Drudge: Democrats ready to go it alone on ObamaCare? Update: NYT link added
posted at 9:22 pm on August 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
A teaser for an NYT bombshell due out later. Normally I wouldn’t post on it until the article’s up but this can only mean that they’re going to go all out for the public option and use “reconciliation” if need be to nuke the filibuster in the Senate, no? Why cut the GOP out of negotiations only to settle for some watered-down alternative like co-ops? If you’re going to kick the minority party out of the room and anger half the country, you might as well make the bill as syrupy sweet to your own side as possible. And if that means having to take a precedent-setting step as draconian as reconciliation to deal with Blue Dogs like Ben Nelson who might not accept a public option, hey. Besides, Grassley and Jon Kyl all but told the Democrats today that they won’t vote for the final bill regardless of what’s in it, in which case it’s pointless for The One to keep making concessions. He might as well get the bill he wants, paint the GOP as “the party of no”, and hope that the inevitable ill effects of his program don’t appear before the midterms. Which they probably won’t.
While we wait for the Times piece, a few fun data points from the new NBC poll out tonight. Note the numbers on question 15. The One’s really rolling the dice here.

Update: Here’s the NYT piece. Nothing concrete.
[S]uch a change could alter the dynamic of talks surrounding health care legislation, and even change the substance of a final bill. With no need to negotiate with Republicans, Democrats might be better able to move more quickly, relying on their large majorities in both houses. Democratic senators might feel more empowered, for example, to define the authority of the nonprofit insurance cooperatives that are emerging as an alternative to a public insurance plan…
Administration officials, who maintain that Republicans are badly mischaracterizing the legislation that has emerged from three House committees and the Senate health committee, said they had hoped to achieve some level of bipartisan support. But they are becoming increasingly convinced that they will instead have to navigate the complicated politics among varying Democratic factions.
The officials said the White House hoped to make the case to the American people that it was Republicans who had abandoned the effort at bipartisanship. Republicans countered by saying that they simply opposed the legislation and that the public outcry had validated their view and solidified their opposition.
One senior administration official said the sense within the White House was that Republicans, in an effort to undermine President Obama and Congressional Democrats, had made a political calculation to oppose any health care legislation.
Thus did a party that no longer has enough Senate seats to pull a filibuster somehow become an obstructionist, utopia-destroying leviathan. Belated exit question: Is this all just a ruse by The One to put pressure on the Blue Dogs to accept a public option? Symbolically kicking the GOP out of the negotiations leaves the media free to focus on conservative Democrats as the true stumbling block to universal health care. Ironically, the “go it alone” move may be aimed more at his own side than at the GOP.

Oooh, those democrats are such tough-talking guys, aren’t they? Even if they did do this supremely stupid, fascist act, the changes are years off, so 2012 will be all about “restore American health care.” Obama has gone from “hero of the left” to “classic tragic hero” in 6 short months. He should have read some Greek tragedy instead of those lame sociology books he read in college. It’s the hubris, stupid, and it is most definitely King Obama’s tragic flaw.

I think they are betting that by the time election day comes around next year, Americans will have long forgotten the health care debate and will be concentrating on the current crisis … which will probably be a dollar that buys 0.0001 euros.

terryannonline on August 18, 2009 at 9:49 PM
I had given credit were credit was not due, thinking the Dems could not possibly be dumb enough to go it alone. With a majority of Americans voicing their opposition to the proposed plans, as well as satisfaction with their current coverage, it would appear to be political suicide to go the porkulus route.
The reality is that moderate Dems and Independents who voted for Obama have come to the realization that he is in fact the socialist that he pretended not to be last fall. Buyers remorse is setting in, and is sure to get worse in the near future.
Toe the line, I think America is looking forward to this fight. No single issue more clearly defines the ideologies of capitalism and socialism, and the outcome will define the political landscape of the United States for years to come.

I hear that. He blurted out some sort of nonsense last night about i/o an $8K tax credit for existing home purhase, how ’bout a $15K tax credit for ANY home purchase. We need the government out of all of this mess, give people time to pay off debt and get their feet back under them and quit all of this government incentive to incur more debt. Of course that’s what they want…..to re-inflate the bubble except this time the balloon is not latex but lead and nothing is going to reinflate this beast this time around…….and I really think some of them know it. But that’s all O/T. Cantor was really firm on health care last night but I sure hope he and the leadership do a better job in opposition then what they did on crap and tax. I really hold Cantor responsible for not keeping the troops in the fold for that vote. If he keep those 8 GOPs who voted ‘yay’ in the fold, that Marxist crap would have failed.

If it doesn’t go into motion until 2013, why can’t they go reverse nuclear, repeal the bill and start from scratch to fix the current system?
It will be chaotic but the people woudl be willing to suffer the consequences of a fix.
katy on August 18, 2009 at 9:52 PM
What would probably happen is militia groups, after getting organized, would knock out ALL ACORN offices and capture higher level members.
Attacks would then be mounted on the offices of all those Congressmen who voted for it on the grounds that the Constitution does not allow the federal government to control healthcare.
Police stations would get attacked IF the police did not but out or join up.
The entire war would be a short-term mess and would have videos all over the internet covering events.
Obama would try to shut the internet down and disrupt phone service so that the local militias could not link up and coordinate.
The big question would be, who would lead the effort. Also, would the US military attack US civilians?
If this passes as is, there would be grounds for open warfare per the Constitution, let alone the Declaration. Doubt that it will happen with just the legislation passing.
However, once all these statist policies collapse the economy, the chance of violence goes way up in the ensuing chaos.

Single-payer option or nothing.
Democrats have a supermajority in Congress – any backlash from passing this will do little to nothing to their majority in 2010.
Obama has the republicans in checkmate… this is the last of his major initiatives, next to immigration reform. It’ll pass with or without republican support. Sorry guys. You didn’t want to make concessions – you get left behind. Go blame Bush or something.

We must stop Herr Obama from swinging America by the tail,
And the Protests Go Rolling Along
Counter march! Right about!
Hear those at the tea parties shout
While those Protests Go Rolling Along
To the front, day and night
Where the constitutionalists against Herr Obama dig and fight
And those Protests Go Rolling Along
Our barrage will be there
Fired on the rocket’s flare
While those Protests Go Rolling Along
With the liberty loving blogs, boot to boot
We will join in Herr Obama’s pursuit
And those Protests Go Rolling Along
Action front, at a trot
Volley fire with shell and shot
While those Protests Go Rolling Along
Should the foe penetrate
Ev’ry conservative gunner for Herr Obama lies in wait
And those Protests Go Rolling Along
Fire at will, lay ‘em low
Never stop for any foe
While those Protests Go Rolling Along
But if fate me should call
And in action against Herr Obama I should fall
Keep those Protests a rolling Along
Then in peace I’ll abide
When I take my final ride
On a Protest that’s Rolling Along
For it’s “Hi! Hi! Hee!
In the Impeach Obama Family
Call off your numbers loud and strong
And where e’er we go
You will always know
That those Protests Are Rolling Along

DeMint called this fight Obama’s Waterloo after Obama himself said this the defining policy of his Presidency.
Time for a “teaching moment”…Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.
In 2010, the BlueDogs aka the LapDogs will summarily be exiled to Saint Helena by the American electorate. Followed by Emperor Obonaparte in 2012.
They may pass some counterfeit compromise, but this will only energize the opposition. This will be the catalyst that will bring down the Democrat majority. Their worst fear is sitting alone in mom’s basement contemplating what a loser this president is, how conservative this country has become, and the fact that 7-11 never called them back after that second interview. Let them stew. Sooner or later, the microwave will buzz and mom will yell down that their Hungry Man mac and cheese dinner is ready. Ignore them. Their parents do.

It seems to me, I remember the Democrats having a meeting in Virginia, where they decided there would not be a downside to filibustering George Bush’s court nominees and they did so. They filibustered Miguel Estrada and never paid the price with Hispanics. They never really paid the price on their filibusters until the Supreme Court came up and then they compromised.
Now, they feel there will be no price to pay for forcing this bill through, no matter how they do it, and with the press in this country they just might be right. I see people going to town hall meetings but I don’t see them going through the trouble of doing recall petitions. I see the Democrats having almost a year of free syncophant media to ease their polling with the public.
Unless they actually pay a price, you can expect more of this and not less. If they can force health care through, why can’t they force cap and tax through? They’ll get what they want and hope they have the votes, in 2010, to stay in office and do more damage.
