Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on August 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama went into unchartered territory yesterday: NASCAR.  He graciously welcomed last year’s NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson to the White House, but managed to blow the history of the racing circuit:

You know, it’s fitting that you’ve all come here to the White House — the American people’s house — because NASCAR is a uniquely American sport.  Since its humble beginnings, when moonshiners raced on the sands of Daytona Beach during prohibition, it’s grown into a sport with tens of millions of fans here in America and around the world.

There’s no doubt that NASCAR has its roots in the moonshine business, but Daytona Beach isn’t where they raced.  Daytona Beach was home to speed trials between 1902 and the early 1930s, when those trials moved to the Bonneville Salt Flats to avoid the winds at Daytona.  The first stock car race at Daytona Beach didn’t take place until 1936, three years after the repeal of Prohibition.  Big Bill France put together the first race at Daytona Beach, and eleven years later in 1947 founded NASCAR. (h/t HA reader Benderball)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Obama ought to get himself an “Americana” czar.

Ed,

NASCAR did start on Daytona beach during prohibition and we have always been at war with Eastasia.

but i think it might be cool to go to the actual race

and get the headset to listen in

If you ever once go to Talladega you’ll be hooked. It happened to me in 1980.

backwoods conservative on August 20, 2009 at 8:47 AM

If Barry watched the History Channel he’d know he was incorrect. Billy Ray Cyrus voiced over a nice history of moonshiners and Applachia in general.

Exactly, he is so out of touch with American traditions. He looked like a fool at the baseball game. He throws like a girl.

How much would you pay to see this putz show up at a NASCAR race in mom jeans?

TXUS on August 20, 2009 at 8:30 AM

I’d pay more not to see ever again Michelle Obama in those shorts she wore to the Grand Canyon.

highhopes on August 20, 2009 at 8:49 AM

Totally, if you actually GO to a race you will have a different perspective. TV is nice, but you really can’t tell how fast they are going. Go to a 1 1/2 mile race, sit on the front stretch. You’ll be amazed at how fast they come off of turn 2 and go into turn 3 on that first lap.

And when they start racin side by side, you just know one of them is going to wreck because neither wants to give.

It is wholesome entertainment and an allstar race every week.

ThackerAgency on August 20, 2009 at 8:49 AM

That is exactly this man’s problem. I was with some friends recently and we were discussing this perception problem he has. If you look at him objectively this man is alien to being an American. That’s why there is so much suspicion of him, he doesn’t share our experiences or traditions.

I’m sounding the clarion call for a NASCAR Czar immediately. The cars go too fast. The fans drink too much beer. They’re mostly conservatives. We can save on health care if the drivers stop getting hurt. In fact, let’s just eliminate (or tax) the South and anything we might think is fun. After all, we talk funny and most of us still believe in the Constitution–and we can’t have that!

Crusader Rabbit on August 20, 2009 at 10:11 AM

I don’t know much about NASCAR but I don’t pretend to. When it comes to pretending to be something you aren’t, it’s better not to try at all, than to try and fail. It’s a lesson our Pretender in Chief hasn’t learned yet.

At least this one is relatively minor. You know, recent history (like this century) is often harder to document than ancient history.

It’s apparent that they did research, just as usual when they do, they do a poor job of it. Where are the adults?

You don’t expect him to know anything about American History do you? After all, he spent all of his youth living around the world. Just because NASCAR is the biggest sport in the country and was founded 52 years ago, you won’t expect him to know anything about it. Apparently the TOTUS didn’t do enough research on this one. Or maybe the liberal nencompoops who work at the White House haven’t been out of Chicago or Washington, to fly-over country in the last 52 years.

Oh please. Ryan Newman couldn’t get around Pocono Raceway without a map, a gps and a guide book. :D

Besides, Mark Martin is the greatest driver still on the track today. Even those rabid Junior Zombies (who are alot like the 0bamabots) know it deep down.

Jimmie Johnson? What about Jeff Gordon for those San Fransisco NASCAR fans.

Jeff from WI on August 20, 2009 at 9:18 AM

I think Kyle Bush is more to their temperament. Jeff Gordon is a family man now.

Wolftech on August 20, 2009 at 1:36 PM

Don’t know much about NASCAR history.

Don’t know much about history
Don’t know much about economy
Don’t know much about math books
Don’t know why I get dirty looks
But I do know that I love me
Me and TOTUS are the way it should be
And when I am crowned king of the world
What a wonderful world it will be.

Speaking of moonshine… where is mine? I like to get dog drunk and repeat over and over, “If Obammy says it then I believe it.” You think it’s the phrase that’s gives me the pounding in my head next day? Yea, prob’ly.

We’re here to catch all of Obama’s idiotic remarks. Imagine the things he said in his classroom???
