Lefty boycott succeeding in getting advertisers to drop Glenn Beck

posted at 8:00 pm on August 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

No wonder. It’s a full-court press: Media Matters, MSNBC, nutroots blogs, and, as seen below, both of Comedy Central’s wonder twins are all pushing it. (Stewart’s segment doesn’t have to do with the boycott, actually, but it’s amusing enough to merit the embed.) Abandon ship:

Among the advertisers to pull spots from the popular cable talk show are Geico, owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway; Procter & Gamble; Sargento Cheese; and Progressive Insurance, according to the companies and Color of Change, one group that is organizing a campaign against the program.

Geico didn’t respond to a request for comment but sent Color of Change an email saying it had “instructed its ad-buying service to redistribute its inventory of rotational spots on [Fox] to their other network programs, exclusive of the Glenn Beck program.”.

Privately held Sargento told its media buyer not to put any of its ads in Beck’s show, said a spokeswoman…

“We place advertising on a variety of programming with the goal of reaching a broad range of insurance consumers who might be interested in our products,” said a spokeswoman for Progressive. “We also seek to avoid advertising on programming that our customers or potential customers may find extremely offensive.”…

For its part, Fox News said through a spokeswoman that while some advertisers have “removed their spots from Beck,” they have just shifted to “other programs on the network, so there has been no revenue lost.”

Erick Erickson’s trying to get a counter-boycott going because “If they are successful, they will move beyond Beck to others.” A noble impulse, but is that really true? My hunch is that companies have limited patience for this sort of thing; they’ll throw a bone to an angry constituency if it’s sufficiently large and focused on one show, but the more targets the boycotters add, the greater the headaches for corporate advertisers who are looking for airtime and sensitive about not alienating other constituencies by getting too political. Even here, the great lefty victory over Beck appears only to have resulted in ads being shifted to other Fox programs. If Media Matters et al. suddenly decide they want O’Reilly and Hannity boycotted too, how many companies will oblige them knowing that it means sacrificing the biggest viewing audience in cable news?

The most depressing thing about this isn’t the fear of lefties taking down conservative broadcasters, it’s the fact that Beck is catching hell while the demagogue di tutti demagogues, a man who eagerly compares Republicans to terrorists when he isn’t busy screaming about right-wing “hate speech,” rests easily in the thought that his own advertising is secure. Exit question: Just what would Olby have to say or do to warrant a rightroots boycott of Countdown’s advertisers? He can’t sink much lower. Someone set the bar, quick!

Should consider hitting huffpo advertizers. Give them their own medicine.

Or hit Keith Olbermann his ratings alone means that most advertisers want out of sponcering him anyways.

CWforFreedom on August 14, 2009 at 8:09 PM

One thing good about this,Beck will have all guns blazing on that van jones turd.jones has about 70,000 fellow cornholers in his group ,Beck has millions of listeners/viewers.He’ll keep pushing this till most of the public knows obama picked a racist/communist for one of his illegal czar positions.

theTarCzar on August 14, 2009 at 8:09 PM

I could never really get behind product/company boycotts. Most of them are directed at products/companie I do not use or against products/companies I could not live without.

I’m much more likely to spend dollars on a company that I hear good things about, like special support for the troops or sponsorship of special needs programs.

I think that the companies that are falling in line behind the Beck boycott are making a big mistake though.

Kafir on August 14, 2009 at 8:11 PM

Why would anyone boycott Olbermann….?
His rates must be about a hundred dollars a minute. I have seen YouTube videos with more hits than an Olbermann show.
More people see the ShamWow guy every week and he is probably more memorable. I would rather watch an infomercial on how to buy real estate with no money down than watch Olbermann.

NeoKong on August 14, 2009 at 8:11 PM

Considering die-hard lefties live off of the state, how do they have so much pull with businesses that they pass so little money to? Additionally, since Beck is on FOX, aren’t FOX’s advertisers aware their advertising with Beck is bringing in plenty of right-wing buyers? They had few lefties to lose anyway.

MadisonConservative on August 14, 2009 at 8:11 PM

cadams on August 14, 2009 at 8:12 PM

Didn’t something similar happen to O’Reilly when he was beginning to be a hit several years ago?
All Beck needs to do is get an interview with Sarah Palin and make those advertisers regret leaving Beck.

cubachi on August 14, 2009 at 8:12 PM

I don’t know why anyone who watches Beck, or any pro-American person at all, would ever buy insurance from Government Employees Insurance Company in the first place.

Buddahpundit on August 14, 2009 at 8:12 PM

I emailed Progressive since I am a customer. I told them that I don’t watch Mr. Beck (true) but considering his show constantly wins it’s time slot I was not impressed with their business plan. I also questioned a company that would impede free speech and insult have of of the country. When renewal time comes in November I am gone.

Cindy Munford on August 14, 2009 at 8:12 PM

I thought companies wanted to buy time on shows that have viewers…isn’t that the point?? The companies that pull out of a Glenn Beck slot are only hurting themselves. Fox News kills all of the other cable news channels…..

Glenn Beck is much more powerful that his sort of “zany” antics would at first reveal – like Sarah P. what he says is honest and rings true with average family people – he has a huge following in a tough time slot – any advertisers that “drop” him will do it only briefly because Beck is just going to get bigger and bigger. Fox is a terrific network and smart – they know how valuable this guy is. And America does also……………

Cinday Blackburn on August 14, 2009 at 8:15 PM

You can’t sit back and let the loony left pull that kinda crap and think they won’t make it work. They’ll find a way to gradually work their way up the ladder and go after other Fox hosts or other conservative talkers.

Erick’s point is very valid — you need to fight these loonies with the same clown tactics they use…and you have to fight them twice as smart and with twice the pocketbook impact.

Dickie Dunn on August 14, 2009 at 8:16 PM

I already cancelled my GEICO policies, emailed P&G and told Sargento to stuff their crappy cheese.

No point emailing Progressive – their founder makes George Soros look like a conservative.

guntotinglibertarian on August 14, 2009 at 8:17 PM

I think George Soros is one of the owners of Progressive Insurance. The name “Progressive” should have given us all a clue.

Percy_Peabody on August 14, 2009 at 8:17 PM

I’m going to sign up with Geico just so I can cancel them.

ConservativeTony on August 14, 2009 at 8:17 PM

This is a non-issue, the left has tried this with Rush and O’Reilly for years. They’ll focus for a few months then when interest dies down, the advertisers will come running back. Beck’s audience is huge, he daily beats all the competition combined. The pansies might jump ship but there will always be other advertisers willing to jump in their spot.

And about the the John Stewart clip, I hope he realizes that wanting to improve health care doesn’t mean turning it over to the government. And just because sometimes our health care system has problems doesn’t mean it’s not the best in the world. I wish someone would confront and debunk
these liberal comedians sometimes.

tarpon on August 14, 2009 at 8:19 PM

They’ve every right to do so. I have every right NOT to buy the products from companies that pull their advertising. But the worst impact is simply self inflicted because they’ll not reach his audience with their product message.

ClanDerson on August 14, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Have sent nasty e-mails to all of the companies that have pulled advertising from Beck. Got one message back from Geico.

If the inflammatory nature of the comments on a program overshadows our message and causes GEICO to be drawn into a national debate, we are likely to reconsider where we place our marketing messages, which is what we did.

GEICO delivers very important messages through its major marketing campaigns: we’re saving customers’ dollars, we’re easy to do business with, we’re looking out for our policyholders. That’s what we hope the public hears and sees and focuses on.

As a company, we do not take positions on controversial issues.

As an advertiser, while a national debate on issues can be healthy and appropriate, we don’t see ourselves in the role of taking part in those debates.

Our business is auto insurance. We want to bring people value and we attempt to reach large audiences with that message.

It is of little benefit to us if a program gets so much attention that our message is drowned out.

GEICO Corporate Communications

So, have they pulled advertising from Olby? How about the View? I doubt it. I e-mailed back and cited specific examples of “inflammatory” comments from the shows listed above and asked if they were pulling ads from these shows as well……..crickets….

It has worked because Beck hasn’t pushed back publicly. I don’t know why. One word on his radio and TV show and these advertisers would get many more times the emails/letters in support of Beck than they do against him. This is how O’Reilly, Hannity, Rush and others have fought boycotts.

johnt on August 14, 2009 at 8:21 PM

I want you to know that your decision to pull advertising from Fox News Channel’s Glenn Beck show to satisfy a far-left HATE group like “Color of Change” is appalling. As an American company, you should support people’s right to speak out against their government when they believe the government is acting irresponsibly. To hand a victory like this to Color of Change and other hate groups just makes their hate and their constant intolerant and un-American efforts to silence political opposition stronger. Shame on you! I will never, ever purchase your products again, and I will do all I can to make sure no one I know ever does either. I could never, in good conscience, patronize a company that supports and encourages bigotry and intolerance. You should have told Color of Change to take their hate and their intolerance somewhere else.

And as much as it pains me, I am going to start monitoring Keith Olbermann’s advertisers and sending them an e-mail EVERY DAY complaining about the content of his show. I suggest others do the same.

This boycott won’t work because of Beck’s climbing ratings. Just like when the Mob led a boycott of sponsors of The Untouchables back in 1960. That show was so hot that when one sponsor pulled out there were plenty of others waiting in the wings. The same will hold true for Glenn Beck. Of coarse GEICO is going to pull their ads from Beck. They have libs like THIS as their spokespeople. Why would they want to advertise on Beck?

TheBigOldDog on August 14, 2009 at 8:26 PM

So I can watch a show without running into that annoying whiny caveman from Geico or woman from Progressive!? AWESOME!!!!

He definitely just gained a regular viewer. DVR set for every episode now!

Considering die-hard lefties live off of the state, how do they have so much pull with businesses that they pass so little money to?
MadisonConservative on August 14, 2009 at 8:11 PM

Seriously!

Anyway, I’m going to be engaging in a reverse-boycott, doing my shopping at Whole Foods tomorrow. Anyone care to do the same?

Beck’s ratings numbers are extremely impressive for his time slot at 5pm (4pm central).

Last night’s numbers
Beck 2,386,000
Matthews 536,000
Bitzer 636,000

I like Beck. He is a liberterian speaks boldly about the constitution, the founding fathers and where we are headed if Obama and his Czars are not kept in line.

He’s gone after Van Jones, who appears to be organizing the boycott, and has called him a communist a few times on radio.

I think he’s not actively saying a boycott is taking place but has chosen to go after Van. With that said, I think Beck should come out and say it and fight fire with fire. As much as I hate the way it lowers political discourse by dragging our side further into the sewer that the loony left resides in, perhaps putting pressure back on the advertisers is the best way of putting the proverbial middle finger up to the left.

Dickie Dunn on August 14, 2009 at 8:27 PM

The show is in no danger of going off the air…heck he has more people watching his show every day than Olberdork has in a month…shoot he doesn’t have enough viewers to qualify as a hack…he’s an ack.

JohnD9207 on August 14, 2009 at 8:28 PM

The outrage from the left, the comedy shows targeting him…..it is a sign that Beck is doing a pretty good job. He is getting somewhere and reaching people and they dont like it. Sure they mock him, but they are scared of him.

A week from Monday, he is suppose to show off an open and shut case on this administration and its connections. I, for one, can’t wait.

Beck has been right about many things in the past. And if you have been listening/watching lately, he has been on to a few things. He is going where the media dares not go and I think his findings will damage this administration. I can not wait until next Monday.

bucsox79 on August 14, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Ahhh…maybe that’s cause he IS ONE!

Blueneck on August 14, 2009 at 8:24 PM

In what way? I think you’re confused. “Disagreeing with the liberal agenda” and “racist” are not interchangeable.

amerpundit on August 14, 2009 at 8:28 PM

I don’t like Jon Stewart, I think he’s an intellectual lightweight. But he totally owned Glenn Beck. If Jon Stewart can own Glenn Beck he’s not a very good pundit.

terryannonline on August 14, 2009 at 8:28 PM

I say let them target Glenn Beck. He made himself an easy target. It is no one’s fault but his own.

terryannonline on August 14, 2009 at 8:25 PM

And how is that? By speaking the truth and pulling the curtain back on these folks? I understand he is a target and why, and that is exactly why I support him, as we all should if we are interested in liberty.

conservnut on August 14, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Glen beck interviews Dr. Rand Paul about potential rationing boards based on what is in Britain.

Hmmm perhaps Palin’s death Panels assertion was correct although I want to read the part of the bill that establishes these death boards.

Spathi on August 14, 2009 at 8:28 PM

But the worst impact is simply self inflicted because they’ll not reach his audience with their product message.

ClanDerson on August 14, 2009 at 8:19 PM

You’re right, which makes me wonder how long they are going to lay low before they start up again with Fox News. They have the ad budget and Fox has the ratings.
