Facing health-care oblivion, the left finally wonders: “Who really is Barack Obama?”
posted at 5:30 pm on August 15, 2009 by Patrick Ishmael
Good question. If you accepted the formulation made by Kathleen Parker, stalwart and standard-bearing conservative, you’d think he was a “pragmatist” in “socialist times” — a smooth operator beholden to none, acting decisively and in accordance with what the “times” demand. Namely, socialism.
How’s that pragmatic socialist thing working out for the Left?
Well, let’s just say that being mentioned in the same breath as Dick Cheney isn’t quite the change BO would be looking for. Enter Greg Palast, who — after lambasting Obama for striking a secret deal with pharmaceutical companies that would, by his calculations, save a whopping 2% on the drugs Americans buy — wonders:
What else went down in Obama’s drug deal? To find out, I called C-SPAN to get a copy of the videotape of the meeting with the drug companies. I was surprised to find they didn’t have such a tape despite the President’s campaign promise, right there on CNN in January 2008, “These negotiations will be on C-SPAN.”
This puzzled me. When Dick Cheney was caught having secret meetings with oil companies to discuss Bush’s Energy Bill, we denounced the hugger-muggers as a case of foxes in the henhouse.
Cheney’s secret meetings with lobbyists and industry bigshots were creepy and nasty and evil.
But the Obama crew’s secret meetings with lobbyists and industry bigshots were, the President assures us, in the public interest.
We know Cheney’s secret confabs were shady and corrupt because Cheney scowled out the side of his mouth.
Obama grins in your face.
See the difference?
Yup. It’s heart-ache.
Take it away, Michael Brenner.
Let’s face the harsh reality — Obama has blown health care reform, big time. The opportunity of a lifetime has been squandered. The most recent revelations about backroom deals with Pharma and the other vendors of medical services drops the curtain on any hope of serious change in our costly and inefficient non-system. This is a painful admission to make. Not only does the country remain handicapped by grossly sub-par arrangements for health delivery, we also are burdened with a president who has been discredited as a progressive dedicated to a betterment of how we conduct public business….
It is Barack Obama who is to blame for this. For months, he stayed aloof from the out-of-control Congressional maneuvering based on a strange belief in some kind of bipartisan collective will emerging by osmosis. He never leaned the weight of his person and his office to elements of reform that has been touting as candidate and then President. He deceived the country by pursuing secret talks with the very lobbies who are the heart of disgraceful national health care situation. He entered into deals that were weighted heavily in their selfish interest rather than the national interest. In short, we have gotten from him the antithesis of what we were promised and expected — in the substance and process of policy both. We have instead a conventionally minded politician overly respectful of the status quo and deferential to those who control and profit from it, A man with no apparent fixed convictions.
That last part may be a little too harsh, because it’s clear that there’s at least one thing Barack Obama is fully and fixatedly convinced of: himself. The “opportunity of a lifetime” in health care is, of course, two-fold, because while there’s an ideological opportunity here for the Left to remake the health system — and like it or not, they think for the better — there also emerged a likely divergent political opportunity for Barack Obama to lasso a powerful interest group in the process. Two roads, one leading to Chicago-style politics, with a choice making all the difference.
And that’s the problem for everyone, Right and Left. It’s not “pragmatism” that drives Barack Obama’s agenda. It’s personal, political opportunism, cloaked and advanced in Leftist ideology insofar as it advances the President’s perpetual cult of personality. I don’t doubt that as a disciple of Saul Alinsky, follower of Jeremiah Wright, and colleague of Bill Ayres and Bernadine Dohrn, Obama holds the values of the finge Left. We see that clearly enough in his voting record and rhetoric. But when it comes to the hard choices, Obama is out for Number One, and if that takes saving a piddly 2% on drugs to reward pharmaceuticals for their ObamaCare support and indenture them to an Obama re-election bid, then that’s exactly what he’s going to do — even if he has to bankrupt America in the process, which the bills being contemplated in the House and Senate no doubt would do even without the pharma deal. With a true statesman missing at 1600 Pennsylvania, the health care bill has floundered badly, bearing with it a poisonous and destructive backlash against the American people among Obama hardliners in Congress — a reaction perhaps unparalleled in recent history in its contempt for the American people. It’s a tone fully of the President’s making and against which the President has spent little, if any, political capital to tamp down.
And yet, it’s but a symptom of the problem. The fact is the President has lent little to the cause of “reform” beyond the cache of his name, and given the debacles that are the stimulus, cap-and-trade, Cash for Clunkers, and others, the Congress certainly hasn’t filled the vacuum left by Obama’s absence of leadership. So long as Obama gets the accolades, the tribute, the leverage, or all three, the details can be worked out among the Congressional line workers and lobbyists. Rest assured that he’ll be there at the end to slap on a shiny Obama label, regardless of how costly, inefficient, and otherwise monstrous the underlying product might be (so long as it doesn’t expire before 2012.)
And so, here we are. No real reform, no real cost savings, no leadership, lots of new debt, at least one industry expecting a big payout for its support, at least one President expecting a big payback for his brand, and at least one country picking up the tab as the most expensive political theater in world history, serving the most expensive political celebrity of our time, goes on, and on, and on…
Which brings us back to the question posed in the headline:
Who really is Barack Obama?
Isn’t it obvious?
Update (AP): As a footnote to Patrick’s post, note that The One’s lackeys aren’t even denying a secret deal with the pharmaceutical industry anymore. Via Powerline, watch dinsinformation agent Linda Douglass spin:
BLITZER: Did PhRMA, in exchange, make a promise of $150 million to pay for advertising to help the president’s plan go forward?
DOUGLASS: What — what you have, Wolf, is this deal that is $80 billion. And we are very pleased, obviously, that — that the pharmaceutical industry agrees with us, that there’s an urgent need for comprehensive health insurance reform that’s going to protect Americans from unfair rules, from rising costs. They agree with that. They’ve agreed with it from the beginning. That’s why they came to us and we worked out this agreement with the pharmaceutical industry. And they’re supporting health reform legislation. And that is good for the country.
BLITZER: So is part of the deal that they would support this legislation, go forward with $150 million in advertising?
DOUGLASS: You know, Wolf, part of the agreement here is that we’re all going to work together to bring comprehensive health reform. I mean, clearly, the pharmaceutical industry said we are going to support comprehensive health reform. And that’s what they’re doing.

That is, come in at 10, lunch at 11, back at 1:30, coffee break at 3:15, gone by 4….
Somehow, I don’t see this as a good way to improve health care…

Hey, that’s not fair. Obama loves work. He can watch it all day long.

To be exact:
“Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.”
I think that might just backfire on The One.
Now that more people are involved and informed, they see just how big a mistake electing this guy really was.

And the point of the Joker poster was probably that line: There are some people who just want to see the world burn.
If Dick Morris is right, and on this since it is not in Clinton vendetta mode I think he is, Obama knows he is not aiming for re-election but to truly remake things just how he thinks they should be. Its about his imprint on things… about him… but in a way that is horrific beyond all doubt.
Some people really do just want to see the world burn.

Well after all, Barack Obama, he’s an ordinary socialist fascist man,
Who desires nothing more than an ordinary chance,
To make all people live exactly as he likes, and do precisely what he wants…
An average socialist fascist man is he, of no especially clever whim,
Who likes to control everyone’s life, free of strife
With everyone supinely doing whatever he thinks is best, for him
Well… just an ordinary socialistic fascist man…
BUT!
Let some protesters be allowed to speak out against his grand controlling schemes and his serenity is through,

Here is a great article about who Obama really is:
http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/386abhgm.asp
It is from a year ago.
Part of the article:
“Important though it is to Obama, the crime issue runs a distant second to his deepest passion: social welfare legislation. “Big government liberal,” “redistributionist”-call him what you like, Obama’s fondest hope is to lead America into another war on poverty.
Obama’s overarching political program can be described as “incremental radicalism.” On health care, for example, his long-term strategy in Illinois was no secret. He repeatedly proposed a state constitutional amendment mandating universal health care.
Prior to the 2002 budget crisis, Obama’s plan was to use the windfall tobacco settlement to finance the transition to the new system. That would have effectively hidden the huge cost of universal care from the taxpayer until it was too late.
Yet Obama touted his many tiny expansions of government-funded health care as baby steps along the path to his goal. The same strategy will likely be practiced-if more subtly-on other issues.
Obama takes baby-steps when he has to, but in a favorable legislative environment, Obama’s redistributionist impulses will have free rein, and a budget-busting war on poverty (not to mention entitlement spending) will surely rise again.”

Now, I still think El Presidente is a hardcore ideologue who has nothing but contempt for our country but that doesn´t mean he´s effective once the campaign is over. However, it does mean he will never be honest, bipartisan or a uniter.

The statist had to quicken his pace to takeover healthcare. He has had to expose his flanks. Virtually no one has seen socialism in this country until it sped up. That should be an object lesson for now and forever. It has always been here, but slithered in the grass until now. It is now up and running and we need to be swingining axes at it both now and forever. We need to salt the ground it covers, we need to smother it where it lives. We need to rise and defeat this enemy right where it stands. The statist liberal and his socialist policies are old, they are not new–the only new thing about them now is that they are clearly revealed and the Great Awakening is occurring.
The statist liberal and socialist agenda will be defeated. We will smash it with the hammer of freedom and upon the anvil of liberty. It is now clearly a target upon which you can fix your sights. Read Ephesians 6:10-20, fix your armor, unsheath your sword, and wipe the sweat from your brow—for our vanguard is closing within striking distance, and our vanguard of Spartans shall not miss.

As I have been saying since last year; Barack Hussein Obama (aka Barry Soetero) is a person whom will coerce and propagandize any issue to get his desired result. And the media is in full out mode to coerce, intimidate, lie, cheat, steal, threaten, and vilify, anyone whom stands in their way to serve as a conditioned soldier for their politics.
Obama, and his pandering media, are on a steadfast march, to Socialize and nationalize our entire country.
They are incorporating the “abuse of reason” to attack the present state of debate.
The dichotomy cannot be more clear; Either you are a soldier of Obama, or you are a soldier of freedom.
We need to keep the U.S. Government out of any more involvement, in the peoples healthcare.
Period.

The entire cost of covering uninsured American Citizens could be realized by requiring Medicare, the largest consumer of drugs and devices, to demand it receive the best price offered anywhere in the world. This is not socialism, it is the highest order of capitalism: a quantity discount. Drug companies view America as the market that must repay the cost of drug development and approval. The rest of the world is viewed as gravy. Americans, who pay retail, are subsidizing the socialized plans in developed Nations that only work because they are able to buy drugs cheaper than we do. The cost of drugs needs to be distributed over the entire world, not just to a bent over America which cannot afford to subsidize the world anymore.

So we have decieded to start electing Presidents like we buy appliances. This is laughable, we elect him on his sleek styling and fancy talk and only now that our manufacturers standard one year warrenty is almost up we decied to take a look at substance and start to ask who he is. Next thing you know some prominent columnist is going to “discover” that the country is bankrupt and rolling in more debt than we will ever pay back in our or our childerens lifetime.

To understand who is Obama, you must first understand what is Obama.

Don,t know what it means .Fox news just had a news alert that said Obama would except a health care bill with out a public option .Is this a good thing or makes no difference?

I wonder if the CBO could do a cost/benefit analysis on the first six months? Hours spent actually working at his desk in the White House vs. hours spent campaigning for himself or others (including travel time). Let’s not forget what we pay him, his staff, all the czars, and Empress MO’s exorbitant staff-plus the cost of the extended fsmily living in the WH. Then quantify the dollars and cents gain to the country for the time and expenses involved. I suspect the evidence will prove we have been robbed. He would not have passed a 90-day evaluation in any serious business! Who is he? A fraud.

Who is Obama? You won’t know because of this document.

This is a good start but it’s not time to yield. This “health care” aberration is littered with land mines and each one must be disarmed and disposed of before there is any agreement or capitulation.

(indypat) Thanks for the info.Thought it was a trojan horse .
thmcbb on August 16, 2009 at 11:28 AM
Your point remains valid . . . it could well be a Trojan Horse and that’s why it must be watched closely and scrubbed of all its dangerous content.

A couple of points, first I hope that, as we watch the flurry of ads supporting this reform, we keep in mind the CNN interview with Ms. Douglass. It’s going to be pretty obvious who has “skin” in the game.
Secondly, although Obama has himself to blame for this, the press has done nothing to help him. Let’s remember, most of the opposition to these plans started immediately after ABC’s 2-1/2 hour infomercial. Talk about a disservice to the president, no one at ABC felt it was important to subject the plan to serious questions. No, instead, ABC thought it was appropriate to not subject the proposals to any scrutiny and help the president look good and knowledgeable.
The president could do the country, his party, and himself a lot of good if he were to come out and tell the leaders in the House to go back to the drawing board and come up with a bipartisan plan that would accomplish certain specific goals (and specify them). Without that, we’ll have a Pelosi bill that few, outside the extreme liberal wing of the Democratic Party, will support and the issue will be dead.

This health care bill is the beginning of the end for America. We will become the People’s Republik of Amerika a generation after socialism has taken a firm hold over us.
For America to live, socialism must die.

But why rewrite the constitution when you can simply ignore the one we have. It’s worked for him so far. To be fair, it worked for Bush also and the Congress as a whole.
Would that we had some higher court system that might review and slap down unconstitutional actions. Maybe we could institute something like that and call it, I don’t know, a Supreme Court of something.

He hasn’t really surprised me. I agree, he’s limiting his role to nothing much beyond speechmaking, and it’s not working.
He seemed dangerously amoral in the primary to me, when I saw him very willing to stir up racial animosity to win. It worked, too. But anyone with so little concern about people struck me as dangerously aloof from real people.
I did not vote for him, although I disagreed with many of McCain’s positions in the election. Still do. But I personally pay attention to character in my own voting.
That does count.

Obama has managed to run a spectacularly bad administration. Hiring tax cheats and far-left loonies. Promising transparency and giving secrecy. Promising post-partisanship and giving hyper-partisanship. Missteps in off-the-cuff remarks. Reliance on Pelosi and Reid to move the agenda.
Among the other real losers from the Obama administration may well be the political futures of blacks in America. Other things being equal, will Democratic voters get behind the next liberal black candidate? The African-American voting bloc will continue vote for their own. But will the greens, the ivory tower liberals, the lawyers and the hedge funds back a black candidate next time, other things being equal?
Of course, Obama’s problem isn’t his race, it’s his inexperience. But the left is unable to view issues without considering some racial context. How will they spin the failure of the Obama administration?

Most of those screaming race every 10 seconds are really quite young. He has an inexperienced political base.
AnninCA on August 16, 2009 at 12:28 PM
I wish. If the court would roll back the government intrusion into every sector of life, American business could solve a lot of the problems out there. Heck, the current insurance mess was STARTED by an unconstitutional government policy: wage controls. Stripped of the ability to offer more money to better workers, companies turned to non-portable health benefits.
The same Democrats who bemoaned the “company towns” in the coal industry created the current dependence on employer-based insurance.

There is an alternative to 3200, Senator Coburn has a 250 page bill, here is a link:

I have seen people ask about an alternative bill….it’s a start…..
RoxanneH on August 16, 2009 at 12:32 PM
Agreed. I fear that our liberal education system is creating more, not less, racial sensitivity. The left thinks that sensitivity will lead to equality. But of course it won’t, as Martin Luther King was well aware. His dream wasn’t a day when a little black boy could have his blackness celebrated. It was a day when he could join with little white boy and have neither consider the color of their skin.

All the Presidential Assassins were Democrats or left or Islamic.
A quick list:
John Wilks Booth (Dem)
Lee Harvy Oswald (Dem, One of those “visit to Russia” Dems”
Sirhan Sirhan (Islamic but Voted Dem)
Samuel Byck
Squeeky Fromme (Cult Lib)
Arthur Bremer (Liberal Dem)
John Hinckley (Nutcase, Parents were libs)
This does not count the numerous attempts by Al Qaeda to kill H.W. Bush, Clinton and Bush, but those have to be considered Enemy action rather than “politically motivated” tries.
