57% see no signs Porkulus is working

posted at 10:55 am on August 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), better known as the stimulus package or Porkulus, was supposed to be Barack Obama’s signature economic program.  Launched in the first weeks of his presidency, Obama declined to work with Republicans (or order Nancy Pelosi to do so) and wound up getting it approved with just three Republican votes in the House and Senate combined.  The $787 billion project was supposed to provide a “jolt” to the economy and keep unemployment from going above 8%.

Small wonder that a majority of Americans think it hasn’t worked:

Six months after President Obama launched a $787 billion plan to right the nation’s economy, a majority of Americans think the avalanche of new federal aid has cost too much and done too little to end the recession.

A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll found 57% of adults say the stimulus package is having no impact on the economy or making it worse. Even more —60% — doubt that the stimulus plan will help the economy in the years ahead, and only 18% say it has done anything to help improve their personal situation.

The poll’s skepticism is underscored by the methodology:

The poll Aug. 6-9 of 1,010 adults has a margin of error of +/–4% for the full sample. In a question asked of a subsample, 51% of Americans say the government should have spent less on the stimulus; 31% say the amount was “about right.” Also, almost half in the full sample say they are “very worried” that stimulus money is being wasted.

Gallup sampled adults instead of registered or likely voters.  That usually produces results more favorable to Democrats and liberal policies.  If a Gallup poll that samples results in the general adult population finds this much skepticism about Porkulus, the level of skepticism among likely voters — the best predictive sample for future elections — will be much higher.

As USA Today notes, this will be a big problem for Obama in the health-care debate.  Voters trusted him on the stimulus, and now almost a trillion dollars have been committed with no appreciable impact on economic growth.  Now Obama wants a trillion dollars to make the health-care system more efficient.  Had the stimulus worked, or had Obama not made those promises to get the $787 billion from Congress, he might have found it easier to push ObamaCare through Congress.

Instead, Obama bet his fiscal credibility on Porkulus, and he lost it.

The other 43% must be impressed by the six million dollars’ worth of porkulus roadsigns that proclaim their tax dollars at work on vast empty stretches of road where noone is working.

Or maybe they’re waiting on one of those “saved or created” jobs they’ve been promised.

Too bad Obama and his fabian socialist cronies had been “mispeaking” about the job-creation potential of the Porkulus from the get-go.

Khorum on August 17, 2009 at 11:00 AM

So Barack Obama’s Very Large Stimulating Package has left folks…. wanting, eh?

I think the worst of this is to come next year, though. I firmly believe they pushed this to get the cash in hand, and we all know there are very few restrictions or strings on doling it out. I can fully see cutting big ol’ checks in every state and district where Dummycraps are polling badly leading into the midterms.

That large amount of cash being thrown around may serve to help overcome election deficits, and Average People(tm) will have forgotten their anger at it in the first place.

At least, I’m afraid they will have forgotten.

JamesLee on August 17, 2009 at 11:01 AM

I suppose this means all those folks who came out with signs last April 15 are feeling the warm fuzzies now. I know I am.

(BTW, my sign was two sided. One side said “Make Love Not Debt” and the other said “Suppose They Gave a Bailout and Nobody Paid.” Yeah. Warm fuzzies now…)

apostic on August 17, 2009 at 11:01 AM

Even if the Stimulus bill had been a raging success, I still wouldn’t want ObamaCare.

The major arguments against ObamaCare aren’t really the cost of the program. That’s just the yummy gravy.

myrenovations on August 17, 2009 at 11:01 AM

But, But, but, I saw a sign on the highway that said it was funded by the Porkulus!

Of course, nothing in my county, it being of the overwhelmingly red variety. Even though traffic backs up on one stretch of the Interstate every afternoon….sigh…

kirkill on August 17, 2009 at 11:01 AM

Where are the stories in the MSM about all the people who’ve lost their jobs, who weren’t helped by Porkulus, who’ve been foreclosed upon, and are now homeless?

Where are those stories of the suffering masses? Where are the lengthy investigative pieces into the innocent lives ruined and un-rescued?

Surely these people exist. I know they do. I am one of them.

wanna boost confidence in the economy Obama? Get on your grandstand and rescind most of the unspent money… use catchy phrases like “due to my bold actions, consumer confidence has risen, along with the hopes and dreams of all americans to a level unseen during the last administration, to where we have finally arrived at a point where further government intervention is not required. Let me be clear – this does not signal that I’m no longer a big spending liberal, rather, this is purely a political move to try to ebb my eroding support.”

I’m still amazed that Obama got away with cooking the unemployment numbers from 9.5% to 9.4%, even though more people lost their jobs.

It should be 9.6%, or even higher now, but the entire media establishment rolled over on these phony numbers.

Simply amazing. Even math is a victim of the Obama administration.

Breitbart shows how the apparently leaderless conservatives/Republicans have turned the Alinksy model back on its practitioners in the progressive movement. You cannot “target” whole groups like tea parties and townhall “mobs” for the method to work. This is such beautiful irony. The target has become Obama, the symbol of out-of-control spending, an ever-increasing deficit, intrusion in people’s freedoms re healthcare decisions, etc.

This kind of poll won’t help Obama when he and his cronies run out there and take credit for “saving” the economy thanks to Porkulus.

It’s bad enough when the electorate thinks you’re a failure. It takes it to a whole new level though when they also feel you’re out of touch with what’s going on out there.

What amazes me is that there were people stupid enough to believe it would work, in the first place. Spending into the near-trillions to defeat the business cycle? Something that’s been around, since there’s been business, and Obama (who obviously knows nothing about the “Invisible Hand”) thinks he’s smarter than every other president in HISTORY, and he can defeat it by throwing money at it. The so-called ‘republicans’ that voted for it should’ve been recalled, and the liberal socialist democrats that voted for it should be thrown into the same trash bin. As opposed to saying anything intelligent, this administration has shown it’s never risen above the lowest-common-denominator of the bargain basement, resorting to saying things like he (Obama) doesn’t think people should be free to speak in opposition to him, hammering at the fact that he won a close election and that he’s the big man in charge, asking people to snitch on anyone that circulates factual data to refute his errata, then back-tracking and saying that he really didn’t say things that he, in fact, really did say (such as his non stimulating, stimulus, and his non-support of single-payer ‘health care’). Pathetic.

Virus-X on August 17, 2009 at 11:16 AM

Actually Ed missed an important bit from that poll.

As remarkable as the 60% figure that think the Stimulus will NOT improve or harm the economy in the long term. The last question is the most telling:

Fully 70% of those polled think that over the long term the stimulus package will do nothing or harm their personal financial situations. That’s 36% who think it will do nothing and another 34% who think it will harm their personal long-term economic well-being.

On the bright side it shows us that Americans on BOTH sides of the aisle have a firm grasp on precisely how much of a ponzi scheme Obama’s multi-trillion-dollar shot in the dark truly is. It means that Americans aren’t falling for Obama’s arguments that borrowing from your kids is gonna make their lives any better. But unfortunately 70% of consumers having little confidence in the their long-term prosperity is bad news for the entire economy.

I was surprised to learn that stimulus money is running through the USDA in the form of low cost loans for building/renovating residential real estate. I learned about this b/c my contractor husband was asked to bid on a job. The customer is a recent immigrant who I think is not a citizen. The loans are guaranteed by us, the taxpayers. The rules are such that a contractor/builder is practically required to turn their books over to the govt. to get approved. The job cannot be done within the proposed budget. Only an inexperienced or incompetent would attempt the job.
But remember, we don’t want experienced people getting those stimulus jobs.

He cares. He and his Administration are obsessed with polls. The problem Obama is now discovering(and anyone with half a brain knew was coming) is that his ideology is anathema to what the vast majority of this country believes in.

So when the American people soundly reject what he’s offering, he doesn’t know what to do. All he’s even done is community organizing and campaigning, neither of which are accomplishing squat right now aside from riling up the masses even more.

He’s got two choices going forward. Say to hell with what the American people want(ignore the polls) and ram through his agenda. Or set aside his ideology and become a pragmatic, centrist leader(like Clinton). Time will tell what happens, but I’m leaning toward the former.

Doughboy on August 17, 2009 at 11:43 AM

But the worst bias is what they DON’T report

For ex. African-American unempl. is at depression levels–a real catastrophe for that community. Yet Obama won’t do anything to promote private sector jobs. Obama is insane.

I absolutely agree, but the problem is that many of the poor communities that have been exploited by Obama, his ACORN thugs, and other race pimps have been told this time and again. The culture is so thoroughly permeated with the impression that the government is SUPPOSED to help them, they think that the only reason government programs haven’t worked is because corporations and rich white people have inhibited the government.

It is so obvious, but when you have race pimps like Sharpton, Jackson, and their ilk feeding the communities with propaganda, you can’t get the message across.

Even if media reported on the utter failure that government programs have been in these communities, the only conclusion that will be drawn is the government has to do more.

Perhaps someone can explain to the ‘economist’ quoted in the article that tax cuts and spending on social services can produce a small and temporary boost in spending, but won’t have much impact on economic growth. And then we can remind him that one reason that people aren’t seeing the effects of the stimulus is that most of it hasn’t been spent yet. The only effect we’ve seen is unemployment rising above even the administration’s most pessimistic estimates.

According to Wall Street Journal, your right.

Repubs and conserv media ought to expose the hardships (particularly in the minority communities) caused by Obama’s policies. This is a golden opp. to explain the failures of gov’t programs and reliance on big gov’t, and to promote self-reliance, low taxes, and limited small gov’t.

JiangxiDad on August 17, 2009 at 11:41 AM

It can’t work for several reasons. First, education, many minorities may have graduated that public high school, but in reality many can’t read and comprehend at a fifth grade level. Therefor communicating with them is purely VT or verbal. Second, welfare, since so many minorities are second and third generation welfare recipients, there’s no way you’ll get them to speak out against the “hand out” big government programs. Third, crime, the crime levels in their communities is unreal. In addition, so many more, by percentage, are in the penal system at some part of their lives. Certainly not ideal ground to grow conservative ideals

Thank you so much glad to know I didn’t imagine it, I guess we won’t be hearing much about it. This whole Obummer Admin. is really scary so I will be as involved as I can in the 2010 elections. Have a great day and God Bless America.

Fully 70% of those polled think that over the long term the stimulus package will do nothing or harm their personal financial situations. That’s 36% who think it will do nothing and another 34% who think it will harm their personal long-term economic well-being.

This parallels well with the “passion index”. Those 30% are true believers. We can shift some of the 36% if we focus on the fact that this debt will only prolong the pain, not solve it. we need to keep reminding people that all he’s done is set up a war chest for the next election cycle at the country’s expense.

You are right that the model that has been successful so far for the filthy liar in the White House breaks down when the demonization is groups. That’s why, I am sure, the bastard keeps trying to make Rush Limbaugh the GOP spokesman.

That being said, who is leading the GOP these days. I don’t mean who is running the RNC but where are the strong conservative leaders that are out there capitalizing on the filthy liar’s failures. I see few from the right doing this outside of John Boehner, Jeff Sessions, and Mitch McConnell.

The worst part, IMO, is the way the porkulus has been used as stop-gap measures to keep state employees at their jobs. That does absolutely nothing to stimulate the economy. We need to demand an immediate cessation to the Porkulus bill.

Obama Administration Motto: “Inefficiency is our most important product”.

If you think they screwed up the economy, just wait until they get hold of health care.

No shovel ready projects just ready to go?

Oooops.

‘Cept for those really neat 10 foot by 12 foot signs all along the local Interstate.

“Coming Soon! Paid for with your grandkids dollars! Something!!!”

coldwarrior on August 17, 2009 at 12:22 PM

Those “shovel ready jobs” are all to bury the bad legislative ideas Obama is failing with.

But, then Barry knows something about shovelling

$787 Billion Spent…….Where are the Jobs?
Hey Hussein, you acted reckless in spending our Money. You said it would creat jobs and/or save jobs and it has done nothing. Give us our Money Back!

BigMike252 on August 17, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Hate to say it, but thank God for the Porkulus. Had he reversed his priorities we’d be stuck with Obamacare. As bad as a cool trillion is, a sixth of the economy controlled by liberals is horrifying.
