Video: ObamaCare fans take Astroturfing to a new level; Mayer an OFA organizer
posted at 10:11 am on August 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Patterico and Lone Star Times capture yet another banner moment from a town-hall forum hosted by Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) . In this clip, Roxana Mayer introduces herself as a doctor (a general practitioner for four years) in order to support ObamaCare and Jackson-Lee in a fairly hostile crowd. For her efforts, she gets a big hug from the Congresswoman, an image which the Houston Chronicle featured prominently on their website coverage of the event.
But was Mayer really a doctor?
Not only was Mayernot a doctor, Roxana Mayer was an Obama delegate, as Patterico discovered with some digging. What’s more, the Houston Chronicle apparently knew this and failed to include it in its glowing coverage of Mayer’s appearance. The reporter, Cindy Horswell, has admitted that she knew Mayer was an Obama delegate and that Mayer didn’t live in Jackson-Lee’s district when she wrote the Chronicle story. After getting exposed, the Chronicle quietly changed the caption on the photo without issuing a correction, removing the reference to Mayer being a doctor.
Be sure to read all of the posts for a great rundown of an excellent catch by Patterico and Lone Star Times. At the moment, no one has any evidence that Jackson-Lee, the White House, or Organizing for America had anything to do with getting this imposter the microphone to ask a sympathetic question and make sympathetic declarations at the town-hall forum. However, the odds of that happening as a coincidence with an Obama delegate seem a little long.
Update: Those odds just got a little longer. Guess who was a lead organizer for OfA back in March 2008? Thanks to Allahpundit for tipping me to this!

Update II: Right Wing Sparkle calls OfA “shameless.”

OBAMACARE = OBAMACIDE for the Elderly.
Sec. 1441 (commencing at p. 620), which establishes consensus-based entities to “assess outcomes and functional status of patients (and) assess continuity and coordination of care transitions for patients across providers and healthcare settings, including end-of-life care… (and) assess efficiency and resource use in the provision of care.” Meaning that if grandma needs a procedure, a standardized cost-benefit analysis will determine whether old ladies with her condition live long enough to make it worthwhile to spend the money, never mind that her doctor thinks that grandma is one of those people who could live to be 110.

Yeah, but the environment is one area where Rush makes me crazy, and where I am unable (and finally unwilling) to defend him to my liberal friends. It is one thing to be in favor of personal choice and government restraint in regulating use of personal property; it is another to be reflexively opposed to ANYTHING that will help to conserve resources or decrease pollution. For example, I’m totally opposed to the government telling people they HAVE to use CFLs; but I happen to think they are a very worthwhile means of decreasing energy consumption, and they last long enough to more than offset the cost of purchase. But to hear Rush tell it, they are a horror, wearing out faster than incandescent bulbs and producing far less light. It’s demonstrably untrue, and it hurts his credibility, and by extension the credibility of conservatives in general.
To me, the best reason not to buy a Volt is that it comes from GM. That was true before the bailout, and even more true today.
RegularJoe on August 13, 2009 at 1:56 PM
It is not against the law to simply claim you’re a physician, or even a practicing physician, and leave it at that.
It is against the law to claim you’re a physician and then give medical advice or treat someone and receive payment for it though.
In this case, Roxana Mayer is simply, and most definitely, being a charlatan for the Obamacare cause. Quite possibly in collusion with the Senator. But that is yet to be proved.

As for the Volt and the other hybrids and electrics…all well and good. But government has no place in requiring citizens to own one, buy one or even give one a second look.
That is the job of the market place.
Now, if these various electric and hybrid car manufacturers would play it smart…really smart…they’d take a short tterm loss in revenues to market such cars at a price where most Americans could afford them. But, if you price a car in the +$35k range….what’s the point? You eliminate most of yourt market right off the bat, and then have a market that consists of those who have the means to pick one up as a second car…but, if you have +$35k to drop on a car..what kind of car would you be looking at? A tinny Japanese anime-design, or something that more befits your status in life? A small fuel efficient conventional-engined high-mileage fuel-efficient Beemer or similar?
Bad marketing. Bad business model. And government has no place in this market.

Do you think I’ve said otherwise? I’m restraining my “snark impulse”, and asking you to go back and read my earlier post.
Don’t take me as any apologist for the Volt. I think if we built a few dozen more nuclear reactors in this country, using electricity for some of our everyday driving is a fine idea (and again, by making a good deal to consumers, not a government mandate), but I haven’t educated myself on the volt per se; so what I’m about to say is not a defense of the car.
As a marketing plan, though, I disagree with you. Think back to the first VCRs, CD players, DVDs, digital cameras. All were VERY expensive at first — proportionally much moreso than the Volt, though of course the difference in absolute dollars was much smaller — and were affordable only by the well-off. As such, they became status symbols, which only heightened their appeal. Then, when economies of scale kicked in, the prices came down and reliability (and features) went up. Now it’s difficult to find someone without those items (except the VCR, which many understandably view as obsolete). Moreover, it’s doubtful the power-grid can support the masses driving electric cars immediately. The concept will have to prove itself, and the number of electric cars and power generation capacity will have to grow together (which, due to the realities of building power plants, necessarily means “slowly”).
Now, get the government out of it and I’ll be happy (I like the idea proposed by a GOP congressman a couple of months ago, to cut taxpayers shares of GM stock as compensation for financing the bailout; once we have our shares, we’re like any other stockholder, and can keep them, sell them, leave them to our kids — and Obama will not be able to run the company — which is, of course, why that ain’t going to happen).

Cfl’s contain mercury. LED’s are superior. As far as the Volt is concerned, there is more to consider than the fuel savings. Manufacture and desposal of the battery, limited range and high cost; not the best bang for the buck.

Yes, reflexively opposed. Tell you what: you name me one pro-conservation or pro-clean environment thing — public or private — that Rush has actually supported. The closest I can think of is when he said if the tree-huggers want to save a forest they should buy the land (which I do agree with him about, and which many of them are now doing).
But so what if the CFLs contain mercury? Heck, every commercial building, school, church, and illuminated sign in the country had contained mercury for the last 40 years. But if it’s a problem, I’m happy to bring the three or four CFLs that burn out at my house every year to a recycling center. I wouldn’t be happy to be REQUIRED to (or to be REQUIRED to use CFLs); but it would be well worth the money I save, and the convenience of not having to change bulbs so often.
As for the manufacturing and disposal of the batteries, that’s a concern for me, and one reason I don’t want us to start churning out millions of these things per year until we have a better handle on doing it cleanly. I know I read about one electric car company (Tesla maybe?) build the cost of recyling the battery into the cost of the car, which is a great step in the right direction.
For full disclosure, I should mention that I actually drive a 1995 Dodge full-size van (and, when my wife lets me, her Mustang Convertible). You guys seem to think I not only drive a golf-cart, but want to make everyone else do so as well. The only difference between my position and yours is that I’d like to see us use less resources and create less pollution, and I’m open to exploring technologies that will do that. I don’t want the government to pay for the research, and I don’t want them to make anyone do anything. But it pisses me off when the very EFFORT to be a conservationist makes me suspect to conservatives; and yeah, as much as I like him on pretty much every other issue, I blame Rush for a significant amount of that.

Barring some alteration the laws of thermodynamics Ogabe seems so fond of ignoring the only way to achieve the first part of the bolded in your statement is to run the vehicles on Hopium…the electricity comes from *somehwere* the most clean from a practical standpoint energy source that could make a serious stab at it is nuclear….it is off limits if so why…..
the second part of your statement is possible ONLY if you factor out the environmental impact of battery disposal….as it now stands the cleanest technology would be fuel cell and even that has issues…..the last part your vague “open to exploring” is usually code for “allow the government to pick a winner and subsidize it” which we have in fact already done with putting chairman Soetoro in charge of Government Motors….

The point that Rush was trying to make is that it is going to make more carbon for those stupid little obamacars than they are going to save. When you plug then in at night just to go 40 miles on a battery what kind of power plant do you think it going to generate it? Mostly heavy fuel or coal. If all the libs in CA buy one then you can bet that rolling brownouts or going to become blackouts. People are so stupid and never think about unintended consequences. Take for instance all the mercury that is in those CFL’s. It will do more harm to the environment and to people then the regular light bulb. People running around with their head up thinking that they have all the answers and all they create is more problems. The people in this world are just a bunch of drones.

If you calculate “Tank-to-Wheel” efficiency electric cars do great. But an analysis that measures “Well-to-Wheel” efficiency looks at where the energy originally comes from and electric cars fall rapidly in efficiency. Remember that electric power plants become part of the equation when you plug your car in every night. The following article is from 2003 but since our power grid hasn’t changed much since then it’s still relevant.

Sven, I’m not sure why you’re so hell-bent on making me a socialist. I’ve gone on record again and again as being opposed to government mandates. I’m opposed to CAFE. I’m opposed to government mandated CFLs. I can’t say it any plainer: I am opposed to government mandates (and taxes, present and proposed) on energy consumption**. By “look into”, I’m talking about entrepreneurs, inventors. Guys who come home from work and tinker in their garages, and wind up rich. There is a profit to be made in a comfortable, reliable, safe car that gets 10 MPG better than the next one, or that will go 300 on a 20-minute charge.
And of course the laws of thermodynamics apply, but our current technology is, in many cases both dirty and inefficient. There are more efficient and less efficient means of using energy (burning oil to make electricity, then using electricity to extract hydrogen from water, then using the hydrogen in a fuel cell is not efficient), and there are more polluting and less polluting means of generating it.
And I agree that the batteries are a concern. That’s why (as I, again, have already said) I think we need to move not too quickly into the realm of battery cars, to see what the overall effects are. Will the batteries themselves be cleanly recyclable? What will become of whatever can’t be recycled? What are the byproducts? Can any hazardous byproducts be reduced or safely stored? It’s way too early to say.
The problem is that too many conservatives — as this thread has proven — have an instinctual urge to hunt down and kill anyone who promotes responsible INDIVIDUAL environmental stewardship. Frankly, this is one way we could make some headway with the younger generation, by showing that we DO care about the environment, and that it CAN be improved by individual initiative and the free market. Unless you don’t believe it can, in which case I’m far more of a believer in the free market than you!
__________________________
** Generation is a slightly more complex matter. The free market will automatically promote greater efficiency, because we’ll all prefer a product that saves operational cost. But while market forces WILL motivate a generation facility to be efficient, it will not motivate it to be clean. So for generation, I don’t favor total deregulation on pollution levels. If “promote the general welfare” means anything, it surely must mean to protect people downwind from a coal-fired generation plant from too-high levels of sulfur and arsenic in the air. But apart from reasonable clean-air standards, I’m a free-market guy.

I think the anger you see at town halls has come from the frustration conservatives feel at not having their voices heard in the mainstream media. We are far too often misrepresented or mischaracterized while the left almost always gets a pass when they pull stunts like this.

All this lying and dishonesty. Of course I trust BO to do what’s best for me…

He is a politician . Lying goes hand in hand. The D next to his name means to double your expectation.

So this is what Bizarro world really looks like. What a disgrace these dems have become. 2010 can’t get here soon enough!!!

Please Mr. Obama, I don’t wanna go
Hey, Mr. Obama, please don’t make me go
I had a dream last night about my comin’ medical care
Somebody said “What you’ll get is ObamaCare!!!’”
And there I stood with a rag in my mouth upon which to bite.
Look at them waiting lines there, they’re hardly even movin’
And there’s a bureaucrat at every one
Hey, Mr. Obama, you mind if I be excused the rest of the century?
HEY MR MORRISSEY, DUCK YER HEAD!!
(Sound of bureaucrat’s clipboard whizzing by)
Hmm, you’re a little bit late on that one, Ed
Whooh, I bet that smarts!
Please Mr. Obama, I don’t wanna go
Listen, Mr. Obama, please don’t make me go
There’s a bureaucrat a’waitin’ out there, just fixin to decide my fate
A complainer I’ve been called cuz I don’t wanna wind up screamin’ or dead
I wonder what the Kenyan word for friend is
Let’s see-friend– kemo sabe, that’s it!
KEMO SABE!, HEY OUT THERE-KEMO SABE!
Nope, that itn’t it
Look at them durned power hungry control freak fascists
They’re runnin’ around like a bunch of wild Mengeles and Kevorkians-heh, heh, heh

Jackson-Lee never lies…and….It never rains in Houston.
lasertex on August 13, 2009 at 7:15 PM
Not only is Mayer not a doctor, Horswell’s not a reporter.
So that makes it even.
lasertex on August 13, 2009 at 7:22 PM
If that’s not journalistic malfeasance I don’t know what is. The major “news”-reporting organizations capitulating wholly and completely to one political party and one political viewpoint is unprofessional and reduces their output to mere propaganda.

Last night on Fox – I think it was Greta – they featured the Sheila Jackson-Lee phone call story and I could swear they said Jackson-Lee’s people said the phone call was about alerting Jackson-Lee to certain people in the audience. (I know on CNN Jackson-Lee was saying she was calling the Health Care Bill information hotline). But maybe she was being alerted about “Dr. Mayer?”

“…we are like so poor at treating preventative care…”
Dr. Roxana Mayer

Ha ha ha, I am watching Greta, and SJL just said Sheila Jackson Lee is working for the people!! I cracked up, I was waiting for the obligatory, “it puts the lotion on!!”
