Obama to rabbis on health care: “We are God’s partners in matters of life and death”

posted at 6:10 pm on August 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Mmmmmm, that’s some tasty religious pandering. Just what Dr. AP ordered!

President Barack Obama needs some outside help pushing health care reform, and he’s turning to rabbis to get it.

In a morning conference call with about 1000 rabbis from across the nation, Obama asked for aid: “I am going to need your help in accomplishing necessary reform,” the President told the group, according to Rabbi Jack Moline, who tweeted his way through the phoner.

“We are God’s partners in matters of life and death,” Obama went on to say, according to Moline’s real-time stream.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a believer be so presumptuous as to say we’re “partners” with God on the ultimate question, let alone one who’s pushing a government program that’s got people worried about “death panels,” but oh well. Water off an atheist’s back, baby. In fact, partnership’s actually a nice conceptual framework for The One’s position on abortion: God’s the junior partner and we’re the senior partners, and sometimes the senior partner has to exercise his/her veto.

Theological question: If God’s onboard with ObamaCare, what sort of terrible wrath is America risking by tanking the Democrats’ numbers ever since they started talking about it? New from Pew:

The One’s approval rating in the same poll: Just above the water line at 51 percent, which is exactly where it is in Gallup and Rasmussen today, too. That’s 10 points below where he was just two months ago. Exit question: Second look at faith-based politics for the left? (Yes!)

Obama wasn’t just speaking to a random group of 1,000 rabbis today. He was speaking to rabbis who are members of Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism.

Ok, well I might not be walking out after all. I’m conservative.

He bows to saudi royalty, covers up a symbol representing Jesus at Georgetown, claims America is NOT a Christian nation and is now God’s partner in life and death matters. I weep for this man’s two little girls – their minds, their precious, beautiful minds, are going to be so warped.

If an ordinary citizen went about seriously proclaiming himself to be God’s partner, we would consider having him committed to a mental institution for observation.

Dee2008 on August 19, 2009 at 7:19 PM

Dawn Johnsen {Obama nominee]is an outspoken proponent of Roe v. Wade and an advocate for access to abortion without limitations such as 24-hour waiting periods, parental-consent requirements for minors, and laws against so-called “partial-birth” abortion. These stances reflect the Reform Movement’s longtime commitment to a women’s reproductive health and rights.

From the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism’s webpage. On matters of life and death, Obama was preaching to the choir, so to speak, with this conference call.

Found it.

The following is the full translated text of the great prayer, “U’Netaneh Tokef,” attributed to Rabbi Amnon of Mainz, as related to Rabbi Klonimus ben Meshullam

THE ARK BEING OPEN:

Congregation and chazzan:

So now, the Kedushah prayer shall ascend to You, for You, our God, are King.

Congregation and chazzan:

Let us now relate the power of this day’s holiness, for it is awesome and frightening. On it Your Kingship will be exalted; Your throne will be firmed with kindness and You will sit upon it in truth. It is true that You alone are the One Who judges, proves, knows, and bears witness; Who writes and seats, (counts and calculates); Who remembers all that was forgotten. You will open the Book of Chronicles – it will read itself, and everyone’s signature is in it. The great shofar will be sounded and a still, thin sound will be heard. Angels will hasten, a trembling and terror will seize them – and they will say, ‘Behold, it is the Day of Judgment, to muster the heavenly host for judgment!’- for they cannot be vindicated in Your eyes in judgment.

Chazzan:

All mankind will pass before You like members of the flock. Like a shepherd pasturing his flock, making sheep pass under his staff, so shall You cause to pass, count, calculate, and consider the soul of all the living; and You shall apportion the fixed needs of all Your creatures and inscribe their verdict.

Congregation then chazzan [in some congregations this is recited only by the chazzan]:

On Rosh Hashanah will be inscribed and on Yom Kippur will be sealed how many will pass from the earth and how many will be created; who will live and who will die; who will die at his predestined time and who before his time; who by water and who by fire, who by sword, who by beast, who by famine, who by thirst, who by storm, who by plague, who by strangulation, and who by stoning. Who will rest and who will wander, who will live in harmony and who will be harried, who will enjoy tranquillity and who will suffer, who will be impoverished and who will be enriched, who will be degraded and who will be exalted.

Congregation aloud, then chazzan:

But REPENTANCE, PRAYER and CHARITY

Remove the Evil of the Decree!

Congregation and chazzan:

For Your Name signifies Your praise: hard to anger and easy to appease, for You do not wish the death of one deserving death, but that he repent from his way and live. Until the day of his death You await him; if he repents You will accept him immediately.

Chazzan:

It is true that You are their Creator and You know their inclination, for they are flesh and blood. A man’s origin is from dust and his destiny is back to dust, at risk of his life he earns his bread; he is likened to a broken shard, withering grass, a fading flower, a passing shade, a dissipating cloud, a blowing wind, flying dust, and a fleeting dream.

Congregation aloud, then chazzan:

But You are the King, the Living and Enduring G-d.

THE ARK IS CLOSED

Congregation then chazzan:

There is no set span to Your years and there is no end to the length of Your days. It is impossible to estimate the angelic chariots of Your glory and to elucidate Your Name’s inscrutability. Your Name is worthy of You and You are worthy of Your Name, and You have included Your Name in our name.

Theological question: If God’s onboard with ObamaCare, what sort of terrible wrath is America risking by tanking the Democrats’ numbers ever since they started talking about it?

God ISN’T onboard with Obamacare. It is a direct contradiction of His principle of Stewardship. Maybe someone should remind those Rabbis what God said would happen if they chose a King as their ruler rather than God. They wanted to be like every other country and have a King. Now they want to be like every other country and have Gov’t run healthcare.

liberal4eva on August 19, 2009 at 7:59 PM

While Kupat Cholim does provide adequate medical care for most of the Israeli population, people who can afford it buy supplemental health insurance so they can see a doctor when they need one. It should be noted that dental care is not covered under Israel’s national health insurance, so dentists make a better living than MDs. Also, plenty of Israelis come to the US for advanced medical care – though Israeli hospitals are still the best in the region. But then so do plenty of Canadians.

I live 20 minutes from Ontario and while I know Canadians who live and work in the US, I don’t know of any Americans who have moved to Canada to take advantage of “free” medical care.

Remember, too, that Israel was a socialist country for the first 30 years of statehood. The national health plan didn’t replace an existing free market as would be done here. Kupat Cholim has existed as long as there’s been a state.

Also keep in mind there for decades now, there has been more competition among the Israeli health funds. They are subsidized heavily by the government but they are independent and fight among each other for new members.

Also keep in mind that the standard of living in Israel is much lower than in the US. So the needs for a social medical system here is more urgent. Obamacare could work out when everybody’s monthly paycheck and the COL in the US drops all the way down to where Israel’s is.

It’s a concept (by faith, supported and defined in Scripture, both Old and New Testament) OF THE SPIRIT OF THE ANTICHRIST, meaning, it’s (antichrist) the manifestation of evil, can be via many willing fools, not isolated in merely one giant being at one giant time, but appears wherever/whenever there are willing, available vessels for such.

In other words, as Christ directed, ‘from the madman into the herd of swine…’ and “out of the leper (and the crippled man)”.

Christ says we fight against “principalities and powers.”

Lourdes on August 20, 2009 at 8:19 AM

Obama should be very careful about claiming to be in “partnership” with God. If his proclamations get much stronger, he may end up like Herod Agrippa in Acts 12:20-25:

Herod Agrippa went to Caesarea, and the inhabitants of Tyre and Sidon wanted him to sue for peace. When he addressed the people in the stadium, they cried that his was “the voice of a god, not a man.” (Historian Josephus reports the same thing.) However, the angel of the Lord was not impressed by his self-apotheosis, and smacked him down. Herod, the account says, died “eaten of worms.”

Watch out, Herod Obama, or you’ll be rising above your raising, too.

As I pointed out on Tabitha’s blog, the idea that we are partners with God IS a Christian concept; however, there are two problems. 1) Obama has by his own words proven himself to NOT be a Christian, and thus has no claim to partnership with God. 2) The only person who should decide when someone lives or dies is THAT PERSON.

neonpachyderm on August 20, 2009 at 12:04 PM

OK, this is starting to make some sense now. Obama’s idea of “partnership” with God is getting equal billing. THAT’s sacrilege.

I love the way Kenneth Copeland [and save the WOF debate for a non-political site] states this. “God is in business. Call it ‘God and Sons’. He’s God; we’re the sons.” Equal billing? No. Partners? yes.

neonpachyderm on August 20, 2009 at 12:09 PM

God does not have “Partners!”

God is God.

He has Servants.

enoughalready on August 19, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Actually, that’s not entirely true. John 1:12 says that we have been given the ability to become SONS of God, and Romans 8:14 says that “as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

Galatians 4:7 says that we are no longer servants, but sons.

Of course, Obama was talking to Jews, not Christians. The Old Testament picture is very much the idea that we are God’s servants.

neonpachyderm on August 20, 2009 at 12:17 PM

What did you expect him to say? “I am God’s shadow on Earth”? That would make him far too junior a partner.

I’m just surprised he didn’t say “God is our aide.”

This from a man, no less, who mocks the religious and goes to church to support the contempt he has for this religious country.

I wonder if OlbysMessiah’s “we’re partners with God” statement will make international headlines the way John “Nikolai” Lennon’s statement about “the Beatles being more popular than Jesus” did way back when. The furor lasted for weeks, and was worldwide. The first big difference of course is how this is, or is not, being covered by mainstream media. Offsetting this to a small degree is the internet, but it is not a difference-maker.

I’m still trying to figure which element of the filthy liar’s (thanks, highhopes!) makeup is more pronounced, his arrogance or his presumptuousness.

Jewish theology actually does say humans are partners with God, but Obama should blush for trying to politicize a complicated theological concept. I doubt that went over too well with any but the most “social justice” type rabbis, who are a minority. Most clergy understand that they need to be approachable to all their congregants and that spiritual inquiry cannot be reduced to party politics.

This reminds me of my old middle-class suburban generic liberal congregation which fired a rabbi partly because so many of his sermons pushed his own liberal political positions, which most of the congregation agreed with, but not in the form of being lectured at in shul on Shabbat, every other week. I think we were typical.

Obama in his typical arrogant fashion appropriates a prayer which addresses the age-old theological issue of “Why do good things happen to bad people?” It has generated discussion and sermonizing for centuries. He’s clumsily using it in a typical lefty multiculti way: “See how I really understand your culture?” Blech.

However Tevi Troy think Obama may have hoisted himself on his own petard, as he is wont to do.

Second, and more surprisingly, is this really the context in which he wishes to discuss health reform — a powerful and unseen being making determinations of life and death? One would think that he would want to avoid anything that could raise the specter of rationing, death panels, or the like.

God to Obama: “I called you a “Pre-tend-er” not a “Part-ner”! You need to clean out your ears. Here’s Hurricane Bill…

We are moving dangerously close to a remarraige between church and state. To even suggest we need to partner with any religious group to make the decisions for any kind of heath care is mind boggling. I don’t want any input from any group when it comes to my private decisions on treatment, most of all the governments intervention. If I need God’s help with that decision, I can go direct and cut out the middleman.

FWIW – I also didn’t like Pres. Bush’s faith based initiative. It’s always, is it your religion or mine that will give the advice?

Most Jewish people in America are somehow connected to Israel one way or the other

No-they’re not.
When I was a teenager I asked my father why we weren’t going to move to Israel. My father-born in Iowa-shot back that we weren’t Israeli-at all.
We were proud Americans.
Simple enough?

Christians? Jews?

I thought we were a Muslim nation…I’m sooo confused.

Folks, if that’s not blasphemy I don’t know what is.

The Bible teaches that there’s a lot God will tolerate. Ignorance. Sin. Willful disregard, even. But a human who pretends to be equal to God doesn’t wash well with the REAL One, the great I AM.

I hope Barack Obama is on his knees right now.

“We are God’s partners in matters of life and death,” Obama went on to say…

Obama is the very same double-speaking politician who voted to deny babies born alive from botched abortions the “right” to medical care after birth…I wonder what “god” Obama’s partners with…
