Who are your Milk Carton Politicians?

posted at 2:26 pm on August 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier today, I noted that New Hampshire’s media had taken notice that their Congressional delegation had gone missing during the August recess, rather than hold town-hall meetings to face their constituents about the health-care reform package.  I joked that they had put Paul Hodes, Carol Shea-Porter, and Jean Shaheen on milk cartons, a reference to the admirable effort of milk producers to help find missing children.  Green Room contributor Patrick Ishmael at AIP’s blog noted that Missourians needed to put a picture of Ike Skelton on a few milk cartons, too:

The approach of Missouri represenatives to dealing with the outcry against the health care bill has run the gamut. In St. Louis, Rep. Russ Carnahan has held three disastrous public events. In Lee’s Summit, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver — no doubt influenced by the experiences of Carnahan and others — held a “tele-town hall” and a morning coffee, taking no questions from the audience, all the while insisting that “there is no health care bill” to talk about anyway.

It appears Ike Skelton has one-upped them both. He hasn’t held, and apparently might not hold, any public meetings on the matter.

About 100 people gathered outside Rep. Ike Skelton’s office in Missouri’s capital city to voice concerns about federal health care legislation.

Neither the 17-term Democratic congressman nor his staff were present at the Wednesday evening event, organized by the group Americans for Prosperity and others unhappy that Skelton hasn’t held public meetings about health care.

It seems to me that we need to start a list of Milk Carton Politicians — members of the House and Senate who go MIA when they should be meeting with their constituents to hear their concerns over the health-care overhaul, cap-and-trade, the failure of the stimulus package, and the exploding federal deficit.  Who else belongs on a milk carton?  Be sure to list them in the comments or send us e-mails so that we can ask the national media to find these lost souls.

Update: Please send them in e-mails; the comment thread has been too popular to keep up!

FRANKLIN, Aug 13 –

Congressman Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) will hold additional town hall meetings through the 7th District on Saturday, August 15th. These meetings follow three informal town halls Blackburn hosted in Nashville, Jackson and Memphis. Blackburn will also host a formal town hall in Franklin on Friday.

Additional 7th District town hall meetings will be held as follows:

It goes on to list meetings in 5 different counties.

She isn’t hiding. She even made it as convenient as possible. Of course, she doesn’t need to hide, as we know she will vote against the monstrosity. She hasn’t let me down yet. Go Marsha!

My senators are another story. Bob Corker is holding town halls and isn’t awful, but he voted to confirm Geithner and we had an email dispute about it which I will never get over. :P But Lamar Alexander has got to go. He held a telephone townhall apparently and has said protestors need to have good manners. Puh-lease! Somebody has got to run against him.

pannw on August 16, 2009 at 7:55 PM

4reds – re Dan Boren. I must be a little behind the times. Last week, he told at least two newspapers that he wasn’t going to have any town halls because he already knew what his constituents wanted. Maybe some of the pressure from his constituents got him to review his options.

Old Country Boy on August 16, 2009 at 8:00 PM

Chet Edwards (D-TX) is in hiding. However, Republican Conservative challenger Rob Curnock is having 3 Town Hall meetings. See http://www.robcurnockforcongress.com/ for dates.

Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD-2nd) is not on your list. At the last meeting of the TEA Party folks we were informed that Dutch has not held an open town hall meeting, so we will have one at his district office with or without him.

Wexler is supposed to be having a townhall meeting on Aug 20 at 1 p.m.. I called, it is open to the public – they are giving tickets to Retired People of America (not sure who they are)don’t see how he backs out.

Oh, I forgot to include Rep. Kratovil (D- MD 1st). He scheduled no town hall meetings except some for farmers issue; meetings where only farm related info was to be discussed, mostly the impact of Cap and Trade. I was at the one in Rising Sun, MD and it did deviate a bit from that, but the conversation was quickly returned to farm issues. I heard was the same at the 3 scheduled farm meetings. He has had “Congress on the Corner” meetings where there are one on one meetings with him, but most of the people who showed up last week thought they were to attend a town hall meeting, so at 2 such meetings he had to come outside and be confronted by the voters; over 100 in North East, MD where I was present; 250 reported by ABC at the one in the southern Eastern Shore near Salisbury.

Old Country Boy,

Maybe he was shamed into it….I think it odd that he is having 3 meetings in the same day so far apart. Also, I vaguely read that a republican from McAlester is going to run against him and he is having a ‘town hall meeting’. Maybe that encouraged him…not a constituent of his. I’m one of Cole’s.

4reds on August 16, 2009 at 8:19 PM

My Representative is Gabrielle Giffords and I so wish we could can her ass. She has had no town halls and refuses to have any. Emails to her office are responded to with form letters. She is a terrible Representative. I want her gone next November never to return. Little witch.

You’re very fortunate.
I have a great state rep in my district in MA – he told me he was stunned that Tierney (my congressman) wasn’t having any town hall-style meetings.

I mentioned upthread that his Republican opponent in 2010 had a rally, in front of his office. 500 people, and he still won’t schedule a meeting with a group of his constituents.

All Hawaii reps and sens are missing (all D-HI). Apparently Abercrombie had a town hall in late July before any bills were passed. He and Mazie Hirono are taking questions via the internet.

HawaiiLwyr on August 16, 2009 at 9:04 PM

Frank Kratovil D – MD

After he got his keister handed to him, he stopped having them. I’ve called his office, and his staffers are “working on his schedule”. When I ased where town hall meetings and his schedule would be posted, I was told I could give his office my email, and they would inform me if they have any town halls. When I pressed them, they said they would not be posting any events, just emailing invitations to those on the email list.

On 8/11 we had a protest in front of his Bel Air office. He was not present, and his staffers would not come out and answer questions. Only our local Fox affiliate covered the event.

The August recess is officially called the “Summer District Work Period” Any Congressman who refuses to speak with constituents is, in my opinion, absent without leave and should be run out of office for dereliction of duty.

highhopes on August 16, 2009 at 9:10 PM

Ben Nelson (D-NE) is still MIA, but according to today’s Omaha World Herald, he “is expecting to hold public meetings over the next two weeks. A schedule should be available Monday…”

My bet is an announcement that he will speak at some local business groups (Rotary, etc.), but no town-hall meetings where he would need to face questions from his voters.

huskerjeff on August 16, 2009 at 9:19 PM

I haven’t seen any town halls by Jim Inhofe (R-Senator-OK) but he probably doesn’t need one– he does have a poll on his website that shows 87% of visitors to his site are strongly opposed to Obamacare. He is probably the most conservative Senator in the Senate so we aren’t worried about how he will vote. And he is not afraid to make his positions clear. Tom Coburn got standing ovations at his town halls, I suspect Jim Inhofe would get the same if he held any.
Of course, this brings up the ugly truth that some of the representatives on your list are so deep in Obama worshippers that they don’t need to hold town halls either (NJ, VT, NY, etc.) They know how their constituents want them to vote. Their polls probably show the opposite of Inhofe’s. But I pray their numbers are plummeting with Obama’s approval ratings.

Christian Conservative on August 16, 2009 at 9:20 PM

I’ve been checking Rep Tammy Baldwin’s (D-WI) website off & on for past 2 weeks and don’t see any townhall meetings posted. She’s probably in California over this recess break. Sen Russ Feingold (D-WI) has listening sessions only in northern WI. I hope the northwooders give him an earfull.

I know people at Texas A&M who will vote against Chet Edwards if he votes for just about any form of the health care bill. And these are people employed specifically due to an Edwards earmark. No wonder he doesn’t want to talk to his constituents.

He must see that his days are numbered as a Dem representing what is certainly the most conservative large university in the US now that the conservatives have become so energized by the Socialist Joker in DC.

My guess is that in 2010 the Blue Dog will be near extinction.

classicaliberal on August 16, 2009 at 9:33 PM

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA-10) has his statement, which is pretty clear as these things go. He was one of the ‘no town hall scheduled’ guys as of last week and I’m hunting through his site to see if there is anything going on. The guy can take time out with San Fran Nan to visit the despot Asad a couple of years back, but not his own district during one of the hottest political months in recent history?

He doesn’t need a milk carton, just a clue bat applied vigorously to the head and shoulders. Yes the district is a bit towards leaning left, but this isn’t Fairfax out here beyond the beltway… still lots of farm country in the district. So I guess we don’t rate up there with tyrants… just so long as I know where I stand… there is a reason I voted for a no-name, self-running citizen over Frank Wolf last election. These incumbistani have got to go.

My liberal brother from NYC and his significant other were in town this weekend. They apparently read the NYT and believe anything it says. Their take was that all dissent was crazy radicals and that we all should be paying more in taxes to make this a reality because it is an inalienable right. God as my witness, it was an ordeal to remain civil as they spouted their leftist crap about who crazy those disrupters were at town halls.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago. She just couldn’t understand why President Obama would undermine the efforts of small business owners. “Even my Grandpa?” she asked pitifully.

I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why President Obama has rushed legislation, without allowing Congressmen to even reading it, that will hurt the backbone of the American economy, the small businessman. “And yes honey, even Grandpa is going bankrupt under the the burden of taxes and new mandates”, I was forced to say.

I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult – the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. I think my daughter could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words – nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, “Honey, I just don’t know – I don’t know what’s going on in this country anymore…”

When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, “Daddy” she said, “why are President Obama and the Democrats doing this to the country?” Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. She just fell into my arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes.

For once she had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think it’s too much, but seeing the strength in my young daughter’s voice helped me to get through.

Overhauling health-care system tops agenda at annual meeting of Canada’s doctors

By Jennifer Graham (CP) – 1 day ago

SASKATOON — The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country’s health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.

Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country – who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting – recognize that changes must be made.

When I called Dennis Cardoza (D) offices in Modesto, CA. 17th congressional district, asking when he was holding a townhall meeting, I was told he wasn’t. I asked why. They said he was busy in meetings in Washington. I said they are on recess. They said he had already held a teletown hall with 70,000 people. Wow, I missed that, even though I had written and called several times asking about the meeting. I still haven’t heard anything about it and it hasn’t been reported on the news. Add him to the milk carton.

mhrepub on August 17, 2009 at 1:41 AM

NANCY PELOSI (D-CA) should be at the very top of your list!

A phone call to Nancy’s office last week confirmed she has no meetings open to the public during the August “District Work Period.”

Of course, Nancy is much too busy with her 2 DAY WINE & DINE event for donors, to have any time left to meet with her constituents!

Here is the proof about her 2 DAY WINE & DINE:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0809/25859.html
Be sure to read both pages of the column to find out the names of the donors. Then let the donors know how you feel!

I think Congressman McNerney of California’s 11th district is AWOL as well. At least as far as face to face town hall. He had one of those telephone townhalls but those don’t count to me.

Rep. Melissa Bean (D-IL, who will meet people who pay $25)

I’m willing to have town hall meetings with anyone who’ll pay me $25. For $50 you can throw things at me.

I asked at 7:07 PM Sunday evening, 8/16, about Steve Israel, D-NY. I had not seen the post by The_Lid at 5:06 PM stating that Steve Israel is having Town Halls by invitation only and announces them only after they are over. COWARD. He knows that a very large majority of constituents oppose ObamaCare.

This is one of many reasons why Steve Israel needs to be voted out of office. He has been CORRUPTED by Washington. He talks moderate back home, but votes socialist left wing in Washington. He postures that he is for the military back home, but then votes against the troops.

Phil Byler on August 17, 2009 at 6:34 AM

Make sure you add Betty “Rubble” McCollum, MN-4.

Mr. D on August 17, 2009 at 6:44 AM

Don’t jump to conclusions about John McCain. He has announced that he opposes ObamaCare, and contrary to the speculations of some conservatives earlier this year, McCain has NOT been a broker of bipartisan bills.

Quite differently, McCain’s voting record this year is conservative and as good as any. McCain has voted AGAINST every Obama bailout bill. McCain has voted AGAINST every Obama deficit spending bill, denouncing the multi-trillion dollar deficit spending as “generational theft,” a phrase thereafter used by Sean Hannity. McCain has voted AGAINST the confirmations of tax cheat Geithner, radical pro-abortion advocate Sebellius, leftist Kagan and transnational legal theorist Koh to their respective positions in the Obama Administration. McCain voted AGAINST the confiirmation of Sotomayer to the U.S. Supreme Court. McCain has announced he is opposed to Obama’s cap and trade bill and opposed to ObamaCare.

Phil Byler on August 17, 2009 at 6:46 AM

Delaware’ congressional delegation –that would be Carper, Castle and Kaufman — will not be holding townhalls during the August recess. They said they will meet with constituents “in other kinds of forums.” Right.

BigD on August 17, 2009 at 6:54 AM

Ed Markey (D-MA) and Ted Kennedy (D-MA) will not be having any public town hall meetings. No one on Kennedy’s staff will either. Please put these two on your list. Thank you.

Ed Markey’s office said Markey will only be meeting with special interest groups this month. The public is not allowed even to listen. Hubris and cowardice on full display in MA.

virtus vero on August 17, 2009 at 7:09 AM

Kay Hagan (D-NC) needs to be added to the list.

William Teach on August 16, 2009 at 10:24 PM

She’s on it, along with several other NC’s.

right2bright on August 17, 2009 at 7:19 AM

Please note that Missy Bean is not charging $25 for a town hall. No, no, no, Sweet Melissa is having a $25 fundraiser sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce open only to businesses in good standing with that elite body. As for her constituents, well they can go pound sand. As reported by MM, Missy even changed her website to remove the words Town Hall.

Did I mention that she’s a Democrat? Or would that be redundant at this point?

BS. What the hell do you think McCain-Feingold and McCain-Kennedy were. They were a nasty old RINO siding with the far left to harm America.

For me, Mark Schauer of Michigan. Only willing to meet with his constituents by conference call (If in person, usually at Union gatherings). Just email him your name and political party and he’ll let you know if you made the list.

I live in TX-21 (Lamar Smith) and wrote Smitty today, asking him to please come out of hiding. He’s a 20 year veteran of the house in a pretty deep red district that covers a lot of area. He gets elected on name recognition only, but I expect he’d be tough to beat.

You have my “Congress Critter” listed, ….but he …sort of, kinda’, met with “a few , from each group”, privately, and claimed support for both, “for and against” Obama care.
This makes him a politician? or a hypocrite?, ….or is there a difference?

Next I suppose you will tell me John McCain didn’t suspend his pathetically stupid campaign, just when Palin was about to pull his a$$ out of the fire, and go to D.C. to get all bi-partisan and throw Free Enterprise, Capitalism, the Republican Party (Who Cares?) and the American People under the bus by signing on to stimupaloosa, thus losing the election and a great deal of our freedoms and Democracy.

Where’s John hidin? He’s on the list.
If he isn’t mouthin off somewhere he is cuttin a backroom deal to screw the conservatives, I just betcha!

Hey, another Idea! Remember the where’s Waldo canned pasta commercials? We should start, (especially those in Arizona) a “Where’s Juan” campaign. Or a where’s _____ insert your favorite missing Senate Scumbag or Congress Critter!

dhunter on August 17, 2009 at 9:57 AM

Dear dhunter re your 9:57 AM post:

No, I will not tell you that John McCain did not suspend his 2008 campaign when we were all told that a “financial crisis” had hit. But I will tell you a few things.

First, what I wrote at 6:46 AM about John McCain’s conservative voting record this year is true. If you doubt it, check the Senate record. That voting record and his announced opposition to ObamaCare are the basis for my saying that I don’t think McCain is hiding.

Second, yes, the McCain-Palin ticket (remember McCain chose Palin) came out of the September convention moving into the lead. But then the September “financial crisis” hit, and the McCain-Palin ticket almost immediately went into being behind by 7 points and stayed there until the election. Without saying that the McCain post-Convention campaign was strong (it wasn’t, other than the great videos), there were a lot of “headwinds” in the 2008 election: (i) the “financial crisis” created economic uncertainties that have favored Democrats and did in 2008; (ii) the Bush Administration bailout muddied the waters of the real difference between the parties on economics; (iii) Bush unpopularity, which was unfair but was present; (iv) Obama money that paid for false campaig advertising; (v) the Obama loving press which acted as a day in, day out prpaganda machine for Obama; and (vi) demographic changes (if the country had the same demographic makeup as 1992 and the vote split between McCain and Obama remained the same, McCain would have won). Still, had the election been about foreign policy, military matters and national security (and you would think it would be at a time of war with the radical Islamists), McCain would have won. America will pay the price for having elected a socialist appeaser community organizer instead.

My MIA is Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD). She is conveniently undergoing therapy for a broken ankle – I guess she can’t afford a wheelchair.

Carol in MD on August 17, 2009 at 10:39 AM

Dear highhopes re your post on August 17, 2009 at 7:41 AM:

No, it is not BS that McCain has NOT been the broker of bipartisan bills THIS YEAR. That is what I wrote. Some conservatives (e.g., Rick Santorum) predicted last January that McCain would be a go-between Obama and Republicans. That did NOT happen. Instead and far to the contrary, McCain has been one of the most visible critics in Congress of Obama. Two weeks ago, there was a long story in the Wall Street Journal about this.

And please do remember that as to the immigration bill, President Bush was a strong supporter of it, and that as to the campaign finance reform bill, Fred Thompson voted for it and President Bush signed it. My point is that as to immigration and campaign finance, a lot of Republicans have had to do some back tracking and rethinking.

Phil Byler on August 17, 2009 at 10:43 AM

I ahve ended up writing some posts defending McCain. My desire, however, is to focus attention on Steve Israel, D-NY, who is a missing person about health care.

scottj63 on August 17, 2009 at 10:54 AM

I will not turn this into a debate on McCain but,
at a time that , as leader of the party John McCain had the microphone and the media was dwelling on his every word,
instead of standing for Conservative, Free Market, Free Enterprise Principles he advocated responsiblity as I would say Bush did and voted for a Union, Wall Street bailout and biggest rippoff of the American taxpayer up until that point in time!
John McCain, and George Bush got rolled by the liberals as was evident by their glee in passage of the taxpayer payoff to Dem constituents and Big Banks and Investment Firms!

He stood with the Liberals and the America people lost! BIG TIME!
