Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on August 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

In yet another example of why politicians make bad doctors, Barack Obama offered the following justification for ObamaCare in his Portsmouth, NH greenhouse town-hall forum.  We can prevent prostate cancer, Obama explained, by making colonoscopies more available:

Now, when we pass health insurance reform, insurance companies will no longer be able to place some arbitrary cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or a lifetime.  And we will place a limit on how much you can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses, because no one in America should go broke because they get sick.  (Applause.)
And finally — this is important — we will require insurance companies to cover routine checkups and preventive care, like mammograms and colonoscopies — (applause) — because there’s no reason we shouldn’t be catching diseases like breast cancer and prostate cancer on the front end.  That makes sense, it saves lives; it also saves money — and we need to save money in this health care system.

Does that “make sense”?  Only if you flunked medical school.  Colonoscopies don’t detect prostate cancer; they give an early warning of colon cancer.  If Obama hasn’t yet figured out the difference between a prostate exam and a colonoscopy, someone should tell him to switch doctors.

Even if one overlooks that amateurish fumble, his argument still doesn’t make sense.  The current system does better at providing those screening tests than the Canadian and British systems Obama admires so much.  The Hoover Institute had the numbers almost two weeks ago:

  • Nine out of ten middle-aged American women (89 percent) have had a mammogram, compared to fewer than three-fourths of Canadians (72 percent).
  • Nearly all American women (96 percent) have had a Pap smear, compared to fewer than 90 percent of Canadians.
  • More than half of American men (54 percent) have had a prostatespecific antigen (PSA) test, compared to fewer than one in six Canadians (16 percent).
  • Nearly one-third of Americans (30 percent) have had a colonoscopy, compared with fewer than one in twenty Canadians (5 percent).

Sounds like we have a much better system now, using the Obama Finger In The … Wind system.  (h/t HA reader Buy Danish)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Addendum: Normally I’d put a link to Chris Muir’s Day by Day site here, but today I want to do more than that. Chris has a fundraising drive to keep his excellent cartoon alive.  Be sure to drop a few dollars in his collection to keep one of the Rightosphere’s most talented warriors in the fight!

Under the current system, doctors would rather hack out your spine than do a colonoscopy because de-spinalization pays more.

Some facts he conveniently overlooked are that our survival rates are so much higher than Canada and Britian because we do not have waiting lists so people receive care quickly and we cover the high cost cancer drugs that socialized medicine does not.
The lying and distortion of facts is frightening. Hopefully people will wake up and see what he is trying to do.

Our president shows on a daily basis that he is so great that facts don’t matter. It’s not like he’s lying, he’s just to busy to find out the facts. But that’s okay because it’s him that’s saying and he is The Won.

I’d be wary of any “colonoscopies” that involve the front end.

Seriously though, the filthy liar in the White House is constantly talking about these mythical savings that will pay for it all. He needs to prove that point with hard numbers since the CBO and pretty much every analysis doesn’t agree that preventive care saves money.

The media spin has been sickening (apparently the White House figured out what a disaster the NH event was). Current propaganda is that the filthy liar really really really wanted to talk to the critics. They’ve also changed the way tickets are distributed supposedly for reasons other than criticism that allowing Democrat Congressmen to hand out tickets isn’t the way to find a real audience.

THERE IS NO CANADIAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM!!!

It is even worse than you imagine, because there are 13 healthcare systems, all being run by the government of the day in the given province or territory based on that government’s priorities.

But here is the best part!! The federal government hands out the money to the provinces to administer healthcare, but has NO say in how that money is spent………

If anything, that should scare you folks more than any other aspect of bill presented by the Clothes with no Emporer.

Unlimited coverage, limited out-of-pocket. But of course this will contribute to increased cost instead of lowering cost. Welcome to Joe Biden economics where we have to spend more money to keep from going broke.

MD expects it is in the small bowel.

Capsule endoscopy (Camera that travels through the guts)could diagnose-$1200

Medicare requires an upper GI and a colonoscopy FIRST to rule out a problem. Neither of these tests look at the small bowel. THE PHYSICIAN determines the problem is likely in the small bowel, but Medicare red tape requires two other useless tests be done first.

I don’t know the cost of the upper GI and Colonoscopy but obviously they are extra and unnecessary (not to mention the added risks).

Every day there is waste like this in the bureaucratic system that is Medicare. The potential of cost savings if effort was applied-astounding.

Unfortunately, colonoscopy is the only screening test to find adenomatous (pre-cancerous) polyps, leading to polypectomy.

This kind of polyp can take 10 years to grow into a nasty colon cancer and usually doesn’t start growing until after age 50.

When we take free-market incentive out of the deal, there will be fewer people trying to find ways to screen without colonoscopy-like blood testing or poo samples.

so ProfMiao: why do we have all these preventive tests? so the hospitals/docs can make money? are you saying that detection of breast cancer early before it metastisizes is not worth the money? or prostate cancer which is very treatable?

i’m not arguing, i really want to know.

The extent to which such tests are widely available depends on a number of factors including how responsive the system is to individual need and demand. For an individual who pays some direct portion of the cost of their health car, the testing may be much more cost effective if, say, a colonoscopy costs $1500 dollars but colon cancer surgery and treatment costs you $75,000 (and/or your life). But for a single-payer system where there is no competition (i.e., nobody can offer you better service, you can’t just pay for the testing yourself), providing colonoscopies to everyone over 50, when only say 8% of them will ever develop colon cancer is far more expensive than treating the 8 percent. The formulas don’t allow for the ‘cost’ of deaths that might have been prevented with the universal available of screening.

This is the sort of calculus that the “health care effectiveness studies” being funded to the tune of hundreds of millions with stimulus funds engage in.

Hey, give Obama a break. In Washington, it’s hard to tell a penis from an anus. I guess that the president doesn’t realize when the doctor give him “the finger” it’s not a colonoscopy. When the president flips the finger, all Americans can expect a colonoscopy.

The more I listen to President Obama the more I realize that he’s not completely unlike some of the backwoods politicians with whom I work here in Kentucky. Many of them know big words and can make them sound “real purty,” but often times they haven’t slightest idea what they mean.

Saturday Night Live could have a blast with this guy.

Was it Ben Franklin who said, “Behold the orator with his flood of words and a drop of reason”?

Now that we think we might have gotten the attention of these morons, is it time to let them know what “reform” is acceptable? Tort reform, healyh insurance no longer tied to employers, HSA’s and competition across state lines….
