Who are your Milk Carton Politicians?

posted at 2:26 pm on August 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier today, I noted that New Hampshire’s media had taken notice that their Congressional delegation had gone missing during the August recess, rather than hold town-hall meetings to face their constituents about the health-care reform package.  I joked that they had put Paul Hodes, Carol Shea-Porter, and Jean Shaheen on milk cartons, a reference to the admirable effort of milk producers to help find missing children.  Green Room contributor Patrick Ishmael at AIP’s blog noted that Missourians needed to put a picture of Ike Skelton on a few milk cartons, too:

The approach of Missouri represenatives to dealing with the outcry against the health care bill has run the gamut. In St. Louis, Rep. Russ Carnahan has held three disastrous public events. In Lee’s Summit, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver — no doubt influenced by the experiences of Carnahan and others — held a “tele-town hall” and a morning coffee, taking no questions from the audience, all the while insisting that “there is no health care bill” to talk about anyway.

It appears Ike Skelton has one-upped them both. He hasn’t held, and apparently might not hold, any public meetings on the matter.

About 100 people gathered outside Rep. Ike Skelton’s office in Missouri’s capital city to voice concerns about federal health care legislation.

Neither the 17-term Democratic congressman nor his staff were present at the Wednesday evening event, organized by the group Americans for Prosperity and others unhappy that Skelton hasn’t held public meetings about health care.

It seems to me that we need to start a list of Milk Carton Politicians — members of the House and Senate who go MIA when they should be meeting with their constituents to hear their concerns over the health-care overhaul, cap-and-trade, the failure of the stimulus package, and the exploding federal deficit.  Who else belongs on a milk carton?  Be sure to list them in the comments or send us e-mails so that we can ask the national media to find these lost souls.

Update: Please send them in e-mails; the comment thread has been too popular to keep up!

You forgot to include Rep. Dan Boren (2d dist OK) who says he doesn’t need to hold town halls because he already knows what his consitiuents want. He can lie like the other Boren in his family (David, ex senator, pres of OU). I think that comes natural to Dems. I, and everybody else in second district, know he is lying or incredibly dumb. If he knows that his constituents are aginst Obamacare, he could hold town meetings and agree with them. He could also state his position publically and his constituents would know whether he knew what they wanted. No matter what he eventually does, I will always remember his cowardice. By the way, all the Repubs , including Coburn, are holding town meetings. I will state positivally that the Borens are the most over-rated family in Oklahoma. I will personally donate to anyone who will run against this POS, and I’m an independent.

I do not see my special little congressman, the culprit himself….Waxman. He is no where to be found in town. Not one Townhall that I can find!

I want to know if all states have a re-call process for Senators and Congressmen. If so, we should start a recall process in every single state for anyone that votes for Obamacare not up for re-election in 2010. This way we truly can have a referendum and throw the them out if they do not want to represent our wishes.

Thursday, Bill hosted a rally in front of Tierney’s office. 500 well-behaved protesters showed up. Story here.

I was going to add Rep. Gary Peters D MI. He won’t even return emails or phone calls. This guy has barely begun his first term and he’s a no show.

Our local Republican State Rep. is going to have a Town Hall since Gary Peters is too chicken. I sent an email to Peters letting him know about the State Rep holding a Town Hall on health care and that while I know our state rep can’t have any impact on a bill before the US House, it’s possible that he may have impact on US House bills in the future.

I want Gary Peters to know that he should be a one term Representative.

The state of Michigan did that for two days in July around the 4th of July holiday and then they understaffed places like the Dept. of State office (our DMV basically) on the first day back, so you walk in and you’re #89 and they’re only on #18 – and it took them 25 minutes to get to 21 (don’t know why we even stayed that long).

Mr. Morrissey – Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) is having a town hall on 8/20 @ 1:00 at the South County Civic Center in Boca Raton. I called his office to try to submit a question, and was told that all questions had to be submitted to the group organizing (I thought that’s what tax dollars were for) the event, the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans, or something like that. I went to the group’s website which robustly advocated for the contradiction-in-terms Employee Free Choice Act, so a non-partisan group this is not.

I called the contact number Wexler’s assistant gave me, and it was some dude’s voicemail, seemed like a mobile number. This is so bootleg I can’t believe it. I’ll definitely be at the event, I hope I have the privilege of asking a question (sarc) of my oh-so-busy Representative. I really think 2010 is gonna be a big year for conservative ideas vis-a-vis the elections. Keep up the great work, HA.

He had a “tele-townhall” on July 31st and he spoke to some citizens outside a Starbucks (a few dozen people) two weeks ago but he has scheduled nothing, no regular meetings, for the constituents of his district.

Listening to the “tele-townhall” it’s all platitudes and democrat talking points. No challenges, mostly softball questions. Why wouldn’t they be when you can screen the questions? “Tele-townhalls” are a cop out.

Have a real meeting Mr. Rodriguez!

Quotes:

Rep. Jean Schmidt, a Miami Township Republican, isn’t planning any town hall events this month, but she will be talking to constituents, said her spokesman, Bruce Pfaff.

She’s my rep. To her credit, she took a lot of grief for reaming Murtha a couple of years ago.

House Republican Leader John Boehner, of West Chester, has no town hall meetings or similar events scheduled, spokesman Don Seymour said.

Disappointing.

Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, also has no town halls or events scheduled, spokeswoman Garrett Silverman said.

Sigh. Voino sucks.

Rep Ben Chandler D-Ky. is hiding from his voters by refusing to have open meetings. One meeting was held where questions and comments were directed to an empty suit sitting on a chair in the center of the room. The chair’s answers were about as helpful as Chandler has been to his constituents! A Play for Play meeting is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17 for a fee of $25. Talking to the empty suit would be just as helpful and a sight cheaper! The only way to deal with this jerk is to replace him!

Marco on August 16, 2009 at 5:08 PM

Massrighty – I simply don’t have the time to do that. I’m sure you won’t be able to submit questions at the event, but I don’t think he’s gonna have a great meeting. A lot of people in southern Palm Beach County aren’t happy with how things are going.

As an investment advisor that has numerous clients over 60 (“Palm Beach Old Money”), I can tell you some aren’t happy about Obama talking out of both sides of his mouth on Israel, and now the health care end-of-life provision has made him even less popular. There are many independents who are being turned off by Obama, simply because what he proposes are unsustainable platitudinous pies-in-the-sky. Reason will be heard in American politics soon!

I think they forced him to rent a house down here somewhere but his primary residence remains in MD. For tax reasons. Isn’t that precious?

This guy up until now has been Teflon coated. Mainly because his constituencies are senior citizens and Jewish folks. I have received word Lousenberg & racist Menendez are all for the bill as is without senate changes.

If the people who elected these “lost souls” have any brains, they will clean house in 2010 and 2012. Otherwise they deserve what they get…. no representation.

ultracon on August 16, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Add Evan Bayh (D-IN) to the carton.

Interesting read……

What happens when ACORN and OFA send you an email invitation to meet with your senator during the August recess?

Hoosiers should say ‘Bye, Bayh’ in 2010

Congresswoman Betty McCollum – 4th District – Minnesota. St Paul and eastside.
I’m stuck in her district, just a few blocks from Michele’s district. Organized protests throughout the state on the 14th had a good turnout. I hadn’t heard of it, but dozens showed up at McCollum’s office to find her out.
Ellison’s protest found a thug trying to deter protesters, but police were called in to deter him. (imagine that)
I see Oberstar’s name on the list above. He would probably demand a special townhall tax in order to meet with him.
Anyway, Betty has been pretty much m.i.a. since July, other than a couple small photo ops.

Ha Ha good one KWR. Nice to see we have an activist down at the southernmost point of the US.
I worked the polls in 04 up in broward county. I had an altercation with out of town lawyers(boston) and had them ejected from the polling place. I also attended a Gathering of Eagles in DC in 07 and worked security as an arbitrator. There is nothing to compare with getting active in the political process for your country even in a small way. Now when you think about what our military does WOW off the charts.

sonnyspats1 on August 16, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Almost forgot. McCollum is a (D)

oakpack on August 16, 2009 at 6:07 PM

Also, another Hall of Shame participant from Indiana, Brad Ellsworth (D-Corn).

He’s avoiding townhalls but meeting with constituents in 15 minute intervals. Stay classy.

Broward County… Now there’s an area that has “Changed”. My mother in law worked the polls in 2008. Tough room.

Ron Klein – D (FL) should be on the list. I wonder if anyone looked for Wexler in Maryland???

Let’s not forget Dennis Cardoza (D-CA) who won’t even be in his district the entirety of the recess!

The interesting part of the preceding coments is that they must all be true. If not, then some staff member or congress critter (think polecat) would have rebutted the and told us all that there will be open town halls.

Welllll! Looky there Senator John McCain!
I suppose the Good Old Boy already knows what his constituents want, or doesn’t give a damn!
I hope he hasn’t suspended his townhalls to return to D.C. to fight, fight, fight!
In McCains world that means huddling up with his good friends across the isle to find common ground and screw the common constituent!
Or are John and Lindsey Grahamnasty just layin low waiting for Pinnochios’ amnesty bill to surface so he can exhibit his bi-partisanship credes.

Dont know if these were mentioned yet.

Both of my senatorbastards are not holding town halls: [Bride of] Chucky Schumer and Kristin Gillibrand, both (D-NY).

My representativebastard is only holding telephone town halls (so you can’t see his lying eyes). His name is Joseph Crowley (D-NY).

RickZ on August 16, 2009 at 6:59 PM

Rep. Don Young of Alaska is not on the list even though he hasn’t held any townhall meetings- but please continue to cut him some slack as his wife passed away this last week. He would never vote for government healthcare anyway.

shirk on August 16, 2009 at 7:01 PM

Rep. Nita Lowey D-NY 18th district held a tele townhall at 6 P.M. Thursday while everyone was in the middle of rush hour or getting dinner ready. BTW she is one of the richest members of Congress.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand D-NY who along with our esteemed senior Senator Chucky Cheese Schumer has no townhall scheduled.

Feel like a lost soul in ultra liberal NY.

What about Steve Israel-Democrat-New York (Long Island)? I e-mailed his office about whether he was going to hold any Town Hall meetings, and I never received a response.

Phil Byler on August 16, 2009 at 7:07 PM

Not sure if Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) deserves scorn on this account. I have a business address in her district and get regular communications from her office on issues including health care. I recall notices for some local public meetings earlier this year on the subject too. She and her staff seem to be pretty thoughtful and solicit input with online polls and such.

MRegine on August 16, 2009 at 7:07 PM

Solomon Ortiz is holding a controlled conference call. I don’t know if that is list-worthy, but it smells like cowardice to me.

I’m stuck in her district, just a few blocks from Michele’s district.

Ask if Michelle B can annex your block for her district. Tell them you feel disenfranchised by a no-show. Worth a letter to the Star Trib

Don’t forget “Blue Dog” Jim Matheson from Utah. He is running nothing but tele-townhalls that he can control.

Lady Logician on August 16, 2009 at 7:14 PM

Don’t know how many have done this, but Harry Mitchell has a detailed health care survey on his web site. This allows him to collect much more information about what the people in his district think than a town hall. He is one of the bluer blue dogs, having voted against the budget, cap and tax, and extending the cash for clunkers. He is being careful as this is J.D. Hayworth’s old district.

Not crazy about demeaning this medium for finding missing children to try and embarrass these unembarrassable half-wits.

curved space on August 16, 2009 at 3:40 PM

They stopped doing it years ago because it frightened children.

Ed Morrissey on August 16, 2009 at 3:51 PM

Didn’t know that. Haven’t bought a half-gallon in decades. It’s gallons or nothing these days.

The pols are still unembarrassable half-wits, however. Only when they see their opportunities for graft seats in danger do they react. Voter passion needs to overcome party money and support, so if this milk-carton cultural artifact helps keep the pressure on then ge-o-fer-it.

curved space on August 16, 2009 at 7:19 PM

Old Country Boy,
Hope this is not a repeat……
Agree that the Boren’s are pretty worthless , but Dan Boren WILL be holding 3 town hall meetings. They are all scheduled for Tue. and will be held 8am Mcalester, 11:30 Muskogee, 3pm Pryor. It is on newsok’s site. Better stay off the Interstates that day….The buses will be rolling BIG time. If you go be careful out there.
