Unreal: MSNBC edits clip of man with gun at Obama rally to support racism narrative

posted at 7:42 pm on August 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

I missed this yesterday at Newsbusters but Treacher, rightly aghast, tipped me to it this afternoon. Never will you see a starker example of MSNBC getting away with the sort of deception for which Fox News would be pilloried, especially in the context of race. If you missed Monday’s post about this, go watch the footage (or look at this photo) and see if you can deduce why they wouldn’t want to show the guy with the rifle from the neck up during this particular segment. For all the well-deserved heat that MSNBC’s primetime line-up has taken for its demagoguery — Maddow has been notably egregious during the health-care blowup — this proves that they’re not above pulling this crap during their daytime “hard news” segments either.

When you’re done with the clip, scroll through the new photo gallery Zombie’s put together of the many, many, many “Kill Bush” signs at leftist protests over the past eight years. Thank goodness outlets like MSNBC and the Huffington Post took such “blunt, no-argument stances” against that sort of insanity at the time.

I enjoyed a cartoon called Kappa Mikey. One episode the characters in the cartoon were at risk of being exposed as frauds. The character Guana panicked and said something like,

“Oh no! If we’re exposed as frauds, I’ll never be able to work again in any field except journalism!”

Daggett on August 19, 2009 at 10:34 PM

This supposed link to between widespread revulsion at Ubama`s socialist healthcare plan and racism is like barnacles on the barnacles. Crud on crud on crud and so on to infinity. Like two mirrors facing one another. If you object to Ubama in any fashion now you are insane or a racist or both. Crude tactics and thuggery galore. I wish these lying media dodos were the crew on my British Ship of the Line in the 18th century. I`d have the scurvy lot hanging from the yardarm to see their final dance. Whoops! I guess I just proved how angry I am! I forgot!! Being angry is supposed to be bad too according to illiberals. It makes them ever so NERVOUS. I would go see a counselor about my anger but they are all illiberals too and would probably put me on something quite . . . uh . . . strong.
Probably wouldn`t be strong enough, tho. Is there such a thing as a conservative counselor? Anyway I am running out the guns. Got the ports open for some ripple fire. Watch out for the splinters!! Now there`s a good crew. All the bad eggs have been tossed overboard! Not that I wish our failed congress to be thrown overboard in 2010.Heavens no!
I have digressed once again.
Back to the point.
I don`t care what color our president is. But the media sure does. People are angry against a black president cuz he is black? NO! They are angry cuz he is a dunce and he is bad for this country. Besides, the truth is that Ubama is as much white as he is black. And I don`t give a fart either way about it. As far as I am concerned he is a sOcialist jOker and LOL on that one. Why so Socialist?
Rant concluded.

“The keyword here is blackwhite. Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in Newspeak as doublethink. Doublethink is basically the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”

Not sure that I agree with you here- if 95% of the people bringing guns to Obama events are white, is the story actually biased?

This goes beyond incredulous. While I viewed the segment all I could say was wow, wow, wow. I couldn’t believe that an entire news network could be so blatantly hypocritical and such outright liars. Not that I would expect much else than that from MSNBC but this was simply…. what? Over the top doesn’t begin to describe it.

The people at MSNBC are simply liars. Nothing more, nothing less. Just liars.

As the man at Senator Specter’s town hall said, someday they will stand before God. Even, perhaps, that someday may not be after death but while alive and in their own minds and hearts. They will have to answers to THEMSELVES. What will they say that justifies these lies?

They are damned even onto their own judgment of their own lives. God, forgive them.

MSNBC your a disgrace to this country and racist. Why in your mind are only white people racist in this country. This is racist in itself and shows your hatred for America. I do not dislike Obama for his skin color, but for what he is doing to my country. Only you on the left have always pointed out race. From you starting the KKK to keep black people down to now using the government to do that. Your racism sickens me.

Trenaway El daryl on August 19, 2009 at 11:31 PM

It’s a shame that MSNBC feels that their role is to become a leftwing version of Fox. Their viewership among the left would rise if they simply did investigative journalism. I honstly believe that the only thing MSNBC thinks is important about the current moment is the racial element to anti-Obama sentiment, like conservatives wouldn’t be freaking out over ANY Dem who proposed healthcare. And especially since both of the other Dem nominees proposed MORE leftwing versions of healthcare. Are there some racists out there, yes. But the opposition (however kooky) is more about philosophical differences. If you’re gonna be leftwing Fox why not belittle their positions, not lie about them being KKK members. Oy….

Also, it’s creepy enough that anyone would bring an assault rifle to or near an event with the President.

CrankyIndependent on August 19, 2009 at 11:36 PM

Look, I agree that bringing any gun to a presidential appearance is a bad idea and a glaring example of “just because you technically can doesn’t mean you should.

But this in no way excuses, explains or diminishes the crassly dishonest manipulation engaged in by the so-called “news” commentators on MSNBC.

They cropped a gun-toting black guy to deliberately hide the fact that he was black so they could tut-tut over gun-toting white guys and advance and illustrate the notion that racist whites were out to get Obama, or somesuch, even though the “evidence” they presented would’ve directly contradicted that notion had it been presented in totality without selective editing.

There’s individual bad judgment (bringing gun to rally) and intentional institutional mendacity (the NBC News organization actively conspiring to misrepresent a public event) and there’s no way that the former justifies the latter.

I don’t know if excusing or minimizing MSNBC’s actions was the intention of your post but I just want to make it clear that nothing the original gun-toter did, however ill-advised, warranted their response.

Gilda on August 20, 2009 at 12:40 AM

Frumian is completely wrong about Nazis and socialism. If he thinks that the fact that they had the word “socialists” in their full title does not necessarily mean they had an element of socialism, then all I can say is wow.

Perhaps George Reisman can explain it to him more clearly.

http://mises.org/story/1937

The argument that they couldn’t have possibly been socialists because they fought against other socialists is equally as stupid. The concept that there are opposing groups of power hungry socialists is so difficult to understand?

Comparing the Obama administration to Nazis may be a little over the top, but the smear is certainly more appropriate in the case of Obama than it ever was with Bush. Leftists tend to use the word “fascist” as an all-purpose insult toward anyone who disagrees with them or any authority which thwarts their whims. It’s used by the left in the same spirit as a teenage kid calling his parents fascists because they won’t let him stay out late.

The most important aspect of fascism, indeed of any political ideology, is economic. The economic system of a government or regime is intimately linked to the level of freedom afforded to its citizens, capitalism being another word for “freedom” and all forms of collectivism being another word for “state slavery.” The economic system of fascism, in which the government creates the illusion of private ownership while to all intents and purposes dictating how private property is disposed of, has a lot in common with the economic agenda of Obama. Under fascism, the means of production stays in private hands but the state dictates what is produced, in what quantity, at what times, at what price and at what cost of labor. The Democrats are quite obviously trying to seize control of as much private business as possible. They’re openly talking about dictating wages and bonuses (and not just limiting this to companies that received bail out funds) and have ordered the health insurance companies to turn over all of their records regarding wages and bonuses etc.

This really IS of a fascist nature and the term is quite appropriate, if strong.

Sharke on August 20, 2009 at 12:45 AM

It seems like these leftists really want Obama to get shot and killed so he can become the next JKF, to be remembered as a martyr instead of as like Jimmy Carter, a total failure.

There was a time in this country when TV producers got fired for twisiting the truth and deceiving audiences with an editing sleight of hand. Remember when Dateline rigged the pickup truck with explosives to show “what could happen” from the dangers presented by the vehicles gas tanks? If memory serves me right, the executive producer and several of his minions bit the dust, and rightfully so, when the deception was uncovered. The fact that a black man/african amercian was toting the AR-15 was undoubtedly known to the three hacks that expressed outrage over this seemingly dangerous “white supremacist.” and if they didn’t know then, they surely know now, and should be issuing an apology to the half-dozen or so viewers that tuned in to their lousy show.

jarhead05 on August 19, 2009 at 11:21 PM

Exactly! So, when are we going to stop doing nothing but complaining on blogs? Seriously, folks, the MSM is only getting worse every day with thier blatant lies, smears, bias and manufactured “news.” I think it is time we all organized to do something – we can start by filing complaints with the FCC – sure, nothing will be done, but someone will notice if a few million of us file official complaints about this crap every day. Protest the stations that carry them, and write letters to the cable companies like Time-Warner, Comcast and Cox letting them know of the daily lies, bias and smears. Letters to the editors of your local papers can be seen by hundreds. How about we all write sponsors just like the leftoids, and here’s something – maybe someone’s a lawyer and can address this – how about a class action suit against every one of these cable channels for libel, slander, defamation, or whatever. These people must be stopped!

Interesting that he brought up Hinkley;

From Jeffrey Lord at the American Spectator:

Charles Guiteau, who shot James Garfield, is known to history as the “disappointed office seeker” — which is to say a guy who didn’t get a job he felt owed. The others — John Wilkes Booth (Lincoln) was furious at the “tyrant” Lincoln for his military victory over the Democratic Party’s backbone, the slaveholding aristocracy. Leon Czolgosz, McKinley’s assailant, was a fervent socialist and anarchist. JFK’s Lee Harvey Oswald was famously a would-be defector to the Soviet Union and an ardent fan of Castro. Other would-be shooters include Giuseppe Zangara, who managed to kill the Mayor of Chicago when he was riding in a car with FDR. Said the furious assassin at his trial:” “I have the gun in my hand. I kill kings and presidents first and next all capitalists.” Likewise was the attempt to kill Truman done by left-leaning Puerto Rican nationalists, two attempts against Ford by radicalized women, and the attempt on Reagan done to impress the left-leaning actress Jodie Foster.

In other words, violence like this has historically been driven by leftists. That said, it is little short of crazy to be blaming this kind of thing on anyone other than those who do the violence.

You can read the whole article here

alohapundit on August 20, 2009 at 4:14 AM

P.S. In a letter Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) wrote to a fellow segregationist, Senator T. Bilbo, Byrd stated thus, “I shall never fight in the armed forces with a negro by my side….Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

TerryMoney on August 20, 2009 at 7:20 AM

Showing the race of the man would point out the lie: armed citizens of all colors can have a civil disagreement and NOT resort to violence. There is no intimidation level in doing so as it is an exercise in civil rights. When civil rights are used in a civil fashion, then there is no alarm. Our ability to use reason and restraint of ourselves is of prime benefit to our society, and those that posit that the mere act of owning or carrying a weapon of any sort is a potential threat have no wish of civil discourse: they wish to intimidate you into disarming by their fears of you.

From that the great ‘racial divide’ does not erupt when a black man brings a firearm with him. If he needs that safety for himself, then saying he must be disarmed is an act of oppression against him. Getting racial harmony finally requires that we destigmatize the ability of the common man to defend himself so as to be a citizen…. not a subject. If the Left would spend half as much time decrying a black man who was beaten by Union Purple Shirted thugs as they do handguns and long arms, there might be some credibility to their arguments… as it is not showing that in our society you can be of any race and BE armed as a citizen is NOT a threat to civil discourse flies in the face of dogma. And like any religion, dogma trumps common sense and requires twisting events to fit a narrative… it requires you to lie to yourself and others when reality doesn’t fit what you believe.

The Nazi government ran every aspect of the citizens lives, including healthcare. They took over corporations and installed Nazi party CEOs. They nationalized banks and factories. In fact, their government takeover of every part of life in Germany got them many admirers here in the States such as Joe Kennedy. Once people and the press could no longer pretend what was happening in the camps wasn’t happening, then they started to complain about them, but before that, there was much admiration for what Hitler did for Germany – from the left – much the same as the communists are now trying to distance themselves from Mao and Stalin by saying they really didn’t practice communism. How Orwellian.
