Demagogue-in-chief: Support amnesty for illegals or you’re a demagogue

posted at 6:04 pm on August 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

A sneak peek at what’s to come if The One’s serious about pushing immigration reform before the midterms. If you think the health-care rhetoric is poisonous, wait until the left has to deal with an issue that’s of special concern to minorities while they’re staring down the barrel of a potential GOP takeover of the House. The race-baiting and demonization of amnesty opponents will be like nothing the country’s seen for decades. All Obama’s doing here is sending a shot across the bow (while addressing a Mexican audience, natch).

Suddenly, even Peggy Noonan can’t shake the feeling that, when you come right down to it, Barry O’s kind of a divisive figure.

Looking back, a key domestic moment in this presidency occurred only eight days after his inauguration, when Mr. Obama won House passage of his stimulus bill. It was a bad bill—off point, porky and philosophically incoherent. He won 244-188, a rousing victory for a new president. But he won without a single Republican vote. That was the moment the new division took hold. The Democrats of the House pushed it through, and not one Republican, even those from swing districts, even those eager to work with the administration, could support it.

This, of course, was politics as usual. But in 2008 people voted against politics as usual.

It was a real lost opportunity. It marked the moment congressional Republicans felt free to be in full opposition. It gave congressional Democrats the impression that they were in full control, that no one could stop their train. And it was the moment the president, looking at the lay of the land, seemed to reveal he would not govern in a vaguely center-left way, as a unifying figure even if a beset one being beaten ’round the head by the left, but in a left way, without the modifying “center.” Or at least as one who happily cedes to the left in Congress each day.

Things got all too vividly divided. It was a harbinger of the health care debate.

And many other debates to come, no doubt. Fun fact: Per the latest Rasmussen, 33 percent think Obama’s governing as the post-partisan hero he promised us he’d be during the campaign. Percentage who think he’s governing as a partisan liberal Democrat: A cool 51. Click the image to watch.

I had thought that some U.S. employers were getting away with the equivalent of slavery but I had not idea of ethnic cleansing on the part of the Mexican government. That’s pretty disgusting. It also make me feel sorry for the illegals. Not enough to grant amnesty but certainly more understanding of they desire to leave Mexico.

Remember that Dick Morris, Bill O, Newt and even Juan McLame said that this guy was NOT a radical. Perhaps they could now tell us who is a radical, or that they were wrong.

IlikedAUH2O on August 14, 2009 at 8:04 PM

Would you want to build a monument to that guy?

Or to the freedom-fighter who ended his life?

I sure as hell would.

That’s true for me. I’ve never met a politician I liked. Just politicians who are less odious than others.

jaime on August 14, 2009 at 7:02 PM

No, there are some – a very few – who truly believe in a calling to defend freedom, rather than to enjoy the perqusites of office.

The Founding Fathers, who pledged their “..lives, fortunes and sacred honor..” were among them.

So were Reagan and Thatcher. And having had the privilege to meet Michele Bachmann, Rudy Giuliani and Pat Toomey, I recognize that in them, too.

guntotinglibertarian on August 14, 2009 at 8:06 PM

I’m afraid, if this nonsense keeps up, what you’re more likely to see is most, if not all, incumbents being thrown out, regardless of party, and replaced by who-knows-what.

guntotinglibertarian on August 14, 2009 at 7:15 PM

I understand the principles you base it on, but still there is a bit of a paradox. What our founding fathers created was a an experiment. people had doubts that a democracy could stay together. Slavery had divided us so much that the south seceded. If Lincoln had allowed it to happen, America would’ve been another failed democracy in the annals of history. Foreign governments woulda said “Republics don’t work look at America. Noone ever agrees.” At the cost of 600,000 lives and the dismissal of the 10th amendment we preserved an idea.

I was surprised though about Lincoln being rated #1 president. He went to war and won war. That’s it.

… In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution, is a moral & political evil in any Country. It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it however a greater evil to the white man than to the black race, & while my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more strong for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence.

Again, since most “Northern” forces were volunteers in the state militia, why blame Lincoln? 22 soveriegn states felt like invading and subjugating 11 soveriegn states, so what’s your issue? What on earth can you cite to maintain Georgia’s “right” against invasion by New Englanders? What treaty? The constitution of 1783?

if lincoln had run a program patterned after obama’s cash 4 clunkers maybe the south would have been more inclined to release the slaves. i doubt it though. especially after the federal government’s instigation of the nullification crisis years before. the south, and south carolina in particular, knew the real intentions of the federal government. that’s why the framers warned the people to always stay vigilant.

Our debate team learned the maxim that “Truth Cannot Oppose Truth.” If one side of the argument is TRUE then the opposite side must be False. Both sides can’t be True. Both sides can however be false i.e. Democrats and Republicans can both be wrong. Obama is maddening to logical thinkers because he is such a pathological Liar!! His lies cannot stand up to Truth and he will eventually fail. Americans are finally waking up to his propaganda(Lies). On immigration it seems that both parties choose to feed us lies rather than face the Truth.Unlimited illegal immigration will destroy this country(may already happened)Truth says it will bankrupt us to add illegals to unlimited health care! They continue to try to ram this massive welfare program down our throats. Truth (Basic Math) should stop them.

Considering the problems the Panderer-In-Chief is having getting Cap-and-tax and nationalized healthcare through a Democrat-controlled Congress, THIS little item could blow his administration completely sideways. Watching someone self-destruct is interesting, especially when they don’t realize they’re doing it until it’s over. Clueless is as clueless does. That lack of “executive experience” is showing.

All the more reason to proclaim your independence from either party and vote for liberty in the form of whatever candidate swears allegiance to it, regardless of party. SKYFOX on August 15, 2009 at 11:14 AM

As I have gotten older, I find that I am less and less tolerant of intrusions upon my freedoms — and the denigration of this great country. I have been attending tea parties, blogging and speaking out publicly against the socialist path we are traveling. Strangely enough, I am not afraid. Perhaps anger and fear are strong motivators. The last time I was this outspoken was while my kids were in school and I was fighting the stupidity of the educational system. Wow! Even my family members have told me they worry I will be locked up one day for protesting and strongly discourages me from blogging for fear of ending up on a “list” somewhere. Frankly, I think that would be a minor inconvenience compared to those who have given their lives for the cause of freedom! I say, bring it on!

lovedinthekeys on August 15, 2009 at 12:26 PM

One of the bloggers on the Right Online conference today traced the origin of the tea parties back to Obama’s election. I say it started back when they tried to force amnesty down our throats last year. All back room politics, scolding us for being racists (when are you people in SC going to vote out Grahamnesty?), rushing it through (the model for Porkulus, Cap & Tax and Obamacare), putting their phone lines on voice mail and unplugging their fax machines. We learned then that although 80% of Americans just wanted the border closed and illegals not granted amnesty, our “representatives” didn’t want to listen to us. That’s what started this movement and it won’t stop until we have a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Christian Conservative on August 15, 2009 at 12:33 PM

Amnesty for illegals will go over like a lead balloon while we have double digit funemployment in the US.

alliebobbitt on August 15, 2009 at 3:32 PM

Two reasons Democrats want amnesty: 1. Illegals helped inflate the housing bubble, and they will continue to be useful during the next bubble, Obama’s FDR-inspired infrastructure programs 2. Another voting block ensuring a Dem majority where you couldn’t vote these crooks out even if you tried.

Tend to agree that bringing up immigration reform is a red herring to try to break unity amongst the GOP. Problem is that conservatives are striking out on their own, feeling the GOP has abandoned them. I think part of why the GOP is laying back is waiting to see if we hold together. If we do, they are going to have to court us, or remain impotent. And they realize the courting will have to be sincere. I think they are having trouble with the idea.

Obama & the left know how the public feels about this issue. As angry as people are now, it will be twice as bad if he tries some leftist “solution” to border issues. Bad enough for people to go ballistic, and I mean literally.

People have speculated that he wants to declare martial law. If he has any sense, he should know that lots of National Guard people would probably refuse orders in that scenario. If there is anything left in America that I have faith in, it is those of us standing up at this political crisis, and the goodwill of the military toward Americans. I don’t see the National Guard caring to defend a socialist government against real Americans.

Others have speculated that Obama actually wants to destroy the country. I don’t know what he wants, but between them the leftists have a good start at it. By their fruits…

Had lincoln lived the history of the post war south would have been drastically different. He did not see the southern states as needing to be punished, but as needing to be brought back in to the union, rebuilt and made stronger to make our nation stronger. Johnson said he would do as much, but he did not have the power of persuation that Lincoln had, and so failed miserably as congress did as they desired. Slavery was over with or without the war for several reasons. The only question was freeing the slaves and provding an education and skills so that they could support themselves, or freeing them by declaration and letting them do the best they could to survive, which the south knew would result in serious social issues. The choice was the former, but it never had its chance when war broke out over the issue of a tarrif on southern goods shipped out of the country instead of being sold to northern companies at lower prices. We got the worse possile result for the end of slavery and our nation suffers today; and with probably the worse possible president with a race based socialist agenda that we could have elected, with a congress that will do his bidding without question; dragging us screaming and kicking down into socialism, because “they know what is best for us.”

warren1816 on August 16, 2009 at 12:58 PM

No Obama, you’re the demagogue! You and the Left want to change the demographics of the country to continuosly win elections. A 4-year-old can figure this out. Liberal Republicans want open-borders and more legal immigration purely for cheap labor. Newt Gingrich and his guest-worker programs, John McCain and George and Jeb Bush all sing the same song. Amnesty/immigration increases have never given the GOP more hispanic voters. You want the Hispanic vote? You cut immigration levels, then you assimilate the immigrants. Which means English is the official language and we as a society try to end multiculturalism…I know, good luck with that. Immigrants assimilate when their communities aren’t replenished with more of their own countrymen and then the immigrants disperse to the broader American society. The United States had massive immigration at the early 20th century. Immigration was mostly European, however all the same problems of Balkanization, non-assimilation, poverty, competition amongst jobs by natives and foreigners existed. Then the GOP dominated congress, passed an immigration reduction bill signed in 1921 by Harding, then another reduction bill in 1924 signed by Coolidge. These bills drastically reduced immigration to a couple hundred thousand per/year. Anyway there was no welfare state either, then you combine that with 40 years of restriction and assimilation and you have the “Melting Pot” effect until it was changed in 1965. In 1965, you had Medicaid, Medicare, and the Hart-Celler Immigration act of 1965 passed. This increased immigration everywhere with chain migration, and changed the location for immigration to come from mostly the third world. Immigration levels were promised by Ted Kenneddy and the Democratic congress not to go up and not to upset the Ethnic mix of the country. What a lie! Illegal immigration also soared b/c of all these changes and no enforcement. Folks we’re not Germany or Japan where people are dying out. Americans have children at replacement level (2 kids per woman). Do immigrants have a little more kids? Yes of course. Yet, is it enough to supply the country with workers to fix the dependency ratio for Social Security, or whatever these people whine about? No it is Not! The Census bureau even acknowledges that massive immigration as a means to fix the worker dependency ratio doesn’t work. Our supply of workers is fine, if you want more workers, increase the child tax credit to $8,000 instead of the current $3,000. $8,000 is the inflation equivelant of the Child tax Credit back during the Baby Boom of the late 40′s-50′s-early 60′s. Tax Credits, coupled with lower taxes across the board as well as a tighter labor market helped to create the Baby Boom. The GOP should lower property/income taxes and get rid of stupid environmental and property regulations, all these laws do is drive up the cost of living where people can’t afford to have more children. Nixon was good on some issues, However, Nixon in 1968 established a Population-Stabilization Commission, to talk about saving the environment from “Over Population!” Nixon along with Environmental wackos helped to brainwash many Americans that they should have ZERO children so the world wouldn’t blow up from a lack of resources. Time has proven Nixon wrong on this issue. Even with Massive immigration after 45 years, we still have 90% of land in the USA that’s not developed and can be for homes, etc. We have alot of out-of-wedlock births b/c our welfare state hands out money to women who bare children. Another incentive to having more kids who are your future workers is to get rid of abortion! Killing a million babies a year doesn’t help anybody. We have to wait until there are judges who can strike down Roe v. Wade, so what do we do until then? Try to restrict it or amend the law. So how do we properly solve our dilemma? Secure the borders, use attrition to get the illegals to go home. Deport the most violent. Cut immigration levels, assimilate them, Make English the official language. Then at least try to do the other policies I mentioned, We’ll be a better society b/c of it. My research came from the Center for Immigration studies for immigration legislation and labor impacts, NumbersUSA for Nixon’s involvement, and a Google search on Richard A. Easterlin, who was a demographer who researched the Baby Boom in 1961.
