Rasmussen: Toomey leading Specter by double digits after townhalls; Obama approval at 47%
posted at 10:52 am on August 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Those who thought fiscal conservative Pat Toomey couldn’t win in Pennsylvania may have to recalculate after the eruption of anger towards Congress and their rush to take over one industry after another. Rasmussen reports that Toomey now leads Arlen Specter, the Democratic incumbent, by double digits in a survey of likely Keystone State voters:
Uncomfortable town hall meetings are just the tip of the iceberg for Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter. He now trails Republican Pat Toomey by double digits in his bid for reelection next year and is viewed unfavorably by a majority of the state’s voters.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Pennsylvania voters shows 48% would vote for Toomey if the election were held today. Just 36% would vote for Specter while four percent (4%) prefer a third option, and 12% are not sure.
These figures reflect a dramatic reversal since June. At that time, before the public health care debate began, Specter led Toomey by eleven.
In fact, it looks like a pretty clear wipeout for Specter. In the crosstabs, Toomey beats Specter among both men and women (51-33 and 44-39, respectively), every age demographic, and among independents by 20 points (48-28). Specter looks like a complete bust.
But what about Joe Sestak, Specter’s Democratic challenger in the primaries? Surely the sitting Congressman can do better against Toomey. Actually he does, but not by much. Toomey beats Sestak in this poll 43-35, and among both men and women (48-34, 38-35). Toomey wins or edges Sestak in almost every age category save a 37-36 split among thirtysomethings. Toomey also scores a 16-point lead among independents, 44-28.
It looks like Specter switched parties and gave up his seniority for absolutely nothing. In this season, he would have been better off remaining a Republican in the midterm elections.
I will interview Pat Toomey tomorrow from the Right Online conference, and you can still sign up to come to Pittsburgh to hear him speak.
Update: Rasmussen’s new tracking poll, with data now coming in from after Obama’s first town-hall forum, shows his approval ratings falling to 47%:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 29% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-seven percent (37%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -8 …
Overall, 47% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. That’s the lowest level of total approval yet recorded. The President’s ratings first fell below 50% just a few weeks ago on July 25. Fifty-two percent (52%) now disapprove.
Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Republicans disapprove along with 65% of those not affiliated with either party. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of Democrats offer their approval.
As I predicted yesterday, Obama’s reappearance on the health-care reform issue has increased the gap in the passion index to -8. His job approval numbers will continue to fall as long as this bill remains on the table.

Well on the bright side Barry can now claim he “inherited” Bush’s poll numbers too.

I live in Bucks County, which used to be Specter country and is pretty evenly divided Republican/Democrat. I don’t know anyone, Republican or Democrat, who plans to vote for Arlen Specter. The latte liberals around here who backed Obama are all supporting Joe Sestak. I predict Sestak will carry the Philadelphia suburbs by big margins. Specter will have to wipe him out in Philly and Pittsburgh to win the primary.

It’s amazing how things change once people find out what politicians say, do and stand for.
That’s why I’ve been saying all along that Obama’s approval rating would be in negative numbers if the mainstream media actually did its job.

Funny how things can change so much in a mere 3 months. Just goes to show that if the GOP shows some backbone and sticks with fiscally conservative candidates, they’ll dominate in the midterms.

I’m not getting my hopes up yet. I did when Russel was kickin Murtha’s butt and look how that turned out. Theres no underestimating the power of the liberal money train. Just like how Murtha poured millions into his district the last week and spread countless lies, Specter will do the same. Their resources are limitless. This race will be a fight and a hard one for the Republicans to win.

Daggett on August 13, 2009 at 11:04 AM
Obviously, I’m not the inimitable rockmom but I’m just south of PA in Delaware. Pennsylvania has a very dysfunctional state government, led by Democrat Ed Rendell, who has very bad approval numbers right now. They have no money and don’t even have a 2010 budget yet. The city of Philadelphia is in about the same shape. My guess is that Toomey has a decent chance if he can hold onto his fiscal responsibility and not start flip flopping on other things so that he starts resembling a fish.
I mean, Santorum did lose to Casey, but Pennsylvanian’s still thought they were getting a conservative.

It looks as if the Democrats are going to be trying to figure out how let go of BHO’s coat tails without drawing the ire of the liberal wacko leftists in 2010. It should be fun to watch.
sheriff246 on August 13, 2009 at 11:06 AM
Just goes to show that true conservatives can win, even in more “liberal” states. I’m not an advocate of kicking all the moderates out of the party (we can’t afford to kick anyone out of the party right now), but there’s no reason we should be promoting moderates over conservatives during Republican primaries (i.e. Crist vs. Rubio in Florida), and this just further proves that point.

Obama is a terrible salesman. He just hasn’t got Billy Jeff’s smoothness when lying to people. This is the first time he’s EVER had to work in his life to sell something to people that they might not (clearly do not in this case) want.
He’s absolutely terrible at it. His sales pitch consists of lying about what’s in it and giving examples like why his grandmother shouldn’t have gotten a hip replacement and that doctors seem to be into unnecessary amputations and surgeries.

I never thought that Toomey would ever have a snowball’s chance in hell of defeating any Democrat. Bad move Specter. Bye bye now! Have a nice retirement!
NathanG on August 13, 2009 at 11:15 AM
Oh, I’m very aware of many of the things going on there. I lived in PA for 6 years (left 2 years ago) and during that time saw Toomey lose by 1% against a stacked deck and then saw Santorum get booted.
I remember Rendell’s first campaign when he was promising either to not raise taxes or actually cut them. I got my first tax increase from him within 6 months of him taking office (never voted for the slimeball)
I just remember her stating very plainly that Toomey did not stand a chance in PA and they had no need for someone as conservative as him, and it got under my skin. Specter barely won last time and people got more and more sick of him since that time. I knew he had a very good chance of going down in 2010, it was just a matter of who he lost to.

BigD, they thought they were getting Casey’s father, who was one of the few Dems I’ve ever seen who was credible and consistent. Not especially conservative, but no hard-core lefty either. You might not have agreed with Casey Sr., but you knew where he stood and you knew he was rock-honest (he made his rep as auditor general absolutely torching a Dem administration). Casey the younger, on the other hand, is a jerk, to put it politely. He pretends to follow his old man on abortion, but enthusiastically backs the euthanasia advocate Obama.
The trend in Pa. for 2010 is GOP. Since governors were first allowed to serve two terms, no sitting governor has been defeated, but we have not had consecutive governors from the same party. Fat Eddie Rendell (D) is term-limited out in 2010.

If this poll, and Ed’s assertion that this is tied to the health care debate, then Obama has real troubles.
Bill Clinton faced similar problems over health care, but he was able to turn it around because, when all was said and done, Bill (and most of his crew) were never true believers. They used the liberals for their own ends, and when it became inconvenient, they walked away from them.
Barack Obama has no such luxury available to him. He and his people are true believers, and they desperately need the leftists to carry the water for them.
I hope Ed is right on this one, because it would bode very well for the Right.

Well, I live here, and I don’t want that lying crapweasel Sestak as my Senator. He’ll be there for a long time, while if Specter gets reelected he’ll probably die in office and then Governor Tom Corbett can appoint a Republican. At the very least it will be Specter’s last term and we’ll have a better chance of winning an open seat in 2016.
So I’m hoping Sestak makes a good run at Specter, pushes him hard to the Left, and then Specter ekes out a win. He will have moved so far left that Toomey can beat him.
