Who are your Milk Carton Politicians?

posted at 2:26 pm on August 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier today, I noted that New Hampshire’s media had taken notice that their Congressional delegation had gone missing during the August recess, rather than hold town-hall meetings to face their constituents about the health-care reform package.  I joked that they had put Paul Hodes, Carol Shea-Porter, and Jean Shaheen on milk cartons, a reference to the admirable effort of milk producers to help find missing children.  Green Room contributor Patrick Ishmael at AIP’s blog noted that Missourians needed to put a picture of Ike Skelton on a few milk cartons, too:

The approach of Missouri represenatives to dealing with the outcry against the health care bill has run the gamut. In St. Louis, Rep. Russ Carnahan has held three disastrous public events. In Lee’s Summit, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver — no doubt influenced by the experiences of Carnahan and others — held a “tele-town hall” and a morning coffee, taking no questions from the audience, all the while insisting that “there is no health care bill” to talk about anyway.

It appears Ike Skelton has one-upped them both. He hasn’t held, and apparently might not hold, any public meetings on the matter.

About 100 people gathered outside Rep. Ike Skelton’s office in Missouri’s capital city to voice concerns about federal health care legislation.

Neither the 17-term Democratic congressman nor his staff were present at the Wednesday evening event, organized by the group Americans for Prosperity and others unhappy that Skelton hasn’t held public meetings about health care.

It seems to me that we need to start a list of Milk Carton Politicians — members of the House and Senate who go MIA when they should be meeting with their constituents to hear their concerns over the health-care overhaul, cap-and-trade, the failure of the stimulus package, and the exploding federal deficit.  Who else belongs on a milk carton?  Be sure to list them in the comments or send us e-mails so that we can ask the national media to find these lost souls.

Update: Please send them in e-mails; the comment thread has been too popular to keep up!

Here’s what we have so far:

That these members of the Politburo on the Potomac refuse to meet with their constituents concerning as big an issue as healthcare reform is udderly ridiculous.

Robert Wexler weasel extraordinare chair of Obama’s Florida campaign spent the election lying to seniors and Jewish constituents about Obama. Has been MIA from the district all year. ALL YEAR. MIA.

I can give you three off the top of my head.

Sen. Casey (D-PA)

Dennis Moore, (D KS) He’s gone on one morning news show, and cancelled his Sept. 1 townhall, (talk about a chicken- he was waiting to see how everyone else’s shook out) and now claims to be setting up phone townhalls. Oh- he also claims to be getting death threats, which is ridiculous in this community, he just doesn’t want to face us.

I guarantee you he will be gone in 2010.

Hey Hot Air……….stop picking on these Pols………didn’t you hear Rahm Rambo Emmanuel say that The Messiah can’t waste a good crisis? Well……….these Dems don’t work for “the people”…………they work for Rahm (and Rezko, and Rev. Progressives KNOW what’s good for all you dumb Rednecks out there – and they don’t have to “meet” with their “constituents” – Rahm and The Messiah and Michelle “This is the First Time I’ve been proud of Kenya….excuse me, I mean My Country” give the orders around here Hot Air….just remember that! Wexler Socialist Weasel

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 17, 2009

(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler released the following statement in response to reports of a protest scheduled at his Boca Raton office this afternoon:

“I have been informed that there will be a second protest at my Boca Raton office by those opposed to health care reform. I welcome the input and deeply respect the right of people to express their views. But let me be clear, I will not back away from my unequivocal commitment to delivering comprehensive health care reform. The status quo is totally unacceptable and will strangle our economy if we do nothing.

Instead, we must deliver universal health care – with a robust public option – that strengthens Medicare, allows Americans to keep their current insurance if they wish, and ultimately drives down costs for all Americans.”

Slick Rick has two townhalls scheduled for next week but they’re both slated to start at 9:00 am so that people who have jobs won’t be able to attend. The only attendees will be Slick Rick’s core supporters of constituents who get government checks in their mailboxes. They’ll tell him what a great job he’s doing and how wonderful he is and then he’ll head back to D.C. and vote in lockstep with Fancy Nancy and Bawney Fwank.

The disconnect here is that most politicians believe they were elected because of their own values, principles, and agendas, rather than those of their constituents. The fact of their election, they believe, is an endorsement of all of their ideas. They really don’t have a sense that they are representing others — and should thus listen to what those others have to say — but rather that they have been chosen to act only in accordance with their own agendas. That they represent people back home is entirely incidental to what these people see as their role in government. They see themselves as forces of one, infused with the wisdom of the ages, because, after all, they won.

…but the brave man did manage to send a letter to the Asbury Park Press after their editorial calling for a open public forum on health care issues.

So dissapointed in the “Republicans” in this state.

Jerome Horwitz on August 16, 2009 at 3:14 PM

If the August 2009 townhalls have proved one thing, it’s the utter arrogance and disdain for the America people held by these congressional clunkers. If you learn nothing else, learn this.

They all need to be traded in in 2010. Don’t expect much in trade.

Let’s add Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT} She has been hiding and plans nothing as to Public Meetings. This old horse does not care about anything but pork. She always wins her seat by large margins so what can one expect.

Steney Hoyer, the coward is missing. I’m in his district and I keep calling and they keep telling me that he’s trying to find a place to hold it. I volunteered to help if steney needed help.

Rep. Norm Dicks (D-WA) is MIA. I wrote to him and asked when he’s holding townhalls and he sent back a form letter saying that he values our input, but the final version of the bill is incomplete.

WTF?

If he “values” our input, why the hell won’t he listen to us via a townhall so the bill can be modified according to said input?

Frakking coward!

Rep. Travis Childers (D-MS), who ran as one of the people, is now running from the people.

I kept trying to call Senator Hillary’s office…

then I realized she’s been neutralized by Obama, in Africa doing nothing.

blatantblue on August 16, 2009 at 3:20 PM

Chet Edwards (D-TX) isn’t showing up – and the Republican likely to run against him at the next election is having a townhall meeting in his stead.

I recommend others do the same thing – if these spineless wonders won’t meet with their constituents, maybe the person who would like to replace them should take this as an opportunity to have a meeting and introduce themselves to the voters and hear what they have to say.

Some solid campaign material presenting itself here, folks.

Midas on August 16, 2009 at 3:20 PM

Mike Rogers R-AL had a townhall scheduled for 8/25 and cancelled. No one has seen him anywhere. Jim Oberstar (D- MN)will only talk about bike paths not healthcare.

I like that Republican candidates hold town halls! Hmm I like it.

sonnyspats1 on August 16, 2009 at 3:23 PM

Sen. Jack Reed and Rep. Patrick Kennedy, both (D-RI)

And Patrick is out of rehab, so there’s really no excuse.

Anyone have an estimate for the volume of tar and feathers required for these folks? Maybe we can get a discount if we get it in bulk, or get it donated?

ted c on August 16, 2009 at 3:24 PM

I’d love to see a few YouTube videos with a lot of constituents from these districts having their own townhalls either with a brick wall or a box of rocks–since that’s how the behavior that their representative is displaying appears.

ted c on August 16, 2009 at 3:25 PM

Wrote letters (3 weeks ago) to Senators Kyl (R-AZ), McCain (R-AZ) and House Critter KirkPatrick (D-AZ). No Response yet. I am attending a rally hosted by Code Blue on the 22nd in front of KirkPatrick’s Prescott office. She won’t be there.

Roland Burris (Blagojevich-IL) was caught sneaking into Rev. Wright’s Trinity United “Church” last Friday. No reporters or cameras allowed. Business as usual in the “Land of Lincoln.”

MayorDaley on August 16, 2009 at 3:27 PM

“Madam” Rep Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) is MIA – one of the most progressives in the House. But, she did allegedly have a conference call with her “supporters” – what a joke.

Alibali on August 16, 2009 at 3:28 PM

Well, I’ve been looking, maybe they keep the town halls quiet, but I’d have to add Rep. Olver (MA) Rep. Neal (MA), John Francois Heinz-Kerry (MA).

I guess Neal was in Worcester for a meeting (oddly enough it’s not in his district).

PS Do I need to add the D?

If we run out of milk to fill the cartons, which looks likely at this point, might I suggest filling them with another kind of bovine production.
