Oh my: Obama down to 45% approval in new Zogby poll

posted at 9:00 pm on August 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

I remember back in the day when “Zogby” used to be a curse word among conservative bloggers. Change:

Asked whether they approve or disapprove of the president’s job performance, just 45.3 percent of likely voters say they approve. That compares with 50.5 percent who disapprove of the job Obama is doing.

The results are a strong indication that contentious national debate over healthcare reform has taken a major toll on the president’s popularity…

Of greatest concern to Obama may well be his decline among all-important independent voters. Just 37.5 percent of self-identified independents say they approve of how Obama is handling the presidency. That compares with 59.2 percent of independents who disapprove…

Continued evidence of declining popularity there will ratchet up the pressure on congressional blue dogs and other conservative Democrats to go their own way on controversial proposals such as public-option healthcare and energy cap-and-trade, knowing they can’t rely on presidential coattails to prop them up with voters.

Quite so, which is why any righty blogger with any kind of audience should be trumpeting Obama’s declining numbers. The lower they go, the more pressure there is on Blue Dogs to kill the bill. Make sure they know it.

Dude, The One’s first term is now … totally wee-wee’d.

Well on this post at least I can hit the rack in peace.
It has been one rough day.

red131 on August 20, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Off topic, why can’t conservatives compromise on anything?

Because your idea of “compromise” is “do what progressives say or we’ll call you racist”.

We all know there has to be some government involved in a critical program like health care.We already compromised by giving up the single payer.

First of all, you haven’t given up single payer. Barney Frank admitted on camera that this “public option” is the best way to the goal of single payer. Another liberal Congresswoman cheered on the destruction of the insurance industry as the result of a public option.

Second, government is involved in enough crap. Government got involved in the mortgage industry (Fannie/Freddie/CRA) and we got an economic collapse.

Why don’t you just give us our public option and you guys add all your fluffy interstate and tort reform rules to the existing plan.

Afrolib on August 20, 2009 at 9:20 PM

For starters, the public option is a trojan horse — again, as admitted by your leaders — for a single-payer system.

Second, your side won’t allow serious tort reform. Congressional Democrats have received far too much money from trial lawyers for that to happen.

Finally, you don’t need our help. You have an overwhelming majority in both the Senate and House. If you want to be angry with someone, look towards your fellow Democrats.

amerpundit on August 20, 2009 at 9:28 PM

Bob Beckel suggested offering tort reform, but do you really think the Democrats would even think about that?
NoDonkey on August 20, 2009 at 9:24 PM

First, tort reform is not on the table so long as Democrats control the debate.

Secondly, Beckel is a tool. He became super religious right after GWB won in 2004 and it appeared that social conservatives were a voting group. More recently, Beckel has been in the forefront of unquestioned Obama love. He is a professional leech.

No. Have you seen how much money they received from trial lawyers? If they want to keep the cash flow going, they won’t allow serious tort reform. And Democrats want to keep the cash flow coming.

There is something wrong here, Rassmuson has bamster at 50% and the lib zogby at 45% approval. I will take it, though I doubt he will ever go below 35% approval.

farright on August 20, 2009 at 9:13 PM

As was mentioned above, the party identification explains the difference. He’s flying high with Dems but lower than whale crap with Republicans and Independents.

His numbers with the Republicans aren’t ever going to get significantly better.

His numbers with the Independents COULD get better, but losing his aura of being a “new” kind of politician and reaching across the aisle kills a lot of those chances.

His remaining numbers depend on the Dems’ happiness with him. I figure that black people will be high on him for the most part, so that’s a safe 12-15% for him. The rest of the Dems, though, could start jumping ship if they see him either abandoning the policies they want and/or they see him screwing up the chance of a lifetime.

If he totally screws the pooch with ObamaCare, he’ll start bleeding Dems until he can find a way to get them back on his side.

teke184 on August 20, 2009 at 9:30 PM

First, tort reform is not on the table so long as Democrats control the debate.

Oh I so agree. But Afrolib apparently thinks it is.

Secondly, Beckel is a tool.

I’m on board with that as well, but he’s the only one remotely connected to the Democrat Party who I’ve heard mention offering tort reform.

Keep in mind that Rasmussen is a 3 deay moving average. The last days poll is averaged against the 1st 2, thus moderating for anomalies, But tends to understate a radical shift. So if is Ras is at 48% and Zog is 45% these3 #’s almost corroborate each other, besides both are within the usual 3pt margin of error.

Food for thought.

Because it’s a horrible poll.

First of all, take a look at the bottom:

SurveyUSA data collection for this project was underwritten by MoveOn.org

Second, it was a measure of “1,200 USA adults”. In other words, it includes people who’ve never voted and will never vote. It may also include illegal aliens and convicted felons.

Finally, I don’t see a party ID breakdown. Did they survey 1,199 Democrats and one Republican?

People who may think my word “evil” is over the top needn’t look any further than this simple stimulus spending fact. Zogby does not use random sampling. He uses pre-weighted block sampling, based on what he thinks the racial/religious/ethnic/political breakdown of a sample should be. So, when he gets the proportions right—when his gut, or whatever he uses to determine this (he has never released a full statement on his methodology), is correct—he is the best pollster out there. When he’s wrong, he’s really wrong. It’s a cool methodology (and useful for things were the proportions never change) but it is very high risk/high reward type system. This does allow him to capture real changes as they occur, but it also leads to general inconsistencies. Also, his personal bias can matter more than with other pollsters.

HILLARY OR ANOTHER WOMAN WILL BE EITHER AT THE TOP OR VEEP IN 2012…BET ON IT

Reason?
Two Words….Sarah Palin.

If Palin runs (not a guarantee) and get the nomination (not a guarantee) then the Dems MUST pick a woman. If BHO tanks even worse (hey cut some slack, he’s only 6 months into his term and he’s still got many more crisis not to waste) then the Superdelegates could give it to HRH HRC. They also might be grooming Claire McCaskill or Hillebrand from NY for the VEEP Dem slot….maybe even Blanche Lincoln from the South (Palin stronghold).

Any one else have an opinion on this?

PappyD61 on August 20, 2009 at 10:02 PM

I guess the world has come to an end now that conservatives are now referencing the zogby poll.

Off topic, why can’t conservatives compromise on anything? We all know there has to be some government involved in a critical program like health care.We already compromised by giving up the single payer.

Why don’t you just give us our public option and you guys add all your fluffy interstate and tort reform rules to the existing plan.

Afrolib on August 20, 2009 at 9:20 PM

We used to love Zogby back in the 90’s – he was nearly dead on in 1994. I don’t know what happened lately and that disastrous reversed poll.

No dude, there doesn’t. We have already compromised with medicare and SCHIP (and HMOs) in the “critical” program of health care. You want *more* compromise? Nice try at incrementalism there. Won’t work.

Oh, and your side hasn’t yet given up single payer, so you won’t get a single inch from us.

But I’d be amenable to your side allowing tort reform (as if) and interstate access, and give you the “public option” as long as it wasn’t perpetually subsidized by tax dollars and had to compete with private insurance and other non-profit health care companies (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) evenly – that means no determining what plan “qualifies” to compete with the public plan and no tax penalties for not using the public plan.

Not only do we get the filthy liar talking about state seizure of healthcare but we also get to hear about his opinions on police matters in Cambridge, MA and other such things that should be so beneath his office.

President Wee-Wee.

The Snoop Dog Dems would go ballistic.

Think Rodney King riots during the entire election cycle. Ye gods.

atheling on August 20, 2009 at 10:09 PM

All I can do is LOL.

The american people are waking up to this obamination and it is a lovely sight to behold.

marmaran on August 20, 2009 at 10:10 PM

Off topic, why can’t conservatives compromise on anything?

Afrolib on August 20, 2009 at 9:20 PM

Excuse me, but our country is about to fall deep into the arms of a committed socialist because conservatives have compromised on virtually everything. It’s the damn democrats that never compromise.

The only way the sickness of progressivism advances is when we give up our principles and don’t stick to our guns.

No more compromise.

darwin on August 20, 2009 at 10:12 PM

and he will forever be known as Wee-Wee Obama. lol

I did. I voted for McCain. He lost.

Give a lib a hand, they’ll ask for the whole arm. :P It’s about time we start just giving them the finger. :D

Tuari on August 20, 2009 at 10:15 PM

The best part is, every independent that wakes up to the nightmare of Obama is another person who will likely not watch MSNBC.

What’s MSNBC??

TampaBayBull on August 20, 2009 at 10:16 PM

Bad news – it’s Zogby Interactive, the untrustworthy self-selected poll.

Good news (at least for us) – the trend is not Obama’s friend.

Because we are the party of KNOW.

And what will most likely be B.O.’s reaction to the fact that his poll numbers are now starting to get lower with each passing day?

Answer: Time to get Michelle out there wearing something fashionable!

pilamaye on August 20, 2009 at 10:20 PM

He’s cooling off faster than the Earth!

What was Bush’s lowest number? I want Uhhhhbama to be that minus one. THEN I’ll be happy.

darwin-t on August 20, 2009 at 10:20 PM

OT:

In the headlines, there’s a story by Michael Yon, “Do Americans Care about British Soldiers?”.
It was so moving that it brought tears to my eyes.

It should go viral.

atheling on August 20, 2009 at 10:21 PM

Post Turtle: “This plan will expand coverage to every American (and Mexican) while dramatically decreasing costs. I can’t explain any specifics or how gov’t is suddenly going to be efficient. You’ll have to settle for utopian generalities beaming from my teleprompter.”

Obama: “cable chatter”

We’re back to hearing discourse on the Right described by Obama as “chatter” again.

Whoa, what’s with those dark circles in this clip under the Bamster’s eyes? My grandmother used to get like that when she drank. Now, of course I’m not sayin’ he’s drinking–I’m just saying what my grandma used to do.

Parading Warf around? Yuck that’s not going to help him at all.

metric on August 20, 2009 at 10:26 PM

Remember, Bush didn’t have the media cheerleading him like Obama does. Think what his numbers would be like if the drive bys weren’t propping him up.

atheling on August 20, 2009 at 9:31 PM

More accurate?

atheling on August 20, 2009 at 10:09 PM

Sadly I believe this may happen anyway, just a nasty feeling.

thomasaur on August 20, 2009 at 10:28 PM

Conservatives didn’t use to have such scorn for Zogby. He was the most accurate of all the polls in both ‘96 and ‘00. What turned us off was his exit polling on Election Day in 2004 that showed a Kerry landslide victory. To his credit, he apologized on his website for the inaccuracy. If he says that Bambi has a 45% approval rating then who am I to argue?
