell herself to the electorate. Her unfavorables are high, but it’s not something she can’t overcome. Look at how unpopular Hillary was a year and a half ago, yet her tough primary fight against Obama endeared her to even some of her harshest critics on the right. Hell, I have friends and family who despised that woman, yet couldn’t help but be impressed that she hung in there til the very end(we still think she’s a nasty, opportunistic shrew however).
Doughboy on August 20, 2009 at 3:50 PM
I think part of the drop in Palin’s numbers has to to with the fact that apart her facebook posts and the media attention that they garner she has pretty much been keeping a fairly low public profile since she resigned. Conversely Huckabee has his own TV show and as a result is constantly in the public eye. As for Mitt to tell you the truth the guy seems to have dropped right of the radar lately, which might have something to do with the fact that its health care that’s the hot button issue at the moment.

Approval among Republicans is the only thing that matters at this point, and Palin has the highest approval rating among Republicans of any of these candidates.

So the election will essentially be 2008 all over again because we let polling pick our candidate? Great!!!
deidre on August 20, 2009 at 3:54 PM
The media has successfully painted Palin as a mental lightweight. A long, drawn out Republican primary helps her immensely (assuming they’re wrong, of course). To win the nomination under such circumstances, she will have to face down Huckabee, Romney, et al. in several debates. If she can come out of those debates and show that she’s not a mental lightweight, her numbers among independents will skyrocket.
The general election numbers are worthless right now. The only numbers that matter are the primary ones.
