Poll: Should Vick play in the NFL again?
posted at 12:51 pm on August 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
While I was in Pittsburgh for the Right Online conference, the Philadelphia Eagles announced that they had signed former NFL star and ex-convict Michael Vick to a contract that could pay as much as $7 million. Vick had just been released a few weeks earlier from his sentence in federal court on charges surrounding a dog-fighting ring. Stories of horrible cruelties to the dogs involved have circulated for years, including electrocution and drowning of dogs that would not fight to the standards involved in the disgusting practice.
Needless to say, in a city that loves the Steelers, the decision by the Eagles to bring Vick onto their team was a hot topic. Even among the people at the conference, it became a conversation piece. One political reporter chatted with me about it and his former support for the Eagles — and how he was now considering life as a Steeler fan as a consequence of the decision. Others had more visceral reactions, and almost no one supported the Eagles’ decision or the league lifting its ban on Vick.
Yesterday, Vick tried to explain himself on 60 Minutes in an interview with James Brown, taking full responsibility for his actions and impressing on viewers that he learned his lesson. For those who say that his involvement with dogfighting showed a lack of moral courage, Vick says, “I agree”:
The New York Times’ NFL blog, Fifth Down, interviews a couple of people to judge Vick’s sincerity in this interview. Both seem to feel that Vick meant what he said and feels true contrition, although FD notes that this is impossible to know with certainty. However, that’s not really the issue here anyway.
Michael Vick committed a series of crimes, including terrible cruelty to animals unable to protect themselves from him and his co-conspirators. He got convicted of those crimes, and did his time without complaint. He has to abide by the terms of his release. What he thinks in his head doesn’t matter at this point, just as why he got involved in it in the first place is immaterial to the crimes themselves — a point Vick makes himself in the interview.
Vick paid the price for his crimes, as determined by the court. His crime didn’t involve the NFL or the games on the field — unlike, say, gambling on his own team might have involved the NFL. Now that Vick has been released, he should have an opportunity to earn a living. If an NFL team sees him and his talent as a net gain as balanced against his reputation, then the two of them should be able to contract for his services. Of course, fans can also vote with their feet. If football fans don’t like Michael Vick, they can avoid buying tickets to Eagles games, or jeer Vick and the Eagles on the field when they appear. That’s perfectly legitimate, too.
I think the NFL did the right thing by lifting the ban after Vick’s release. I’m not especially supportive of the Eagles’ decision to pay Vick to play football per se, but I definitely believe they should not have been blocked from doing so.
What do you think? Watch the interview and cast your vote:

I don’t for a minute condone what Vick did. I won’t defend the indefensible.
But there’s something to be said when a pro athlete drives drunk, kills an innocent human being, and completely escapes any jail time.
Michael Vick and Donte Stallworth both committed serious crimes. And yes, Vick was sadistic in perpetrating his crime, while Stallworth was not. But does that difference exonerate Stallworth from having to do ANY jail time? He took a human life, and his “punishment” was to pay a financial settlement with the victim’s family. You do agree he should “suffer all the consequences society sees fit.”
The problem is “society” had no say in the dispensing of justice to Stallworth, or the lack thereof. In the court of public opinion, I would guess most would argue he should do jail time. Who knows, maybe I’m wrong.
Anyway, we can agree to disagree on which crime or which punishment was worse. Have a nice day. I’m out!

Well, I for one would not be able to watch a minute of Vick without thinking about the hideous things he did.
Enjoy your games.

Ruff ruff! Of course, everyone can change and deserves a second chance if they are really contrite. I bet a dog would give him another chance.

Every time I see Micheal Vick I picture him drowning a dog.

Well I suppose he could be electrocuting the dog.
Jeff from WI on August 18, 2009 at 12:52 PM
No one is “defending” him…you kind of post, and your cronies are so arrogantly phony.
Where have you seen anyone condoning his behavior…you won’t find it.
What he did is despicable…but that doesn’t matter to people like you, facts get in the way.
What most are saying is, he paid his debt, let him now show retribution, and give him a chance to redeem himself.
Many are Christian, and understand redemption…or do they?
He has done every thing asked of him by society…now it is up to him.
If he stumbles again, take his head off, no third chance, it is over.
But, allow him to redeem himself…if you know what “redeeming” means.

Could not care less but by definition professional sports is paying people to play sports – nothing more, nothing less.

No one defended Vick? This is more than a defense; it’s a downright endorsement.

I despise PETA, too.
The rest of your rambling post is not worthy of a retort.

One I tend to agree with. Since prison space is finite it should be reserved for perps who in some way harmed a HUMAN BEING. Vick didn’t. A fine would have settled his misuse of animals, a natural resource, for an organized crime gambling ring.

I’d have been happy to wave the prison time in exchange for him suffering the very treatment he inflicted on his dogs.
And I’m sure it would have been more instructive to him.

Here’s the thing about pitbulls. I wouldn’t have any problem with people owning pitbulls if the pitbulls would only attack/maul/disfigure their owners and the owners’ family members. If the pits could be trained to attack their keepers….then by all means have a sled team. But the problem with these xenomorphs is that they are RABID and attack innocent people. When Golden Labs start mauling faces like pits, then I’ll join the fight in banning them too. But until that time, I’ll focus on the wild animals that people shouldn’t be keeping as pets–known as pit bulls.
And I hope every pitbull owner experiences a day when their “beloved” pet fido decides to attack somebody, just because that’s what rabid wild animals do. And here’s the best part…….when the person attacked decides to sue the dog doo-doo off the pit bull owner. AND….it keeps getting funnier, not only do they get sued…..but fido gets put to sleep. *LOLOLOLOLO*
Have fun owning pits, y’all!

It’s a free country, still. I can still own the breed of dog I like, and you can continue to be an a-hole.

right2bright on August 18, 2009 at 4:50 PM
Whaddya figure is the right number of years for dogslaughter, the reckless but unintentional slaughter of a dog, like running over a dog in the street? 2 years? Surely you won’t let that go unpunished?
It may please you to rend Michael Vick limb from limb for his crimes, but that’s dog-thinking…
Chris_Balsz on August 18, 2009 at 5:00 PM
I will not attend nor watch a game with Vick on one of the teams .

“Cronies?” What are you blathering about? Wow.
Anyway, he should redeem himself in a minimum wage job. Now, that would be true redemption. Not trying to go back to his spoiled brat thug life. Cleaning toilets should do. He needs to learn real humility, not the 60 Minutes “pity poor me” kind. He’s the phony, not me and you’re a fool for believing him.

Don’t worry, Chris. If you ran over a dog unintentionally, I forgive you. Unintentional means you are not a sick bastard who enjoys inflicting pain on something more vulnerable than yourself. This is no reason to put yourself in the same category as Vick. Let go of your shame.
Or was it intentional? Did you deliberately swerve?
(BTW, I am not the Eumenides for victimized dogs. You are safe from me.)

Did you watch before? If not, then, well, your opinion is sort of moot. If you did, well, I gotta tell ya, the things Vick did pale in comparison to what a lot of the thugs in the NFL do on a daily basis.
Fed45 on August 18, 2009 at 6:22 PM
Did you before? If so, then your moral outrage boarders on the ridiculous and hypocritical. Because if this is the worst Vick did or ever does, he’d be almost saint by comparison to his peers.

Well, that says a lot for the fans.

Let me put it this way. I have stopped paying to see the films of several actors I think are quite talented simply because the views they hold are repulsive to me. I have missed out on some fine entertainment, I am sure, but I don’t feel dirty for indirectly supporting their vileness.
If you can watch Vick and feel good about yourself, knock yourself out.

I get ill just seeing Vick’s face. :(

Yeah, I don’t like pit bulls, either and I don’t trust them BUT that doesn’t give people the right to have these animals fight each other (for cruel, inhumane “humans’” ‘enjoyment’) nor does it mean it’s o.k. that humans torture or inflict pain on them just because they didn’t ‘live up to their standards’ or whatever – they have feelings just like humans or any other kind of animal; they FEEL pain.
brendy on August 18, 2009 at 10:12 PM
The reason these poor animals can be so aggressive is because they’ve had that aggression bred into them. It’s sad and it’s wrong, but I try and cross the street if I see someone with a pit bull.
