MSNBC on race-baiting gun segment: Um, we were speaking “generally”

posted at 4:10 pm on August 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

Er, yes. That was precisely the problem. So lame that it barely qualifies as spin:

Following the shot of the African American man focusing specifically on the gun, MSNBC host Contessa Brewer said that “you have a man of color in the presidency and white people showing up with guns strapped to their waists or to their legs.”…

[B]y raising the racial issue in this context, bloggers claimed that MSNBC was purposely misleading viewers by not showing that at least one African-American man has also carried a gun to an event.

An MSNBC spokesperson responded to POLITICO: “Contessa was speaking generally and not about that specific person with the automatic weapon.”

Indeed she was, even though the presence at the rally of that specific person — which was withheld from MSNBC viewers — undercut her general thesis that the gun display was motivated by racial paranoia rather than libertarian principle. This is really just an extreme version of the media “forgetting” to mention who’s really responsible for those Obama/Hitler signs at town halls. The sin in that case is one of omission in order to further the “Republican mob” narrative; in this case, they went a step further and actually trimmed the video to support their race-war storyline. And the best defense MSNBC can offer for it is a Larger Truth/fake-but-accurate non-answer. It’s one thing when the media doesn’t report things that should be reported, but when they’re actually doctoring facts to better tailor them to their ideological agenda? I don’t know where we go from here.

Update: Oh my:

On behalf of the nearly half million members of Americans for Limited Government — and tens of millions of other equally appalled Americans of all races nationwide — I hereby demand the immediate termination of Contessa Brewer, Toure, Dylan Ratigan and any and all others involved in any way with the fraudulent “news” that ran in the 10:45AM segment of your August 18 broadcast.

You network has besmirched the dignity and honor of American people. You have endangered the life of the President of the United States. You have purposely fanned racial tensions. And you have deliberately lied to your own audience.

Update (Ed): I agree with ALG on this one.  We complain about Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, but they engage in opinion journalism, so we expect to get wild arguments and leg tingles.  What they don’t do is deliberately distort source material in a manner this blatantly dishonest in order to artificially inflame racial tensions.  Opinion journalism is legitimate; this is nothing but propaganda.

MS-NBC should fire everyone involved in this deception, in front of the camera and behind it.  It has a decision to make as to whether it is a news and opinion channel, or a propaganda outlet for the Left.  There is a difference, and this segment crossed it.

Update (Ed): My friend Tommy Christopher says that our silence on the allegation that a conservative talk-show host “put him up” to carrying the gun makes us the equal of MS-NBC on this point.  I strongly disagree.  The man made up his own mind to carry the weapon to the town-hall forum, and his motivation was rather obviously not race.  The entire point of the Brewer segment was that the guns were an explicit representation of racism in America as a significant part of the opposition to Obama, an argument which the uncut footage would have rendered ridiculous.  This is about MS-NBC lying about their footage to make a point that simply isn’t true; how does the talk-show host have anything to do with that?  It’s a red herring.

Years ago the common racist thought was that black men couldn’t control their sexual urges and, therefore, white women weren’t safe around them or they would be ravaged.

Now, the common racist thought is that white people are so unhinged that they can’t control their racist urges and, therefore, black people are not safe around them or they’ll be lynched/shot/savaged/etc.

It’s sad that people that can so readily see the ridiculousness of the first racist trope will buy the second set of racist garbage hook, line and sinker.

The people at MSNBC are fanatics. I think that, in a more ordered society, a society where all one must do is seek the direction and approval of the State, their actions would lead to mass persecution of those who don’t agree with them.

When one is capable of such deception, and one is a Statist, one is capable of anything.

They are fanatics, waiting to be told what to do. This is the foundation for every atrocity of the past.

Fight it … There is a story among soldiers in Afghanistan – that a platoon got pinned down by a solitary Tally. It seems Tally was firing some dangerous shots with some kind of weapon – and he was far enough way with it that the soldiers couldn’t hit him with their puny .223′s.

A Helo had to be called in to take the Tally out – which they did. Turns out it was an old Tally dude with a .308 Enfield – bolt action.

That story makes me smile!

HondaV65 on August 20, 2009 at 4:25 PM

Liberals must decieve and manipulate the public in order to gain support because if the truth were made plain, they would have no support.

Liberals divide people into groups of race, age, gender, class, wealth, ethnicity, etc, and then pit one group against its counterpart. The left looks for racial disparities and then amplifies them. If no racial disparities are found, they will invent them. Liberals are the true racists.

It is worse to falsely accuse someone of racism than it is to be a true racist. False acuisations lead to people losing their jobs, careers, businesses and credibility. They can also be targeted for violent retribution as a result of false acuisations. Just like making false accusations of rape or child molestation, the stigma will be with you for a lifetime.

If we have laws against hate, we should also have laws against the false accusation of hate. Those reporters should not only be fired, they should be locked up!

Hmmmm…. this actualy brings up a very interesting legal question.

The Press has been granted specific freedoms under the Constitution. It is generaly very difficult to bring legal action against any “Press”… much harder than it is against a normal citizen.

The Founders made it that way in order for the Press to help be the Peoples watchdog against the Government.

However, Political groups are governed by different standards… especialy in the area of funding…

So, what is the line? When does a Press Agency cross into blatant Partisanship for a candidate or party, and thus LOOSE their Constituional Press protection?

But my comment is based on the caliber of his weapon, not the color of his skin.

I want Contessa Brewer and Chris Matthews to get mugged, so they can think long and hard about the “bear” part of the Second Amendment.

MadisonConservative on August 20, 2009 at 4:32 PM

What did they do. They presented a true fact — white people with guns — and ran the wrong picture cropped the picture to fit their lie. Is MSNBC’s suggestion slander that there’s a little racist tension in the air any worse than Glenn Beck’s now-famous tirade truth-telling? I think not at all, evah. In fact, I’m pretty sure that there’s a lot more likelihood that the white guys with guns don’t like having a black president than there is that Barak Obama hates white culture, because I’ve interviewed all white guys and found them all to be racists. You should send your resume to MSNBC.

I’m being serious here… I’m not even sure if I get MSNBC on my TV – I’ve never really looked for it… I don’t think so though.

Yessir. And don’t forget the Viet Cong using 70 year old Mosin Nagants against us! You can buy those for $80 today.

Sorry, but I’d like to keep my shoulder unbroken. :P

The only people that keep watching are righties trying to say, “Hey! See, we told you the MSM is biased!”

Upstater85 on August 20, 2009 at 4:28 PM

Hey

Like we discussed before:

On one hand, the right mocks the MSM for their waning influence, i.e. drop in newspaper circulation, stock value, and viewership on television.

On the other hand, we whine about the bias of them.

Yes, it’s ridiculous, but I’ve come to realize that non-entities can be as biased as they want — they aren’t altering the political landscape much.

Beck, like Hannity and Rush, is a commentator. He does not claim to be a newsperson. Newspeople are supposedly Broadcast journalists. Journaists are supposed to be objective reporters of current event. Not subjective
Liberal messengers in alliance with the Democratic Party. Try again.

Wasn’t Brewer the one that had the “Oxford Style” errr debate?

I saw something on youtube…

True Fact?

They represented this group as RACIAL… when they are not, they are Libertarians.

So how is that a TRUE FACT?

Reapeating a lie, does not make it true…
