MSNBC host: Hey, wouldn’t Jesus want us to have universal health care?
posted at 10:09 pm on August 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
I wanted to write a post on that business industry study showing that the House’s global warming bill will bludgeon the economy, but it’s simply too depressing/enraging after a long week of depression and rage. Have at it in the comments if you can muster the energy. Instead, since we haven’t had a good religion food fight in a while, enjoy stalwart lefty Ed Schultz discovering the joys of faith-based politics. It’s a testament to how vile the left’s rhetoric has become, especially when mouthed by MSNBC’s primetime line-up of demagogues, that this line of attack comes off as comparatively genteel. Although maybe that’s due in part to Schultz’s guests here not barfing up the talking points he’s expecting. Take a page from Olbermann, Ed: Make sure to screen the guests for total ideological conformity before you put them on the air. That way there are no surprises.
My very strong suspicion is that if I posted this on a lefty site, all the Christians there would say yes, of course Jesus wants universal health care. As it is, opinion among Christians here will be unanimous that he doesn’t or that he’d have no opinion (“render unto Caesar,” etc.) Exit question: Aren’t the lefties right?

There’s not enough “volunteering” to take care of 47 million uninsured people. What about the Good Samaritan?

Mark Levin had excellent audio of “the first and last time you will hear of Ed Smaltz on my show” stating the following:

I can’t claim personal responsibility for helping someone if all I do is let the government steal my money to use as they want.
So the answer to what would Jesus do is nothing. It is up to each individual to determine if and how they want to help anyone.

Exit Question Answer:
I am guessing here and I hope I am not wading into blasphemy…Jesus would say care for the sick should be voluntary and not coerced. It is the intent of the caring rather than the caring.

I hate it when you Christ-haters decide to weigh in on what Christ would or would not do. You don’t believe so why do you keep coming back and challenging those of us with faith? Having doubts about your own beliefs???
Christ would have preached looking out for one another. He would not have supported a plan that calls for abortion or death panels because every life is precious and to abort unborn life or kill off old people is immoral.

The left isn’t right, because that would be conceeding the false maxim that “universal” care is more beneficial than a market based system. When in fact, it will depreciate the care for everyone else. It is as Churchill said, the “equal sharing of misery.”

The first thing you can be certain is, when lefties ask rhetorical question regarding Jesus Christ it is to use Jesus Christ as a bludgeon to achieve their agenda.
The second thing you can be certain of is, that they don’t have any idea of what the genuine meaning behind whatever situation they use in their rhetorical question actually means.

God is the creator and father of science and all things physical – you are correct; prayer alone is foolish to save a sick child – that father should have taken advantage of life saving medical science, in addition to his prayers, to save his child. Foolish man – now the child is gone. Sorrowful. He deserves prison.

“Taking care” of the uninsured would be an ancillary goal for Christ, so not achieving perfect coverage is not an issue just as curing Poverty or Sickness or Suffering in a general sense is not an issue. The primary goal is always making disciples.

The Good Samaritan helped a man who was set upon by robbers, couldn’t help himself, and had no family near by.

I am not a fully faithfully practicing Christian…a Roman Catholic here, with all the faults and shortcomings that go with the territory…
That said,
So Ed Schultz is wanting to cite Jesus to make a claim that universal health care is Christian? That wouldn’t Jesus want us to have universal health care?
OK…he opened the door.
Now, about government-paid abortions provisions contained within the legislation?
Not something Jesus would be out there on the front lines supporting.
End of life counseling? Likewise…really can’t imagine Christ being part and parcel to that, either.
As to State-controlled universal health care?
Not a Jesus thing, either.
“Love one another”…requires direct, person to person rendering of comfort, aid, compassion, assistance, one one’s own volition…and that is the point…direct person to person involvement. It is hard, It is difficult, It is an inconvenience…and that is how is it done. Being a real Christian or living Christ-like life, even if not Christian, is a tough row to hoe. But if it were easy…what’s the point?
Whatsoever we do for the least of our brethren…us…individuals…not some massive government program…a bureaucracy can no more obtain the Kingdom than a camel walk through the eye of a needle or something like that…
Have yet to see any teaching of Christ state that we should become slaves of the state to gain Salvation. It does indeed go beyond “render to Caesar…and to God what is God’s.”
So, Reverend Ed Schultz…take your false Gospel and try to sell it somewhere else.

Maybe, just maybe, more so because Ogabe apparently prays everyday for God’s help (something he shares in common with that American Taliban George Dubya).
Perhaps instead of praying, Ogabe should ask Congress to create a law which mandates nationalized spiritual guidance, funded by taxpayers of course.
Bishop on August 13, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Jesus said, “The poor will always be with us.” The apostles were given the responsibility of caring for the poor, but He didn’t give them the responsibility of paying all of their bills, providing them with universal health care, etc. It’s amazing how people bring Jesus into an argument when they’ve tried everything else.
ramblingirl on August 13, 2009 at 10:31 PM
Your point is still just as valid even if you take out the “God is the creator and father of science and all things physical – you are correct” part.
Just saying. Good rational point, though.
Weren’t the teachings of Christ all about humility and caring for your fellow human being, regardless of their circumstances? Even if you take the religious aspects out, that’s the stance that socially liberal people are inclined to take – help out the poor and disregard the self for the good of the whole. The conservative says “Free Market!” and those who don’t make the cut – financially or otherwise – are left out in the cold.

And I imagine that Jesus would advise that the state of a person’s “eternal health-care” as it were (pardon the cheesy pun) was far more important than of that for our earthly state, but I somehow doubt you would encourage us start a proselytizing campaign to the 47 million uninsured.
Honestly, I don’t think any Christian can say for certain that Jesus would not be for it, but the “render unto Caesar” rule is what would probably apply.

“Thou shalt not covet they neighbors goods” was one of the Ten Commandments. If I’m not mistaken, forcing people who have more to pay more, because you see that they have more, is doing just that. “Sharing the wealth” is coveting and, no, Jesus wouldn’t like that.
This health care bill is forced on us.

Far be it for me to question someone’s faith, but last time I checked, after 6 months in office, Barry has yet to select a church to attend in the DC area. So maybe he’s not much of a Christian after all.
