Lefty boycott succeeding in getting advertisers to drop Glenn Beck

posted at 8:00 pm on August 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

No wonder. It’s a full-court press: Media Matters, MSNBC, nutroots blogs, and, as seen below, both of Comedy Central’s wonder twins are all pushing it. (Stewart’s segment doesn’t have to do with the boycott, actually, but it’s amusing enough to merit the embed.) Abandon ship:

Among the advertisers to pull spots from the popular cable talk show are Geico, owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway; Procter & Gamble; Sargento Cheese; and Progressive Insurance, according to the companies and Color of Change, one group that is organizing a campaign against the program.

Geico didn’t respond to a request for comment but sent Color of Change an email saying it had “instructed its ad-buying service to redistribute its inventory of rotational spots on [Fox] to their other network programs, exclusive of the Glenn Beck program.”.

Privately held Sargento told its media buyer not to put any of its ads in Beck’s show, said a spokeswoman…

“We place advertising on a variety of programming with the goal of reaching a broad range of insurance consumers who might be interested in our products,” said a spokeswoman for Progressive. “We also seek to avoid advertising on programming that our customers or potential customers may find extremely offensive.”…

For its part, Fox News said through a spokeswoman that while some advertisers have “removed their spots from Beck,” they have just shifted to “other programs on the network, so there has been no revenue lost.”

Erick Erickson’s trying to get a counter-boycott going because “If they are successful, they will move beyond Beck to others.” A noble impulse, but is that really true? My hunch is that companies have limited patience for this sort of thing; they’ll throw a bone to an angry constituency if it’s sufficiently large and focused on one show, but the more targets the boycotters add, the greater the headaches for corporate advertisers who are looking for airtime and sensitive about not alienating other constituencies by getting too political. Even here, the great lefty victory over Beck appears only to have resulted in ads being shifted to other Fox programs. If Media Matters et al. suddenly decide they want O’Reilly and Hannity boycotted too, how many companies will oblige them knowing that it means sacrificing the biggest viewing audience in cable news?

The most depressing thing about this isn’t the fear of lefties taking down conservative broadcasters, it’s the fact that Beck is catching hell while the demagogue di tutti demagogues, a man who eagerly compares Republicans to terrorists when he isn’t busy screaming about right-wing “hate speech,” rests easily in the thought that his own advertising is secure. Exit question: Just what would Olby have to say or do to warrant a rightroots boycott of Countdown’s advertisers? He can’t sink much lower. Someone set the bar, quick!

It’s all about the money, and power and the leftist agenda.

What kind of discussions can people have when there is a disgusting and racist comment on a thread?

terryannonline on August 15, 2009 at 12:07 PM

Call the person out on it and then ignore the person as necessary. If AP or Ed think it merits deletion or banning, they can come to that decision on their own without your snitching.

Missy on August 15, 2009 at 12:14 PM

I switched from GEICO a few months ago not because of Glenn Beck.

GEICO is a bitch if you ever have to file a claim for any reason. Their customer service is almost as bad as Dell.

tetriskid on August 15, 2009 at 12:14 PM

There was a time, in this country, when a person would say something wrong and someone would challenge them to a debate. I’m sure that, if an official spokesman for the Administration, or any other group Glenn Beck may have offended, said they wanted to come on and dispute what h e said, both Beck and Fox News would be more than happy to let that happen. Liberals don’t want to debate, they want to shut down opposing voices.

I’ve been a Geico customer for years and I’m offended that this company is willing to participate in something like this. When will companies like this realize that they should never take the lead in these things. This is a preemptive stike against free speech in this country and I would think that companies, especially those that advertise, would want to be careful what they jump into. What if these same people, that want to stifle free speech, start attacking their ads for one reason or another. It’s always a slippery slope.

If the left had the facts on their side, they could ruin Glenn Becks credibility in a few broadcasts by sending credible people there to dispute his facts. My guess is they’re incapable.

That is exactly what happened. I saw racist comment. I emailed tips@hotair.com . Someone deleted the comment. I don’t see why people are making a big deal about it.

And by the way I had to email HotAir because Allahpundit has admitted he doesn’t read all the threads. So how is going to know about a comment if someone doesn’t email him? And by the way I didn’t email AP about gun’s comment last night. Someone else probably did or AP just saw it himself. So obviously I’m not the only that found his comments offensive.

When Trolls attack you personally, your friends at Hot air will have your back. A new one came after me regarding my special daughter the other night and katy, thomasaur, and others had my back. If they are a particularly offensive new Troll, they usually get themselves banished in a veery short period of time. I saw gun’s comments the other day, and several people called him on them. It is when commenters refuse to exercise restraint and are extremely obnoxious and vile that they get the Ban Hammer dropped on them.

Just logged on and after perusing the thread I see GTL has been banned. As much as he embellishes himself I have to give him credit for what he did on the Michael Yon thread the other day. As far as Glenn losing his advertisers, I think this is just part of a larger plan by the left to try to marginalize the right. We have to show our side we have the will to win no matter what they throw at us.

I saw the comments that Gun posted that were deleted and I did call him on them and I asked him to take a break. When someone compares a black Congress person to a gorilla, I do believe it is over the line. HA deleted the offending comment. Gun continued on a tear last night and AP dropped the ban hammer. I don’t think HA wants those kind of comments on this site. Yes, I would and did handle it differently than some others on the thread. But, the decision to ban was AP’s and this site. I have been on HA since day one and it takes a lot to get banned. Normally, a series of comments will get you banned not just one. I enjoyed many of Gun’s comments but when someone goes over the line in HA’s mind, they get gone. Go back and read the threads. See what you think. Then if you disagree, take it up with HA.

Just read this about the boycott of Glenn Beck.

I used to work in the marketing industry, I am amazed that people think this will hurt Beck?? LOL, think again. Given his ratings, there will ALWAYS be companies willing to buy advertising. Whenever an advertiser steps out, there are literally hundreds willing to step in its place. Believe me, Beck is not losing a second of sleep over this lame attempt by the left.

His ratings are gold for FNC, and will continue to be so. Only a matter of time before he gets a primetime slot.

Well this makes me wish that I wasn’t forced to go with progressive for motorcycle insurance since USAA (awesome organization) doesn’t offer motorcycle insurance anymore and pass that off to progressive.

I did look for some other companies for motorcycle insurance however I came up empty handed (at least with those that have online quotes). Any others just didn’t offer insurance in michigan.

Now PG is going to be hard to not buy products from. Will now try to do my best to not support their efforts of influencing government.

I wrote GEICO and the other advertisers who are dropping ads on his show. I told them I was shocked they were giving in to a small group of liberals, led by a communist, in an apparent attack on freedom of speech and let them I was taking my business elsewhere. I received the following response from GEICO:

“Thank you, first of all for your business and also for your interest in this matter.

This week we took action to move our marketing messages from the Glenn Beck show and you are wondering why.

Well, you deserve an answer.

If the inflammatory nature of the comments on a program overshadows our message and causes GEICO to be drawn into a national debate, we are likely to reconsider where we place our marketing messages, which is what we did.

GEICO delivers very important messages through its major marketing campaigns: we’re saving customers’ dollars, we’re easy to do business with, we’re looking out for our policyholders. That’s what we hope the public hears and sees and focuses on.

As a company, we do not take positions on controversial issues.

As an advertiser, while a national debate on issues can be healthy and appropriate, we don’t see ourselves in the role of taking part in those debates.

Our business is auto insurance. We want to bring people value and we attempt to
reach large audiences with that message.

It is of little benefit to us if a program gets so much attention that our message is drowned out.

We sincerely regret that you are considering canceling your policy. We appreciate your business and would like to review your policy with you to ensure you are receiving the best possible rates and service.

Please reply to this email with a telephone number and time that is most convenient for you. We will attempt to contact you within 24-48 hours of your response.”

Have I responded to GEICO? Nope. Will I be canceling my policies? You betcha!

lovedinthekeys on August 15, 2009 at 12:53 PM

When we will someone sue these groups that create a boycott simply to silence free speech. While that job should belong to the Justice Dept. under the RICO act, I have to believe relief can be found in a civil court as well.

Pick just the biggest ORGANIZED leftist org. that is engineering this boycott and sue them for violating civil rights – not the free speech, but the right to earn a living. Beck – and others will follow – is being discriminated against on the basis of his political views, but it is also an attempt to deprive him of earning a living.

Take Soros or Acorn, whoever the real backer of this boycott, to court Beck – it’ll be so much fun and might set precedent. Not to mention the ability of lawyers to track the money trial.

You should respond by advising them of your cancellation when you make it. And of course with a note that you will advise your family and friends to follow suit. Keep the line of communication open as long as possible so they waste their man-hours dealing with this issue from the Right side of the aisle as well as the Left.

That’s how the Left got into power – as some of us tried telling the pansies here at HA like Ed and AP – by being vocal and loud and out there. You think those weren’t mobs that started the revolution!?! You think they were all nice and quiet voicing opposition!?!

America was founded by a mob – with guns!

No one had a dash-American after their name –we were just plain Americans. Now, people when they don’t like something someone says, scream “Offensive!” There is no right in the Constitution guaranteeing a right to not be offended. We are guests here and should act accordingly.I would also think that we are adults here and can handle those who weren’t taught manners. Bicyea on August 15, 2009 at 8:58 AM
Yes you’re right. People who have the resources to organize this large and powerful of a boycott are folks who can’t afford cars and are forced to take the bus. And have no need for insurance of any kind. Newsflash man, the black middle class is growing in size every year and, no different than folks who boycott CBS because of Janet Jackson’s boob, they’re allowed to use their resources to pressure media institutions. Deal with it and move on.

CrankyIndependent on August 15, 2009 at 9:30 AM

Who said they couldn’t Afford? They are just like my WHITE leftwing nutjob daughter who choose, and think everyone else should me MADE to ride the bus! Who said anything about a BLACKMAN? Leftist and elitist come in all colors but leave it to YOU to inject race into this comment. I expected nothing less from someone who has no legitimate response.

MOVE ON race-baiter.

Glenn Beck is a powerful voice to folks who are out there trying to raise kids, put food on the table, keep their job and trying to make sense out of the latest BS from Team Obama – he may look a little kooky – but look at his ratings – he packs them in – and they are very loyal. Guess whom people trust more: The Messiah? Or G. Beck? Gold star………

Cinday Blackburn on August 15, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Glenn Beck dropped a 7 figure ad contract with GM because they turned into Government Motors. Do you really think this little attempt will have any effect on him?

Bicyea on August 15, 2009 at 12:59 PM

I remember the day the Gov’t announced it was bailing out GM, Hannity was still reading ads about how wonderful GM was.

YYZ on August 15, 2009 at 2:07 PM

I am constantly amazed at the surprise of the the mainstream of their free falling audience share. It never occurs to them that insulting half of the nation might not be the smartest move ever. But I am sure they get a lot of high fives from their friends while unemployed. But no ever said they are smart.

Cindy Munford on August 15, 2009 at 2:07 PM

I really like the GEICO ad Pam has up at AtlasShrugs.

And an added bonus: It will pi$$ off PETA.

Bicyea on August 15, 2009 at 2:14 PM

I read the other day that TV ad revenue was down 30% because of the recession and loss of viewership. My guess is that the FOX news channel is one channel that has not had a loss of viewership. In fact it is probably going through the roof.

SC.Charlie on August 15, 2009 at 2:17 PM

Those who support Glenn Beck can write his sponsors and tell them that they will boycott their products, too. Stop purchasing anything (and there are a lot of products) from:

Geico
Berkshire Hathaway
Procter & Gamble
Sargento Cheese
Progressive Insurance

sinsing on August 15, 2009 at 2:18 PM

Better make sure it is WIC approved, would hate for you to have to pay for something out of your own pocket.

ClassicCon on August 15, 2009 at 2:21 PM

Ok so would you prefer? For HotAir moderators not see the racist comments and let if fester for a day. Then Bill O’Reilly (who has read a comment on Hot Air on air) or liberal blogosphere picks up with the headline “LOOK AT THE RACIST COMMENTS OVER AT HOTAIR!”

terryannonline on August 15, 2009 at 12:30 PM

This is a perfect example of the chickensheet cowardice infecting the GOP. Call me a racist, I just don’t care anymore. There is no debate to be had anymore. Let things escalate, and we will finish this for another century.

Being I’m a single childless male, WIC is hard to come by. Have fun at your Nascar and/or monster truck rally this weekend, though. Oh wow, see that?! Stereotypes do work both ways.

The only thing that surprises me about this crap is the fact Progressive Insurance was sponsoring Beck at all. Progressive is owned by George Soros and another like-minded millionaire.
I guess he was going where the audience is, which is the normal state of affairs when it comes to buying media.

Moving more advertising onto MSNBC won’t help the advertisers who drop Beck, since few if any of Beck’s audience EVER watches Maddow, Olbermann or Schultz. In fact, NO ONE much watches them, so any ad money spent there is wasted. Olbermann’s national audience (larger than either Maddow’s or Schultz’s) is equivalent to the city of Cleveland, which should give any advertiser pause if they actually want to reach customers. It’s called cutting your nose off to spite your face while pleasing idiots. Not good economics or common sense.

bradley11 on August 15, 2009 at 2:58 PM

More reason for me to watch Beck.

Can’t stand that Progressive woman or Geico ad anyway.

Sir Napsalot on August 15, 2009 at 3:13 PM

Based on what I read GTL wasn’t actually banned for racism as much as he was banned for a tasteless comment about JFK’s assassination. Based on my pre-registration lurking he always skirted the line of taste and just went beyond it.

CrankyIndependent on August 15, 2009 at 3:13 PM

Holy crap, if anyone thinks Glenn Beck is backing down after James Rucker’s (and ColorofChange’s) campaign against him, they need to see today’s (Aug. 15) episode. Beck has just gone totally nuclear on the economics and philosophy behind Obama’s healthcare policies.

And thanks to the left, he’s got several new million eyes on him as he’s doing it.

not sure if anyone saw this posted on one of the previous pages, but feel it sheds further light on Procter and Gamble. Below is the response I received from P&G regarding David Letterman’s comments about Sara Palin and her daughter:

Oh, okay. Thank God you’ve set us all straight. This administration is massively corrupt and Glenn Beck is exposing this corruption. Do ya think he’s making some enemies? The way to shut people up is to discredit them. Maybe you don’t like his delivery, but he’s connecting the dots and Chicago in DC is just the tip of the iceburg.

The Conservative movement needs more media types like Charles Krauthammer and George Will not Glenn Beck. Glenn Beck is a moron and a clown who uses back end racially charged rhetoric and topics to attack the bottom feeders who thrive on hatred of minorities. That is why he is obsessed with ACORN. ACORN gives his audience some brown faces each night to hate.

Sure Beck may bring more people to the Republican Party/Conservative cause who are fundamentally racist and ignorant but is that really who Conservatives want to attack?

Now is not the time for the Republican Party to be Elitist. Glenn Beck, Rush, and Hannity communicate with more people in a single day than Will and Krauthammer do in a year. Will and Krauthammer are both very smart and accomplished men, but, “The Media is the Message”. Squishy Elitism presented the country with McCain, a good American, but uncomfortable with his own Conservatism. Our country is being turned into a Eastern European Socialist Nation. We need a Grassroots Conservative Movement. Now is not the time for Ivy League D.C. Beltway Snobbery.

Conservatives will ride the Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh/Coulter train to obscurity. Those “Jerry Springer” Conservatives are using you to make money. What is good for Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh/Coulter is bad for Conservatives and the Conservative cause.

Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh/Coulter will continue to wear money hats while Democrats stay in power. Maybe that is actually the ultimate goal.
