Wal-Mart, CVS, Best Buy join Glenn Beck boycott
posted at 9:48 pm on August 17, 2009 by Allahpundit
Mind you, this is a guy who beat Hannity — a show that airs in primetime — in both total viewers and the demo last Friday at 5 p.m. Every last one of these advertisers is simply biding their time, wondering how long they have to wait until nutroots wrath is appeased and they can start advertising on Beck’s show again. I give it six months. Less if Greta gets dumped and GB ends up moved to 10 p.m.
Twenty companies have pulled their ads from Beck’s show in just the last two weeks. The moves come after the Fox News host called President Obama a “racist” who “has a deep-seated hatred for white people” during an appearance on Fox & Friends. Previous companies who pulled their ads include ConAgra, GEICO, Lawyers.com, Men’s Wearhouse, Procter & Gamble, Progressive Insurance, RadioShack, Roche, SC Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, Sargento, and State Farm Insurance.
“We are heartened to see so many corporate citizens step up in support of our campaign against Glenn Beck,” said James Rucker, executive director of ColorOfChange.org. “Their action sends a clear a message to Glenn Beck: Broadcasters shouldn’t abuse the privilege they enjoy by spewing dangerous and racially charged hate language over the air. No matter their political affiliation, hate language doesn’t belong in our national dialogue.”
“Walmart [sic] today confirmed the retailer pulled ads from the Glenn Beck show on August 3rd,” said David Tovar, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.
“While advertising on Fox is part of our communication plan, we had not requested time on Glenn Beck’s show specifically,” said Carolyn Castel, Vice President of Corporate Communications for CVS Caremark, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “We have instructed our advertising agency to inform Fox to ensure Glenn Beck’s program is not part of our advertising plan.”
Right. Doubtless, like so many other Glenn Beck advertisers, the ad revenue will simply be redirected to other Fox News programs. Some boycott. Let’s vote on it.

Killer argument.

Just received the following from Walmart:
My name is Mae. I am with the Walmart.com Customer Service Team. Thank you for allowing me to assist you today.
We continuously review our media plans. In keeping with our internal guidelines to avoid content that is highly polarizing, we have instructed our agencies, as of August 3rd, not to run Walmart advertising in news commentary shows on national cable networks. This would include the Glenn Beck Show.
We thank you for taking the time to send us your comments. We value your input and be assured that we are currently looking into the points you raised.
We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.
Thank you for visiting Walmart.com. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and look forward to your next visit.
If we may be of further assistance, please email us at help@walmart.com. We’re here to serve you 7 days a week!
Sincerely,
Mae

Interestingly, they HAVE NOT removed their advertising in ALL news commentary shows on national cable networks, because just this morning I saw their advertisement on MSNBC!

There is an innate and there is a taught component to a love of learning.
I’ve lost track of how many students entered my high school chemistry classes and their first words were this is boring I don’t want to be here but I need the class to get into college. By the end of the year many changed their minds and went on to be Chemistry Majors in college.
You might argue that the love of learning was taught out of them earlier and I just reawakened it. If so, I would be hard pressed to disprove your supposition. I still think it can go both ways.

These companies are like a herd and that’s their mentality…some other company will emerge and say, “Hey we want the conservative customers …..” That will scare the herd because they’ll feel they are being shafted….they’ll all come a runnin’

This site has obviously rolled over for some Administration liberal internet watcher as it has been taken down.My post regarding the Glen Beck story contained only direct quotes about whites by Obama from his books “Dreams of My Father”, and “Audacity of Hope”. It wasn`t my subjective opinion, it was just facts from his books in his own words. This site is obviously under the influence of big brother

Look at “black culture” and imagine everything backwards; emphasis on supporting oneself instead of on welfare, not wanting to reward having bastard children all over the place, glorification of law-abiding people who do constructive work for a living, and proper use of the English language.

Why should they pull their advertising from MSNBC? Nobody is boycotting MSNBC’s sponsors, whereas liberals and conservatives are both boycotting FoxNews’ advertisers.
FloatingRock on August 18, 2009 at 1:34 PM
But not all black people live like that. It’s patently absurd and, dare I say, offensive to label welfare, illegitimacy, crime, joblessness, and “proper use of the English language” black characteristics.

I’m not saying they should pull their advertising from MSNBC. They said that in their letter to me which I quote again:
“We continuously review our media plans. In keeping with our internal guidelines to avoid content that is highly polarizing, we have instructed our agencies, as of August 3rd, not to run Walmart advertising in news commentary shows on national cable networks. This would include the Glenn Beck Show. ”
They’re the ones saying that they instructed their agencies not to run Walmart advertising in news commentary shows on national cable networks. I’m just saying that they didn’t do what their letter to me indicates.
oneconcernedcitizen on August 18, 2009 at 1:39 PM
Fair point. Culture itself is a lot more important than the race of the people living in that culture. Would you be ok with the term ‘urban culture’ to describe people of any race fitting Dark Star’s description?

Of course not, being called Oreos or Uncle Toms gets pretty tiring, I’d bet.

From Progressive:
Thank you for reaching out to us.
Some media reports have created the incorrect impression that Progressive pulled advertising in response to specific comments made on a show, but that is not the case. We did not buy advertising time on the The Glenn Beck Program, so when we learned that our ad had aired during the show, we corrected the error. I hope this clarifies the situation.

Don’t know if this has been posted yet, however, a website has been created to spearhead those who want to support Glen and respond in kind to the advertisers going along with this blatant attempt to censor the airwaves. If the OBOT DRONES succeed with this it will expand to other conservatives in the media. Like the health care fiasco to assert more control over people this must also be a line in the sand stand. This could set a very dangerous precedent if we don’t stop this New Age McCarthyism!

that’s better (as in more accurate). Culture is about place, not skin color. It’s also about education, and class, and income, and lots of other factors. which is why Beck’s jaw-droppingly dumb comment deserves a little push-back.

Who’s trying to “shut down” his show. Maybe advertizers don’t want their hard-earned brand-repuattion associated with a moron who makes the patently false accusation that the POTUS hates “white people” and “the white culture.” And in a free country, that’s their right, is it not?

I don’t care where they advertise. I am upset that they are following orders of those trying to shut down free speech by kow-towing to far-left radicals. They have also spent money supporting this socialized medicine fiasco.
Laura in Maryland on August 18, 2009 at 2:15 PM
Thousands of rabid libtards.
Or maybe ‘advertizers’ don’t have the spine to stand up to the blistering campaign of customers who want censorship by proxy. Although since we’re in a recession I can’t blame them too much for trying to hold on to every consumer dollar they can get.
And you do have a point – this is a free country (supposedly) and the free-market can cut both ways. Conservative talk-show hosts are sometimes as vulnerable to threats of financial ruin as peddlers of smut and the Jim Crow bus-lines of yesteryear.

Response from Best Buy, I emailed the PR person quoted in the Color of Change press release:
“Thank you for your message. I would like to provide the facts of this situation. Best Buy has never advertised on or around the Glenn Beck show, and we have no plans to do so. We do advertise during an early morning time slot on FOX, but not near the afternoon or evening. I know there is some misinformation floating around. I thought it would be helpful for you to understand that we have not changed our advertising strategy.
I appreciate your concerns. I am hopeful that this will help you better understand the situation, and potentially restore your willingness to shop in our stores. We would welcome the opportunity to serve you.

Okay, I’m willing to go as far as Obama himself went:
When he accused the Cambridge police of “behaving stupidly,” knowing nothing more about the circumstances than that the the professor is black, Obama was behaving like a kneejerk racist. That’s not to say he IS a racist, just that he was acting like one. Each of us can draw his or her own conclusions from his behavior.

All I can say is wowwwwww. How can anybody say that with a straight face? Anybody can be a racist. Chinese-Americans can be racists. Black Americans can be racist. Whites can be racist. It’s not exclusive. I remember a woman of Eastern Asian descent at the Kroger I worked at saying that the Indian-American man who works there (one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet) should go back to where he came from, just because she didn’t get her way. How is that not racist?
NathanG on August 18, 2009 at 3:24 PM
It’s one thing to have a private opinion or hypothesis that Obama is a “racist” who ‘hates the white man”…it’s a whole different ballgame to go on national tv proclaiming it as fact.
All Glenn Beck is doing is fomenting racism and hatred.
He has exposed himself as a moron and a racist.
This may be because of the inherent racism involved in the mormon cult that Glenn Beck is involved with. They have a long and bloody history of racism in their theology.
(BTW this is also why Mitt Romney is unelectable.. regardless of whether Romney is or is not racist he will be unable to fight this charge.)

Last night I was watching the replay of Beck’s show so that I could try to support his current advertisers. The first one was some sort of “Shark Mop”. I don’t do much mopping at home, so that one is out. The second one was a penis enlargement commercial from extenze. I don’t need that product either. The third commercial was freecreditreport.com which is basically as scam (strike 3). The fourth one was a commercial for registering inventions. I’m not an inventor (Strike 4). I gave up.
Thunderdome on August 18, 2009 at 3:26 PM
Um, he didn’t say it was a ‘fact’. He said he BELIEVED he could be.
And in no way is Beck racist because he called a spade a spade so don’t even try to play that card.
RedbonePro on August 18, 2009 at 3:31 PM
Frankly, the advertisers that left won’t make much of a difference. There are plenty of companies more than willing and able to advertise on Beck’s show at the going rates. I figure the ad dept. at Fox News will fill up the openings almost immediately and the advertisers who abandoned the program after pressure from ultra-liberal groups will suffer from doing so. There is precedent.
Carl on August 18, 2009 at 3:35 PM
He’s not a moron and he’s not a racist. Perhaps he was wrong to talk about this in public…some people obviously are very bothered by it. But why would you accuse him of racism? If we followed your logic, then every lib who has called town hall protesters racist is also, then, racist. Call somebody a racist, and you are then, by definition, a racist. Eventually the word will no longer have any meaning at all.
And you want us to believe all Mormons are racist? For someone who purports to object to hate speech, you’re pretty quick to engage in it.
Dee2008 on August 18, 2009 at 3:39 PM
Well, simplesimon, it sure as hell isn’t rednecks, nascar fans, or trailer trash that have driven this country to the brink of ruin. The upper class cultural sophisticates, the brainiacs of our financial, academic, and political institutions have nothing at all on us white-trash when it comes to being disgraceful to your race, and to our nation.

A responsible person wouldn’t go on national tv making unsubstantiated claims that obama is a racist who hates the white man.
Glenn Beck is an irresponsible hate mongering shock jockey. All he is doing is fanning the flames of racism and hatred.
He should be ashamed of himself.
Ok glenn, if Obama is “a racist with a deep seated hatred of the white man” why are all of his appointees and handlers white men? If you’re going to make ridiculous statements like this that do nothing but encourage racism in our society at least back them up with facts.

The part about Obama hating white people? I guess all those white people in his cabinet are, um, evidence that he’s deviously trying to give the impression he doesn’t hate white people when really he does? And as for Beck, let’s parse his rhetorical brilliance shall we?
Beck says in one breath that Obama “has exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people, or the white culture.” In the VERY NEXT BREATH, he then says, “I’m not saying that he doesn’t like white people.” Which is it, O Genius Glenn?

It is possible to distinguish the individual from his or her ethnic group. Having a negative perspective on a particular culture would not necessarily prevent one from having positive associations with individual members of that culture. I think that’s the distinction Beck was trying to make. It’s a subtle point.
This is why Obama could work effectively with whites, and even count some of them among his friends, while all the while listening to Jeremiah Jones ranting in the pulpit for all those years.
