Sherrod Brown: We’re not doing town halls

posted at 11:36 am on August 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Ohio was a key battleground state for Barack Obama, and the Democratic takeover of its Senate seat in 2006 proved a harbinger of Obama’s eventual general-election victory. Senator Sherrod Brown doesn’t appear to remember who it was that put him in that office. Brown has decided not to hold town-hall forums to answer questions from his constituents, as Hourglass1941 discovered. Instead, Brown has opted for “roundtable discussions” with selected participants while shoving constituents to another building with a faulty videoconferencing connection. Guess who got the invitations?

Oh, sorry, not these people. No, it was the people you’d expect — to rescue Democratic politicians from their constituents:

What Brown held was not, according to his staffers, a town hall meeting, but instead a health care “roundtable.” Apparently that makes a difference. Apparently so that his office staff could lie, without really lying, to constituents who called to ask if he would be holding any town hall meetings. No, they said. No town hall meetings. They didn’t feel obligated to mention the “roundtable.”

Brown cleverly kept the roundtable under wraps until the last minute. At the 11th hour, Brown did an email blast to his supporters. Apparently, Obama email blasted his personal army, Organizing for America.

So, does Brown ever plan to meet with his constituents in the light of day?

This is not Sherrod Brown, but one of his polite and unflappable staffers instead, who probably deserves a raise. He keeps telling the videographer that he’s there to answer her question instead of Brown, but that’s the entire point. No one elected this nice young man to represent the state of Ohio in the US Senate. The voters elected Sherrod Brown, and Brown should be facing them instead of sending staffers with business cards into the hall while Brown closes the doors and convenes with Barack Obama’s OfA groupies.

Be sure to read the rest of the post, which explains the final assessment: “Sherrod Brown can’t run a roundtable, yet he wants to run our health care.”

Ten bucks says the strategy here is have a lot of Democrats start cancelling their townhalls “out of safety concerns,” and then to blame the “mobs” for having the gall to show up and criticize them to their faces for their piss-poor represenation for “silencing” others and “assaulting democracy” with their mobbery and wingnuttiness.

Ten bucks.

All 3 are grandfathered into their current positions.

Afrolib on August 14, 2009 at 11:46 AM

This is really odd. Sherrod is such a man of the people and he has been working on healthcare since he first went to Congress.

In fact, he has refused to partake in the fancy schmancy healthcare he is entitled to as a member of Coongress because he is down with the uninsured. I suppose this is true because it was written to me on his office stationary.

Week in and week out Sherrod is fighting for the people and getting his message out in the Cleveland Plain Dealer through his wife’s column (not that she mentions that she is his wife).

Eevery time I see Sherrod Brown or hear about him I want to punch former Sen. Mike Dewine in the face.

What is the difference, Obama was elected and we get TOTUS?

fourdeucer on August 14, 2009 at 11:46 AM

When these Obamabots said they are willing to pay 50% in taxes for ObamaCare, why are they not donating 50% of their income, or 50% less taxes, to charities that help the less fortunate?

WashJeff on August 14, 2009 at 11:46 AM

The utter perversity of all of this is as these many “representatives” refuse to have open townhall meetings to meet with actual constituents in their districts, they are more than willing to meet with paid up supporters…lobbyists, OforA, and all the rest. Thus, an elected “representative” is now only obligated to meet with those who actively supported him or her.

Now, where in the Constitution does it spell out that only if you voted for and actively supported a member of Congress do you get “representation?”

As we move into 2010…do not forget this. Do not let your family members, neighbors, co-workers nor anyone you meet forget this.

And then, in 2010, vote accordingly.

coldwarrior on August 14, 2009 at 11:47 AM

I don’t understand this strategy. They shut out their constituents who are already concerned about the health care legislation, so in essence they’ve managed to piss off the voters even more. In the meantime they fill these “roundtables” with the sheeple who they’ve already got in their backpocket.

How does this help win any additional support? All they’re doing is digging themselves a deeper grave.

socialism is fundamentally undemocratic as it place the state above the individual.

that’s why it almost always must be imposed by force.

and make no mistake about it: when you shut out opposition voices this is fundamentally anti-democratic.

they all do it;

all leftists:

communists, socialists, fascists, nazis.

they all shut down democratic debate.

obama is following a long line of leftists disregarding democracy to impose socialism: lenin, stalin, castro, kim il sung, mao, pol pot, chavez, allende.

ohiobabe on August 14, 2009 at 11:43 AM

Since Brown was elected in 2006, you’ll have to wait until 2012 show Sherrod the door.

That’s the problem with some Senators. They’re elected for six years, and can anger the voters early in their terms, and hope that people forget by re-election time.

As to removal by recall, the United States Constitution does not provide for nor authorize the recall of United States officers such as Senators, Representatives, or the President or Vice President, and thus no Member of Congress has ever been recalled in the history of the United States. The recall of Members was considered during the time of the drafting of the federal Constitution in 1787, but no such provisions were included in the final version sent to the States for ratification, and the specific drafting and ratifying debates indicate an express understanding of the Framers and ratifiers that no right or power to recall a Senator or Representative from the United States Congress exists under the Constitution.

I’m not sure if Brown is up for re-election in 2010 but all of Congress and one third of the Senate will be. As we move to 2010, these same cowards are going to suddenly want to talk to you, sincerely nod at your concerns while they are calculating how quickly they can get out of the event.

In other words, in 2010, these people that don’t have time for you now on this important issue will want to be your BFF. The first question you should ask them is why should they be reelected when they only show concern for constituents when they need your votes and financial support. Personally, I’m intending on going all out on getting my Congressman defeated. It’s a near impossibility but not insurmountable in the current environment.

Maybe Sherod might want to read this.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aZMUgRYN_PlE

July 7 (Bloomberg) — A new poll found that President Barack Obama’s approval rating has dropped by 13 percentage points from two months ago in Ohio, traditionally a critical swing state in presidential elections.

This was on July 7th, before the town halls even started.

angryed on August 14, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Follow the link to the hourglass1941 blog and watch the last video if you have time.

First part of video:

Videographer: “What group are you guys with?”

First and second man: “Organizing for America.”

Videographer: “Is that, uh, Obama’s group?”

First man: “It’s the grassroots group (emphasis mine) that was formed after the campaign to push Obama’s agenda and do community organizing.”

(Videographer asks about the emailing list)

First man: “Organizing for America was formed by the White House.”

So this just confirms what you already know: to liberals grassroots means bought and paid for … otherwise, there is no such thing as individuals who go to townhall meetings to voice their individual concerns.

Au contraire, mon ami.

By turning the Dem super majority into a Dem super minority, we can shackle the likes of Brown until he is removed in 2012. This is not just about Ohio, but about all these, our United States. One cannot emphasize this enough.

A hostile president facing an equally “hostile” (in the legal sense) and opposed Congress is rendered moot. It was this way in our Nation until the dawning of the 20th Century, when Wilson turned a co-equal Executive Branch into a more-than-equal Executive Branch.

farright on August 14, 2009 at 12:00 PM

Only certain states have the ability to recall US Senators. The 18 states allowing for recall are as follows: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and Wisconsin.

Otherwise, they are protected by the Expulsion Clause in the Constitution.

Under Article I, Section 5, clause 2, of the Constitution, a Member of Congress may be removed from office before the normal expiration of his or her constitutional term by an “expulsion” from the Senate (if a Senator) or from the House of Representatives (if a Representative) upon a formal vote on a resolution agreed to by two-thirds of the Members of the respective body present and voting. While there are no specific grounds for an expulsion expressed in the Constitution, expulsion
actions in both the House and the Senate have generally concerned cases of perceived disloyalty to the United States, or the conviction of a criminal statutory offense which involved abuse of one’s official position.

My Blue Dog rep here in Kansas is doing the same thing. No town halls, no discussion with the constituents.

He is Dennis Moore, from the 3rd District. His webpage used to have a statement that he would not host any townhall meetings, due to blah, blah blah.

That statement is now gone (at least I can’t find it).

But still, no scheduled townhall. He probably got an earful without one. He does have a survey available for feedback now, so that might help. We’ll see how he votes.

I firmly believe that this is the straw that will break the camel’s back on his re-election in 2010. Most of this district is very conservative district. We just need a decent GOP candidate to beat him, and have not chosen wisely the last couple of elections.

redwhiteblue on August 14, 2009 at 12:20 PM

I’m not in Ohio, but in Texas. We very recently moved into a new district on the other side of the state. Our new rep is a dem. He put out a statement that he was not going to do a townhall because he wasn’t going to give “those people” a stage. Hmmm, “those people?” He went on a very liberal local radio talkshow instead- where when any caller questioned anything they were immediately disconnected and the “moderator” or host would say, “I’m not going to allow THAT here.”

Later in the afternoon I tuned into that station again and thought I was going to vomit. It was nothing but pure hatred for the conservatives and ANY ONE ELSE who opposes health care reform.

But the big laugh came when the host said that, as a liberal, he supports hearing from other groups (unlike the ugly conservatives) and next week is having a leader from a local gay group come on. I think if he was honest he would have someone from the conservative community come on. Oh, what would be great is to have a gay conservative come on!

Anyway, my point is- is that I am sick and tired of being told to sit down and shut up by our current administration.

Change I could have lived without!

They are on the defense now. Good. Don’t let up.

To paraphrase Custer, “Where in hell did all those Indians citizens come from???!!”

So whatever happened to Bush being too much of a coward to meet Cindy Sheehan?

Sherrod Brown: We’re not doing town halls

We’re not getting any town halls in Tennessee either. Wuzzies, all of them!!

Aux armes, citoyens! Formez vos bataillons! Marchons, marchons!

coldwarrior on August 14, 2009 at 12:36 PM

Fox just showed that Sheila Jackson-Lee had an Obama plant in her town hall pretending to be a doctor. The plants are everywhere. With this much vegetation, the CO2 level must be plummeting.

It would be nice if the good people of Ohio would remove the Rino Voinovich and replace him with a constitutionalists minded conservative or liberarian. That man pisses me off worst than Nobama. He stood against John Bolton stands with the DemonRats on everything else just like the Specter of Pa. Both are old and foolish.

Sherrod Brown is a spineless, gutless, yellow bellied weasel of a coward!

Well agreed!

Except for one thing, though: I flatly refuse to call Obama “President”. I just can’t do it, even if I were an atheist. If I ever denounce my personal spirituality, I fret my tongue might still catch fire to say, “President Obama”.

Brown is very responsive to his voters. When I say ‘his voters’, I mean those that vote straight ticket democrat. Anyone else who lives in his district doesn’t count.
