Gibbs to media: You contrived this entire “public option” debate!

posted at 4:30 pm on August 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart. Ace thinks this is nutty, and it is — the firestorm exploded because of the Conrad/Sebelius double whammy on Sunday, not any contrivance — but The One’s fear of the media lining up with progressives to put the screws to him on a public option isn’t that nutty. Yeah, he wants a government alternative to private insurance, but the more the press pushes it, the more emboldened House liberals will be and the greater the risk that he won’t be able to find a compromise between them and the Blue Dogs. Result: The bill implodes, which is the one true Obama nightmare scenario. Today’s WaPo even quotes senior White House officials whining about the leftist backlash:

“I don’t understand why the left of the left has decided that this is their Waterloo,” said a senior White House adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “We’ve gotten to this point where health care on the left is determined by the breadth of the public option. I don’t understand how that has become the measure of whether what we achieve is health-care reform.”

“It’s a mystifying thing,” he added. “We’re forgetting why we are in this.”

Another top aide expressed chagrin that a single element in the president’s sprawling health-care initiative has become a litmus test for whether the administration is serious about the issue.

“It took on a life of its own,” he said.

Indeed it did: Per Rasmussen’s latest, support for a bill without a public option is down 19 points among Democrats since Sunday. If the media were truly siding with Obama against the left, they’d be spending less time on the intraparty war and more time writing puff pieces like this about health-care co-ops, to make a watered-down bill seem more palatable. As it is, suddenly he’s got skirmishes breaking out between Blue Dogs in the House, who claim there’ll never be 60 votes in the Senate for a government plan, and Harry Reid, who’s waving around the threat of reconciliation to force a bill through on a simple majority vote (whether that’s feasible or not). The lower Obama’s numbers sink, the more the Blue Dogs dig in; the more ink is spilled on the public option, the more progressives dig in. Exit question: Who blinks?

For the first time in over two years of polling, voters trust Republicans slightly more than Democrats on the handling of the issue of health care. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that voters favor the GOP on the issue 44% to 41%.

Democrats held a four-point lead on the issue last month and a 10-point lead in June.

But he isn’t their guy. Obama lost badly in most of their districts. Their constituents do not want a hardcore liberal agenda. Many of them already fell on their swords on cap-and-trade, but this bill is a bridge too far for them. And it’s unbelievably arrogant or stupid, or both, for Rahm Emanuel to not get this, since he put most of them into office.

Obama will be around for another 3 years, they have plenty of time to “make it up” to him. Pelosi is a direct threat to their existence and it would serve them better to knee cap her and her ilk. I don’t think that any of the them will need to blink since it’s imploding before their eyes. Whether it passes or not in the end Obama will be damaged goods. To say that his leadership (and subsequent handling of this entire fiasco) has been abysmal is being too kind. I keep asking myself “surely these people aren’t this stupid” yet I keep coming to that conclusion with each new “revelation” from O’s admin.

I don’t know why Obama doesn’t call a time out and scrap what’s on the table and start over – then he could at least claim that he’s taking the high road and listening to the will of the people. He’s really in a pinch here – no PO and the lefties pitch a fit; ram it through with a PO and the rest of the country has a meltdown. We may be witnessing the first stage of Obama’s slow burn into lameness – and once on that road he’ll never be able to turn it around, save for another rallying point like 9/11 (God forbid).

Democrats on a House committee are seeking detailed financial records from dozens of large insurance companies, officials disclosed Tuesday, part of an investigation into “executive compensation and other business practices” in an industry opposed to President Barack Obama’s plan to overhaul health care.

The request included records relating to compensation of highly paid employees, documents relating to companies’ premium income and claims payments, and information on expenses stemming from any event held outside company facilities in the past 2 1/2 years.

The congress has time to ‘fish for dirt’ on insurance companies, but won’t/can’t provide data on clunkers. Congress let Democrat Charles Rangle take 9 months to provide info to the ethics committee.

Seriously. Isn’t there a law against that? Sounds like a threat to me.

Nice job you have there. It would be a shame if something happened to it.

Doesn’t Gibbsy look a bit like the cartoon character “Underdog”, except far less noble.

clnurnberg on August 19, 2009 at 5:00 PM

Gibbs has reached his level of incompetence. That he would be a mouthpiece for such hilariously idiotic blame shifting demonstrates he has no intellect, no honor, no cred. Baghdad Bob indeed.

It will be interesting to see what he ends up doing after this job. Guest shots introducing broadcasts of “Pinocchio”, maybe, telling the children to learn from his mistakes.

The congress has time to ‘fish for dirt’ on insurance companies, but won’t/can’t provide data on clunkers. Congress let Democrat Charles Rangle take 9 months to provide info to the ethics committee.

If the Obama Administration were house builders they’d start with the roof, than the porch, than the walls and jack up the house to put a foundation under it. It’s amazing how stupid they are.

They would rather go find dirt, actually read the bill. Amazing.

Off topic: Don Hewitt, creator of “60 Minutes” just passed away.

Again, I think that “government plan” is much more descriptive than “public option”. There will not be an option given the incentives and it’s certainly not “public” in the traditional sense. It will be defined and administered and carried out by the federal government. It is a government plan. Not a public option.

I prefer “Fannie Med.” Much more colorful and much more accurate. If you like what the government option did for mortgage lending, you will love what it does for health care!

Allah,

Obama hasn’t changed his position on he public option at all.

Lets be honest. Saying that the public option is just part of his plan isn’t new. Saying that as long as any other ‘idea’ contains all he prerequisites of a public option it will be considered isn’t bailing on the public option.

The media is helping Obama by playing these word games. He is letting it get out there that the GOP has no plan that fits his criteria.

The genius of this strategy is that republicans have given up trying to define the debate on anything but Obama’s terms.

“Sure the public option contains all the necessary reforms….bu bu but..its the big bad government doing it.”

So after a few days with non stop debate about the public option we are left with the Dems being able to say even Republicans agree with what we want to fix they just want to do it with tax cuts, and deregulation.

The ‘devastating’ poll everyone here references also says Obama is at 47% on healthcare while the GOP is 26%.

Looks like wiggle room to ram through a Dem plan quarterbacked by Obama
