MSNBC on race-baiting gun segment: Um, we were speaking “generally”
posted at 4:10 pm on August 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Er, yes. That was precisely the problem. So lame that it barely qualifies as spin:
Following the shot of the African American man focusing specifically on the gun, MSNBC host Contessa Brewer said that “you have a man of color in the presidency and white people showing up with guns strapped to their waists or to their legs.”…
[B]y raising the racial issue in this context, bloggers claimed that MSNBC was purposely misleading viewers by not showing that at least one African-American man has also carried a gun to an event.
An MSNBC spokesperson responded to POLITICO: “Contessa was speaking generally and not about that specific person with the automatic weapon.”
Indeed she was, even though the presence at the rally of that specific person — which was withheld from MSNBC viewers — undercut her general thesis that the gun display was motivated by racial paranoia rather than libertarian principle. This is really just an extreme version of the media “forgetting” to mention who’s really responsible for those Obama/Hitler signs at town halls. The sin in that case is one of omission in order to further the “Republican mob” narrative; in this case, they went a step further and actually trimmed the video to support their race-war storyline. And the best defense MSNBC can offer for it is a Larger Truth/fake-but-accurate non-answer. It’s one thing when the media doesn’t report things that should be reported, but when they’re actually doctoring facts to better tailor them to their ideological agenda? I don’t know where we go from here.
Update: Oh my:
On behalf of the nearly half million members of Americans for Limited Government — and tens of millions of other equally appalled Americans of all races nationwide — I hereby demand the immediate termination of Contessa Brewer, Toure, Dylan Ratigan and any and all others involved in any way with the fraudulent “news” that ran in the 10:45AM segment of your August 18 broadcast.
You network has besmirched the dignity and honor of American people. You have endangered the life of the President of the United States. You have purposely fanned racial tensions. And you have deliberately lied to your own audience.
Update (Ed): I agree with ALG on this one. We complain about Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, but they engage in opinion journalism, so we expect to get wild arguments and leg tingles. What they don’t do is deliberately distort source material in a manner this blatantly dishonest in order to artificially inflame racial tensions. Opinion journalism is legitimate; this is nothing but propaganda.
MS-NBC should fire everyone involved in this deception, in front of the camera and behind it. It has a decision to make as to whether it is a news and opinion channel, or a propaganda outlet for the Left. There is a difference, and this segment crossed it.
Update (Ed): My friend Tommy Christopher says that our silence on the allegation that a conservative talk-show host “put him up” to carrying the gun makes us the equal of MS-NBC on this point. I strongly disagree. The man made up his own mind to carry the weapon to the town-hall forum, and his motivation was rather obviously not race. The entire point of the Brewer segment was that the guns were an explicit representation of racism in America as a significant part of the opposition to Obama, an argument which the uncut footage would have rendered ridiculous. This is about MS-NBC lying about their footage to make a point that simply isn’t true; how does the talk-show host have anything to do with that? It’s a red herring.

GREAT! I like that approach! So now I can say what I want about who I want and just say that I was speaking “generally!” I love it!

That’s not the point at all. MSNBC shouldn’t be faking evidence that ObamaCare opponents are racist gun-toters.
As to bringing guns to political rallies – it may not be a good idea politically but it is legal. If the newsmedia were to really examine why people are bringing guns to rallies they’d probably find out it’s because these people are asserting that they in fact do have rights the government is not supposed to infringe upon and they are making a symbolic stand for those rights as they see ObamaCare as a threat to some of their personal liberties.

It’d be totally paranoid to carry a gun to a university in Virginia. Totally paranoid to carry a gun to a gym. Totally paranoid to carry one anywhere but a firing range, really.
Until the one time it’s not, and a lot of people die because nobody could stop the psycho who DID bring a gun.
The “creeps who should be sedated” are those bound and determined to take power away from the people who obey the law and give it to those who do not. The “creeps who should be sedated” are those who place such overwhelming faith in government whenever their political party is in power that they could never see a need to rise against it with force of arms.
It’s time for you to rethink some assumptions about humanity.

I fully expect more like this to come from msnbc. When they get away with it the other left wing stations, abc, cbs, etc will follow them down that road that ends in them being the official state media. Then the truth will never be seen from them, and any opposing media (media telling the truth) will be yanked off the air.
This is very fitting with the fascists that hold the power now, obama, pelosi, reid, emmanuel, assholerod, frank, dodd, the list is disgustingly long.
Our government DOES need a purge, and if it doesn’t get that purge I fully expect that more than half this country will begin refusing to be RULED by this government, then the chaos begins.
I’m beginning to think this is what obama wanted in the first place. Thanks obamazombie voters!

I have never heard of ANY State with a “carry” law for fully auto. Fully auto is only for collectors (lots of federal permits, fees and restrictions) and “select” LEO’s for duty only.
You can apply and get a permit for a fully functional 155mm Howitzer, but there are a few restrictions. I haven’t read them all, but I doubt if it would be OK to bring it to a protest with the President in the State, much less across the street.

A mass-termination would be just what the doctor ordered. This is a terrible act, and one of the most blatant examples of the intentional spreading of black propaganda. This is agitprop, plain-and-simple. Selective editing should be sufficient provocation to have the FCC review the entirety of MSNBC’s broadcast content. However, considering we have an FCC that’s more worried about disguising the “Fairness” Doctrine under the guise of ‘local content programming’, that’s just not going to happen. I know that.

My liberal friend spews the same nonsense. Ms. Matthews is (allegedly) MSNBC’s answer to fair & balanced. Joke.
On the other hand, I’m not an advocate of flashing heat at a Presidential rally, primarily because it opens the door for this kind of nonsense and takes the focus of the primary issue at hand: This steaming pile of Health Care refuse heading down the line.
I understand framing the argument in the greater context of governmental overreach and stripping of our rights. That’s one tactic, but if it ultimately detracts from the big issue of the day, it doesn’t seem like a good one.
If the legislation on the table was the repeal of the 2nd amendment, gun toting would certainly be an appropriate display of protest.

It would be one thing if they showed the entire original picture. That just makes the story wrong and makes them look stupid. Deliberately cropping the picture is altering the evidence that doesn’t support your claim.
In a court of law, this is known by various terms, depending on how egregious it is, a) contempt of court, b) perjury, and c) obstruction of justice.
Note that all three terms are accompanied by time spent in jail.

I believe it was Nightline or Dateline or some kind of line, and you beat me to it. They put an explosive charge under a Ford truck to show that in some accidents that make and model of truck could explode.
When confronted with the deception, the “anchorman” very huffilly gave a non-apology apology saying in essence, “I’m a prtty-boy who just reads this stuff, I didn’t know the event was faked, but it COULD have happened, so why the big deal?”
That preceeded Dan Rather’s fake letters but possibly real story by several years.

It’s surprising because it’s such blatant fraud that can be proved as fraudulent so easily. You can argue all day about news MS-NBC chooses to report or chooses to omit. You can argue all day about biased opinions.
But when they start editing videos to hide the fact that the gun-toter is black – there’s no way to obfuscate or defend that practice.

And “hate groups are on the rise eh? Given how your buddies in the DHS are defining extremism these days and the declining popularity of President WeeWee, I can see why you’d say that.
TheUnrepentantGeek on August 20, 2009 at 5:00 PM
Not a racist, a moron. You’re deliberately distorting what I said because you like playing the victim and the race cards at the same time. It’s pathetic when Al Sharpton does it and it’s marginally more pathetic when you do it.
I understand that the overwhelming majority of gun-totin’ white folks — including a few friends — are not interested in shooting the president, whether they like him or not.
However, for all the progress America has made, there are not few dangerous lunatics out there and it is impossible to be a thinking person without wondering if one of them wants to take a shot at our President. And when wackos show up armed to an Obama rally, makes those fears into a legitimate news story. It would have been be an issue if a bunch of hairy leftists had showed up at a Bush rally.
Maybe you should go cling for a few minutes until you calm down.

No. We’re discussing this here because conservatives will use any distraction to divert attention from the idea that their policies wrecked our economy and their lies are blocking health care reform. Also, since you’re understandably nervous about the obvious racism in SOME sections of the anti-Obama movement, you take the offensive in order to deligitimaze legitimate observations. Like the fact that a bunch of white folks bringing weapons to an Obama event is unnerving and news.

“Generally speaking”, I have no doubt there were quite a few men who were neatly dressed in a white shirt, black tie and gray slacks, who also happened to be sporting an assault rifle and a pistol. Also, it probably makes for much better television to show just the trigger and clip portion of the rifle versus, say, the entire imposing weapon.
This would be akin to a GE refrigerator ad showing only the icemaker.
