LA Weekly: If you object to calling the Obama Joker poster racist, you’re probably racist

posted at 8:43 pm on August 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

A masterpiece of argument by assertion, and a natural progression in the left’s logic on this subject. Step one is taking a conservative message you don’t like and free-associating your way to a theory that it’s racist. Step two, following the angry denials, is to suggest that perhaps the racism is operating subconsciously. Now, after further angry denials, comes step three: The “doth protest too much” theory, speculating that the very intensity of one’s anger at being demagogued by a race-baiting bottom-feeder is proof of just how right that bottom-feeder was.

To be honest, though, I do believe the poster appeals to people who see in it a validation of their own racial prejudices, even if they can’t acknowledge them. That my short post hit such a deep, raw nerve clearly shows that race was very much part of the illustration’s attraction. Denials that the poster has any racial overtones join that endless parade of self-deluding apologies and clarifications presented by Republicans about the Birth of a Nation imagery they’ve been employing ever since Obama ran for president…

No, dude, it’s all about race. Racial anxiety and racism are social pathologies that adapt to changing conditions and evolve over time. Conservatives don’t burn crosses at their rallies – contemporary political theater and its language have moved on with the times. Still, I remember that even back in the days when cross burnings were in vogue — and when it seemed that civil rights workers were being killed every month in the Deep South — even then you would rarely find a segregationist proclaiming, on television at least, that he was a racist and believed blacks were inferior. Instead, the racist argument was usually couched in terms of “state’s rights,” “mutual benefits,” of how Negroes themselves didn’t want race-mixing, that they were basically good, hard-working people who were being duped by Communists…

The truth, again, is that the fears of the art lovers who champion the Obama Socialism poster are all about race – about losing their skin privileges, about the possible airing of old crimes and grievances committed against blacks. How else can you explain the mad surge to buy guns, to deny Obama’s American birth, the teary prediction that the White House is ordering up concentration camps, and the rock-solid belief that Obama’s lab-coated bureaucrats are coming to kill our grandmas? Who’s the real Joker here? And whose deck is that race card being played from?

At the link, as evidence of the “Birth of a Nation” imagery Republicans have been using since the election, you’ll find four examples. One of them is Limbaugh’s “Barack the Magic Negro” parody, which was a goof aimed at Al Sharpton’s race-baiting of Obama, and another is the racist e-mail about Skip Gates sent by that cop in Boston, which had nothing to do with The One as far as I know. On this sturdy foundation is the case for Obama/Joker’s racism laid. Exit question: Once the poster, like the burning cross, becomes too taboo to display — a process already in progress — to which nefarious coded racist symbol will right-wingers turn? I’m guessing signs that read “Vote Republican in 2012.”

As far as villians go, I think the Joker misses the mark. Prez is more like Two-Faced. Still might be “racist” because the definition on wiipedia is a”dark side”.

Will someone PLEASE set these idiot liberals straight on the KKK/cross burning/Jim Crow stuff?!?
The democrat party was the party of southern white slaveholders.
It was DEMOCRATS who started the KKK after the Civil War as a way to keep the black population under the boot.
It was DEMOCRATS who burned crosses and hung black men for such minor things as looking at a white woman.
It was DEMOCRATS who expanded and then fought to keep the Jim Crow laws.
It is DEMOCRATS who rely, to this day, on the politics of race to keep this country separated and fighting amongst itself.
The republican party was created in the 1850′s specifically to oppose slavery.
REPUBLICANS fought and died to free the slaves.
REPUBLICANS supported civil rights and fought to get rid of Jim Crow laws.
REPUBLICANS include Matin Luther King Jr., Homer Plessy (who’s lawsuit, Plessy v. Ferguson, which he lost, ushered in the Jim Crow laws), Booker T Washington, Ida B Wells (founder of NAACP), Sojourner Truth, Jackie Robinson, James Meredith (civil rights leader), Alveda King, James L Farmer Jr.(civil rights leader), Charles Evers(civil rights leader and brother of Medgar Evers), Eldridge Cleaver (civil rights leader), the list goes on.
You can try to project the crimes of the Democrats onto the Republicans, but history proves you wrong, time after time.

That is not a Racist Poster. The underground comics that Robert Crumb did in the 60′s and 70′s were Racist and he’s a Liberal. This poster is illuminating. Liberals can not stand the light is day. It is the best disinfectant.

Then there was the Bush/Joker pic… It was created just incase we eventually elected a “black” precedent… That was a slick piece of forethought so that the racists would have a disavowing image to fall back on when the real “Joker” poster appeared…

SagebrushPuppet on August 15, 2009 at 1:34 PM

This simple but brilliant poster has drawn more flak from the left than it’s message should merit. The volume of rhetoric and the tortured logic used to make even the most tenuous connection between this poster and Klan-type racism are clear evidence that somebody is becoming unhinged, and I don’t think it’s the right.
These statist and progressive writers are unconcerned that they are burning their own credibility to ashes. There’s an opposing thought out there that must be crushed. Hit the racism siren. Full speed ahead.

Madoff was painted in Joker makeup for the cover of a news magazine. Was that an act of anti-semitism, or a comment on his actions? If I think this Obama poster is a similar use of the Joker image to make the point that socialism is viewed by many as evil and that Obama is leading the country in that direction–-I’m a racist? Ok, I guess that my best friend–the one I shared a room with for 3 years who is Nigerian, and my wanting to marry a black boyfriend I once had, and my having a black gynocologist are indicative of caucasian me being unconsciously racist. LOL… this is hilarious (via Drudge, sorry if it’s been touched on already):

“Currently we are still conducting interviews of victims, witnesses, and other suspects who were placing the Obama Joker Poster throughout our city,” Jensen said in the statement. “We believe that the postings are the result of multiple suspects. We are hopeful that we can develop enough information to present charges of vandalism to the State Attorney’s Office for review.”

He did not have a specific reason why the individual who admitted to putting up the posters spent so much time sticking them to surfaces around the city, but Jensen suspects it may have something to do with a contest linked to the image of the President in white face and smeared lipstick, like the Joker.

This person is insane and on so many levels. Now if the caricature had been of Obama as a Chimpanzee then there would be some logic to this person’s attempts at reasoning, although there would still be the rather large problem of the mental state of someone who thought he could read minds and detect what people could not even detect themselves. One would think that Obama had been caricatured as a Chimpanzee, now that could be suspected as being racism. Oh but wait, Bush was even caricatured as a Chimpanzee, and many times, so that would have to be ruled out unless Bush is Black/half Black. On the matter of the Joker caricature, the Bush Joker caricature was of a far more demented looking Joker anyway.

Actually as to the manner in which to characterize Obama, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde would be far better and more accurate than a Joker caricature anyway. That is what I want to see.

Dr Jekyll represents the image of Obama during the campaign, even McCain said, “You have nothing to fear from this man”, and the image that he still tries to maintain in between revealing himself more and more as the ever more dominate personality Mr. Hyde.

Hmm. In “dark knight”, society is working OK (has its warts, but is generally ok), and then the Joker appears. When two boatloads of antagonistic people each refuse to blow each other up, Joker’s all set with his own detonator, all set to blow both sides up. The reason really isn’t apparent to anyone other than the Joker.

As usual, they are making a huge deal out of removing those posters being glued up.

The media, everywhere, are showing photos and videos of some worker laboriously and inefficiently scraping them off with a putty knife or something.

30 seconds with a water pressure washer will take them off, or failing that, a little MEK will dissolve the glue within seconds.

Look at it this way, 0bama: the people sticking up those posters are just providing some work for the “shovel ready jobs” you keep touting. They are providing a public service to those who can’t find a job, but want to work. Makes for a nice symbiotic relationship

I suggest a new Czar: A Poster Czar, in charge of the new Federal Dissent Poster Removal Agency. Keep your idiocy up and you can probably get another million people employed by the Federal Government, just to go around and remove anti-0bama posters.

LegendHasIt on August 16, 2009 at 4:07 AM

Thos poster has nothing to do with race or the fact that Obama is black. It is clearly intent on conveying the message that Obama, playing the role of the joker, is decieving us into accepting nationalized medicine which is foundation of his presidency, as is that it will open the doors to everything else he wants, creating within our country, a socilist government, controlled by an elite group of people, those who are pushing so hard in congress today and with Obama as the leader, for as long as they chose to rule. Our protest will no longer matter except as criminal acts that must be put down.
This is not a new plan. The socialist have been trying to use medicine as the way to gain control for decades. Who can say no to providing healthcare to those who need it? All they needed was power to do it, with out calling it socialism. The new term, for both socialism and communistm is progressive. Sounds like someone doing someting that is right and needs to be done. They got that with Obama, a leader of the lower classes, a prerequesent for a socialist leader and a democratic controlled congress. The Democrats are not the party that most Americans grew up with. The Socilist created the New Party in the late 90′s. It did not make itself known, instead it quietly worked to put thier Democratic canidates into office in congress. Their canidates owed loyaity to them and the democratic party. Obama was one of their canidates they worked to put in his senate seat, and in doing so has asccepted the lable as a socialist. The intention was to get enough socialist canidates into office then break away and form an open party to challege the Democrates and Republicans. Much to their surprise, the got the whole Democratic party, with maybe the exception of some of the blue dogs and did it so quietly that no one noticed until recent history.
The socialist long ago figured out that it was a lot easier to use the poor classes, plied with promises of sharing in what the richer people had, to subvert a government, take control of it, than to wage an armed confortaton and take it by force. It is alot easier to subvert those in power with positions of elitetism within the government than to try and recreate a government from those less able to govern and to remove your enemies who oppose you.
Obama is doing everything he can to prevent his association with socialism, which that poster so clearly was doing. He knows that the more people see him and his polices and congressional legistlation as socialist with an agenda that the majority do not approve of, the less likely that he is to succeed. Obama sees himself as meant to rule and too important to lose the power to do so, even through an election at the end of two terms. I fear what that time is going to bring upon us.

Personally I view the poster as art…It makes a statement. Racism doesn’t come into this at all except from the left, as in disagreeing with a man who happens to be half black is not dissention, but racism…Nowhere in that poster is there a statement of true racism: That one race is superior to another..

I remember some time ago an “artist” with grants from the NEA creating artwork that involved suspending a crucifix in a jar of urine. As a Catholic, I didn’t like it, but I’m a believer in the First Amendment, so I took it in stride. Another artist made I believe a painting of the Virgin Mary using cow dung. Once again as a Catholic I was offended, but believe in the First Amendment, and let it go…As both of these art projects involved Jews, wouldn’t that be considered anti-semitism?…I guess blacks must be more important than Jews and Catholics by that definition, as no one on the left said a damn thing about it. Couldn’t be a double standard or using the race card like Paris Hilton uses her American Express now, could it?????

By the way, I’m ordering the shirt from zazzle tomorrow. My Gadsden Flag “Don’t Tread On Me” T-Shirt I got from them looks way cool…

A little o/t but at amazon, Atlas Shrugged is #104 in book sales right now. Last I looked (a few weeks ago) it was #400 or so.

There’s a long thread between an Obama person and someone who knows what’s what.
Again, I’ve run into a person who is basically an O bot saying they regret voting for him, and that he’s made a bunch of mistakes. But this person says they’ll simply leave this country and go somewhere else and “be on top”.

More and more people on the Left are saying they regret Obama now. This person still bashed Palin and McCain, and brushed all conservatives with the same stroke, but at least they said that Obama was bad.

Obama’s campaign took such advantage of people who didn’t know better. All those wide eyed kids who were clueless and thought obama would make the Earth spin.

How pointless are those racial pimps like Al Sharpton, all they ever do is contort their fat faces and cry, “racist!” at every turn. It’s so disgusting when I see O’reilly give forums to these tools like they are serious people instead of the clowns they truly are.

If, as the liberal opinion piece claims, the poster is one noose away from being racist, couldn’t I also claim it’s one ball-gag away from being homoerotic?
There is no end to the list of things the poster could represent by adding one more element the artist didn’t add and probably never intended.
That anyone with two functioning neurons takes this argument and runs with it is desperation-induced stupidity.

The real truth behind the creator of the Obama Joker Poster? Forget the secret meetings between the Obama Administration and Big Pharma. The poster was originally produced to protest a secret meeting between this administration and a cabal known as “Big Make-Up”, companies such as Estee Lauder, Mary Kay, Merle Norman, Max Factor, and Avon. The premise was to lock up 51% of the voting populace (women) by the Obama administration agreeing in secret to fund ailing make-up companies in exchange for subliminal messages in make-up t.v. advertisements promoting the One as the Messiah.

It ain’t racism, dude, it’s sexism and commercialism. Look it up, it’s on the Web.

BigAlSouth on August 16, 2009 at 9:13 AM

If the Joker poster is racist, then Heath Ledger was a raving racist, and/or Obama is a racist for referring to Ledger’s work as racist.

While depicting a sitting president like that is tacky, but who cares. The left did some eye popping spin on this one. That needs to be pointed out. The proponents of this spin need to be singled out and pruned so they don’t readily do this again, or do worse. The minions that do his bidding need to have their wings clipped. Then the joker will just light up and go back to Chicago in 2012.

So, once again, the LA Times shovels absurd nonsense to those who aren’t wearing their hip waders. The Joker image was no more racist for Obama than it was for Bush, when the New Yorker showed Bush that way.

To call Obama a “socialist” is like, to paraphrase an old colloquial expression, “calling a spade, a spade.”

RACIST IN CHIEF; PRESIDENT RACIST; etc.

Cybergeezer on August 16, 2009 at 11:22 AM

If you call people racist simply because they don’t agree with you then your probably a communist or socialist.

Still, I remember that even back in the days when cross burnings were in vogue — and when it seemed that civil rights workers were being killed every month in the Deep South — even then you would rarely find a segregationist proclaiming, on television at least, that he was a racist and believed blacks were inferior.

I think the guy is seriously projecting here. All of the people who were doing the stuff that he describes were Democrats (who, by the way, are still very much in control in the Deep South. The Alabama legislature hasn’t seen a Republican majority since 1870 and there have been precisely three Republican governors in AL since then). I think the reason Democrats like the the writer of the LA Weekly piece always try to associate Republicans with racism is because racism is just so deeply ingrained in their own psyches. When you consider that every founding member of the Ku Klux Klan was Democrat, that Democrats opposed the 13th-15th amendments to the constitution as well as every piece of civil rights legislation up until the late 60s, that they institutionalized Jim Crow and segregation, that every single villain of the Civil Rights era–Wallace, Faubus, Maddox, Connor, etc–was a Democrat, well it shouldn’t surprise anytone that Democrats such as the LA Weekly guy are so desperate to deflect attention away from their own deeply held, possibly even subconcious racism. Silly Kluckers.

The real outrage about this poster is that Barry’s minions just can’t stand seeing him in white face.

It ruins the post-racial meme based on his black cred, which suits their schizophrenia so well.
