Major Garrett grills Gibbs: Why are people getting unsolicited e-mails from David Axelrod about health care? Update: See White House privacy policy
posted at 4:00 pm on August 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
He claims to have evidence that some entity — either the White House itself or The One’s army of cultists at Organizing for America — has now sunk to the point of spamming people about the glories of socialized medicine. I suspect Ace is right in thinking that this is the origin of the spam and that Garrett has his facts slightly wrong: It’s not Axelrod who’s spamming people, it’s Obama cultists acting at Axelrod’s behest by copy/pasting his post and sending it to friends. If Fox wants this charge to stick, they have to show us exactly what Garrett was forwarded (minus the “to” and “from” lines, natch). Frankly, given The One’s ubiquity on television and in print, the White House might as well go the rest of the way and start pushing e-mails at us too. The more talking points I hear, the more they blend together as noise and the easier it is to tune them out.
Now, if Garrett can somehow put the spam story together with this story, then we’re cooking with gas. Click the image to watch.
Update: A reader just forwarded me an e-mail her brother got Monday night. It is indeed the Axelrod post at the White House site that I linked to; it has a White House heading and a White House “from” e-mail address. It doesn’t appear to have been forwarded to her brother from any third party. He claims he doesn’t remember signing up for any WH e-mails. For what it’s worth.
Update: A second reader just e-mailed to say that he got the Axelrod e-mail too — and it’s not the first one he’s gotten:
I received this email this morning. This is the second email I received from this address. I started receiving these after I sent an email to the flag@whitehouse.gov address……
Is that what’s happening here? Conservatives are spamming the White House snitch line, only to find themselves signed up for White House e-mails? I thought Gibbsy told us they’re not collecting names or other identifying information from that account. Has anyone else who spammed the snitch line gotten any Axelrod e-mails?
Update: A third reader e-mails to say he’s spammed the snitch line half a dozen times and hasn’t gotten anything from Axelrod. Curiouser and curiouser.
Update: Another reader e-mails to say he thinks he has the answer:
After seeing this post on your web site, I can add some information on who’s getting the emails. Some time back, I went to the whitehouse.gov site and sent a congratulatory note by using the “contact us” link. One of the required fields on that form is an email address. I didn’t want to use my regular email address, so I used an old email address that I never use anymore. When I read this post, I became curious and checked that email address. Sure enough, there were seven emails there from whitehouse.gov, starting on July 14 and going up through the current David Axelrod “Something worth forwarding” email today.
I have sent an email to the “flag” address using my regular email address, but have not received any whitehouse.gov emails in return to that address.
So for me, it defintely seems to be dependent on my contact to whitehouse.gov, even though no notice is given that you will be placed on an email list at that site.
Why aren’t they notifying people?
Update: Tipster RLW finds the answer hiding in plain sight on the White House’s privacy page.

It was just one big effort to gather info for a marketing e-mail list….sort of like when you fill out the little pieces of paper in the box at the local fair for a chance to win the car….you won’t win the car, but the promoters now have thousands of e-mail addresses for their marketing….no difference here…(except that I bet most of the e-mail addresses they gathered were from conservatives spoofing on them)…oh, how ironic…

Allah –
WTF are you to “request” what Garrett has received, in order for the charge to be “real”
Ironically – you have 2 updates to the effect of people making the same claim.
More importantly – you should be concerned with Gibbs’ red herring of a response – and in case you didnt watch the exchange live, I did – and the incredulous look on Garretts eyes said it all.
I suggest a warm up in Spam laws 101 and that ole document called – the Constitution along with federal guidelines. Just because the WH can claim “we cant destroy emails” – doesn’t mean the method they receive them is illegal AND most importantly – their ability to use those emails for spam/marketing purposes.
You are a fucking tool.

These idiots don’t even know that people are “who”s, not “that”s. The Precedent must have written this, himself, since it is consistent with his inability to learn the proper use of the indefinite article – I love when he talks about “A illegal …”

I suspect anyone who writes an email to President Obama, whether in favor of a policy or in opposition, may be put into a huge email listing and is sent updates from the White House if the box requesting a response is checked. I’ve been receiving emails from David Axelrod and President Obama for some time now after writing to Obama (probably in February) in opposition to some item which has slipped my memory (too many to count, apparently). Voila! On the list.
Mae on August 13, 2009 at 6:04 PM
Just a technical note… the “from” and “reply to” lines in an email header can be arbitrarily forged. You have to read through all of the mail-exchanger handoff lines in the header, and even some of those may be bogus. So it’s not always easy to say “who sent this” email.

Several questions and I’m being perfectly serious.
Q1. If you informed on yourself did you use two email addresses and IF SO – did BOTH of those addresses get spamed with the same message from Big Brother? Or did the perp email addy get a different message directing them to the correct way of thinking and giving them directions to the re-education camp nearest them?
Q2. Is Robert Gibbs mentally disabled and some sort of affirmative action hire on the part of Obama, because if he is then we should not be making fun of him like this — other than to remark that it could be he’s the only person really qualified to reflect the true mind of Obama. Wait. That was wrong, wasn’t it. Sigh.

I received numerous ones, including one from David Axelrod (also one from Michelle Obama, two from “the President…”) all from the White House, and I never contacted the White House, Axelrod or M.O. (or B.O.) for any reason, ever.
Never forwarded anything to any of them at ANY address (including the whitehouse.gov), never called, wrote, or otherwise contacted any/all of them, ever, for any reason.
They obviously have acquired the email addresses they are using to Spam America, for political purposes.
From what I’ve heard from other Americans, people who received this Spam from the Obama White House (various persons, including Axelrod and wife), they’re those who are not among the dedicated slaves to Obama.
So the Obama White House is most certainly sending out Spam (against the law in and of itself) — if you’ve never asked to be contacted and you are, and there’s no means by which you can “unsubscribe” even when you’ve never subscribed in the first place, that’s Spam, that’s against the law — to political opponents.
They’re using email to harass, in other words.

I’ve posted this elsewhere on HotAir, but think it needs to be reposted here for consideration:
The fact that the NH townhall meeting with Obama was filled with so many supporters may be easy to explain, even by a non-geek like me. Keep this recent article in mind when you follow my logic below: U.S. Web-Tracking Plan Stirs Privacy Fears
Something to think about:
Remember that the White House has hired technically savvy people to handle their web presence, not to mention the campaign that put Obama into the White House. Google employees and others have joined the Administration.
The White House has frequently asked the public to submit questions and comments on various issues. People who do so typically fill in government web forms.
This process allows the WH to collect email and IP addresses for perhaps several million people. I’ll bet it also allows them to sort those comments according to the views expressed — opponents vs.supporters.
A presorted database would be a goldmine for controlling who gets access to Obama events.
All the WH would have to do to keep opponents out of a townhall is to program their computer to crosscheck all applicants for townhall tickets or other venues. If the IP or email address shows up on the opponents list, the computer ignores the request. If it shows up on the supporter database, it gets placed into the lottery.

AP – I’ve been receiving unsolicited White House emails since Obama took office and lets just say I’m no friend of the administration; nor have I been to any federal gov’t websites, especially whitehouse.gov, let alone given one smidgen of my contact info.
I design and build websites for fortune 1000 companies for a living. I’m well informed about CAN-SPAM compliance laws and just about anything interactive…this White House is bending laws they’re responsible for enforcing.
The whitehouse.gov site uses Crazy Egg heat maps on their site for crissakes! Not illegal by any measure, but tell tale of how far they’re willing to go to capture and manipulate any data point they can about the populous to squirm and make their policy/terminology as fluid and slippery as possible.

If they are using this info for anything other than official White House communications with individual citizens…such as “lending” it to the DNC, or some backroom go-after-astroturfers program, maybe even Barack Obama’s super marketing machine, is this legal?

Yep…and the GOP has been behind the curve on this since day one. The GOP needs to fight fire with fire regarding grassroots mobilization — they have improved a good bit as of late but they are going against one of the best in urban politicking and mobilization in Axelrod. As much as the Obama stump and speeches have been gaffe and misstep-filled, the marketing part of the Obama campaign was pretty good.
It’s about the only thing I would ever give Obama’s team credit for. Some of you may disagree but you have to admit the GOP’s branding and message in ’08 was not clear and concise…thank you Schmidt and Bounds and may neither of you work another presidential campaign again, please.

They’ll issue a full report (which you can save for future reference, includes their quick and accurate analysis of where the Spam originates, what path was taken to reach your address, IPAs, etc.) and then report it IF the sender or sender’s administrator will receive the reports (many Spammers just declare they “no longer wish to receive reports” but it does not stop the accrual of complaints against them).
SpamCop.net
You can register an email address, they’ll then send you a direct address to which you forward all your Spam (with full headers, as attachment, they’ll explain all that to you in directions), or,
you can just go to SpamCop.net and follow their directions for reporting Spam otherwise.
But their first process works really well and easily, it’s very simple after you register an account with them to just forward each and every Spam email you receive afterward, then follow the links to report or not afterward.
