Video: People bringing assault rifles to Obama rallies now

posted at 7:51 pm on August 17, 2009 by Allahpundit

And maybe not just people on the anti-Obama side, either. CNN reports seeing at least two AR-15s at today’s event in Arizona, one of which was carried by a guy standing among those waving “Reform Now” signs.

As I’ve said before, it’s a security risk and a de facto provocation to the other side. And having the right to do it is no more of a justification than bringing porn to a meeting with the president would be. Exit question: Why?

In the end, all it really matters is sending projectiles downrange.

Keep up the appearance of knowledge. Then go to AR15.com, or GlockTalk.com, or any of the numerous other firearms forums, and dismiss the idea of the difference between a clip versus a magazine. Then all those “pretentious” ex and current military members, FFLs, gunsmiths, firearms training instructors, etc will give you the exact same reaming I did.

And in the end, all you will still be doing is defending ignorance of a topic. Pathetic.

If I may say so, that’s not a woman thing, that’s a liberal thing. Liberals often seem to think that saying a thing makes it so, or if it doesn’t, then by golly it should. They also don’t seem to care about the actual results of their actions, as long as they mouth the correct platitudes before/while performing them.

I don’t think it matters too much. Well, as long as you don’t go too far off the reservation.

-”Hand me that shell for my 9mm Beretta.”
-”Do you want me to put it in the speed loader?”
-”Yeah, it’s a semi-automatic revolver.”
-”So it’s an assault rifle, then?”
-etc.

Something fishy going on., somebdoy said one of those guys was a larouche guy

kangjie on August 18, 2009 at 4:36 PM

The local Phoenix news media made no mention of this guy carrying the assault rifle as on the pro CrockObama side at all, merely with the “protestors”. The editing of the news was such to appear for him to be against CrockObama and another “evil” person against the health care proposal.

But I don’t live in that world, just a bunch of guys who have hunted for dozens of years, we don’t get hung up on that…you hang with your buddies, I will hang with mine, and maybe even a few of mine may have served a couple of weeks somewhere, though I am sure not as important and experienced as your friends…mine a just a couple of old huntin boys that don’t know as much about firearms guns as you guys.
You enjoy your friends, I will enjoy mine, we just don’t have the military experience some of your friends do…why I bet if you ask for a sip of that Jack, your friends just stare at you and say “You do mean Jack Daniels” don’t you…

I hate offending the sensibilities of people who come three days late into a thread that was otherwise dead to complain that we’re smutting up the place.

right2bright on August 18, 2009 at 4:45 PM

But I don’t live in that world, just a bunch of guys who have hunted for dozens of years, we don’t get hung up on that…

right2bright on August 18, 2009 at 4:40 PM

I live in Wisconsin. I know plenty of guys who have hunted for decades and then go home and leave their guns lying around, unsecured, waiting to be stolen. They don’t obey the gun laws, and a lot of those guys see absolutely no reason why anyone would want to carry a handgun for protection, or own an “assault rifle”. They’re known as “Fudd”s, because they know about as much about firearms as Elmer. They see guns as nothing more than toys for “fun shootin’”. I don’t know if you’re one of these guys, but they give me the same response when I try to teach them about the firearms they use.

You also don’t need military experience to know your weapon, and the proper usage of it. I still see hunters horsing around, fingers on the trigger, pointing it in the direction of their friends. That kind of irresponsible and ignorant behavior is exactly the kind of crap that gets people added to the firearms casualties numbers that anti-gun zealots whip out at a moment’s notice. It’s not pretentious. Guns are tools, and deadly weapons to be respected. I’m surrounded by people who don’t recognize them as either.

MadisonConservative on August 18, 2009 at 4:47 PM

Rightwingguy on August 18, 2009 at 5:36 PM

Let me see:

-a .223 is not .22 caliber, or something like that
-somebody is doing somebody else’s mom
-If you call a magazine a clip you are a moron
-and no matter how much a civilian model of an assault rifle looks like it’s military brother, even if it looks exactly like its brother (all differences being internal) no one, under any circumstances, may ever refer to it as an assault rifle.
-some folks really love to dish it out, while only superficially paying attention to what others are writing.
-Some folks demand proof from others while supplying none for their positions.
-Charles Johnson is a narcissist, and lots of other name calling
-And, if you do not think this guy with the rifle is a fine upstanding citizen just doing his part for God and country you are an ignorant, bleeding heart liberal, code pink lovin’, misogynist (or effeminate, couldn’t quite figure that one out), racist, fascist, big government sycophant, urban RHINO, firearms dilettante troll who knows nothing about the real Americans who live in rural America.

And I’m sure I forgot some of the milder comments from the last nine pages. But it was a long twisting read that sometimes made little sense. It doesn’t look like any minds were changed, but everybody who read this probably lost a couple of IQ points.

I still think it needed a poll

Freedom is messy. We don’t all express it well and sometimes we are positively foolish in how we express it, but that never justifies limiting it. We should never be denied freedom just because it’s messy or inconvenient or difficult or time-consuming or offends somebody’s sensibilities. Freedom requires responsibility but it also requires tolerance. In a free society we try to instill responsibility and we hope for the best, but understand that humans sometimes fail and bad things happen. We learn to cope with that because the cost of limiting freedom to stop bad things from happening is just too damned high. I vote freedom. You will just have to trust that I will be responsible.

So it looks like this was planned and the police knew that at least one of the men was going to be there.

“It was Thursday that I called and talked to Al Ramirez, the representative from the Phoenix police department, and we were discussing – we’ve been around this rhetoric that was building up around William Kostric, who did this in New Hampshire. We knew this from 15 years ago when Janet Napolitano was a U.S. Assistant Attorney and prosecuted the Viper Militia out of Arizona, and how that was generated into something it wasn’t. We talked to Al and we were like, look, we know where this is going and we want to make sure, we come down, we’re peaceful, and we demonstrate the right of the people to carry their firearms. And the police protected our right.

They wanted to help – they assigned him [a police officer] to me. He was never more than 4-5 feet away from me. We had law enforcement around us to protect our rights to protect this firearm.”

cozmo on August 18, 2009 at 7:51 PM

You’re still pouting because I seriously couldn’t tell whether you were a conservative or a liberal? You stated afterwards that you weren’t a conservative, so what’s your beef?

MadisonConservative on August 18, 2009 at 7:56 PM

MadisonConservative on August 18, 2009 at 7:56 PM

I restarted no such debate. And I don’t think I ever stated here what I wasn’t, or was.

Several folks were drawn to this by the post count, most likely. And didn’t want to wade through all of the comments.

Rightwingguy attempted to bring the latecomers up to date. Having read all of the comments since I left, I filled in a lot of the stuff he left out. Then you started the name calling…again.

cozmo on August 18, 2009 at 8:02 PM

cozmo on August 18, 2009 at 8:02 PM

How is not being able to tell if you’re a liberal or conservative name calling? Or wait, was it just an “attack”?

MadisonConservative on August 18, 2009 at 8:03 PM

Wow. Get so touchy over your OS choice. When exactly did I attack you?

MadisonConservative on August 18, 2009 at 7:40 PM

I assumed it was a joke.

And I don’t think I ever stated here what I wasn’t, or was.

cozmo on August 18, 2009 at 8:02 PM

Why are you being so vague?

Esthier on August 18, 2009 at 8:05 PM

I assumed it was a joke.

Esthier on August 18, 2009 at 8:05 PM

Of course it wasn’t. When I start discussing computer software, it’s serious f***ing business! WINDOWS OR DIE!!!

MadisonConservative on August 18, 2009 at 8:07 PM

All one has to do is apply gun control ideas to other areas and it will be evident just how screwball those ideas are. Gun Control applied to the drunk driving problem would be to eliminate all cars over 150 cubic inches and put a governor to prevent them from going over 45 mph. Install a breathalyzer interlock so that the car cannot be started unless the operator’s BHC is below o.o1%. An ID card would be required to purchase alcohol; a previous DUI would prevent someone from so much as a glass of wine. These laws would apply to everyone regardless of their drinking habits.

Dissemination of child pornography on the internet can be eliminated with background checks for a computer or a blank CD-ROM purchase. Restrictions on the purchase of digital cameras would be imposed.

After all, people are not responsible for their crimes, it is the objects they use.

Holger on August 18, 2009 at 8:14 PM

I should have read more comments; this thread is no longer about guns, gun control, and civil rights.

I also forgot to log off and log back in.

I still think it needed a poll

Madison Conservative can call me a moron…you do not have nor have you earned that right.
You are the guy that comes to the party and we call “a fun sucker”…next time just sit quietly and wish you would have entered earlier.
You added nothing but your ignorance…no wait you added this:

Then you started the name calling…again.

A whine….just what we needed…

No, liken it to Free Speech…there are times when it is restricted, without infringing on freedom of speech.

Wasn’t a whine, just a statement of fact.

Esthier on August 18, 2009 at 8:05 PM

Is it pertinent to the subject at hand? A disparaging statement was made without any information other than prejudices on the part of the person making it.

You are the guy that comes to the party and we call “a fun sucker”…next time just sit quietly and wish you would have entered earlier.

right2bright on August 18, 2009 at 8:19 PM

I was here since last night, except for when I had to sleep work and spend time with the family.

As for ignorance, I have carried for over twenty years. And have experienced confrontation from both ends of a firearm. Bush 41 came by once to publicize one of his 1000 points of light. And gave the credit to all but the people who took care of the problem. But I did get a nice key chain.

Show me any statement I made that shows ignorance and I will concede to your statement.

cozmo on August 18, 2009 at 8:40 PM

-And, if you do not think this guy with the rifle is a fine upstanding citizen just doing his part for God and country you are an ignorant, bleeding heart liberal, code pink lovin’, misogynist (or effeminate, couldn’t quite figure that one out), racist, fascist, big government sycophant, urban RHINO, firearms dilettante troll who knows nothing about the real Americans who live in rural America.

Yet I ask you to cite my attacking people, and you first protest, then provide my confoundment that a supposed conservative(as this is a conservative website, such a supposition is quite natural) is indistinguishable from a die-hard liberal.

I guess it’s all “relative”. Well, as you say, wasn’t an attack, just a statement of fact.

You pulled the same thing last night and I went through the trouble of finding the quotes only to have you change the subject. You can do your own work this time.
