Video: People bringing assault rifles to Obama rallies now

posted at 7:51 pm on August 17, 2009 by Allahpundit

And maybe not just people on the anti-Obama side, either. CNN reports seeing at least two AR-15s at today’s event in Arizona, one of which was carried by a guy standing among those waving “Reform Now” signs.

As I’ve said before, it’s a security risk and a de facto provocation to the other side. And having the right to do it is no more of a justification than bringing porn to a meeting with the president would be. Exit question: Why?

Open carry is legal so if you don’t like it change that before you criticize the citizens.

rplat on August 17, 2009 at 7:55 PM

I’ve got no problems with this. If it’s legal to carry the guns then it’s fine. And this is nothing like carrying porn. Please.

Why? I guess they want lots of attention from the Secret Service.

Terrye on August 17, 2009 at 7:57 PM

There’s a time to make a point, and there is a time to be level-headed.

Generally, gun owners have respect for the weapon. I see this as being as foolish as breaking simple gun safety rules that most gun owners adhere to.

keebs on August 17, 2009 at 7:58 PM

There’s a difference between the right to do something and the right thing to do.

That concept isn’t that difficult to understand, I think.

SteveMG on August 17, 2009 at 7:58 PM

If it’s legal in Arizona, and he’s in Arizona, then what is the problem………….

I would rather have a firearm and not use it…………

Jaynie59 on August 17, 2009 at 8:03 PM

Lived in Arizona for awhile and it is common to see a side arm on a person. That’s their state laws. After two years there I never had a problem seeing a side arm displayed in public. As a matter of fact it was quite comfortable knowing that an armed citizen was near and if a wacko appeared that the situation would be calmed by a responsible person with a side arm.

mixplix on August 17, 2009 at 8:03 PM

They are making a political statement. To fully understand that statement we need to know who these people are, and with whom they are affiliated.

An AR-15 is kind of under powered if you ask me.

Jeff from WI on August 17, 2009 at 8:05 PM

Best to let the other side bring the guns as they are a weapon best used at a rally to crucify the side bringing them.

MB4 on August 17, 2009 at 8:06 PM

Not to worry, the ACORN crowd will no doubt be handling their weapons like in a movie or something, all sideways and sh$t. Those actually comfortable with them (ie raised pro-gun) are the ones that will know how to be effective.

Seriously, this is nuts. Leave it to the left to escalate and taunt. Don’t take this bait. How long until they use a “plant” at a rally held by those evil-mongering Right-wingers? Wait, does Napolitano realize that maybe the Left could be trouble too?? Nah…

All he’s missing is the purple shirt.

turn_right on August 17, 2009 at 8:06 PM

If it was legal in my state, I’d carry an AR-15 with me everywhere I went.

Rights do have a way of GOING AWAY when we don’t use them. Remember when it was weird to see someone chatting on a big bulky cell in public back in the day? Now it is so freaking common…..this is how commonplace guns & armed citizens SHOULD BE in a polite society. Crime would go WAY DOWN not up.

I’ve been keeping up with the discussion about this at AR15.com. A lot of people are making very convincing arguments that this guy may, in fact, have been a liberal.

MadisonConservative on August 17, 2009 at 8:08 PM

I carry pretty much everywhere I go, except for places prohibited such as schools or federal buildings. And since my favorite is a Desert Eagle .50ae, its a little hard to conceal, so I tend to wear it open in my shoulder rig, barring under the coat in winter. I have only had one police officer ever give me any trouble, but as soon as I proved I am legally allowed to conceal carry, he left me alone. I do get some stares when shopping, though. I work at a university and some of the faculty who don’t know me and seem me out will give me the ‘stink eye’.

Point is, its legal, its a guaranteed right and maybe it will just remind them what exactly is backing up that vote.

Wolftech on August 17, 2009 at 8:08 PM

Exit question: Why?

My guess would be that the news is playing up these rallies as powder kegs with lots of potential violence.

If you think you might be heading into a situation where people could potentially get violent AND you feel that it’s your obligation to go to make sure your voice is heard, then, it makes perfect sense to carry your gun with you.

I doubt these people went through all the hassle of getting a carry permit so that they could only take their guns to situations where they are guaranteed to be safe.

JadeNYU on August 17, 2009 at 8:08 PM

Woo Hoo! I assure you that was not the only weapon at that event.

Ever been to the airport in Germany? Soldiers walk the place heavily armed.

You might think it’s ridiculous to bring an assault rifle to protect yourself from a bunch of septuagenarians, but keep in mind that you’re also dealing with people in their sixties.

Jim Treacher on August 17, 2009 at 8:08 PM

Be aware of this:

“…in the spring of 1972, at Tulane University…students asked Saul Alinsky to help plan a protest of a scheduled speech by George H. W. Bush, then U.S. representative to the United Nations – a speech likely to include a defense of the Nixon administration’s Vietnam War policies. The students told Alinsky they were thinking about picketing or disrupting Bush’s address. That’s the wrong approach, he rejoined, not very creative – and besides causing a disruption might get them thrown out of school. He told them, instead, to go to hear the speech dressed as members of the Ku Klux Klan, and whenever Bush said something in defense of the Vietnam War, they should cheer and wave placards reading, ‘The KKK supports Bush.’ And that is what they did, with very successful, attention-getting results.”

I would not put any tactic or strategy beyond the leftists. They believe that they are they are in the right and they have no moral scruples, so they can justify almost anything.

Religious_Zealot on August 17, 2009 at 8:00 PM

I. Have. No. Words.

No, bringing a means of self-defense into an environment with a documented history of violent attacks upon innocent individuals makes no sense at all!

The only, only time you can “responsibly” carry a firearm is when there is absolutely no, zero chance that you’ll ever find yourself needing one.

I guess I had words after all.

Misha I on August 17, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction.

Keep your finger off the trigger.

Keep your gun unloaded until you are ready to use it.

Keeping a firearm and displaying it is no more dangerous than putting up a sign with a slogan. Worse as Mr. Gladny found out: he was beaten for his speech. By pro-Administration Union thugs.

When you exercise your rights in a civil manner there is no threat in doing so.

The threat comes from those trying to stop you from exercising your civil rights. When you use your civil rights safely, constructively and in a civil manner there is no threat involved. You are acting in a civilized manner by being civil.

When you are intimidated for exercising your civil rights there is a threat involved against you. They are acting in an uncivilized manner by not respecting your rights.

If the President is worried about his safety he can wear military body armor as CinC. He can carry a full combat load if he wants to, including quickclot in a medical kit. He can have automatic weapons as CinC and tote those around if he wants to feel safe. Perfectly allowable as CinC. And there is no threat involved in that, either. Nor in riding around in an M1A1 Abrams, although he should pay for street repairs if he does so.

Your car is far more dangerous than a handgun or rifle. And yet you practice driving safety at all times… one would hope. Never make illegal turns. Never run red lights. Signal lane changes… you wouldn’t want to endanger anyone, would you? Simple safety rules keep you safe and those around you as they are intended to do. When you see someone acting in an unsafe manner, then you really do have to do something and not depend on someone else to do the right thing. If you see a bozo try to point a firearm in an unsafe direction, say towards the President, take that bastard down even if you have to catch some lead to do so as that is your President.

That should not be hard to understand. It is what you agree to do in the Preamble of the US Constitution: provide for the common defense. You. Not the police. Not the Army. Not the Secret Service. Not Brinks. You.

ajacksonian on August 17, 2009 at 8:20 PM
