NH Representatives bug out instead of facing constituents
posted at 10:11 am on August 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
If the voters in New Hampshire expected to get answers from their Congressional Representatives on health-care reform, they may have to wait a long, long time. Neither Paul Hodes or Carol Shea-Porter will meet with constituents during the August recess, a time when Beltway politicians usually touch base with voters back home to both raise money and take heat over their policies. Instead, both will meet an entirely different constituencies:
Democratic Rep. Paul Hodes (NH-02) has no publicly scheduled town hall meetings with constituents planned for the August recess but he will appear in Concord as the “featured guest” at the Blue Hampshire Bash, a party for liberal bloggers on August 24th, NowHampshire.com has learned.
Controversial San Francisco-based blogger Markos Moulitsas Zúniga will also be a featured guest at the event. …
News of Hodes’ participation in the Blue Hampshire Bash is causing some to question his priorities. In addition to holding no town hall events, which are vital opportunities for constituents to discuss issues with their members of congress, Hodes was criticized by a constituent in the media on Wednesday for refusing him an appointment.
At least Hodes will stay in New Hampshire, even if he’s hiding behind the skirts of Markos Moulitsas. Shea-Porter will go a thousand miles to hide from her constituents:
A second member of New Hampshire’s congressional delegation is opting to meet with liberal bloggers instead of holding town hall meetings with constituents on the issue of health reform.
Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) will speak in Pittsburg, PA today at Netroots Nation, an enclave of liberal bloggers intended to promote liberal public policy, educate activists on internet communication techniques and even enjoy “everything from massages to beer tastings to author signings.”
Netroots Nation is sponsored by several politically powerful unions as well as the influential liberal blog Daily Kos.
Shea-Porter has not held any town hall meetings with constituents this August recess and has no such publicly scheduled events for the balance of the month. Her office did not respond to our request for comment.
Maybe this makes more sense for both. After all, they clearly don’t believe they answer to voters in their districts. They answer more to the unions and hard-Left activists at these functions. New Hampshire voters have a chance to realize that, perhaps for the first time, as Hodes and Shea-Porter run away from them.
This also clarifies the pushback from the Democrats on ObamaCare protests. They claim that the protesters don’t represent mainstream America. If that’s so, the Democrats have had plenty of opportunity now to arrange for their idea of mainstream America to attend these forums. So far, though, most of the people who attend the town halls seem angry at their Representatives rather than angry at the opposition — which is the reason why Hodes and Shea-Porter have hightailed it out of town, and in the latter case, out of state.
Not coincidentally, I’m at the Right Online conference today, where Pat Toomey will speak this evening. Pat Toomey, it should be noted, has stayed home in Pennsylvania where he plans on running for the US Senate, as Hodes will in New Hampshire next year. Unlike Hodes, he doesn’t have to answer for supporting a multi-trillion-dollar government takeover of American health care, and so his reception outside the hall of a conference will be much friendlier than Hodes’ … which is why Hodes will remain holed up at Blue Hampshire rather than talking with the voters of his district.

Seems as if we have some of both these days.

If I lived in New Hampshire, instead of all the across the country, I’d organize a protest of Hodes out front of that Blue Hampshire nutroots meeting.
It would be the best sort of political theater.
“Hodes is cozying up to special interests and ignoring the legitimate demands of his constituents.”
Anyone know how to get in touch with the New Hampshire tea-partiers?

In my neighboring rep district in IL, Bill Foster, who took Denny Hastert’s seat after retirement, sent two underlings in his place instead of showing up at the town hall (news link here).
There was a protest in front of my Rep Halvorson’s Joliet office yesterday since she will not hold a townhall. I could not attend since 35 miles and work separated me from the protest.

As someone suggested on the Radio (Bennett?) yesterday, all conservatives should adopt the slogan MAKE THEM PAY for the 2010 and 2012 elections. I think that is a brilliant idea.
Make them pay for their refusal to listen. Make them pay for taxation without representation, which is what they are doing when they try to sell us on THEIR ideas of health care reform instead of listening to the real concerns majority of their constituents. Make them pay for their insane cap-and-tax bill if they pass it. And so on.
Make them pay. Let them know you will vote them out if they don’t start doing the right thing.

Maybe people will start to look more closely at who they send off to DC (or their state capitol).
I know a lot of people feel that one crook is as good as the next one (and there is some truth to that), but things could change over time. Sure, it will take a long time, but at some point we can make it to under 80% corrupt, worthless SOBs, then under 70% – YES WE CAN! 50/50 by 2150!
That is centuries away for me, as most of the clowns in MA run unopposed, or virtually unopposed. Sickens me. Of course the reps out here have no scheduled town halls, either. Must be nice.

What exactly did they expect? Freedom and liberty can’t be taken away from the American electorate…but voters can give it away.

I watched Sen. Grassley’s meeting on C-span last night. He did a good job and the crowd was thoughtful. It was held in a church and at the end a representative of the denomination got up and made a speech on the church’s vote to promote universal single payer insurance. Considering everything else I saw she was lonely. A lot of these people think that government controlled health care will be free, I don’t think that is being discuss enough.
Cindy Munford on August 14, 2009 at 10:36 AM
I object to the symbolic labeling of conservative Republicans “red” and liberal Democrats “blue.” In the Revolutionary War, the red-coated British represented much of what liberalism stands for today, and the boys in blue paved the way for those very right-wing documents known as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. And Red China is at the left end of the spectrum.

As for Shea-Porter, she’ll probably lost in 2010. It’s the most conservative of the two districts in NH. The Mayor of Manchester is running against her, so maybe she’s just going to fall on her sword. Hodes is running for US Senate, so his actions don’t make sense.

I’m really thinking (well, I know…) that they do not care. I think that it’s going to go down. I think they’ll pass it, hook or crook, and that somehow, someway, they’ll get monetary compensation for doing it. If Soros is dropping major change to simply give to people, and to advertise for Obamacare, then, what is stopping these corruptocrats from getting monetary assurances and a guarantee that these people will not lose their seats (they have ACORN and the census, remember?) when they vote against their constituency?

Also, many leftists really do not mind engaging the right, and hate the fact that they are now being shown as “scared” or ashamed of what they are doing.

In a sane world it doesn’t make sense, but people have short memories. I’m afraid that all of this will be forgotten next summer when re-election campaigns heat up.
They know they can get away with more in odd years, because way too many people aren’t paying attention and the ones that are have short attention spans. 2010 is huge though, because after 2010 when the final census figures come in (and who will trust those?) there could be trouble.
I can see some epic gerrymandering in 2011 – another odd year where their antics will be forgotten.

This is also happening in Massachusetts.
I’ve excerpted an article that appears on the New England Cable News website below;
At least 500 people showed up in the town square today. Some came to support the president’s plan, but others believe their voices aren’t being heard.
The debate over health care reform came to downtown Peabody on Thursday. As people on both sides of the controversy demonstrated outside the office of Congressman John Tierney.
Some opponents of the president’s plan complained the democratic congressman wasn’t listening to their concerns…
But Tierney’s office says he’ll hold several face-to-face town hall meetings this fall. And rumors that a town hall meeting was cancelled this month are false.
The congressman also plans so-called “telephone town halls”— conference calls with his constituents. Tierney is travelling with his family this week, But members of his staff met with local residents at the Peabody office.
Catherine Ribeiro, Communications Director: “Anyone who wants to drop by today, we welcome them into the office. We’d love to have them sit down and express their concerns or their support, or whatever it is that they have on their minds.”
The demonstrators protesting against the president’s plan were organized in part by Bill Hudak. A republican who makes no secret of how he feels about the president. He’s also challenging Tierney for his seat…
Peabody police were out here along with the protestors to make sure the sidewalk stayed clear in front of the Congressman’s office. But other than yelling and chanting, they didn’t report any problems.
Read the whole article, and you can also link back to Bill Hudak’s website here.

It is no wonder that these two (NH) reps do not meet with their constituants.
They were elected by UNH students and Massachusetts neroots who voted early and often using New Hampshires liberal voter registration laws which invite fraud. The two are probably afraid to enter the state as they might get lost if they go north of Portsmouth.

WashJeff on August 14, 2009 at 10:45 AM
In reality, as in the case of some of these representatives of poorer districts, a yes vote might well be what the majority of their constituants want. In heavily populated districts that are a majority of minorities, aka chicago, the people there will support any program that will give them anything free. While I will tell you that that I believe the townhall protestors have no racial motivation, I will tell you that in htese districts it is all about race. Just like 95 percent of blacks voted for Obama, an overwhelming majority will support this as surely they have the most to gain from it. You almost cant blame them either, because they have little opportunitiy in thier districts thanks to AMerican corporations shipping jobs overseas for decades. If there are no jobs, where are they supposed to get food, healthcare, education and housing. SO why have the jobs left. Because of heavy regulation and high corporate taxes. The gov is compounding these problems on a grand scale. I self feeding , self propogating welfare state is in the making. So while suburban america says hell no, the heavily populated centers support the liberal agenda. Our big cities, overwhelmingly democratic/liberal run, are draining the lifelbood of the rest of the nation. ANy wonder its the most populated states such as CA, NY and IL, all liberal , that have the highest deficits? Arnold doesnt count, CA is a liberal state.

I would think that since the Libs are so much smarter than us, they would have already dissected the bill twice to demonstrate how we are so intellectually inferior to them.

“According to a Quinnipiac University poll, President Obama’s overall approval rating from American voters has dropped from 57 percent in July to a current 50 percent, its lowest level since he took office.”
Dude, his approval rating has dropped seven percentage points in one month while he is out there giving speeches every day about how wonderful his health care plan WILL BE. So, in the liberal mindset, you say, even though his ratings have dropped 7 points just talking about some mysterious plan, his ratings will go up 10 points once it is passed.
What are you smoking?

ted c, do you frequent any other blogs? I know some people don’t care to waste their time arguing with “those who will not hear” but you would do well at Tapper’s Political Punch blog, slapping the whiny liberals around… they hate hearing that kind of stuff. You could really make ‘em gnash their teeth! Just sayin’.

A liberal state full of Democrats and the Congressional Representatives are afraid of a friendly crowd?
Could it be that there are many Democrats and Independents that also don´t want Obamacare?? This is the secret the Dems are trying to keep a lid on.
If someone could get more Democrats and Independent voters to speak out publicly against Obamacare this would cause a real problem for Barrack and Rahm and Nancy and Harry.

My representative, Steve Israel (D-NY), doesn’t seem to be having any meetings either. I’ve asked by email when/if one is scheduled, but no response.

This statement ignores the fact that many of the components of a “robust health care reform” are not being considered, including;
1. Tort Reform
2. Private insurance offered in multiple states
3. Full transparency of billing (allowing patients to see, and audit their bills.
4. Expanding HSA’s
5. Catastrophic coverage, for those that want it.
No, seniors are energized because they have spent a lifetime contributing to society, and now see their standard of living eroded, and the sure fact that their existing insurance will be taken away. These are not the result of misinformation, but rather of facts.
Other than being wrong in both paragraphs, good post.

This isn’t about the facts. This is about demonizing the dissenters. The constant mantra is that this is GOP organized bully tactics. The only problem for the filthy liar and his minions is that those crowds of proteters know they are not organized mobs.

I’m sure there will be “Birth Panels” too, set up in order to help “nudge” those with unwanted or risky pregnancies towards abortion rather than supporting them in choosing adoption or a life devoted to a handicapped child.
Oh, wait, that is a “Death Panel.”
