Drudge: Democrats ready to go it alone on ObamaCare? Update: NYT link added

posted at 9:22 pm on August 18, 2009 by Allahpundit

A teaser for an NYT bombshell due out later. Normally I wouldn’t post on it until the article’s up but this can only mean that they’re going to go all out for the public option and use “reconciliation” if need be to nuke the filibuster in the Senate, no? Why cut the GOP out of negotiations only to settle for some watered-down alternative like co-ops? If you’re going to kick the minority party out of the room and anger half the country, you might as well make the bill as syrupy sweet to your own side as possible. And if that means having to take a precedent-setting step as draconian as reconciliation to deal with Blue Dogs like Ben Nelson who might not accept a public option, hey. Besides, Grassley and Jon Kyl all but told the Democrats today that they won’t vote for the final bill regardless of what’s in it, in which case it’s pointless for The One to keep making concessions. He might as well get the bill he wants, paint the GOP as “the party of no”, and hope that the inevitable ill effects of his program don’t appear before the midterms. Which they probably won’t.

While we wait for the Times piece, a few fun data points from the new NBC poll out tonight. Note the numbers on question 15. The One’s really rolling the dice here.

Update: Here’s the NYT piece. Nothing concrete.

[S]uch a change could alter the dynamic of talks surrounding health care legislation, and even change the substance of a final bill. With no need to negotiate with Republicans, Democrats might be better able to move more quickly, relying on their large majorities in both houses. Democratic senators might feel more empowered, for example, to define the authority of the nonprofit insurance cooperatives that are emerging as an alternative to a public insurance plan…

Administration officials, who maintain that Republicans are badly mischaracterizing the legislation that has emerged from three House committees and the Senate health committee, said they had hoped to achieve some level of bipartisan support. But they are becoming increasingly convinced that they will instead have to navigate the complicated politics among varying Democratic factions.

The officials said the White House hoped to make the case to the American people that it was Republicans who had abandoned the effort at bipartisanship. Republicans countered by saying that they simply opposed the legislation and that the public outcry had validated their view and solidified their opposition.

One senior administration official said the sense within the White House was that Republicans, in an effort to undermine President Obama and Congressional Democrats, had made a political calculation to oppose any health care legislation.

Thus did a party that no longer has enough Senate seats to pull a filibuster somehow become an obstructionist, utopia-destroying leviathan. Belated exit question: Is this all just a ruse by The One to put pressure on the Blue Dogs to accept a public option? Symbolically kicking the GOP out of the negotiations leaves the media free to focus on conservative Democrats as the true stumbling block to universal health care. Ironically, the “go it alone” move may be aimed more at his own side than at the GOP.

Health care is not a right.
The 10th Amendment is quite clear regarding the powers of the federal government,”The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

The Constitution does not delegate the power to run health care to the federal government.

“In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” – Thomas Jefferson

The right of revolution is an inherent one. When people are oppressed by their government, it is a natural right they enjoy to relieve themselves of oppression, if they are strong enough, whether by withdrawal from it, or by overthrowing it and substituting a government more acceptable. .- Ulysses S. liberal343 on August 18, 2009 at 9:58 PM

Notice that Fedex, UPS and the Post Office don’t actually have the same business model, which will not be true of a “public option” and private health insurers.

Aristotle says that one mark of genius is the ability to form appropriate analogies. By that standard, you, Obama and everyone who buys into this analogy are definitely not genius material (which may be the understatement of the millenium).

Typical liberal, you have it bass ackwards. FedEx and UPS haven’t driven the postal service out of business; and that’s for one and only one very simple reason: the post office has a monopoly on first class (letter) mail. If the government hadn’t mandated that the post office has no competition in this area the USPO would be a museum piece.

Oh, there’s a very good chance it’ll pass. And I’m fine with it. Republicans will have plenty of time to get it repealed and the Democrats will be severely punished by the electorate.

As I said before, Nate Silver is already talking about how many dozens of seats Dems face the loss of next year. And with ObamaCare not coming into effect until 2013, we won’t be taking entitlements away. We’ll be repealing legislation that hasn’t even begun delivering.

Boy I like these trolls.

Look if the Democrats want to own this one then do it. Just lay some astroturf on that groundwork for 2010 and 2012 when your butts hit the pavement. Adios.

You can’t expect to pass a bill that the American public blatantly does not support and expect to stay in office.

He might as well get the bill he wants, paint the GOP as “the party of no”, and hope that the inevitable ill effects of his program don’t appear before the midterms. Which they probably won’t.

Maybe, but given the financial shape of the country I have a feeling this thing will start to implode before then. If they can push this through, then they’ll push cap and trade through which means Obama’s done by 2012.

Sorry trolls. It may look like a victory, by you guys are done for the next 20-30 years. This is bad. But I’m content to let the Dems dig their own graves. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

let ‘em push. Push right up against the American electorate who is increasingly arrayed like a vanguard against their friable little plan(s)–There’s going to be some wreckage and the Obamacare Martyr’s Brigade is recruiting now…

Let’s write the epitaph for one of these congressman.

“Former Congressman Henrietta Legscratch willingly and wantonly aborted her bright and promising congressional career by casting her fateful and ridiculous vote for Obamacare in 2009. After the bill failed in the Senate, the President’s already weakened left flank collapsed, rendering the 60 congressmen and the president unelectable and politically dead. The resurgent right summarily mopped the floor in both the House and the Senate in 2010 with the carcasses of former Democratic congressmen and rapidly passed a sweeping array of tort reforms, free market solutions as well as patients rights reforms which the president was forced to sign or suffer another thorough a$$ kicking and pulling out of his feeding tube stuffed there by Rosie Odonnell herself. Following the epic fail of his signatory legislative effort and his remaining support, Obama continued his practice of conducting interviews with a whole new set of “homeboys” in the White House. The former speechtastic orator, the president has lately been seen rarely in public and stammers around the White House waxing nostalgically about styrofoam pillars.”

–On another note, former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel passed the halfway mark at Ft. Leavenworth Federal Prison.

Every year, my tomato plants leave Oregon on Day 1, and I get them in perfect condition on Day 3 without exception. The quality of these plants after being shipped 3000 miles is better than the quality of the plants from most of my local nurseries.

Old legal adage…read the damn thing before you sign it.

Many people who have had major financial difficulties regarding health insurance may have paid premiums for regular health coverage. Catastrophic coverage cost more. And every health insurance policy enumerates what is covered in toto, what may be covered if certain conditons are met (and those conditions are spelled out in detail) and what is not covered. It is a legal and binding contract between the insurer and the customer.

Not making enough money to purchase something not guaranteed in the Constitution, or deciding to spend your money on something else instead, isn’t discrimination.

Is it possible that the Dems have made a strategic decision to exchange the elderly voting bloc for a large Amnesty Illegal voting bloc?

Follow me here…..if they trade the elderly for the Hispanic illegal population (and mark them at 20 million + in the 2010 Acorn Census) then they can Welfare-ize the Illegals and boom….another 90% Dem voting bloc for generations (can anyone remember how the African American community has been voting since Welfare started 40 years ago?).

Anyone think that the exchange has been thought about at the White House?

Just a thought.

That’s pretty much what the American People are beginning to realize right now.

Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution is there a direct or implied right to health care. Nowhere. Whoever thinks there is such thing is looking at the Soviet Constitution instead.

When people invent rights in order to raid the Treasury, that will mark the beginning of the end for this Constitutional Republic.

newton on August 18, 2009 at 10:26 PM

And people are not going broke because insurance companies are refusing to make payments. I work in health care and I have never heard of this. People go broke for a lot of reasons, thus far Barney Frank’s bright idea to see to it that everyone in America gets to buy a house whether he or she can afford it or not as lead to a lot more bankruptcies and forclosures than health insurance companies have.

The truth is people often times refuse to pay health care costs. If they are having problems they are more likely to pay for the car and the house than the doctor.

Terrye on August 18, 2009 at 10:27 PM

Far more likely they are going bankrupt due to too much spending. Many bought houses that cost too much and cars as well. Then you cherry pick the data.

The GOP has stones enough to not go along with this. Maybe if some of the people railing against Obama right now had the stones to vote for the opposition rather than just constantly complaining about them we would not be dealing with this moron of a President.

Terrye on August 18, 2009 at 10:30 PM

AP:

Belated exit question: Is this all just a ruse by The One to put pressure on the Blue Dogs to accept a public option? Symbolically kicking the GOP out of the negotiations leaves the media free to focus on conservative Democrats as the true stumbling block to universal health care. Ironically, the “go it alone” move may be aimed more at his own side than at the GOP.

Yeah, that is what it looks like.

CWforFreedom on August 18, 2009 at 10:31 PM

The purpose behind Obamacare is control of the populace. Any other solution will not meet the requirements of the rabid left. Sadly, though I do not pity him, he has no choice.

ramarious on August 18, 2009 at 10:29 PM

Yep,it has, and never has had, anything to do with health care. Its all about control of people’s lives. The power for the left to control everyone else because they are smarter and superior to the peasants.

johnsteele on August 18, 2009 at 10:31 PM

Eric Massa’s constituents should start a recall petition. Let’s make him the first shot across the bow. Next someone needs to have a chat with the bimbos from Maine and explain that if they (or anyone else who has an R after their name) even thinks of voting for any piece of this crap pie, they get NO funds for reelection. GOP needs to get some broadcast spots out there…NOW.

coldwarrior on August 18, 2009 at 10:32 PM

They pretty much did away with Tenncare in Tennessee didn’t they? After it almost bankrupted the state? I see no reason why the GOP could not run on repealing this.

Terrye on August 18, 2009 at 10:32 PM

This is just dumb. If the “blue dogs” wouldn’t let it pass back in July, they sure as heck aren’t going to do it now as it sits. They’d be fools. These people are politicians above all else. It’s all about job security for them.

SouthernGent on August 18, 2009 at 10:32 PM

Ever since FDR threatened to pack the court when they found much of the New Deal unconstitutional the SCOTUS has been very quiet.

DerKrieger on August 18, 2009 at 10:17 PM

Problem is, as you have stated. They prefer not to, are scared to rule on laws passed by Congress. Or, Congress could add justices or, put language in the bill forbidding supreme court review.

Jeff2161 on August 18, 2009 at 10:33 PM

red131 on August 18, 2009 at 10:31 PM

The problem with that is federal elected officials are not subject to recall.

As a symbolic gesture, it certainly would be a shot across the bow though.

Seem to have forgotten 1996’s repeal of a lot of welfare entitlements. That 1996 Welfare Reform Act? Congress wrote it up, Clinton signed it. So, yes, entitlements can be abolished or cut.

coldwarrior on August 18, 2009 at 10:30 PM

Sure. Especially when you have a weak president who has run up trillion+ deficits. Let’s see. Will the voters support a huge tax increase to deal with the deficit? Or how about eliminating a new program that most people opposed in the first place? If the Dems are stupid enough to go it alone, the GOP would be stupid not to run on cutting this new unnecessary government spending.

Upstater85 on August 18, 2009 at 10:33 PM

Two things …

First … when is the vote?

There’s a Tea Party march on Washington, DC on Sept. 12. If the vote is after that – a good showing will intimidate Democrats on the fence.

Second … now is the time for the GOP to make a move …

Show the Democrats what they’ll be facing next year – give them a taste. Run some ads DIRECTLY against the Democratic party with these talking points …

1. Democrats at war with America (Nancy’s fascist comments and Harry Reid’s “evil mongers”)
2. Democrats with the Trojan horse (Obama’s “I want single payer videos)
3. Democrats are clows (Barney Frank, Joe Biden videos)
4. Democrats don’t listen to consituents (Massa saying he’ll vote for public option against his constituents better interests)
5. Democrats as arrogant (Shiela Jackson Lee on Cell Phone)
6. Democrats as spenders (Graphs of Deficit)
7. Democrats as Socialists (Maxine Waters video talking about “socializing” oil companies.
8. On and on …

We have the material – let them peek into the abyss. The mods and the dawgs will back down.

jwp1964 on August 18, 2009 at 10:34 PM

Why the rush? Shouldn’t we use our heads and think this through? Our health care is need of reform yes. But what you want to do is instead of fixing the engine, you buy a whole new car altogether.

FontanaConservative on August 18, 2009 at 10:12 PM

Good analogy.

Oh, and add in, you’re going to buy that new car sight unseen, without ever having seen a prototype

BREAKING NEWS: Conservatives exploit newfound strategy to fight against ObamaCare

welcome_ghosts on August 18, 2009 at 10:35 PM

Mark my words. They pass that bill without the consent of those they are supposed to represent, and that will be the end of them. ACORN/SEIU or not.

newton on August 18, 2009 at 10:30 PM

I don’t think we should overestimate the desire of any of these Dems to cast their fateful vote in favor of Obamacare, then reap the cost next November. I think Rambo is handing out Golden Parachutes as we speak.

ted c on August 18, 2009 at 10:35 PM

If they pass this, you will KNOW that they do not fear elections any more.

And what that implies, I will leave to your imagination.
