Jesse Jackson Jr: The public option would be as awesome as the post office

posted at 2:10 pm on August 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

A layer cake of stupidity, starting with the fact that this guy’s actually doubling down on one of the dumbest gaffes committed by The One since he took office. Parse his logic: If we didn’t have the postal service as an alternative to private carriers like Fed Ex, UPS, and DHL, what, oh what, would stop them from charging $100 per letter? Any theories, possibly involving basic economic dynamics and/or longstanding federal statutes? For fun, try putting the question to a fifth-grader and see if he comes up with an answer more incisive than Triple J.

To think, some people are worried that Obamanomics is based on a very, very deep misunderstanding of economics.

The proliferation of Obama’s gaffes and non sequiturs on health care has exceeded the allowable limit. He has failed repeatedly to explain how the government will provide more (health care) for less (money). He has failed to explain why increased demand for medical services without a concomitant increase in supply won’t lead to rationing by government bureaucrats as opposed to the market. And he has failed to explain why a Medicare-like model is desirable when Medicare itself is going broke.

The public is left with one of two unsettling conclusions: Either the president doesn’t understand the health-insurance reform plans working their way through Congress, or he understands both the plans and the implications and is being untruthful about the impact.

Neither option is good; ignorance is clearly preferable to the alternative.

Preferable, yes, but less likely. Exit question one: Who wants to break the news to Jackson that the money-hemorrhaging postal service has a legal monopoly on first-class mail, which, possibly, means we pay more to send a letter than we would if Fed Ex et al. were allowed to compete? Exit question two: If Jackson’s so worried about monopoly power over health care, why on earth would he support a public option whose creator openly admits that it’s bound to lead to single-payer? Again, is this ignorance or just dishonest spin?

Blowback

Do these people think that just because the flag is flying outside of the Post Office that it is an efficient entity? Have any of them been inside of the P.O.? Done any transactions with the USPS? I believe that they use the USPS as an example for us to point out that when they need more money to keep it afloat they just raise prices. That is what will happen with Healthcare also, except they will raise taxes not stamp prices. We are also not forced to us the USPS, FedEx or UPS, but they are forcing us to choose a healthcare plan.

It’s so impolite to call a distinguished elected official (or even a Chicago politician) ignorant, so let’s just say that JJJ has a grip on basic economic principles that’s every bit as firm as that of The One.

You can apply for a passport at many post offices around the country. The fees and payment methods are listed below. For an additional $15 fee, your passport photo may be taken at some of these offices as well.

Use the (Locator) to find the closest Post Office™ to your home or office that accepts passport applications. Some offices may require an appointment to accept your passport application or take your photo, so please call first.

Select, complete and print a Passport Application Form in advance to abbreviate your visit.

Forms are also available at your local Post Office and many public libraries.

If Obama really considers the USPS to be in direct competition with say UPS, does this mean I can get my passport from UPS? Maybe the processing would be quicker.

liberal343 on August 19, 2009 at 2:17 PM

USPS vs FedEx/UPS is not quite an apples to apples comparison with ObamaCare vs Private Insurers.

If you tweak it a bit though, you’ll begin to see what the real issue is. Assume that there was a law that regulated how much UPS/FedEx workers had to be paid, how they could operate and what they were allowed to charge. Laws that forced them to provide service that wasn’t wanted at a price that was so low that they were hemoragging money.

Now, assume that the government was providing the same crappy service for the same low price.

There’s really not much competition there. Use UPS/FedEx or the Post Office….it doesn’t really matter. The larger difference is on the back end. The U.S. government can keep raising taxes and printing money to cover the shortfall in their operating budgets each year. UPS/FedEx wouldn’t be able to do that. Eventually, they would be forced out of business….

Because FedEx and UPS are allowed to operate in a relatively free market with package delivery, they’re able to beat the post office on a regular basis.

If they were allowed to try with first class mail, we’d likely see an improvement there as well.

Well at least everyone is getting a good eyeful of our local Chicago pols (ncluding those in national office), as embarassing as that is. As the late, great Mike Royko said, the unoffical motto of Chicago is “Where’s mine?” These guys and gals are absolutely geniuses when it comes to accumulating power, feathering their own nests and ripping off the taxpayers. They are not so smart when they have to act in the best interest of the public, and take their buddies off the gravy train. Good government types here are infantilized by the political overlords as “goo-goos,” and the local machine is famous for not wanting “nobody that nobody sent.” I heard a City Hall reporter opine that waste, fraud and inefficency eats up about 30% of local tax dollars, and the Better Government Association executive director stated that he would consider it a success if reforms could cut two percent off the “corruption tax” which I think he estimated at about 20% (not sure of the figure). There are several generations of some families who just work this corrupt system for their benefit, and enthusiastically, if not thuggishly, support everything the political bosses want, because they are getting a piece of the action.

Oops posted too soon. The correct way to frame this is to point out the huge variety of industries that compete succesfully with public options including private schools, security firms, housing, etc. etc.

CrankyIndependent on August 19, 2009 at 2:30 PM

First of all, housing is a ridiculous analogy because public housing is a social support program. Most people aren’t “in the market” for public housing the way they are for private housing. There are income eligibility requirements, for example.

The analogy also fails because the express desire of the proponents of public education and public housing and public safety hasn’t been to eliminate private provision of those goods or services (yet). You pay for public schools whether you use them or not — in fact whether you have kids or not, and if you have kids, whether you have them in public schools or not. Where the option has been presented to leave a funding choice in the hands of the consumer, as is the case in education with vouchers, the public establishment has labored mightily to restrict the market for private competition. Try again.

This one, I have to call out.

Monopoly is the natural goal for any business – to create an environment where there is no competition.

Monopolies are not necessarily malignant, although they’re certainly not necessarily benign.

Government-permitted monopolies, in the electrical power arena for instance, bind the one remaining company into a straitjacket, to ensure it’s behaviour is, at worst, benign.

CrankyIndependent on August 19, 2009 at 2:30 PM

You said that on another thread and it wasn’t correct then and it isn’t correct now, as my quoted response to you over there shows. Yes, I know it’s bad form to quote oneself, but this whole public/private competition thing is just ridiculous, especially when the architect of the main underpinnings of the “public option” specifically says it will push private insurers out of business.

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/290735.php

How many private schools do you think there were before public schools came on the scene? Private schools by the thousands have closed since then. Look at the Catholic school system in Chicago now versus what it was.

Security firms are similarly a niche business. Shipping is a larger niche, but the public and private entities employ different business models, so don’t compete directly in the bulk of their operations. Housing is just a bizarre example, so I’m not sure what you mean. Most people choose their housing by location, not by who owns or runs it. Since most public housing is in locations that most people find undesirable, I don’t see how it competes with private housing.

I apologise to the rest of the US for the politicians that come out of Illinois. I was born and raised here, but I will be leaving soon. This state is nothing more than an big red state with a powerful blue city of socialism. Highest taxes in the country, crook after crook, both parties mind you, and debt beyond repair. We are being taxed out of our homes and they blame the banks. We have tried to build hospitals and they deny permits, thus keeping costs high and people from fast emergency care. They take gas tax intended for roads and spend it elsewhere, lottery money intended for schools and spend it elsewhere. The Chicago political machine is now in charge of your country. As you can see, it will not take them long to destroy it. While I will admit bush turned out to be an idiot when it came to fiscal policy, what this administration does will make bush look like a conservative again. Illinois sucks. Thats all I can say. But no worse than California, New York, or Pennsylvania. It it any wonder that the biggest debtor states are the most liberal?

Jessie Jackass Junior is an imbecile. If I was the man in charge of Federal Express, UPS or DHL I would stick a boot up his ass. I would issue a very harsh statement condemning the Post Office as a near-bankrupt example of what happens when the government runs business (into the ground), and then criticize Jessie Jackass Junior as an economically illiterate imbecile who doesn’t understand something as simple as why charging $100 for postal delivery would be bad for business. I’d also explain that he’s so stupid, he doesn’t even get the fact that e-mail isn’t hurting FedEx, UPS or DHL; it’s hurting the USPS. Then, I’d go on to talk about the fact that we provide our employees with very good health benefits, and that Jessie Jackass Junior is merely looking to push a socialist agenda that would penalize corporations like FedEx & UPS if they continued to provide these services to their employees. Furthermore, I’d go to his office and say it to his face, on camera.

Virus-X on August 19, 2009 at 3:08 PM

Triple JJJ’s argument is nonsensical and circular. He bamboozles himself as he tries to bamboozle his constituents with his glib nonsense. My USPS postal carrier is angry every time that she has to exit her postal chariot to carry a package 20 feet to my door. Lately, she stands just outside the chariot and throws it at the door and then flips her considerable mullet back over her shoulder and clambers back into the chariot! And this is the analogy for health care reform? What a maroon.

I feel your pain, I was just a youngster when I lived in Chicago but I do remember the folks talking about what a crook Daley was and how bad the corruption was. I remember vividly the 68 Democratic convention. It’s a nice place to visit, Chicago, but…

This one, I have to call out.

Monopoly is the natural goal for any business – to create an environment where there is no competition.

acat on August 19, 2009 at 2:58 PM

But the only time you’re going to have NO competition is when the government becomes too involved. In any pure market system, there will always be at least some competition.

The Dean on August 19, 2009 at 3:14 PM

The correct way to frame this is to point out the huge variety of industries that compete succesfully with public options including private schools, security firms, housing, etc. etc.

If I send my kids to private school, will I get a tax refund for my portion of taxes which is applied to public schools?

Again, is this ignorance or just dishonest spin?

With an administration filled by and supported by psychopaths and morons it’s is becoming increasingly difficult to separate out the two.

What was the “look” he gives at the end of the clip?

scalleywag on August 19, 2009 at 3:17 PM

I watched it again. I actually felt myself get dumber.

Lenin referred to people such as Jesse Jackson, Jr., and the usual suspects, as “useful idiots.”

Let’s just call them “idiots.”

coldwarrior on August 19, 2009 at 3:17 PM

JJJ knows who his audience is and is talking to them. They are the ones dumber than a box of rocks and JJJ knows it and will say anything to get this POS legislation passed.

JJJ and the dems still think that they have the numbers on their side to get this done.

cjs1943 on August 19, 2009 at 3:18 PM

What a moron. Does he not realize that competition keeps prices down. Does he not realize that UPS and DHL and FedEx are in competition with each other for business, and that is why they charge a reasonable rate for a fair profit.

If it weren’t for UPS, DHL, FedEx and the others, the USPS would have a monopoly on the movement of packages and letters, and then you could bet that they wouldn’t be in the red, because they could charge an arm and a leg to carry your letters.

Thank God we live in a free market, capitalist nation where good works are rewarded.

Do me a favor, Dean. Go read up on a little something called the Standard Oil Trust. Then come talk to me about monopolies.

More proof that a “public option” is only step one:

http://www.professorbainbridge.com/professorbainbridgecom/2009/08/from-the-trojan-horses-mouth-they-plan-on-a-slippery-slope.html

It takes a special type of jerk to lie right to Americans’ faces and tell them “Oh, don’t worry, it won’t lead to single payer”, when they know very clearly that’s where it will lead. These people are scum.

venividivici on August 19, 2009 at 3:22 PM

What’s all this talk about a “pubic option“? Are greedy doctors going to cut off our ‘nads?

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on August 19, 2009 at 3:22 PM

now there are 47 million uninsured? Yesterday there were supposedly 40 million. Did 7 million people get cut from the rolls??

Then there’s his LAMEO “analysis” of free enterprise.

Let’s say there’re two sandwich shops on opposite corners. The ONLY thing that keeps them from charging $1,000 per sandwich is the existance of the Soup Kitchen at the Homeless shelter!

did I get that right?

Justrand on August 19, 2009 at 3:23 PM

They don’t call it snail mail for nothing! Such will be with ObamaCare…SnailCare!

fbcmusicman on August 19, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Comparing buying a stamp to using FEDEX is moronic. Let’s see with FEDEX you get guaranteed next day delivery by 10:00 a.m. for about $15.00 or you can send the same thing in envelop with a stamp for a 1 oz letter that could take up to week to arrive at it’s destination without any proof of deliver and if it’s lost in the mail too bad. So is this how our Public Health Option is going be? Waiting in line for who knows how long to visit a doctor that probably will work from 8-5 and too bad if you get sick before after office hours. If this is the best example of how public health care is going to work that’s very sad indeed.

I suspected Allah was going to like this clip. I howled when I saw it last night.

“It’s gold, Jerry, pure gold.”

At the risk of alienating a member of a group we’d like to see more of in under the conservative tent, I do hope JJJ remains outside the tent until he provides proof that’s passed a college-level course in basic economics and, for good measure, a course in personal finance at a local community college.
