Tapper: Blue Dogs not barking for health-care reform
posted at 2:45 pm on August 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
A funny thing happened on the way home to Blue Dog Democrats. Many of them had voiced enthusiasm for overhauling the American health-care system while on Capitol Hill. After getting a blast of constituent anger at yet another big-government, big-spending program, though, ABC’s Jake Tapper reports that their enthusiasm has diminished considerably:
But despite efforts by Congressional leaders and the White House to make the legislation more palatable to them — by, perhaps, eliminating, the public health care option, or imposing more Medicare cuts — many of these members of Congress have sounded more skeptical of the bill as of late, according to local media reports.
Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., at a town hall meeting in Moss Point Monday night, said, per the Associated Press, “I would hope that everyone in this room knows by now that I am not going to vote for the health care plan.”
Says Rep. Jim Marshall, D-Ga., according to the Gwinnett Daily Post, “As the bill stands right now, I would have to vote ‘no’ until we get a better handle on the costs. I am adamantly opposed to throwing more money at the current system.”
During a town hall teleconference Tuesday night, Rep. Travis Childers, D-Miss., said “he would not vote for a House health care reform bill in its current form,” a Memphis TV station reports.
Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Louisiana, said “it’s appearing more likely that he’ll break with his party and oppose President Barack Obama’s controversial health-care plan should it come to a vote on the House floor,” reports Houma Today.
Tapper lists several others at least hinting at opposing the plan in the House, including:
- Walt Minnick (ID)
- Heath Shuler (NC)
- Leonard Boswell (IA)
- Dan Boren (OK)
- Bobby Bright (AL)
However, unless all 52 Blue Dogs vote as a bloc to oppose the House bill, it will likely pass. The real action will be in the Senate, where the Democrats have made clear that they don’t have the votes to get past a filibuster, and in conference if anything ever does pass the Senate.
Jim Tanner (D-TN) probably speaks for many in the BDC when he advises an incremental approach. Noting that people do want some of the problems in the current delivery system addressed, such as the difficulty of insuring with pre-existing conditions, Tanner says that Congress should take a much more deliberative approach. “[W]e’ve got some holes in the current delivery system that are resulting in inefficiency, duplication, nonproductive … provider-to-patient expenditures, and what I’ve been telling people is we need to figure that out before we start overturning the entire system.”
ObamaCare advocates routinely point to polling showing support for health-care reform, but this is the difference between that impulse and the rush to ObamaCare. Tanner and more than a few Republicans want to take a systematic, analytical approach to see what works and what doesn’t in our current system, so that we can reform the latter while protecting the former. Instead, the White House and Democratic leadership in Congress wants to rush through a proposal that no one has read, few understand, and one that almost literally throws the baby out with the bathwater in a mad rush to get a vote. Their rejection of deliberation and reason exposes their motivations as something other than reforming a system that satisfies an overwhelming majority of Americans, and it’s not unfair to ask why they want to reject the deliberative and analytical approach. Hopefully, more Blue Dogs will learn that new trick.

Just so long as they’re not humping Obama’s leg.
I have some hope for Minnick. He came up with a very modest alternative for Porkulus that cost only a fraction of the cost of the original, and of course…Piglosi would have non of it.
Laura in Maryland on August 19, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Boren (D-OK) was pretty adamant at his town halls that he would vote no on the current House Bill, would not vote for any bill with a public option, and would not vote for any bill that would raise taxes. Of course, the crowd might have torn him limb from limb if he had said anything else, there were quite a few people at his meetings, from what I saw on the news, and the vast majority were opposed to Obamacare. We’ll see.

Wait a minute………..are you saying America cannot trust The Messiah? But he has so many references: Rezko, Rev. Wright, Bill “the Bomber” Ayers, Michelle “I am only Proud of America if my black husband can profit from it somehow…”, and of course Nancy “San Fran-Sis-co” P., Hairlip Reed, and Rahm “I hate Israel and only use the F-word when speaking to ….well everybody…” Emmanuel. Gee…..with those references, what’s not to like – and of course there’s The Messiah’s Auntie who is on her 5th Felony Warrant for Deportation – she was there in Kenya when The Messiah was born …….or was it Nigeria? Or Russia…………..some damn Fascist place anyway…

C’mon Blue Dogs, try proposing one or more of the following incremental approaches:
- Individuals can deduct preium costs and HSA contributions.
- Sales of policies across state lines.
- Tort reform.

Ed, you’re falling for it again.
Now that Obama has finished demonizing the gop as obstructionist extremists he is now going to do the requiste positioning of the ‘blue dogs’ as the needed check on liberal power.
Wash rinse repeat. And here we get people cheering for these perversions instead of demanding the gop step up, reign in the extremists, and produce real alternatives. Not boilerplate cut taxes and regulation white papers that have their titles changed to reflect the issue of the day.

You can count on Rep. Charlie Melancon voting no on this … he’s a snake in the grass.
Fool voted FOR the Shamulous – but now he’s considering a run for Senate against Vitter. So he’s going to vote “no” to position himself for that run.
It won’t work – people in Louisiana are getting fed up with Democrats but quick. Not only will Meloncon lose his race against Vitter – his congressional seat is about to go blue.
Expect to see him with a cushy fall back job in the Obama administration once he’s unemployed.

Here’s the thing. If corporations are just constituents and, as someone noted in another thread, the business of America is business, why is it so hard for anyone in the MSM to report on these basic facts. Why is there shame about who finances campaigns and no curiousity about how that effects politicians’ positions?

discredited boy-god?
Hardly. Maybe the extremists who yell loudest about Obama hating America have decided they don’t like what they hear from Moderates like Frum, but that doesn’t for a second mean he, or his ideas have been discredited.
Part of the problem with people like you is that you need to have your opinions validated constantly and those who make you question your positions must be purged from the debate.
Frum isn’t awol on the healthcare debate. Far from it. He is on cnn everyday making rational arguments against reform.
Thinking that Sarah Palin is hurting the GOP is a popular opinion within the party so I don’t think that idea has been discredited.
Thinking that using Nazi references is offensive and counterproductive is also a popular idea within the gop.
So despite the spittle inducing rants against those that dare suggest a different course than the loudest most extreme, these people have been proven right time and time again. Often to the consternation of the fringe.

No matter how these blue tick hounds vote on this, they need to be gone! My America has incrementally changed for years and it’s because of the compromises with these tick infested blue hounds. The changes have been subtle and the masses have hardly cared because the economy was cranked, jobs abundant (so many that the rest of the world came here to do them and we “incrementally” allowed it to happen). The next change doesn’t need to be incremental, but radically back to the right. I’ve had it with the libs, lying, and leacherous behavior. Am I pissed? Yes, I am. Tea party, hell, how about a cowboys and indians with the Congress as the indians. My fingers are bleeding I’m pounding so hard on the keyboard.

In short we are telling Obumer the same thing we told Bush about immigration. You go shut down the border, and stop employers from hiring illegals, and stop them stealing ID’s from hard working Americans. Show us you are serious and then we will talk about doing something for the millions already here. WE ARE STILL WAITING!
Obumbler told us he was going to go through every bill line by line. He would go through every government department and look for duplications and waste and get rid of it. He would rid medicare and medicade of the fraud and waste in it. Instead he has appointed his duplicitus czars in an effort to bypass congressional approvals and congressional authority paying them who knows how much, AND their whole staffs. He let the porkulus bill go with it’s 9000 earmarks. Etc. we all know the story.
If he had only done what he said he would we might be saying when we see all of the money you have saved us by cutting waste, we might be willing to spend more to supply health care.
Instead he is trying to force a government takeover on us, like Gordon Geco taking over a ripe company. He thinks that his name calling, and Chicago thug temperment is somehow going to buy him something. What he fails to realize is that we live in the REAL WORLD every day! We are used to thugs, and bullies. We are not insulated like Prof. Gates and him in a perfectly PC environment. We struggle to make it in a harsh world all of the time. So his tactics are doing nothing to pursuade, they only make us more determined to do exactly the oposite of what they want us to do.
Any married woman can tell you how that works. If you TELL your husband to do something, he will ignore you. If you ask in a reasonable tone of voice and be nice, you will get what you want.
In law classes they teach you to apply the “reasonable man” theory. What would a reasonable man do? Maybe that is why Oblama never really practised law. He must not have understood that part.
patriotparty1 on August 19, 2009 at 3:28 PM
People being energized enough to state their opinions are not extremist. This is a good liberal talking point used to deflect the fact that they are the ones for years who yelled for the assassination of Bush/Cheney and Republicans in general.
These are hard working Americans that do not want their country turned upside down into a socialist welfare state.
In case you missed it, it is the democrats that are getting arrested for beating up black men in the streets while they yell ni$$r,beat up women in wheel chairs, smack and punch people in these town hall meetings.
I would like to see Frum call the democrats out for their unbelievable hypocrisy and extremism instead of whining about how mean the GOP is at town hall meetings.

Blue Dog, Yellow Dog, Sky-Blue-Pink Dog, the common element is that these dogs are first and foremost Democrats. Their party motto remains, “If you want to get along, Go Along!”
In the world of politics where it is said that, “Two Weeks Are a Lifetime,” don’t forget that we’re 15 months from the first chance to change the balance of power in Washington. Though it now looks like the Democrats are losing support , that can change as quickly as tomorrow’s headlines. Now is not the time to do an end-zone dance.

The BDs usually vote the “wrong” way (according to the Dem Party) about 20% of the time… that gives them a few issues and enough cover to pretend they are “conservative” Democrats at election time… but in light of liberal Republicans… they have truly liberal voting records. They should have taken a week or so off, done a few townhalls, but behind the scenes, those in both houses should have united behind a counterproposal that would make Obamacare look absurd.
Reform, yes. More government, hell no. Address the portability and pre-existing condition problems. Then, offer the market solutions to help drive premiums down. Voters understand the benefits of competition. Voters also hate plaintiffs lawyers, so start screaming about tort reform.
Be the party of personal responsibility to contrast with Obama’s unserious pipedream proposals.

Hey misslizzi, I actually got a reply last week to my email to Murphy. Wasn’t bad, a lot of hemming and hawing about “principles” he will insist on before he will vote for it (like Henry Waxman even knows who the hell he is, probably thinks he is an intern every time he sees him). Would not get specific about the public option though. The thing is, we all know in the end he’ll just do whatever Nancy tells him. I think he already killed himself voting for cap-and-trade, so he might as well double down on health care so at least the nutroots will keep supporting him.

They’re conservative Dems who call themselves blue dogs either (1) because they’re being choked “blue” in the face by the liberal wing of their party, or (2) they’ve been left out in the cold and dogs turn blue under those circumstances. Also, your claim that the mainstream media ignores all corporate/politics collusion is a bit unfounded. I seem to remember hearing much ado about Halliburton, Bush’s oil “buddies”, etc over the last 8 years or so.

Help! I can’t take it any more. For those of you who use the term “reigns of power”, the spelling should be “reins”, as in horse reins. Also, when you “loose” something, this should be spelled “lose”. This is common on every web site.

WOW! That 1% of nearly 41 Million doesn’t even show up on the histogram! Oh, but these are government employees … Maybe automobile manufacturing labor contributions are different!
