Right Online: Live coverage at C-SPAN

posted at 9:50 am on August 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Output will be a little light this morning, but I have a great excuse: I’m currently backstage at the Right Online conference, sponsored by Americans for Prosperity Foundation.  Today’s keynote speeches are already being broadcast live by C-SPAN through their webstreaming (and perhaps on television).  Be sure to watch the Right’s best and brightest address the throngs of activists at the ROL conference.  I’ll speak at 11 am ET, and Michelle Malkin will follow shortly afterward.

After lunch, I’ll have an interview with the producers of Not Evil, Just Wrong, a terrific film screened at the conference last night.  Keep checking back for more!

Congratulations, finally getting noticed by the left and on one of their premier outlets.

I know you and Michelle will not let U.S. down and will give CSPAN something to think of.

Keep up the great work, and our sincerest apologies to the left for the rash of negative calls they will certainly receive from their own kind.

Jeff2161 on August 15, 2009 at 10:24 AM

Light posting day; better give my Bozeman townhall report on this thread…

Huge turn-out considering Montana is a rural state with a population around 1-M. I’m guessing at a couple of thousand, maybe more. Completely staged event, Obama-Tester-Baucus should be ashamed, but of coarse they won’t be.

Can’t tell you much “first hand” about the actual event, as we couldn’t get in. I did talk to several people who did get in, and this is the short version of what they had to say.

Not much of a townhall, as Obama took up much of the time with a campaign speech. The room was packed with Obama supporters, and the few questions Obama did take appeared to be staged. The audience was very polite at all times. The event was not much different from a typical campaign stop. It was very clear that Obama doesn’t have a plan of his own, that a solid plan has yet to present itself. No real new information came from this phony townhall, just another Obama speech about his obsession with socialized health care.

Outside and on the streets, the protests were peaceful and really well done. Great signs created by people from all walks of life. Several (hundreds) of Democrats were protesting along with the rest of us. Lots of elderly folks very worried about this deal, and loudly voicing their distrust for this government. Lots of people talking about dictatorship and out of control big brother bullshit taking place with this President. Huge anger towards Pelosi; in fact, I’d say this crowd was angrier at Pelosi than anybody else. One guy had a sign calling Pelosi the she-devil. No argument on that one!

Twas a great day spent in a beautiful city in the mountains of Montana. American pride was on display; American freedom of speech & expression was on display; American fear of big brother was on display. Twas a great day spent with great Americans.

Jeff2161 on August 15, 2009 at 10:27 AM

On CSPAN I’m getting the dinner from last night. How do I get the live stream…?

katy on August 15, 2009 at 10:28 AM

Given:

A) Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, et. al. consider people that attend and run groups like this promote racism, Hitler, Nazis, hate speech, etc.
B) C-SPAN is broadcast these groups and people.
C) C-SPAN is government funded.

Therefore (in the Dem Leadership view):

D) The government is sponsoring racism, Hitler, Nazis, hate speech, etc.

OT from CNN:If Hamas is blowing up your house because you’re too extreme for them, you might be going just a tad too far.

Jeff2161 on August 15, 2009 at 10:53 AM

Such was the fate of Sheikh Abu al-Nour al-Maqdessi, the leader of a radical Islamist movement in Gaza called the Soldiers of the Partisans of God. On Friday, the group declared an Islamic emirate in Gaza with al-Maqdessi as its leader and called on Muslims to send weapons and fighters to use in attacks on Jews. The announcement sparked clashes with Hamas, whose spokesman called them “outlaws” who were “terrorizing the country and attacking civilians.”
HAMAS against terror and civilian attacks ?

d1carter on August 15, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Loved the speech, Ed. Unalienable Rights is one of my favorite subjects of discussion… and, as Americans, we don’t talk about it nearly often enough. You gave an impassioned commentary, so much so that you literally paced your way out of the shot at one point :), but I can’t blame you… the subject is deserving of passion.

Liberals seem to believe that rights can be arbitrarily defined in Washington, that there should be no conflict between the “negative rights” our founders guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution and the “positive rights” they’d like to invent. They don’t understand that these two conditions cannot coexist, that to allow confiscatory government policy does NOT impinge upon the rights of just some of us, but of all.

The founders knew that what a government can give TO it’s citizens, it can certainly take away FROM them. They’d seen it firsthand. And so they designed a form of government in which ‘We the People’ would be sovereign, with no king, no tyrant above us. Each of us are endowed with certain unalienable rights, natural rights, recognized in observance of our humanity. As human beings, we can speak, therefore we have a right to. We can make weapons, so we have the right to keep them. Because we’re human animals, we’re clever enough to produce and defend what is needed to perpetuate our own survival, so we have the right to do that, to make and keep our own property.

What we don’t have the right to do, is to impede another citizen from the exercise of HIS natural rights. To do so would be to rise above the sovereign citizen and to tyrannize him as if we were a king, a usurpation of power. And as we tear our fellow citizen down, depriving him of his sovereignty… we do the same to ourselves! We are no longer our own king, because we’ve abdicated our own right to sovereignty by depriving our fellow sovereign citizen. The vacuum is then filled by what few can rise by right of might.

Certainly, things like healthcare and education for all citizens are laudable goals for a benevolent society. But, we don’t have to throw the baby out with the bathwater in order to accomplish them. We don’t have to walk away from the founding principles or trash our Constitution.

Physicists ask very basic questions in order to provide us with complex answers… “Why does the apple fall from the tree? Why doesn’t it float or move sideways?” And from a simple question like that, we discover gravity.

Simple questions, like “Why did the founders choose to list property rights as the first mention of rights in the U.S. Constitution? can lead us to complex answers while we’re dealing with subjects like healthcare.

Great speech, Ed. :)
